GOODMAN -- Funeral services for James Goodman were held Saturday, October 23, 1999, at New Jerusalem Holiness Church in Kingstree, conducted by Bishop Si Scott. Burial followed in Old Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemtery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Goodman, 80, died Sunday, October 17, 1999, at his residence in Lane. He was born September 11, 1919, in Turbeville, a son of the late Thomas Rose and Alma Goodman. He relocated to Kingstree and was united in holy matrimony to Rosa Mae Scott. He was a member of New Jerusalem Holiness church where he was a member of the Deacon Board. He was a former employee of Robinson Tobacco Company in Durham, NC. Surviors are: his wife, Mrs. Rosa Mae Goodman of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Brown and Mrs. Mary Shaw, both of Lane; six sons, Calvin Goodman of Lane; James Goodman, Jr. and Willis Goodman of Kingstree; Mason Goodman of St. Stephens; Richard Lee Goodman of Rochester, NY and Edward Goodman of Durham, NC; one brother, Harry Goodman of Florence; and two step-daughters, Mrs. Lillie Bell Higgins and Mrs. Jannie Pendergrass, both of Lane.

OSBORNE -- Herbert Osborn, 83, formerly of Lake City, died Thursday, October 14, 1999, in a Maggie Valley, NC hospital. Funeral services were held Sun., Oct. 17, 1999, at Newtown Free Will Baptist Church near Olanta. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Charlie Aiken Osborne and Martha Drucilla Cook Osborne. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Williamsburg County public schools, a farmer and a member of Victory Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also served as a former deacon at Newtown Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Pluma (Peggy) Driggers Osborne of Maggie Valley, NC; five daughters, Jacqueline Bowen and Janice Harkins, both of Atlanta; Joanne Mercy of Flat Rock, NC; Jeanette Duke of Kingstree; and Judi Coppedge of Pawleys Island; and one sister, Dorothy Tisdale of Kingstree.

TAYLOE -- Mrs. Mary Moore Tayloe, 94, died Thursday, October 21, 1999, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 23, 1999, in the Kingstree First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Williamsburg Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Tayloe was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late William P. Moore and Savannah McDaniel Moore. She was employed by Silverman's Dept. Store and was an active member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. She was the widow of John Webb Tayloe. Survivors are: one sister, Hazel M. Davis of Fayetteville, NC; and two brothers, John D. (Pete) Moore of Andrews; and Charles R. Moore of Kingstree.

RODGERS -- Mrs. Lydia Strong Rodgers, 65, died Tuesday, October 19, 1999, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 21, 1999, in Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Rodgers was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late James Frank Strong and Eunice Wilson Strong. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Survivors are: her husband, Carl J. Rodgers of Kingstree; two sons, Stephen C. Rodgers of Myrtle Beach; and Judson Matthew Rodgers of Florence; two brothers, Jack Strong and William Edward Strong, both of Andrews; and one sister, Barbara S. Chandler of Surfside Beach.

MITCHELL -- Funeral services for Herbert Mitchell were held Thursday, October 21, 1999, at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Gourdine, conducted by the Rev. C. C. Gordon and the Rev. Bonus Miller. Burial followed in Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Trio directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mitchell, 67, died Saturday, October 16, 1999, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born May 11, 1932, in Lane, a son of the late Professor Parson and Rosa Montgomery Staggers. He was a retired employee of The City of Winston-Salem, NC. He was a member of Genesis Victory Outreach Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors are: two sons, Rodney Mitchell of Winston-Salem, NC; and John Cantey of Foreston, SC; four daughters, Rosalyn Little of Lane; Mrs. Edith Carolyn Torrance, Mrs. Shelia Murphy and Kenyatta Mitchell, all of Winston-Salem, NC; and five sisters, Mrs. Virgiree Wilson of Lane; Mrs. Trudie Mae Parson and Mrs. Lou Anna Wilson, both of Winston-Salem, NC; Mrs. Mrs. Martha Mitchell of New York; and Mrs. Alberta Knox of Lane.

WARD -- Mrs. Valerie F. Ward, 69, wife of Delta S. Ward, Sr., died Sunday, October 24, 1999, in the Lake City hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, October 25, 1999, in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Lake City Memorial Park directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Ward was born in Elloree, SC, a daughter of the late Harry S. Felder, Sr. and Lucille Wactor Felder. She was a graduate of Columbia College and was a former school teacher at Scranton High School and the Lessie Wimberly Kindergarten, Lake City Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Scranton United Methodist Church and the Scranton United Methodist Women, where she was honored this year by the South Carolina Conference through the Scranton United Methodist Women for her channels of undesignated giving, for her life of service, and special mission recognition. She was a member of Woodmen of the World. Survivors are: her husband, Delta S. Ward, Sr. of Lake City; one son, Delta S. Ward, Jr. of Kingstree; and one daughter, Jan W. Beard of Lake City.

BURGESS -- Funeral services for Harold Burgess were held Saturday, October 30, 1999, at St. Mathews Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by the Rev. James Council. Burial followed in Salters directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Burgess, 57, died October 22, 1999, in Brooklyn, NY. He was born November 9, 1942, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late James "Jimmy" Burgess and Lillian Giles Burgess. He was a member of Zion Shiloh Baptist Church, where he served on the male chorus, the Brotherhood Organization and the Gospel Chorus. He was also a member of Jepethan Lodge #42. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Loretta McArthur Burgess of Brooklyn, NY; two sons, Darold Burgess of Brooklyn, NY; and Charles Burgess of Raleigh, NC; two daughters, Carol Burgess of Norfolk, VA; and Kareema Burgess of Brooklyn, NY; two brothers, Leroy Burgess of Kingstree; and Ranie Burgess of Lane; and two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Wright of New York City, NY; and Mrs. Dorothy Felder of Jamaica, NY.

McELVEEN -- Mrs. Rachel M. McElveen, 84, widow of Edward E. McElveen, Sr., died Wednesday, October 27, 1999. Funeral services were held Friday, October 29, 1999, in the Hebron United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. McElveen was born in Greenville, a daughter of the late George and Essie Wham Macaulay. She was a homemaker and teacher's assistant for the Williamsburg County School System. She was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church, past president of the United Methodist Women and a Sunday school teacher. Survivors are: one son, E.E. "Ebbie" McElveen, Jr. of Cades; and two daughters, Essie Claire Coker and Norma Parker, both of Cades.

KEELS -- Funeral services for Boyd Keels were held Sunday, October 31, 1999, at Promiseland Baptist Chruch in Greeleyville. Burial followed in Cowhead Cemetery in Gourdin directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Keels, 61, died Tuesday, October 25, 1999, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was born June 12, 1938, in Salters, a son of Mrs. Esther Scott Keels and the late Samuel Keels. He was employed as a construction worker. He was a member of Promiseland Baptist Church, where he was a former trustee. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are: two sisters, Mrs. Hessie Lee Keels of Salters; and Mrs. Dorothy McClary of Greeleyville; and one brother, Amos Keels of Rocky Mount, NC.

DRIFFIN -- Funeral services for Henry Calvin Driffin were held Sunday, October 31, 1999, at St. John Batpist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by the Rev. Talbert Dickson. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Driffin, 64, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born February 4, 1935, in Greeleyville, a son of the late Thomas and Rosa Brown Driffin. He graduated from Williamsburg County Training School (C. E. Murray High School) in Greeleyville in 1955. He received an associates degree in electronics from Charleston School of Electronics in Charleston. He was a member of St. John Baptist church where he was the Sunday school superintendent, member of the Trustee Board and Church Sexton. He was also a member of the Williamsburg Baptist Assocition where he was a member of the Planning Committee, Campground Committee and Sound and Lighting Committee. He was a former employee of Bryant Pipeline Construction Company. He as a paratrooper in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. Survivors are: his wife, Janie D. Driffin of the home; one daughter, Cheryl Gomes Driffin of Lakeland, FL; one step-daughter, Mrs. Sherelle Grant of the home; five brothers, Ben Albert Driffin, Tom Frank Driffin and Roosevelt Driffin, all of New Haven, CT; Jimmy Driffin of Greeleyville; and Cellus Driffin of Rochester, NY; five sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Sherman of New Haven, CT; Cleola D. Cunningham, Mrs. Hazel D. Montgomery-McKenzie, Mrs. Margaret D. Burgess and Mary Turner, all of Greeleyville; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Eva Daniels of Lake City.
