DENNIE HALEN DAVIS
Dennie Halen Davis, 89 passed away on June 8, 2004 at Asbury Place in Maryville, Tennessee. He was born on November 22, 1914, in Tazewell, TN. He was the son of Charlie H. and Martha Bolton Davis of the Little Sycamore Community of Claiborne County. Halen was retired form the Aluminum Company of American after forty years of employment. During his employment at Alcoa he worked as a crane operator at the South Plant, Alcoa, Tennessee. He was a member of the Alcoa Twenty-five Year Club and had been an active member of The United Steelworkers Local 309 having served the union as an elected official for several years. Immediate family survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Winston H. (Sid) and Jeanette Payne Davis of Maryville, TN. Other family members include: sister-in-law, Marie Davis of Oak Ridge, TN; sister-in-law, Mrs. Brice Philpot of Oak Ridge; nieces and nephews include: James D. (Buzz) Reed of Chattanooga, TN, Elizabeth Davis Lovingood of Oak Ridge, Joy Philpot of Oak Ridge, Halen Philpot of Oak Ridge, Linda Philpot Morrison of Oak Ridge, Julie Seals Williams of Maryville, and Shannon Seals Warren of Alcoa, TN. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Smith Mortuary followed by the funeral service. Reverend Bob Dalton, Associate Pastor of Monte Vista Baptist Church will deliver the funeral service. Entombment will be held following the funeral service at Grandview Mausoleum. OSCAR HENRY ERVIN
Oscar Henry Ervin, age 89 of 630 Creek Road, Reliance, passed away 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at his home. Member of Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was the oldest deacon and served as choir director for 60 years. Son of the late Patrick and Mary Green Ervin. Born December 11, 1914 at Bullet Creek, Tennessee where he raised his family and was a farmer and logger on the family farm.
Survivors: wife of 70 years, Zula Hamby Ervin; eight children and spouses -- Beuna and Bobby Smith, Merrillville, IN, McKinnley and Faye Ervin, Maryville, Jean and Robert Price, Reliance, Alma Thompson, Madisonville, David and Betty Ervin, Maryville, Jerald and Peggy Ervin, Niota, Jerry and Willene Ervin, Reliance, Linda Dodson, Athens; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren' 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by sister, Annie Ervin Norwood; brothers, Homer and Abner Ervin; son-in-law, Rev. Robert Thompson.
Funeral 2:00 p.m. Friday, Union Grove Baptist Church, Pastor Kenneth Watson officiating. Interment in Maple Springs Baptist Cemetery. His children will serve as pallbearers. Body will lie-in-state at the church one hour before service. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Tellico Plains.

ROBERT L. RIEGLE
Robert L. Riegle, age 81, of Maryville, passed away at his home Tuesday, June 8, 2004. He was a member of Alcoa First Baptist Church. He was born in Steubenville, OH to Lee Montel and Cora Jane Marks Riegle. He served in the US Navy as an Aviation Metalsmith 1st Class aboard the USS Albermarle in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Mr. Riegle was particularly proud of co-authoring a text book on metallurgy for Ohio State University. He was retired from Williams & Co., Inc, a division of Westinghouse and was a volunteer at Blount Memorial Hospital for more than fifteen years. He is survived by his loving wife, Genell Riegle; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Norma Riegle of Maryville, Robert and Lisa Riegle of Orlando, FL, Steven and Grace Riegle of Houston, TX; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Mickey Anderson and Ronda Horton all of Maryville; sister, Mildred Hicks of Washington Court House, OH; grandchildren, Eric and Belinda Riegle, Amy and David Rajack, Jodee Riegle, Todd Riegle, David and Shelly Anderson, Andy and Heather Anderson, Sarah Anderson, John Horton, Randie Parkins; and nine great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2004 in the Cedar Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Witchen and Rev. David Anderson officiating. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.

CHARLES A. WALKER
Charles A. Walker, age 82 of Maryville, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Maryville Church of Christ for 54 years and a retired Elder of the church. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific on the Destroyer USS Frank Knox. Mr. Walker served as a member of the Blount County Court from 1958-1962. He graduated from Friendsville High School in 1941 where he played on the State Championship Basketball team. He also pitched in the semi-professional baseball league. He graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1951 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After several years at Alcoa Aluminum Company, he purchased his own hardware store and enjoyed 37 years at Eagleton Hardware. Mr. Walker was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also hiked most of the trails in the Smoky Mountains. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Charles and Marjorie Walker; daughter, Eleanor Ann Walker; brothers, Lloyd, Bill and Mike Walker. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Roberta Willbanks Walker; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Claude Gardner of Maryville; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Bob and Beth Walker of Decatur, Alabama and Herb and Ruth Peck of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Ronnie Gardner, Jackie and Bill Hayward, Charlie, Mary Kyle and Claire Walker, Nathan and Stephanie Peck; great-grandchildren, Halie Gardner, Hannah Hayward and Tim Hamock; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Larry Kendall of Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, Garland and Lillian Walker of California; brother, Ethridge Walker of Arkansas; special friends, Charlie and Elaine Kennedy of Sherman, TX, Guy and Monty Arnold of Maryville; and a host of nieces, nephews and many other special friends. LORETTA SUE WUNDERLIN
Loretta Sue Wunderlin, 51 of Alcoa died Sunday, June 6, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Wunderlin. She is survived by her brother, Gary Carrigan; stepchildren, Kristel, Keara, Korey, Kasey; sister-in-law, Sharon Carrigan; nephew, Sean Carrigan; niece, Bernadette Doss. Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville with Rev. Billy Carrigan officiating. Entombment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

ANNIE SANDIFUR DAVIS
Annie Sandifur Davis, age 41 of Longmire Rd., Luttrell passed away at the St. Mary's Hospital, Saturday, June 5, 2004. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Bernard Goins; and her brother, Randy Sandifur. She is survived by her husband, Richard Davis; son, Matthew Covington; special nephew, Danny Covington; father and step-mother, Farris and Ruby Sandifur of Friendsville; step-father, Dante Goins of Luttrell; brother Bobby Sandifur of Blaine; sisters, Teresa Hurst of New Market, Sherri Sandifur of Rutledge, Tammy Burchell of Luttrell, Donna Jenkins of Knoxville, Stephanie Goins and daughter Sierra of Maryville; step-sisters, Robin Harriel of Maryville, Darlene Stanley of Missouri; step-brother, Dan Keaton of Madisonville; several nieces and nephews and by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marie and Mert Davis of Luttrell. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the McCarty Mortuary with the service to follow at 8 p.m. Rev. Mark Warrick and Rev. Roy Acuff will officiate. RHONDA E. JOHNSON
Rhonda E. Johnson, age 13 of Friendsville went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was a member of First Apostolic Church. She attended the Apostolic Christian Academy where she graduated from the 7th grade with highest honors as an 'A' Honor Roll student. Rhonda's interests and goals included a burden in her heart to sign for the deaf and to be a missionary in Africa. Rhonda received several trophies for her basketball playing skills; including one for Most Dedicated Player. Rhonda was lovingly known amongst her closest friends as RASTA. She enjoyed writing poems and short stories. Survivors include, parents, Ronald and Karen Johnson; brother, Ronald Johnson Jr. of Friendsville; sister, Stephanie Johnson of Maryville; sister and brother-in-law, Casondra and Daniel Toral Jr. of Roseville, MI; many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends; grandparents, Wilma Pennington, Sandra Morgan and Phillip Terry, Richard and Marge Chenevare. Funeral service will be at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the First Apostolic Church with Pastor Kenneth Carpenter officiating. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Grandview Cemetery. DAVID LEON LAWSON
David Leon Lawson, age 19, of Rockford, died Sunday morning, June 6, 2004. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bessie Lawson, James Jensen, and T Burchfield. Survivors: parents, Steve and Marie Lawson of Rockford; sister, Hope Lawson; and brother Steve Lawson, Jr. both of Rockford; grandmother, Polly Jensen of Friendsville; several aunts and uncles; one niece; special friend, Robert Keller; and girlfriend, Cassi Moore. Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Miller Funeral Home Cedar Chapel, Rev. Clarence Richardson and Rev. Carl McGill officiating. Family and friends will meet at Pleasant Hill cemetery at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004 for the interment service. Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.

JAMES H. LENOIR `BUBBIE' SR.
James H. Lenoir (Bubbie) Sr. of Rockford, TN was born July 2, 1926. He departed this life on Friday June 4, 2004 at Blount Memorial Hospital, Maryville, Tenn. James retired from ALCOA after 43 years of service. He was a honorary member of the 25-Year Club.
He was preceded in death by parents; and his son, James H. (Butchie) Lenoir, Jr.
Survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Rae Horton Lenoir; daughters, Judy A. Lenoir and her husband Monroe Fuller of Carson, Calif., LaVena C. Lenoir Simpkins, of Greenville, S.C.; eight grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorene Baker, Bettye (Robert) McGhee, Beulah (George) Giles; and one brother, John (Betty) Lenoir; several nieces and nephews.
James (Bubby) will be sincerely missed by devoted neighbors and friends, Rev. Stone Carr, Julius Kieth, Lloyd Coffin and Lewis Buchanon.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church in Alcoa with Elder Joe L. Colquitt officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Entombment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Alcoa. The remains may be viewed after noon on Tuesday at Foothills Funeral Home Maryville.

JAMES W. POLLARD
James W. Pollard, age 88 of Lenoir City, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2004 at his home. He was a member of Sixth Avenue Church of God. Jim retired from Hahn Construction Co. He was a member of Southern California/ San Diego Carpenters Union. A member of Friendsville Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Marie Pollard; brothers, Elmer Pollard and Dave Pollard; sister, Ora Bass. Survived by children, James R. Pollard and wife, Patricia of Eugene, Oregon, Bobby Pollard and wife, Frances of Maryville, Charlotte Scarbrough and husband, Leonard of Maryville, Billy Pollard and wife, Nancy of San Diego, Calif; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sixth Avenue Church of God. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Ernie Varner and Rev. A. J. Crawford officiating. CAROLYN ANN PRICE
Carolyn Ann Price, age 63, of Maryville, died Monday, June 7, 2004 at Blount Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Gregory and Carmen Price of Maryville, Frank Zachary and Cory Price of Walnut, Calif.; daughter, Leanna Price of Clearbrook, Va.; grandchildren, Alex, Thomas, Danielle, Matt, Tyler, and Carolyn Price; brothers, Fred and Lester Morris, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Betty Armstrong of Winchester, Va. and Paula Van Hyning of Asheville, N.C.

KENNETH E. RUSSELL
Kenneth E. Russell passed away Sunday June 6, 2004. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday June 10, 2004 at Beech Grove Baptist Church on Topside Road in Louisville with the Rev. Kenny Armstrong officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Beech Grove Baptist Church, and the Salvation Army.

NELLIE MARIE AMBURN BEST
Nellie Marie Amburn Best, age 89, loving mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away Friday afternoon, June 4, 2004, at Fairpark Nursing Center in Maryville. She was preceded in death by husband, Nathan A. Best; brothers, Joe, Earl, and Paul Amburn; sisters, Annie Ward, Aileen Jones, and Johnnie Mae Amburn. Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Frances Best of Lithonia, Georgia; Floyd and Wilma Best of Maryville. Grandchildren: Scott Best and wife Donna of Maryville, Tracie Best of Maryville, Kevin Best and wife Robin of Covington, Georgia. Five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was a member of Four Mile Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, in the Magnolia Chapel at Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Alvin Patton officiating. Friends and family will meet at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Grandview cemetery for the interment service. LUCILLE BOULDEN BIGGS
Lucille Boulden Biggs, age 95, of Maryville, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Colonial Hills Nursing Home. She was born February 22, 1909, in Danville, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late James Wilcher Bouldin and Emma Josephine Williamson Bouldin. She was married to the late Fred David Biggs and was a long-time member of Broadway Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Fred Biggs Jr. of Houston, Texas, and Richard Biggs of Knoxville; Daughters-in-law, Donna Biggs of Houston, Texas, and Tonie Biggs of Knoxville; grandchildren, Chuck, Sherry, Christine, Tere, Tracey and Rodney; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at Grandview cemetery on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m., led by Rev. L.G. Hutchens and Rev. Morgan Biggs. The memorial service will be at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home on Tuesday at 7 p.m., led by Dr. Robert Brown.

DR. JOHN HENRY BURKHART SR.
Dr. John Henry Burkhart Sr., born May 14, 1920, died suddenly June 3, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital. A member and Ruling Elder of Second Presbyterian Church, Dr. Burkhart practiced general medicine and family practice in Knoxville 1949-1994. He received his B.A. at the University of Tennessee, 1941, Doctor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee, 1945, served his rotating internship at Knoxville General Hospital, 1945-1946, and his Internal Medicine Residency there, 1948-1949. Dr. Burkhart served as president of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine, 1964, president of the Tennessee Medical Assoc., 1965, and served as delegate to the American Medical Assoc., 1967-1978; served on the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, 1978-1988, and as Chairman to the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs 1981-1983, 1987-1988. He received the Tennessee Academy of General Practice General Practitioner of the Year, 1964, Tennessee Medical Assoc. Distinguished Service Award, 1974, T.M.A. Outstanding Physician of the Year Award, 1984, Distinguished Alumnus Award, 1985, and Outstanding Alumnus Award, 1989, from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Alumni Assoc.; Knoxville Teacher's League 1964 School Bell Award, and the 1966 Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Education in 1966 from the Greater Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. He was the Northside Kiwanis Club's Layman of the Year in 1988, the East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Distinguished Service for Contribution to Community Amateur Athletics in 1990, the American Medical Assoc. 1991 Distinguished Service Award, and in December 1988, the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Building Auditorium was dedicated and re-designated the John Henry Burkhart, MD, Auditorium. Dr. Burkhart in 1963 founded the Student Education Fund of the Tennessee Medical Assoc., and served as its chair for many years. This fund has awarded $3.6 million in loans and scholarships in the last 41 years. He served on the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners 1974-1986 and chaired the board in 1978-1986. He was a member of Sons of the Revolution and First Families of Tennessee; Northside Kiwanis Club and Club President in 1959; member of the Admissions Committee, University of Tennessee College of Medicine 1981-1986; and president of University of Tennessee College of Medicine Alumni Assoc. and Alumni Council 1986-1988. Dr. Burkhart was Active Medical Staff, Knoxville General Hospital 1949-1957, the first Chief of the Department of General Practice at UT Medical Center in 1957, and Chief of Staff of St. Mary's Medical Center, 1965. He served on the Knoxville Board of Education 1958-1965 and served as chairman 1959-1965 during desegregation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred M. and Stella Henry Burkhart, and brother, Fred M. Burkhart Jr. He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Marjorie Blaylock Burkhart; sons and daughters-in-law, John M. Burkhart, MD, and Laura B. Powers, MD, of Knoxville, Patrick H. Burkhart, MD, and Fae Andrews Burkhart of Maryville, and William L. Burkhart, MD, and Jeannine Wadsworth Burkhart of Knoxville; grandchildren, Sarah, Thomas, William, Jessica, Matthew, James and John Burkhart. Following a private interment, there will be a service to celebrate the life of Dr. John H. Burkhart Sr. Saturday, June 12, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at Second Presbyterian Church with Dr. Arnold Lovell officiating. Members of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine will be honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Student Education Fund of the Tennessee Medical Assoc.
