HORTON -- Edward Conyers Horton, Sr., "Beebop," 89, died Saturday, November 13, 1999, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, November 15, 1999, at Kingstree Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Horton was born in Manning, a son of the late Edward Conyers Horton and Janie Ingram Horton. He was a warehouse supervisor for W. Lee Flowers, then became an owner/operator with his three brothers at Horton Brothers Wholesale Grocery. He later retired as owner/operator of Horton Oil Company. He was a member of Kingstree Optimist Club and Elder Emeritus and member of Kingstree Presyterian Church. During World War II, he was a member of the Home Guard. Survivors are: two sons, Edward Conyers Horton of Blountville, TN; and Michael Lee Horton of Kingstree; and one sister, Olivia H. Blakely of Kingstree.

BURGESS -- James Monroe (Roe) Burgess, Jr., 73, died Thursday, November 11, 1999, in a Kingstree nursing home. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 13, 1999, in Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Sam Shumate. Burial followed in Williamsburg Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Burgess was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Pansy Epps and James Monroe Burgess, Sr. He retired as advertising manager for W. L. Flowers Co., and served in the US Navy during World War II. He was member of Presbyterian Church, a Mason and a charter member of the Kingstree Moose Lodge. Survivors are: his wife, Faye Davis Burgess of Kingstree; and one daughter, Elaine Pullen of Dickinson, Texas.

MURPHY -- Funeral services for Addie Murphy were held Sat., Nov. 13, 1999, at Marion Missionary Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Brockington. Burial followed in Elijah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Murphy, 75, died Tuesday, November 9, 1999, at the Carolina Hospital System-Florence. She was born January 11, 1924, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Wash and Minnie Wilson Murphy. She was a member of Marion Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the senior choir. She was a former cook at Henry Pressleyıs Cafe and the Williamsburg Residential Care Facility. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Georgianna Fulton of Rochester, NY; and one son, John Henry Murphy of Rochester, NY.

CHANDLER -- Funeral services for John Chandler were held Nov. 15, 1999, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by the Rev. Leverne Brown. Burial followed in Salters Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Chandler, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born July 18, 1911, in Williamsburg County, a son of Joe Chandler and Ellen Chandler. He was a retired railroad worker. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Survivors are: four brothers, Lawrence Chandler of Salters; Joe Chandler of Brooklyn, NY; Frank Chandler of NY; and Alexander Chandler of Brooklyn, NY; and two sisters, Mrs. Wilhelmenia Best of Aynor, SC; and Mrs. Lillie Johnson of New Haven, CT.

EVANS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Rebecca Evans were held Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at St. Paul AME Church in Cades, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Fulmore. Burial followed in the Goodwill Cemetery directed by Henryhand Funeral Home. Evans died Nov. 5, 1999, at the New Jersey Medical Center. She was born January 25, 1917, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Jimmy Epps and Mammie (Page) Evans. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Cades. Survivors are: three children, Annie Bell Evans of Delton, TX; Willie Evans and Hattie Staggers of Jersey City, NJ; four sisters, Vernell Gaham, Ila Mae Brown, Emma Jane Walker and Vernice Graham, all of Lake City; and two brothers, Hazel...

GREGORY -- Florence Johnson Gregory, 84, of Charleston and formerly of Pulaski, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Funeral services were held Wed., Oct. 13, from the Stevens Funeral Chapel in Pulask, conducted by Glann Lee, Duke Gregory and Fred Gregory. Burial followed in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va. Mrs. Gregory was born January 8, 1915, in Pulaski, Va. and was the daughter of the late Samuel J. Johnson and Mary Pennington Johnson. She was a member of the Essex Village Church of Christ in Charleston. A memorial service will be held in Charleston at a later date. Survivors are: five children, Fred Gregory of Abilene, TX; Margaret Sullivan of Pulaski, VA; Duke Gregory of Johnson City, TN; and Doris Akers and Janie Polutta, both of Charleston.

YOUNG -- Mrs. Marguerite Lane (Rete) Young died Wednesday, September 29, 1999, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, October 1, 1999, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Tabernacle Cemetery in Lynchburg, SC directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Young was a daughter of the late Joseph Eston Lane and Mamie Marie Wilson Lane. She graduated from Kingstree High School and was a retired sales clerk. She was a Presbyterian. Survivors are: three sisters, Grace L. Robinson and Carolyn McConnell, both of Kingstree; and Miriam McCain of Effingham; and three brothers: J.E. Lane, Jr. and Lloyd Lane of Kingstree and Emory Lane of Florence.

SPRING -- Charles Lindbergh "Chick" Spring, 63, died Friday, October 8, 1999, at his residence. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 10, 1999, in the Hebron United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mr. Spring was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Capers Ashby and Beatrice Bennett Spring. He was a graduate of Newberry College and was a retired school teacher of 30 years. He was a farmer and taught school in Indiantown and East Clarendon, where he was a coach and teacher. He was also associated with the Lynch's Tobacco Warehouse. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Annette Parker Spring of Cades; two sons, Charles L. "Chuck" Spring, Jr. of Hillsborough, NC; and Russell Parker "Rusty" Spring of Cades; one daughter, Janet Lorraine Spring Lange of Belgium; four sisters, Jannie Mae Floyd and Shirley Carraway, both of Lake City; Annie Dell Carraway of Coward; and Debbie Powell of Johnsonville; four brothers: Lindell C. Spring, Carroll Spring, Calvin Spring and Ben Spring, all of Lake City; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mable Parker.

DUFFIE -- Funeral services for Eugene Duffie were held Saturday, October 2, 1999, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Frank James. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Duffie, 82, died Sat., Sept. 25, 1999, at Roper Berkeley Day Hospital in Moncks Corner. He was born May 10, 1917, in Kingstree, a son of the late Willie Duffie and Minnie Shaw Duffie. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and served as a church treasurer for over 25 years. He was a retired mechanic and formerly owned a convenience store and hotel in Kingstree. Survivors are: two sons: James Mackey L. Barr of Bartow, Fla.; and Zachery Cooper of Florence; three daughters: Mrs. Evie Yvonne Duffie and Mrs. Rose Marie Duffie, both of Kingstree; and Mrs. Odell Scott of Kingstree; one brother, Nathaniel Duffie of Charleston; and two sisters: Mrs. Mary Lee of Norwalk, Conn.; and Mrs. Janie Wilson of Stanford, Conn.

WILLIAMSON -- Jessie Turner Williamson, 87, a retired school teacher from Fishburne, FL, died Sunday, November 14, 1999 in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 16, 1999, at Ashley River Baptist Church. Burial followed in Carolina Memorial Gardens directed by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel. Williamson was born in Cowards, SC, the daughter of Jesse C. Turner and Viola Edge Turner. She was a former member of Charleston Council for Exceptional Children. She was married to the late James C. Williamson. Survivors are: two sons, Lewis M. Williamson of Blythewood, SC; and J. Cooper Williamson of Hanahan, SC; and one daughter, Jessie W. Bowdoin of Charleston, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
