A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Calvin J. and Geneva Moore Bowers. He was of the Methodist Faith and was a draftsman. Survivors include a sister, Roxanna Bowers, Landover, MD, a niece, Stefanie D. Bowers, Waldrolf, MD, a great-nephew, Dewayne C. LEONA R. MILAM Leona R. Milam, age 84, formerly of 12451 Hwy. 67 West, Butler died Monday, August 19, 2002 at Hermitage Health Center. A native of Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Gordie and Sally Stout Robinson. She was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and former employee of North American Rayon Corporation. She was preceded in death by her husband, George William “Bill” Milam, 7-22-94, 2 brothers, Winsel Robinson, Fred Robinson, 3 sisters, Winnie Peters, Eliza Wilson and Hazel Matherly. Survivors include, 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Kay and Glenn Shaw, Elizabethton, Jennie and Bobby Royston, Butler, Debbie Manuel, Butler, 1 step-son, Tony Milam, Butler, 1 step-daughter, Carolyn Morrison, Lake Wiley, SC, 1 sister, Mary Courtner, Butler, 10, grandchildren, 9, great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, and several nieces and nephews also survive. PAULINE WAYCASTER JONES Pauline Waycaster Jones, age 61, formerly of 406 Fork Mountain Road, Roan Mountain, died Sunday, August 18, 2002 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she is the daughter of Paul Waycaster, Morganton, NC, and the late Annie Markland Waycaster. She was a member of Roan Mountain Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a daughter Lealer Jones. Survivors in addition to her father include her husband, Milburn E. Jones, of the home, 3 daughters, Carolyn Ann Jones, of the home, Kathy Mayfield, and Mamie Mayfield, both of Morganton, NC, 3 sons, Willard D. Jones, Roan Mountain, Walter Lee Jones, David E. Jones, both of Winnsboro, TX, 3 sisters, Betty Eplan, and Jeraldine Arnett, both of Morganton, NC, Linda Woodell, Shelby, NC, 2 brothers, Roy Waycaster, Jerry Waycaster, both of Morganton, NC, 9 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, also survive. RUTH MOSLEY Ruth Mosley, age 88, 155 Jess Mosley Road, Roan Mountain, died Thursday, August 22, 2002 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of New Mexico, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Mary Johnson Morgan. She attended St. John’s Freewill Baptist Church and was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Mosley, Sept. 1979, one son, Robert Lee Mosley, 2 sisters, Irene Shell, Eva Jane Oxendine, one brother, Charlie Morgan. Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Loveta and Charles Becker, Baltimore, MD, Delores and Paul Gray, Roan Mountain, Wanda and Bloss Barnett, Roan Mountain, Brenda and Sidney Gilbert, Roan Mountain, 3 sons and 1 daughter-in-law, Eugene Mosley, Roan Mountain, Wayne Mosley, Roan Mountain, Sonny and Shirley Mosley, Roan Mountain, 39 grandchildren and great grandchildren, special niece and special nephew, Mary Ruth and Bobby Leonard, great nephew, Kelley Leonard. Rachel Virginia Lawson, 81, of Duffield, died Thursday (December 18, 2003) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Patton and Inze Bowen Adams.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Emitt Lawson and one son, James Lawson.
Surviving are: a daughter Mary Francis Seymour of Baltimore, MD; sons, Guy Adams of Duffield, Billy Lawson of Duffield, and James Lawson of Kingsport, TN; sisters, Opal Richards of Kingsport, TN, Beatrice Bradley of Knoxville, TN, Willie Hite of Church Hill, TN, and Betty Hall of Ohio; brothers, Elmer Adams of Duffield, and Ernest Adams of Duffield; two grandchildren, two great grandchildren.
Calling hours are Sunday evening 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village.
Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel, with James M. Baker officiating. The Mabe Quartet will provide the music. The Committal service will follow at the Bowen Cemetery.

Joe W. "Papa Joe" Robinson, 87, of Kingsport, formerly of Lee County, Va., passed away Monday (May 17, 2004) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a retired coach and school teacher in the Lee County School System and was a member of the Jonesville First United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army-Air Corps. Joe was a member of the Jonesville Lions Club, the Civitan Club and the Masonic Lodge.
In 1984, he was the National Runner-up for the High School Coach of the Year. In 1994, Joe was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Lee Minor and Senior League Baseball Leagues.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Morrison Robinson; one daughter, Rosalind Robinson; and his parents, James Harrison and Minnie Chadwell Robinson.
Surviving are his wife, Fern R. Robinson of Kingsport; one son, Michael S. Robinson of Abingdon, Va.; one daughter, Jan Vipperman of Chesterfield, Va.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillian Wilhoit of Collinsville, Ill.
Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Jonesville First United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the church with the Rev. Layne Pennington and the Rev. John Bardsley officiating.
Burial will follow in the Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Hershel R. Adams, 77, of Riverside, Ohio (formerly of Duffield, Virginia), passed away Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Spring Creek Nursing Center.
Mr. Adams retired from Chrysler Air Temp after 30 years of service and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.
Surviving are: his wife Betty Adams; sons, Chester R. Adams and wife, Emily Jean, Jimmie L. Adams, Robert M. Adams and wife, Lynn; daughter, Margaret Barnes and husband, Thomas; brothers, Hobart M. Adams, Sr., William Otis Adams, Curtis Adams, and Clifford Adams; sisters, Virgie Blair and Linda Sue Helton; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Calling hours are 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday (August 19, 2004) at The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village. Funeral Services will be conducted 8:00 p.m.. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Evangelist Garry Hood officiating. Music will be provided by Jonathan Adams and Nathan Trent. Committal services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Adams cemetery with Military Honors provided by American Legion Kingsport Post 3 and Gate City Post 265. Pallbearers will be Hobart Adams, Jr., Herman Adams, Jack Adams, John Adams, Eric Adams, and Glen Helton; honorary pallbearers will be Ray Adams, Patton Rhoton and Jack Bowen.

Robert Lee Horton, 44, of Jasper, died Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was a son of Jerry W. and Maggie Vaughn Horton and was a retired general contractor.
Surviving in addition to his parents are: brothers, Kenneth Ray and wife Loretta Horton of Natural Tunnel, and William Luther Horton of Jasper; several nieces and nephews and a host of cousins.
Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Red Hill Memorial Church in Pattonsville with Evangelist Garry Hood officiating.

J.D. Jones, 81, of Clinchport, died Monday morning (Dec. 6, 2004) at his residence.
Born in Scott County, he was a son of the late J.P. and Elizabeth Southers Jones. He was a veteran of the U.S Army, and was a retired construction worker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mae Jones and a son, Charlie Jones.
Surviving are his sons, Johnny Jones of Robinette Valley, Va., Gene Jones of Clinchport, Va., and Thomas Jones of Clinchport, Va.; daughters, Joann Stanley of Fairview, Va., Aleta Elizabeth Minton of Duffield, Va., and Barbara Mendenhall of Pattonsville, Va.; brother, Charles Jones of Castlewood, Va.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village or anytime at the home of Gene and Patricia Jones.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Sam Bowen officiating.
Music will be provided by Eddie Roberts and The Mabe Quartet.
Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mountain Home National cemetery in Johnson City, with military honors provided by Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post 3382 and assisted by the Color Guard of the Tennessee Army National Guard. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for procession to the cemetery.

Maye Myers Clendenen, 96, of Duffield, entered into rest Sunday morning (Feb. 13, 2005) at her residence with her family by her side.
Born in Pennington Gap, Va., she was a daughter of the late Adrian and Carrie Bailey Myers, a graduate of Emory & Henry College, and a member of Three Bells United Methodist Church in Duffield.
Maye retired after having taught 28 years with the Lee and Scott County Public School Systems. She was the treasurer of the United Methodist Women for many years, a member of Carter's Fort D.A.R. of Gate City, Daughters of the Confederacy, AARP of Big Stone Gap and Scott County Retired Teachers Association, of which she held many offices, including that of District O President.
She enjoyed taking cookies and distributing religious literature to friends at Ridgecrest Manor and worked as a volunteer in the Food Share Program.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Cecil Clendenen; son-in-law, Dave Gilbert; sisters, Edna Gilliam Briley and Alice Creech Rowlett.
Surviving are a son, Cecil H. Clendenen and wife, Sharon of Duffield; a daughter, Joyce Gilbert of Pennington Gap; grandsons, Guy Gilbert and wife, Lora of Pennington Gap and Greg Gilbert and wife, Dawn of Wise; granddaughters, Jaclyn Clendenen and husband, Steve Carver of Kingsport, Jennifer Fortner and husband Mark of Seymour, Tenn., Julie Potts and husband, Schaun of Kingsport; great-granddaughters, Kayla Gilbert, Jaden Potts and Madison Fortner; great-grandson, Jacob Fortner.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Marshall and Rev. Bob Horne officiating.
Committal services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View cemetery in Weber City. Those attending the committal service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. for procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers are Steve Carver, Mark Fortner, Schaun Potts, Guy Gilbert and Ronnie Blevins.
