She attended Yankton Public School and graduated from Yankton High School in 1935. She married Earl Holbrook on July 21, 1936, in Father Link's parsonage. They lived their whole life in Yankton. Lucille worked as a clerk at J.J. Newberry's until it closed. She is survived by her husband, Earl; one daughter: Erla (Arthur) Scherschligt, Estherville, Iowa; one son: Rod "Butch" (Irene) Holbrook, Simi Valley, Calif.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister: Mary Jane Mount, Yankton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

YANKTON -- Frances J. Loecker, 83, Yankton, died Sunday, (August 19, 2001) at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, Neb., with the Rev. Mark Merkel and the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Loecker, Brad Loecker, Kevin Loecker, Darrin Loecker, Cory Loecker and Mark Broders. Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. today (Monday) at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary followed by an 8 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. She was born to Herry and Elizabeth (Hellman) Merkel on Sept. 2, 1917, in Beaver Creek, Neb. She married Martin Loecker in Menominee, Neb., on March 30, 1937. She lived her entire life in the Menominee area. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and quilting. She is survived by three sons: Vern (Marilyn), Yankton; Melvin (Tillie), Crofton, Neb; Duane (Shirley), Crofton, Neb.; one daughter, Deb (Dan) Broders, Yankton; one sister: Hilda Kuehn, Fordyce, Neb.; fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, two infant grandchildren and five brothers.

AVON -- Albert Roth, 79, Avon, died Friday (Aug. 17, 2001), at Avera St. Benedict Hospital, Parkston. Funeral Services are at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Tripp. Burial will be in the Gracehill Cemetery, Tripp. Visitation will be from 11a.m. - 7:30 p.m. today (Monday) with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon. He was born Feb. 8, 1922, in rural Avon to Theodor and Katharina Roth. He attended Daisy School #67 through the eighth grade. He married Mildred Kocmich at Tripp on June 24, 1947. They farmed north of Avon. In 1951, they moved to the farm where they homesteaded. They moved into Avon in 1992. He will be remembered for his love of the farm and cattle. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; one son: Roger (Brenda), Tripp; two brothers: Walter, Tripp; and Norbert, Yankton; one sister: Agnes Thum, Scotland; three grandchildren, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and six brothers.

Darrell L. Radack, 84, Yankton, died Monday (Sept. 30, 2002) at his daughter's home in Yankton. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton. Pallbearers are John Radack, Rob Radack, John Brady, Ben Radack, Steven Foster and Jeff Foster. Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. Thursday at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. conducted by St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 1 A.F. & A.M. He was born Sept. 22, 1918, at Avon to Robert and Laura (Mattis) Radack. He attended Avon schools and graduated from the Avon High School in 1936. On Nov. 10, 1937, he married Darlene J. "Dolly" Ramsdell. They then moved to Yankton where he was employed by the Nash Finch Company. He entered the United States Navy Nov. 19, 1943, and was honorably discharged Dec. 20, 1945. On March 1, 1954, he was hired as the assistant steward at the South Dakota Human Services Center. He then became what was then called the assistant superintendent. In January 1974, he served as superintendent or what is now called administrator until October 1977. After working for more then 28 years at the institution he retired in April 1982. He also was a part-time realtor, most recently with Coldwell Banker. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a life member of the Elks Lodge No. 994 and the American Legion. He was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 1 A.F. & A.M. and a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite, he received the 32nd degree, invested with the KCCH Honor and coroneted with the 33rd degree. He was also a member of the Lewis & Clark Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters and El Riad Shrine Temple and Divan. He served as Captain of the Guard of the Divan in 1973. He is survived by his wife, Dolly; two sons, Jerry Radack, Yankton, and Michael Radack, Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Kathy (Steve) Brick, Yankton; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, a grandson and three brothers. Memorials may be made to the Shrine's Crippled Children Hospitals.

CORSICA -- Corstiaan J. De Waard, 85, Corsica, died Tuesday (Oct. 1, 2002) at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center, Corsica. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Friday at the Harrison Christian Reformed Church, Harrison, with burial following in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Armour. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today (Thursday) with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Clements-Wiese Funeral Home, Armour. He was born Dec. 31, 1916, to Jacob and Bertha (Niewenhuis) De Waard in Aurora County. He attended rural school in Aurora County and one year at Stickney High School. He picked corn in Northwest Iowa. He married Katherine De Vries Nov. 21, 1940, on the De Waard farm near Stickney. He farmed with his father for three years before moving to Douglas County to farm. He was a member of Harrison Christian Reformed Church, Harrison, where he served as an alder for many years. He enjoyed wind energy and his family. He is survived by his wife, Katherine, Armour; five children: Berneta De Waard, Hudson, Wis.; Helen (Dave) Beukelman, Lincoln, Neb; Norma (John) Flavin, Hudson, Wis.; Jay (Mary) De Waard, Armour; and Carolyn (David) De Hoogh, Des Moines, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter De Waard, Stickney; and four sisters: Eunice VanDerWerff, Sioux Falls; Amy De Vries, Omaha, Neb.; Phyllis ZanZee, Corsica; and Ada Scholten, Corsica. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two sons-in-law.

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Lisbeth J. Kleven, 44, Bellevue, Neb., died Tuesday (Oct. 1, 2002) after a lenghty illness at the Bergan Mercy Hospital, Omaha. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bellevue Christian Center. Visitation is form 6-9 p.m. Friday at the church. A memorial service will also be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the West Concord, Minn., Historical Center, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hegre Lutheran Church Cemetery, Kenyon, Minn. She was born April 24, 1958, at Brooklyn, N.Y., to Knut and Judith Vikre. They moved back to Skien, Norway, where she grew up and attended school. She was an AFS Exchange student at West Concord High School in 1976-77. She married Emery L. Kleven July 1, 1978, in Porsgrunn, Norway, and moved to the family farm at West Corncord. Later they lived in Owatonna, Minn.; Sioux City, Iowa; West Point, Neb.; Yankton; and most recently in Bellevue. She was a homemaker, realtor and piano teacher. She also home-schooled her children. She played piano at several churches she attended. She also attended St. Olaf College. She is survived by her husband, Emery, Bellevue; two daughters: Venche Kleven and Bente Kleve, both of Tusla, Okla.; two sons: Isaac and Caleb, both at home; her parents, Knut and Judith, Skien; two sisters: Hanne Karin Vikre and Lina Skifjeld, both of Skien; and one brother, Thorleif Vikre, Porsgrunn.

Willard W. Matuska, age 87, of Tabor, passed away early Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall, S.D. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, with Rev. William Osborn officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron Bruna, Mike Slama, Gary Kronaizl, Todd Williamson, Todd Matuska and Brad Matuska. Visitations will be 1-5 p.m. at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor, with a Scripture service followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor. Willard was born Aug. 28, 1915, at Tabor, S.D., to Joe and Rose (Kotalik) Matuska. He was baptized at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor. He married Bernadine Becvar Sept. 10, 1940. He lived all of his live on a farm near Tabor. He was a baseball player for the Tabor Blue Birds; a part-time police officer for Czech Days and the Beseda Hall; president of the Catholic Sokal Social Club; a Beseda Hall director for many years; a bus driver for Bon Homme Schools; and an active participant in Tabor Czech Plays. Willard's memory is cherished by his wife of 62 years, Bernadine of Tabor; one daughter, Connie Miller of Sturgis, S.D.; one son, Ron (Jeanette) of Red Wing, Minn.; one brother, Leonard (LaVelle) of Lake Andes, S.D.; three grandchildren: Todd (Jennifer) Matuska of Ham Lake, Minn.; Brad (Nicole) Matuska of Cold Spring, Minn.; and Melanie (Todd) Williamson of Newell, S.D.; nine great grandchildren: Tyler, Megan, Tara Jean and Mandie Sue of Newell, S.D.; Jack, Will and Charlie of Cold Spring, Minn.; and Mitchell and Sidney of Ham Lake, Minn.; and three sisters: Norma, Margaret and Marcella, all of Lake Andes, S.D. She was born July 23, 1921, at Avon to Edward and Elizabeth (Gange) Stimpson Sr. She married William H. French Sr. Sept. 3, 1940, at Avon. She worked in hospitals and rest homes for most of her life. She will be remembered for her enjoyment of gardening, doing puzzles and fishing. She is survived by two daughters: Rose (Leo) Spradlin, Stevensville, Mont., and Donna (Alvin) Andersen, Ravinia; three sons: William and Leslie French, both of Wagner, and Richard French, Sioux City, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Beverly French, Stevensville; two half-brothers: Edward Stimpson, Wagner, and Ike Boerman of California; three half-sisters: Betty Carnes, Beresford; Roschell Smith, Ft. Dodge, Iowa; and Vicky Remington, Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 22, 1992, her parents and four brothers.

VERMILLION -- Albert Lee Johanneson, 64, Vermillion, died Monday (April 7, 2003) at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Lake Andes. Burial follows in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lake Andes. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Koehn Brothers Funeral Home, Lake Andes. He was born Dec. 15, 1938, at Lake Andes to Severt and Viola (Millage) Johanneson. He attended Goose Lake 21 Country School, rural Lake Andes. He farmed on the family farm near Lake Andes with his brothers. He moved to Yankton for a number of years and then moved to Vermillion. He is survived by two brothers: Ray Johanneson and James Johanneson, both of Lake Andes; and three sisters: Alice Johanneson, Wagner; Violet Johanneson, Mitchell; and Alma Miller, Houston, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Eleanor Graber
Eleanor Graber, age 78, of Yankton, passed away early Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, S.D. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Chapel in Yankton. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery, Yankton, S.D. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Eleanor was born on Dec. 31, 1924, to John and Betty (Wilson) Krantz in Alcester, S.D. She grew up in the Alcester area and attended the Finn School, rural Alcester. Eleanor moved with her family to Sioux Falls in the spring of 1946 where she attended Nettleton Business School. While in Sioux Falls, she worked at Frosted Lockers. Eleanor moved with her family to Brewster, Minn., in 1947. She worked at Egger Lumber in Worthington, Minn., until she married Dale Morrill in 1950 in Brewster, Minn. They lived in rural Madison until Dale's death in 1951. She worked in the banking system in Madison. On April 25, 1955, Eleanor married Erwin Graber in Forestburg, S.D., and moved to Menno, S.D., where they owned and operated the Gamble Hardware Store. In 1961, Erwin and Eleanor moved to Viborg, S.D., where Eleanor worked for Turner Hutchinson Rural Electric Cooperative from 1964 to her retirement in 1990. Eleanor served one term on the Viborg School Board and was active in the Viborg Ambulance service as a volunteer EMT and also as the secretary. She also served as the resident manager for the Blaine Street Apartments in Viborg. In 1990, Erwin and Eleanor moved to Yankton where they continued to live to the present time. Eleanor is survived by her husband, Erwin of Yankton; a daughter, Betty (Duane) Simmons of Selah, Wash.; her son, Daniel (Shannon) Graber of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren: Nathan and Cody Simmons and Annika and Grant Graberone; one brother, Donald of Madera, Calif.; and two sisters: Ethel Cassens of Mitchell, S.D., and Alice Hartsuiker of Pace, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and a baby sister, Alice.

She was born Nov. 28, 1929, southwest of Delmont, to Raymond and Anna (Frey) Guether. She attended the Buhler Country School, near Delmont. She married Wallace Peters March 7, 1948, at Delmont. She was baptized into the Zion Lutheran Church May 18, 1948. She worked in Delmont restaurants as a waitress, was a homemaker and touched the hearts of many kids with her daycare service. She has been a member of the Delmont American Legion Auxiliary for 41 years and has held various offices during that time. She also enjoyed bowling. She is survived by her husband, Wallace, Delmont; four daughters: Mae (Dick) Gunnare, Delmont; Julie (David) Brenner, Delmont; Francine (Ken) Kocmick, St. Peter, Minn.; and Susan (Bryan) Bietz, Gillette, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one sister, Arles Guether, Delmont; three brothers: Jerry Guether, Delmont; Sidney Guether, Delmont; and Bob Geuther, Mt. Vernon; and one sister-in-law, Delaine Guether, Dimock. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crofton, with the Rev. Bob English officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) with a 7 p.m. vigil service and a 7:30 p.m. Christian Mothers rosary at the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton. She was born Sept. 18, 1927, at Constance, Neb., to Ludwig and Catherine (Schumacher) Bruder. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Constance, St. Rose School in Crofton and graduated from Crofton High School in 1945. She worked at WNAX for many years. She married Jerome C. Mischke May 14, 1947, at Yankton. They farmed and raised registered Hereford cattle northwest of Crofton with her husband's brothers. Her husband died Jan. 13, 2002. She battled cancer for many years. She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and guild, the Christian Mothers and Crofton Women's Club. She and her husband traveled extensively. She loved to work jigsaw puzzles, bake and decorate cakes, play cards, attend antique sales and collect marbles. She is survived by her husband's siblings: Cyrus Mischke, Crofton; Gordon Mischke, Crofton; Lois Folkers, Crofton; Vivian Bruder, Crofton; and John Bruder, Crescent City, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four brothers.

Carl Dalseide
COOS BAY, Ore. -- Carl Dale Dalseide, 79, Coos Bay, Ore., died Wednesday (Nov. 26, 2003) at the SCMC Hospice Courage Cottage, Morris, Ore. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Morris, with the Rev. Todd Mattson officiating. Burial is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Canton. Serving as pallbearers are his nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Pedersen Funeral Home, Morris, is in charge of the arrangements. Carl was born in Hudson to the Rev. Carl and Tillie (Iverson) Dalseide. When he was about age 8, the family moved to Parkside, Saskatchewan. During the 1930s, his parents bought a farm near Cameo, Saskatchewan, where Carl helped out and attended rural school. In about 1940, his father moved the family to Ambrose, ND. Carl drove tractors and up to five-horse teams for local farmers. On Dec. 10, 1943, Carl entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn. During the war against Japan he served as a crane operator in the 738th Engineers Base Depot Company. He served in New Guinea, the Philippines and finally in Japan, with occupation forces. He was discharged on April 9, 1946. Carl spent several years doing farm work and over the road trucking to Minneapolis. He then moved to Southern California, where he worked for McDonnell Aircraft Company. In 1956, Carl moved to Coos Bay. He worked in the saw mills for Georgia Pacific and Weyerhaeuser Lumber Company. He was proud of the hard physical work he was able to do. Carl always took great interest in his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed visiting the "home farm" no matter where it had been, including Fergus Falls and Morris. He was interested in the threshing shows at Rollog and Dalton, Minn., and at Brooks, Ore. He was a life member of the Elks. Survivors include two brothers: Ivan, Morris; and Clifford, Fredricksburg, Va.; his sister: Thelma Thielsen, Milwaukee; one brother-in-law: Frank Miralgio, Chicago; and many nephews and nieces and their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and three brothers.

ARMOUR -- Edward L. Patocka, 86, Armour, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 2003) at Douglas County Memorial Hospital, Armour. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Armour, with burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Armour. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Koehn Brothers Funeral Home, Armour. Edward was born Sept. 6, 1917, near Geddes to Joseph and Anna (Lunak) Patocka. He attended country school near Lake Andes. He worked for the Civil Conservation Corp. in Rapid City. He was in the U.S. Army. He married Cecelia Marten June 11, 1946, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Lake Andes. They lived in lake Andes for two years, then moved to a farm south of Armour. They then moved to a farm north of Armour and farmed there for 38 years until retiring to Armour in 1982. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Armour; Knights of Columbus; VFW; American Legion; NRA and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed gardening, reading and hunting. Survivors include his wife, Cecelia, Armour; two children: Donald (Louise) Patocka, Sandy, Utah; and Thomas Patocka, Tamuning, Guam; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, two brothers and two sisters.

Gil Kaiser
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Gilbert J. Kaiser, 79, La Jolla, Calif., died Oct. 24, 2003, at his home. Funeral services were held Oct. 30, 2003, at All Hallows Catholic Church, La Jolla. Burial with full military honors was held at El Camino Memorial Park, San Diego. Pacific Beach Mortuary, La Jolla, handled the arrangements. Gil was born March 22, 1924, in St. Helena, Neb., to Jacob and Theresa (Schoof) Kaiser. He attended grade school in St. Helena and graduated from Hartington Holy Trinity High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy and served 32 years, retiring as a commander. He married Mary Ann Sudbeck July 27, 1946, in Hartington. She died in April 1997. Survivors include his sons: James, San Diego, and Thomas, Palm Springs, Calif.; a daughter, Terri Kaiser Spencer, San Diego; his brothers: Andrew, Crofton, Neb.; Larry, St. James, Neb.; Clair, San Diego; and Benny, St. Helena; his sisters: Dorothy Schnieders, Randolph, Neb.; Wilma Hochstein, Coleridge, Neb.; Mary Rose Collier, Denver; and Geraldine Schumacher, Crofton; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Mary O. Thomas
Mary O. Thomas, 87, of Yankton, SD and formerly of Galesburg IL, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. There will be a congregation of Mary's friends and family at the Peace Presbyterian Church, 206 E. 31st St. in Yankton at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 to celebrate Mary's life. Rev. Ken Woodhams will be officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be in Galesburg, IL, where her parents rest. Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, will be in charge of arrangements. Mary was born April 29, 1916, in London Mills, IL, to Walter and Irene (Schuler) Ulm. She grew up and attended school in London Mills and as well as the Methodist Church. The family moved to Galesburg, IL, during the Depression and she graduated from Galesburg High School and later graduated from Browns Business College. She was married, had three children and divorced Ernest Thomas. She raised her children, with the help of her parents, working as a stenographer for the Burlington Northern Railroad. She wore chiffon dresses to the Coliseum Ballroom in Davenport, IA. She loved music, dancing, convertibles, Milky Way candy bars, swimming, singing toys and she loved hats. She loved to sing and swing with her special friend Howard Goers of Clinton, IA, who passed away in December 2003. She moved to Yankton, SD, in January 2004 and has made friends at Peace Presbyterian Church, Yankton Senior Center, Memory Lane Apartments, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton Medical Clinic and Yankton Care Center. The community of Yankton opened their arms and hearts to Mary O. Mary's memory and joy of life will be cherished by her three children: Carole (Gary) Kling of Yankton, SD, Charles Thomas of San Diego, CA, and Scott Thomas of San Francisco, CA; five grandchildren: Barbara and Patrick Kling, Matthew, Jenny and Emily Thomas; three great-grandchildren, AJ and Hailey Kling and Jessica Wagner have had the opportunity to know Gramma GG. CENTERVILLE -- Services for Gladys Westling will be held Monday, April 5, at the Centerville Federated United Church of Christ with burial at Komstad Cemetery, rural Centerville, SD. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m. with family present from 2-3 p.m. at the Wass Funeral Home in Centerville. Gladys J. Westling was born September 15, 1909 in Viborg, SD, to parents Fred and Annie (Fredrickson) Nelson. She died April 1, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville, SD, at the age of 94 years. Gladys attended rural school and graduated from Viborg High School in 1926. She married Floyd Westling on February 15, 1927. The couple resided in the Centerville area. Floyd died in 1967 and Gladys continued to live here until the present time. Gladys was a member of the Centerville Federated United Church of Christ where she was active in the Women's Fellowship. Gladys and Floyd enjoyed bowling, dancing, and attending various sporting events together. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo and the Centerville Senior Citizens Center. Her hobbies were knitting and crocheting and she made numerous afghans and slippers for family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Floyd, two brothers, one sister, and an infant child. Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are her son, Jon Westling and wife, Kit, of Springfield, SD; two daughters: Claire Jacobsen and husband, Robert, of Sioux Falls, SD; and Patricia Thomsen and husband, Norman, of Providence Forge, VA; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Nelson of Viborg, SD; sister-in-law, Gladys Paulsen of Viborg, SD; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Sister Blanche Kribell
Sister Blanche Kribell, 84, died peacefully at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Wednesday evening, June 2, 2004. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 7, in the Bishop Marty Chapel, with burial following in the monastery cemetery. The Vespers wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 6 in the chapel. Kostel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Margaret Agnes Kribell was born January 8, 1920, to Thomas and Helen (McIlvenna) Kribell on the family farm near Emmett, SD, the sixth in the family of nine. Her favorite childhood activity was horseback riding. She attended Brule Valley rural school for eight years, and graduated from Mount Marty Academy in 1937. She entered the monastery that same year, and made monastic profession as Sister Blanche on June 24, 1939. Two days later she began nurses' training at Sacred Heart Hospital, receiving her R.N. diploma in 1942. Further education included earning a BSN degree from Creighton University in 1955, and post-graduate studies at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, and Columbia University, NY. Sister Blanche's illustrious professional career began at Sacred Heart Hospital in 1942, and continued there for the next 54 years with the exception of short assignments at St. Thomas More Hospital, Canon City, CO, and St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall. She ministered as staff nurse, night supervisor, obstetrical supervisor, pediatric supervisor, perinatal clinician, and nursing instructor. "The highlight of my life," she once said, "was caring for sick babies and mothers." She assisted in more than 30,000 deliveries and because of her phenomenal memory could relate stories of the circumstances of most of them. Numerous honors came to Sister Blanche over the years, the most recent her induction into the S.D. Hall of Fame in the fall of 2003 as a professional, educator and pioneer in perinatal care. She was named S.D. Nurse of the Year in 1982, received the 1986 Nurse Alum Award from Creighton University, and named the Pioneer Nurse of the Year in 1987 by the Perinatal Association. She was a charter member of the National Obstetrical/ Gynecological Association begun in 1968 and was its chair for two years. In 1988 she joined a group of obstetrical specialists on an educational tour of several medical schools in the Communist bloc of Eastern Europe, and lectured on topics related to obstetrics. S. Blanche retired to the monastery in 1997, continuing to volunteer at the hospital as sacristan and patient visitor. Cooking became a favorite hobby in her retirement. She is remembered as a loving, dedicated, caring, but very demanding nurse. "I could never have done what I have," she said, "if I were not a Benedictine Sister. I loved my work, and will always be a nurse." She is survived by her monastic community; one sister Florence, Yankton; one brother, Joe, Sturgis, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and five sisters.

TYNDALL -- Cecelia Schuurmans passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Beverly Healthcare Center in Armour at the age of 92 years. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Tyndall, South Dakota, with the Rev. Fr. Gerald Thury officiating. Interment is in the Tyndall Cemetery, Tyndall, South Dakota. Casketbearers are Terry Balvin, Bill Mains, Kevin McLouth, Dan Schuurmans, Darrel Schuurmans and Robert Schuurmans. Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall, South Dakota. Cecelia B. Schuurmans was born on June 7, 1911, in Avon, South Dakota to John and Sophia (Stafford) Krall. She graduated from Beadle College in Madison, South Dakota and taught school in Tyndall and Yankton. Cecelia was united in marriage to Gerrit B. Schuurmans on December 26, 1950, in Tyndall. They owned and operated the Tyndall Variety Store for many years. She enjoyed doing craftwork, camping and outdoor activities, especially picnics and bonfires. Cecelia was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, St. Leo's Altar Society and the Catholic Forresters. She is survived by her sister, Margarette Schuurmans and brother-in-law, Dr. Morris Schuurmans of Wagner, South Dakota; and three nieces and one nephew. Cecelia was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit Schuurmans; and her parents. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Beverly Healthcare Center in Armour.

Interment is in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota. Hilda Viola Baltzer was born on August 30, 1909, in Harbine, Nebraska, to Albert and Clara (Schnuelle) Grosshuesch. She was united in marriage to Arthur E. Baltzer on March 1, 1931, at the Reformed Church in Scotland. They farmed in the Kaylor area until 1943, when they moved to Kaylor due to Arthur's ill health. Hilda was steadfast in her role as caregiver over the years, caring not only for Art during his illness, but also her entire family. She enjoyed quilting, her flowers and her garden, and she loved to travel. Hilda was at ease around people and her friendly nature was always welcoming to friends, family and strangers alike. She was a successful Tupperware dealer for many years, a job she enjoyed not only for the extra money it brought, but also for the opportunity to get out of the house and meet new people. She had been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kaylor, until moving to Scotland in 1984 when she became a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Hilda was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Grateful for having shared Hilda's life are her son, Gary (Doris) Baltzer of Tabor, South Dakota, granddaughters: Wanda (Bob) Logan and Cheryl (Will) Bruner, and great-grandchildren: Paul, Molly and Mariah Logan; son Dennis (Elaine) Baltzer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, grandsons: Craig (Marilyn) Baltzer and Troy (Rhonda) Baltzer, and great-grandchildren Jenna and Cooper Baltzer; and daughter Judy (Al) Stemper of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and grandsons Mark Stemper and Bradley Stemper; two brothers: Eldon Grosshuesch of Benson, Minnesota, and Robert Grosshuesch of Yankton, South Dakota; and a sister, Viola Brott of Beatrice, Nebraska. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, on April 13, 1980, her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Alfred Anderson
Our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa (Big Pa Pa and G'G'Daddy), Alfred Anderson, 97 1/2, years young in spirit and soul, but tired in body, left Clarkson Mt. View Guest Home and woke up in heaven the morning of Sunday, October 24, 2004. His wife Marie (Young), daughter Marlys Seiner, parents Martin and Suzanna Anderson, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, and 1 grand daughter-in-law welcomed him at Heaven's door with open arms. Alfred was born in Walback, NE, on February 28, 1907. He came to South Dakota in 1920 and married Marie Young on Dec. 18, 1929. They had 2 daughters: Marlys Ann and Joyce Kay. He farmed the land near Gayville, SD, until 1947 and then moved to the Westerville area near Vermillion, until retirement. They built a house in 1977 in Gayville and lived their retirement years there until 1993 when they moved to Rapid City to be near their daughter, Joyce. He is a member of the Pleasant Valley Church in rural Vermillion. He so loved fishing and camping with many memories of this with his good neighbors in Westerville. They enjoyed his longed-for retirement trip to Denmark to visit and learn of family on his mother's side. He shared many stories with our family, as most important to him was his Love and time with his family. Many hearts are filled with sadness as Alfred leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Roger Opp of Rapid City; son-in-law, Clarence Seiner of California; 1 sister, Helen Hague of Arizona. Five grandchildren: Cheryl (Mike) Braham, Douglas Seiner, Kevin (Jerri) Opp, Mike (Susan) Opp, and Kim (Dennis) Koster; and 11 great-grandchildren, 2 step great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was one amazing man, and will live in our hearts forever! Alfred will be laid to rest next to his wife at Pleasant Valley Cemetery after services at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion, at a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2004. Visitation will be one hour before the services.
