Gerald O'Hara
Gerald O'Hara, 73, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002. Gerald O'Hara was born July 13, 1928, near Canistota, to Michael and Katie (Woods) O'Hara. He attended schools in the Humboldt and Parker area. He served in the US Navy. He married Margaret Beck on Jan. 10, 1950, and farmed near Hartford. He moved to Sioux Falls and worked as a heavy equipment operator until he retired in 1980 with a disability. He was a life member of the VFW 28, Cooties, the 40 & 8, and the Hartford American Legion. Jerry was past Post Commander of the VFW and Past State Commander of the Cooties. Jerry was active with VFW Teener Baseball, served as Bingo Chairman, and was on numerous VFW committees. He was an usher at St. Joseph Cathedral for a number of years. He was interested in John Deere tractors. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Margaret; six sons, G. Marvin (Gail), and Brian of Sioux Falls, Daniel (Lauri) of Aberdeen, Michael (Patti) of Madison, Wis., Kevin of North Pole, Ark., and Thomas (Sue Green) of Seattle, Wash.; three daughters, Agnes (Charles) O'Hara, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Denise (Jeff) Savage, Sioux Falls, Julaine (Jon) Sannes, Sioux Falls; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Robert O'Hara and Wayne O'Hara; three sisters, Leona O'Hara, Rachel Pagan, and Ann Carlson; a special nephew and niece, Frances Konda and Rose Marie Wingert; and his Godmother, Marcella Sunder-land. Services were held at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls. Burial was in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Arrangements were made by Miller Funeral Home of Sioux Falls.

Lois Petersen
Lois E. Petersen, 76, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002. Lois E. Petersen was born on November 12, 1925 in Turner County, to Niels and Katherine (Andersen) Petersen, the 12th of 13 children. Her early adult years were spent on the family home near Hurley diagonally adjacent to the quarter where she and her husband Leo E. Christensen would farm for the last 50 years. They where married on December 22, 1946. They had three children, Larry, Leanne, and Louise, and three grandchildren, Jim, Mike, and Annie. Lois was always involved in church, 4-H and Pork Council activities. Besides her family, she had three great loves, reading, the animals, especially the pigs, and cooking. There was always food, lots of food, in the house and she was always experimenting with new recipes. She was instrumental in publishing two cookbooks. One cookbook was for the South Dakota Pork Council, and the second cookbook is called the "Petersen Pantry", which is the Petersen family cookbook. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Leo; 3 children, Larry and his wife Pat, Alexandria, Va., Leanne Hearne and her husband Thomas, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Louise Albers and her husband Kenneth, Canton; 3 grandchildren, James and Michael Hearne, and Annie Albers; 6 brothers and sisters, Marge Speh, Balaton, Minn., Irene Lease, Canton, Harland, Hurley, Ruby Peters, Phoenix, Ariz., Marvin, Sioux Falls, and Alvia Farrar, Hurley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters, Edward, Chris, Anna Hansen, Clara Larsen, Marie Gerdes, and Edsel. Memorials may be directed to the Arthritis Foundation and the NACC (National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease). Services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial was in Hurley Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Ellen Kunkel
Ellen Marie Kunkel, 66, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002. Ellen Marie Jorgensen was born on Jan. 3, 1936, at Trent, to Lenius and Bertina (Jensen) Jorgensen. She grew up at Trent and graduated from Trent High School in 1953. On Jan. 13, 1954, she was united in marriage to Glenn Carlson at Walla Walla, Wash. They lived in Dell Rapids. Her husband died in an accident in 1960. She was united in marriage to Charles Kunkel on Aug. 9, 1963, at Pipestone, Minn. They lived in Sioux Falls until moving to the farm near Parker in 1975. Her husband died in 1994, and she moved to Sioux Falls in 1998. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Parker and Sioux Falls. Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, Gene Carlson and his wife, Anneliese, Dell Rapids, and Brian Kunkel and his wife, Deanna, Humboldt; three daughters, JoAnn Carlson, Diane Egan, and Connie Kraemer, all of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren, Erica, Katrina, Kelsey, Jessica, Christopher, Jerimiah, Samantha, Alex, and Brianna; two great-grandchildren, Zamuiel and Zavier; a brother and sister, James Jorgensen and Emily Jones, both of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Glenn and Charles; a brother, Juel, and sisters, Bernice, Evelyn, and Arlene. Services were held at Grace Lutheran Church on Friday, Sept. 13. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery in Parker. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Paul D. Engbrecht
Paul D. Engbrecht, 91, died Feb. 27, 2003 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Paul D. Engbrecht was born on April 12, 1911 in Turner County, South Dakota to Rev. Dietrich and Maria Schartner Engbrecht. He received his education at District 71 and Marion High School. On Aug. 22, 1937 he was united in marriage to Amanda Richert. She preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 1991. To this union two sons, Robert and Roger, were born. Paul was baptized upon confession of his faith in Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior from sin and became a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church where his father had previously pastored. After his marriage, he and Amanda joined the Bethel Mennonite Church where they remained active members until the church closed in 1992, at which time he transferred his membership to the Bethesda Church. He served on several church boards and committees over the years. The church and things of the Lord were very dear to his heart. He also was very concerned about providing for needy people at home and around the world. When Paul was only twelve years of age, his father passed away and shortly thereafter he began his lifelong occupation of farming in the Marion and Dolton area. He especially enjoyed raising and working with livestock and during these years he served on township and school boards. Paul will be remembered for his sense of humor and his great love for people. He knew no strangers and visiting was his favorite pastime. During his retirement years he enjoyed singing and playing his harmonica in area nursing homes. He often said in his last years how he missed being able to minister in this way, but was always quick to say that he was thankful things were as good as they were. In April of 2000 he moved to the Marion Assisted Living Center where he remained until November of 2001 when his health began to fail and he entered the Tieszen Memorial Home. His desire to go home to be with the Lord was granted at age 91 when on February 7, 2003 he quietly passed away at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls a few hours after being admitted. Those who remain and treasure his memory are his two sons, Robert and his wife Joan of Freeman and Roger and his wife Lucille of Sioux Falls; two grandsons, Wesley and his wife Kristin of Rochester, Minn., and Chad and his wife Kristi of Sioux Falls; two granddaughters, Abigail Backholm and her husband Caleb of Montesano, Wash., and Rebekah Coombs and her husband Matthew of Allegan, Mich.; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Madison, and Ian Engbrecht, and Keilani Backholm; as well as a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and five sisters. Services were held on Monday, Feb. 10 at Bethesda Mennonite Church. Burial was in Schartner Cemetery. Walter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Richard L. Egan
Dr. Richard L. Egan, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003. Dr. Richard L. Egan, 31 year resident of Glen Ellyn, Ill. passed away in Omaha, Neb. of complications from cancer at the age of 85. Egan was born on Dec. 27, 1917 in Omaha, Neb. but grew up in Parker where his father had a coal and ice business and later became postmaster. Dr. Egan retired in 1990 from the American Medical Association (AMA) where he was the Director of the Division of Medical Education. Dr. Egan came to the AMA in 1971 from the Creighton University in Omaha where he was Dean of the Medical School from 1959 to 1971. Dr. Egan received his MD from the Creighton University School of Medicine in 1940. Dr. Egan has been a member of numerous National Committees and Appointments. Some of these include Director of the National Heart Association, US Navy Certificate of Merit, Harry S. Truman Presidential Selective Service Medal, Member Institute of Medicine of Chicago, Salvation Army Regional Medical Advisory Committee, American Society of Internal Medicine, Association of American Medical Colleges, Diplomat, (member) National Board of Medical Examiners. Hospital Appointments in Omaha included Children's Memorial Hospital; Trustee 1959-1970, Creighton Memorial -St. Joseph Hospital Attending Staff 1941-1971; Executive Committee of Medical Staff 1959-1970. Veterans Administration Hospital, Chairman, Deans Committee 1959-1970. Dr. Egan in 1983 received the Creighton University Alumni Merit Award presented to those who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the University arid humanitarian achievements. Dr. Egan was instrumental in establishing and building the Creighton University School of Medicine in it current location during the mid 1960's. Egan is survived by his wife Jackie, daughter Katerine Balwanz of Omaha, Neb., son Richard of Rosemount, Minn., and sister Georgia Egan of Saginaw, Mich. Private Services and interment were held in Omaha. Memorials to the American Cancer Society are appreciated.

Darrell Salter
Darrell Salter, 69, died Monday, March 31, 2003. Darrell Keith Salter was born on Sept. 29, 1933, at Huron, to Boyd "Jim" and Hazel "K.C." (Wenger) Salter. He attended school in Iroquois and graduated from Iroquois High School in 1951. Although only 17 years old, he enlisted in the US Navy and served on active duty during the Korean Conflict until 1954. He later served in the South Dakota National Guard and attained the highest Army enlisted rank of sergeant major. Nevertheless, he always considered himself a sailor. On April 1, 1956, he married Arlene Corcoran at St. Martin Catholic Church, Huron. After graduating from Huron College, he taught English in Selby and Bryant before becoming a school administrator. Darrell served as the superintendent of schools in Erwin, Wolsey, Wessington Springs, and in Parker, where he retired in 1994. During his thirty-five year professional career, Darrell earnestly continued his formal education. He received his masters degree from South Dakota State University and he earned a doctoral degree in education from the University of South Dakota in 1986. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his keen intellect and his deep sense of patriotism and public service. Darrell served for over 30 years as a volunteer with the South Dakota American Legion Boys State program, acting as its director for the past 10 years. He was also an active member of a number of community boards and organizations. Darrell was a proud member of the American Legion, VFW, the Beadle Club, Knights of Columbus, and St. Christina Catholic Church, Parker. He was loved and revered by his family as a patient, caring and selfless man. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 47 years, Arlene; three children, Lisa Vanderberg and her husband, Rick, Sioux Falls; Karen Lyle and her husband, Jeff, Sioux Falls, and Mark Salter and his wife Sue, Brandon; six grandchildren, Matt, Erika, Hanah, Christi-ana, Margaret, and Sophia, and a sister, Shirley Scotter, Huron. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services were held on Thursday, April 3, at St. Christina Catholic Church in Parker. Burial with full military honors was in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Huron. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home of Parker.

Lucille McFail
Lucille McFail, 83, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003. Lucille McFail, was born in Parker, Sept. 27, 1919. She was the daughter of Arthur and Millie Herrig. Lucille moved to Min-neapolis, Minn., after high school. She lived in the Minneapolis/ St Paul area for 50 years. After she started having health problems, Lucille moved to Denver to be with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, John B. (Jack) McFail. Lucille is survived by her two daughters, Mary Pfeifer, Denver, Colo., and Sandra Fenton Denver, Colo., and one grandchild, Kerstine Pfeifer, Denver, Colo. Lucille passed away April 1, 2003, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Westminster, Colo. Services were held on Friday, April 4, at Crossroads Baptist Church, Northglenn, Colo. Arrangements were made by National Cremation Ser-vice in Englewood, Colo.

Mayme V. Johnson
Mayme V. Johnson, 89, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Mayme Vera Nowstrup was born on Aug. 30, 1913, in Turner County, to Andrew and Maggie (Larsen) Nowstrup. She graduated from Parker High School in 1931. Mayme married Donald L. Johnson on June 28, 1957, at Luverne, Minn. They farmed south of Parker until their retirement, and they moved into Parker in 1973. She had lived in and around Parker her entire life before moving to the Pioneer Villa in Viborg in 1998. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Grateful for having shared her life are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989, a brother in infancy, and a sister and her husband, Mae and Ervin Budde. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 7, at First Baptist Church in Parker. Burial was in Rosehill cemetery in Parker. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home in Parker.

Esther Berens
Esther Berens, 81, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. Esther Berens was born Oct. 29, 1921 at Irene. Her parents were Soren and Christensa (Christensen) Sorensen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She married Harold Berens in December of 1959 and they lived in the Parker area. She moved to the nursing home in Lennox in December of 2002. Esther passed away on May 29 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Lennox. She had attained the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her parents, her foster parents, Andrew and Carolina Andersen, a son David Morrison, and a sister Hilda Mikkelsen. Esther is survived by her husband Harold of Parker; a son Craig and wife Dee Morrison of Bourbonnais, Ill.; daughter-in-law Diane Morrison of Merrillville, Ind.; five grandchildren: Robert Fitzgerald, Justin Morrison, Jeremy Morrison, Melissa Morrison, Mike Morrison; a brother Walter and wife Wilma Sorensen of Yankton and many other relatives and friends. Services were held on Saturday, May 31 at the Fraternal Burial Association in Viborg. Burial was in the Chancellor Reformed Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Fraternal Burial Association of Viborg.

Vesta Parrish
Vesta I. Parrish, 85, of Sonora died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 at a San Andreas hospital. Vesta was born in Parker, and lived in Sonora for the past 43 years. Vesta completed all 12 grades in Parker and graduated from Parker High School in 1936. She worked as a draftswoman for the U.S. Forest Service in the Sonora office for 25 years. A member of the East Sonora Business Association, she was an antique dealer and owned Antique Junction in East Sonora in the 1970's and 1980's. Family members said she had a passion for antiques and also loved flowers. She was also a member of the Tuolumne County Genealogical Society. Vesta is survived by two sons, Desmond Parrish Jr., of Sonora and Stanley Parish of Fair Oaks; one daughter, Susan Schweickert of Reno, Nev.; one sister, Helen Charleton of Sonora; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Desmond Parrish Sr., in 1994 and a daughter, Joann Parrish, in 1987. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Harold L. Jacobson
Harold L. Jacobson, 60, died Thursday, May 22, 2003. Harold (Homer) L. Jacobson was born July 7, 1942 at Round Lake, Minn. His parents were Floyd and Ruby (Fullwiler) Jacobson. His family moved to Viborg in 1945 when he was three years old. He attended Hillyside #43 county school. He attended high school by walking in the front door and directly out the back door. He married Ethel Nordman on July 16, 1960. He worked for Homer Larsen until 1971 when he and Ethel started farming on their own. He spent almost 24 hours, seven days a week outside doing something at all times. He even managed to keep Ethel and the kids busy too. Horses were a big love, riding or just messing around with them. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Rhodora, and brothers George and Douglas. Harold is survived by his wife Ethel of Hurley, four children, Lisa Smit (Mike Abbas) of Chancellor, Terry (Leslie) of Englewood, Fla., Penny (Kent) Austin of Centerville, and Paul (Jami) of Viborg; eight grandchildren, Mandy, Chase, Tiffany, Billy, Daniel, Jerico, Jeremy, and Faith; eight brothers and sisters Betty (Joe) Ketter of Yankton, Kenny (Carol) of Hudson, Donna (Jim) Bjornebo of Mission Hill, Chuck (Mary) of Freeman, Robert (Bev) of Davis, Bill of Lennox, Doris (Marvin) Johnson of Freeman and Dennis of Hurley; and many other relatives and friends. Services were held on Monday, May 26 at Bethany Lutheran Church of Viborg. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Fraternal Burial Association, Rhoda A. Fredricks was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert J. Elliot
Albert J. Elliot, 75, died Tuesday, May 20 at Sierra Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Elliot was born in Hurley on June 23, 1927. He spent years in the Los Angeles County Fire Department as a fire fighter. He retired to Santa Barbara, Calif., and later to Columbus, N.M. He is survived by his wife, Alice Tyrol-Elliot and two sisters, Beryle Koller of Sioux Falls and Lucille Ehde of Littleton, Colo, as well as several nieces and nephews. At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. Arrangements for cremation have taken place with Harding, Orr McDaniel in El Paso, Texas.

Charles Kaus
Charles Kaus, 78, died on May 23, 2003. Charles Kaus was born March 26, 1925 to William and Johanna (Herrmann) Kaus at Stickney. He served in the US Navy in WW II. Charles married Carrie Uithoven on Feb. 15, 1950. This union was blessed with four children, David (Jean) of Tuscon, Ariz., William (Jeanette) of Freeman, Karen (Robert) Pidde of Freeman, and Kathy Thomas of Parker. He is survived by his wife, his children, 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three sisters, four sister-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Services were held on Tuesday, May 27 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marion. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Walter Funeral Home of Marion.

Rose Dirksen
Rose Dirksen, 96, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003. Rose M. (DeNeui) Dirksen was born on a farm near Chancellor, Nov. 4, 1906, the daughter of John D. and Annie (Dreesman) DeNeui. She attended Home Township Rural School and grew to womanhood there. On Feb. 23, 1928 she was united in marriage to Tebbo Dirksen at Canton. Following their marriage they farmed south of Wall Lake for eight years and then east of Wall Lake for 44 years. In 1980 they retired and moved to Lennox. Her husband preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1987, ending a marriage of over 59 years. She continued to make her home in Lennox and became a resident of the Lennox Good Samaritan Center on Jan. 30, 1992. She was baptized in the Reformed faith and had attended Community Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her father on May 16, 1963, her mother on Sept. 26, 1984; two sisters: Ruth Geiken and Lillian Jacobs; two brothers: David 'Bud" DeNeui and Louis DeNeui. Surviving are her sister, Berdena Meier of Chancellor; her brother, Edward DeNeui and his wife, Lois, of Lennox; her sister-in-law, Anna DeNeui of Chancellor; several nieces and nephews; grand and great-grandnieces and nephews, including a special niece, Marge Stepp and a special great-grandnephew, Austin Nelson. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Dindot-Klusmann Chapel in Lennox. Burial was in the Lennox Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home of Lennox.

Earl Malzer
Earl Henry Malzer, 89, died Nov. 15, 2003. He was born on Feb. 13, 1914 near Hurley to John and Maggie (Nelson) Malzer. He attended rural school district #34, then known as Spring Valley. He also attended and received certificates from Business College. He worked in the grocery business with his parents and brother Elvin in Dolton and Monroe. In 1940 Earl ventured out to California where he landed a job at Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, Calf. Once established, he sent for Marie to join him. They were married in Yuma, Ariz., on Sept. 28, 1941. They resided in Old Town, Calf. During the war, Earl was Air Raid Warden for the neighborhood. In 1944 Earl purchased the Black Diamond Market at the corner of Main and Mollison in El Cajon, Calf. This began a long career in the grocery store business. He went on to own the Homelands Market in Casa De Ore and then in 1949 they moved and purchased the Last Frontier Store in Santee, Calf. In 1959 he went back to work in the aircraft field and later retired. He is survived by his wife Marie; two daughters, Karen and husband Richard Sather and Linda and husband Joe Hall; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren all of El Cajon, Calf.

Earl Sorensen, 88
Earl Sorensen, 88, died on April 3, 2004 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Earl Klitgaard Sorensen was born Feb. 15, l9l6 on a farm west of Viborg. His parents were John A.K. Sorensen and Sena (Sorensen) Sorensen. As a baby, he moved with his parents, three sisters and three brothers west of Turkey Ridge. He attended country school Dist. 27. He served in the US Army Fourth Calvary for four years and seven months during WW II. He was overseas in Europe for 22 months and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After coming home in 1949, he purchased a farm in the Spring Valley area and farmed for 34 years. He married Emma V. Selken on June 7, 1953. They retired and moved into Viborg in 1983, Earl was a member of Spring Valley Lutheran Church, Viborg Senior Citizens, and a life member of the VFW Post where he was quartermaster for 19 years. Earl loved to hunt, fish, play cards, and visit and help out his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Leonard, Marben, and Reuben, and three sisters Lily, Esther Hanson, and Gladys Jensen. Earl is survived by his wife Emma V. of Viborg, eight nephews, seven nieces, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 6, at Spring Valley Lutheran Church in Viborg. Burial was in Spring Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were provided by Fraternal Burial Association, Rhoda A. Fredricks in Viborg.

Wayne Peterson, 86
Wayne Peterson, 86, died on April 3, 2004 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg. Wayne E. Peterson was born June 11, 1917 at Viborg. His parents were Lawrence and Minnie (Nelson) Peterson. He grew up in Daneville and Swan Lake Townships of Viborg and attended country school Dist. 63. He married Ruth Simonsen Dec. 20,1942 and they were married 61 years. He started farming with his brother Melby and continued farming until 1987 when he and Ruth moved into Viborg. He had worked part time at the Farmers Lumber Co. in Viborg. Wayne was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the DBS Lodge where he was a member over 50 years, and was on the Board of Directors of the Scandinavian Coop Creamery. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters Wayne is survived by his wife Ruth of Viborg, daughter Jeannie (Gordon) Knudson of Colman, two grandchildren Ross (Darcy) Knudson of Canton and Holly (Jim) Relf of Colman, five great-grandchildren Lance and Mitchell Relf and Bridgette, Brett, and Brooklyn Knudson, two god-children Mails Hauger and Robert Peterson, one brother Jim (Orleen) of Rapid City, one sister-in-law Arda Peterson of Sioux Falls, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 7, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Viborg. Burial was in the Baptist Cemetery in Viborg. Funeral arrangements were provided for by Fraternal Burial Association, Rhoda A. Fredricks in Viborg.

Helen C. Nelson
Helen C. (Wendt) Nelson, 83, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004. Helen C. (Wendt) Nelson was born at Taylor Falls, Minnesota on April 20, 1921, the daughter of Frederick and Abbie (Goeman) Wendt. She moved to South Dakota with her family and grew up in the Lennox, Davis and Parker areas. On March 30, 1940 she was united in marriage to Leland Smith at Luverne, Minnesota. They farmed in the Parker-Hurley areas and moved to Sioux Falls in 1957. He died on July 3, 1969. Helen was employed for many years at the Minnehaha County Court House as a switchboard operator, bailiff and operated the coffee shop. She married Carl Nelson in December of 1974. They made their home in Sioux Falls and he died in December of 1979. Helen was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Hurley. She also was a member of the V.F.W.Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary in Sioux Falls. Besides her parents and her two husbands she was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Wendt on September 12, 1993 and one sister, Harriet Alberts on October 31, 2000. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter Janice Boomgarden and her husband, Harold, of Lennox; three grandchildren and their spouses: Danny and Kathy Boomgarden, Brenda and Jerome Hult and Stacy and Troi Andernacht; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Nelson and her husband, Clinton, of Sioux Falls: plus her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 29, at Second Reformed Church, Lennox. Burial was in Hurley Cemetery, Hurley. Arrangements were made by Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home of Lennox.

Teresa Hovaldt
Teresa Joan Hovaldt, 73, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004. Teresa Joan Marso was born on Nov. 24, 1930 at Marion, to Frank and Imelda (Feller) Marso. After graduating from Parker High School in 1948 she was united in marriage to Charles Hovaldt on Feb. 26, 1949 at Parker. They lived in Sioux Falls and Parker where she raised her 10 children and worked at various places. Her husband died in 1975. Grateful for having shared her life are five sons, Richard (Vonda) and Barry, both of Sioux Falls, Robert (Cheryl), Hayden, Idaho, Durk (Jean), North Carolina, and Kurt (Brenda) Marshall, Minn.; four daughters, Rhonda, Dawn, and Shawn, all of Sioux Falls, Michelle (Gary) Wentzel, Parker; a daughter-in-law, Chrystal, Parker; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis (Betty), Sioux Falls, Charles (Junelle), Shakopee, Minn.; 10 sisters, Betty Kick and Judy (Ron) Muller, both of Parker, Charlotte (Jim) Spader, Howard; Lavonne (Jack) Tlustos, Hanna, Wyo.; Madonna Crist, Humboldt; Elaine (Jack) Chmielewski, Becker, Minn., Mary (AL) Sullivan, Bellevue, Neb.; Vicki (Maury) Versteeg, and Marleen (Tim) Hirsch, Sioux Falls; and Carol (Rod) Nelson, Colton. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Mark and infant son Dana, and a sister Darleen. Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at St. Christina's Catholic Church, Parker. Burial was in St. Christina's Catholic Cemetery, Parker. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home of Parker.

Max Kraemer
Max B. Kraemer, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls. Max B. Kraemer was born on July 16, 1921 with twin brother Rex at Winamac, Ind. to Gust and Louise (Brinker) Kraemer. He graduated from Parker High School in 1939. On Feb. 24, 1952 he was united in marriage to Lois Gunderson at Parker. He was in partnership with his brother Rex in Kraemer Bros. Trucking where they did custom trucking and farming. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Parker. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Lois, two children, Steven and wife Jan, Marion, and Kristin Smart and husband Terry, Lyons; a brother Maynard and wife Ruth, Brookings; a sister-in-law, Johanna, Parker; and four grandchildren, Bryan, Kyle, Erin, and Eric. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother Rex. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 11 at Grace Lutheran Church, Parker. Burial was in Rosehill Cemetery, Parker. Arrangements were made by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home of Parker.

Edna Busmann
Edna Dorothea (Brower) Busmann, 89, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004. Edna was born on a farm near Lennox on Oct. 3, 1915, the daughter of Harm and Gertie (Wallenstein) Brower. She attended country school and then moved to Bryant. On Nov. 24, 1952 she was united in marriage to Raymond Busmann at Bryant. Following their marriage they lived in Bryant, Worthing and Harrisburg. They farmed most of their life and became custodians at the Harrisburg School for several years until they retired. Her husband died on July 1, 1994. She moved to Sunrise Manor in Lennox and then briefly to Hilda's Heritage Home. She then became a resident of Good Samaritan Luther Manor in Sioux Falls. Edna enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles and flowers. Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Paula Henriksen, one sister, Henrietta Jansen and one brother, George Brower. Grateful for having shared her life are her two children and their spouses: Darla Mae and Larry Henriksen of Worthing and Allen Gene and Debra Lynn Busmann of Sioux Falls; grandchildren; Luke (Jackie) Henriksen, David (Andrea) Henriksen, Aaron Busmann and Christopher Busmann; step-grandchildren: Amber Wollan and Nathan Wollan; one brother: Lester (Mary) Brower of Westside, Iowa and one sister-in-law Venita Quam of Watertown as well several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funerals services were held Friday, Oct. 8 at Dindot-Klusmann Chapel, Lennox. Burial was in Worthing Cemetery, Worthing. Arrangements were made by Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home of Lennox.

Kevin Knudsen
Kevin Lynn Knudsen, 42, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004. Kevin was born Nov. 28, 1961 to Robert and Mary Ellen (Nissen) Knudsen in Yankton. Kevin grew up in Viborg and graduated from Viborg High School in 1980. He married Karen Miller on April 8, 1985. He has worked various jobs around the Sioux Falls area, and was employed by Cross Country Courier of Sioux Falls at the time of his death. Kevin was an avid Chicago Bears fan, and enjoyed golfing, camping with family and friends, and watching most sports, especially NASCAR and football. His greatest joy was attending the many activities of his children. Kevin is survived by his wife, Karen of Viborg; children, Mandy, Jordan, MiKayla, Sage, Keeley, and Tori; his mother, Mary Ellen Nielsen of Sioux Falls; his step-mother, Dori Knudsen of Viborg; a sister, Kelly Bohrer of Sioux Falls; step-siblings; and many other dear friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Viborg School Gym. Burial was in Viborg Baptist Cemetery, rural Viborg. Arrangements were made by Hansen Funeral Home of Irene.

Robert Rist
Robert W. Rist, 86, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004. Robert was born Jan. 10, 1918 near Centerville to parents William J. and Barbara (Neher) Rist. Robert was born and lived on the home farm all his life. He was educated at the nearby rural school. Robert farmed with his brother, Melvin, until 1992. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, rural Centerville and was currently a member of Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Robert served in the US Army in the Philippine Islands during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Centerville Post 43. He was a great baseball fan who loved watching the games on TV. Robert spent much of his time visiting those who were ill, hospitalized, in area nursing homes or confined to their homes. He was a friend to everyone. Robert also took care of the many cats that lived on his farm. Preceding him in death were his parents and four brothers, Roy, Ervin, Henry and Melvin. Survivors include one brother, Dr. Harold Rist of Borger, Texas, one sister-in-law, Oney Rist of Centerville, nine nieces and nephews and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 9 at Scandia Lutheran Church, Centerville. Burial was in Grace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Centerville. Arrangements were made by Wass Home for Funerals, Centerville.

Frieda Stoffers
Frieda (Fischer) Stoffers, 82, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004. Frieda was born on a farm northwest of Lennox on Sept. 3, 1922, the daughter of Fred and Aalke (Schoffelman) Fischer. She grew up there and attended Schoffelman School, District #3. On Dec. 30, 1941 she was united in marriage to Edwin Stoffers at Hartington, Neb. They farmed most of their married life northwest of Lennox and moved into Lennox in 1995. Frieda was employed at the Lennox Senior Citizens Center for the past 17 years, until she had a stroke on Friday, Sept. 3. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Lennox. She was also active in RSVP and the Lennox Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her father on May 2, 1974, her mother on March 21, 1976; her husband, Edwin, on Dec. 11, 1999; two sons: one in infancy on Oct. 2, 1953 and Darwin, at the age of 17, on Aug. 1, 1962; four sisters: Kate DeNeui on April 28, 2000, Alice Straatmeyer on Aug. 7, 2000, Rose Lovaas on Dec. 31, 2000 and Anna DeNeui on March 12, 2004. Frieda suffered a stroke on Sept. 3 of this year and became a resident of the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. Grateful for having shared her life are three sons and their wives: Erwin and Betty Staffers of New Castle, Wyo., LaRon and Paula Stoffers of Hurley and Larry and Laura Stoffers of Worthing; seven grandchildren: Cynthia, Terry, Christine, Shawn, Tony, Cory and Jacqueline; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives: Alfred and Lucille Fischer and Delmar and Ardis Fischer, all of Tea; one sister: Joan Oursland of Sioux Falls; plus several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at First English Lutheran Church, Lennox. Burial was in Lennox Cemetery, Lennox. Arrangements were made by Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home of Lennox.

Lowell Voog
Lowell C. Voog, 80, died, Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004. Lowell was born Feb. 9, 1924 in Sisseton to parents Axel and Martina (Seal) Voog. Lowell moved with his parents to Centerville when he was four years old. He attended Joy rural school and graduated from Centerville High School in 1942. He was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1945 and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. He served in the Army until his honorable discharge in November of 1946 when he returned to Centerville and continued his lifelong occupation as a farmer. Lowell married Priscilla Andersen on Feb. 4, 1950. The couple resided in the Centerville area. Priscilla died in 1964 and Lowell continued to farm and live in the area until his death. Lowell was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of Scandia Lutheran Church. He also belonged to the Centerville American Legion. Lowell loved so many things about the farm. He enjoyed restoring old tractors and farm equipment as well as antiques. He belonged to the Dakota Heritage Society and competed in National Corn Husking contests and thoroughly enjoyed all the friends he made during his involvement. Lowell's greatest joy in life was his family and especially loved being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Priscilla, two brothers, Melvin and Arnie, and four sisters, Alida, Evelyn, Mildred, and Arlet. Survivors include two sons: Lauren Voog and wife Kathleen of New London, Minn. and Bruce Voog and wife Sandra of Centerville; daughter Karen Johnson and husband Mike of Yankton; seven grandchildren: Justin and Lucas Voog, Ashlea and Rachael Johnson, and Evan, Peter, and Alex Voog; three brothers: Casper Voog and wife Vera of Beresford, Martin Voog and wife LaVonna of Centerville, and Ellsworth Voog and wife Harriet of Sioux Falls; two sisters: Marcella Hietzman of Emerson, Neb. and Juna Carlson and husband Oliver of Beresford; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; and special friend Delores Twite of Beresford. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville. Arrangements were made by Wass Home for Funerals of Centerville.
