TONI MARIE A. VESS Toni Marie A. Vess, age 44, 377 Buck Mountain Road, Roan Mountain died Saturday, February 21, 2004 at her residence following a brief illness. A native of Chicago, IL, she had lived in Roan Mountain most of her life. She is the daughter of Clayton L. and Patricia D. Troutman Young, Minneapolis, NC. She was a member of Roan Mountain United Methodist Church and a homemaker. Survivors in addition to her parents include her husband, Mark W. Vess, of the home, one son, Clayton Vess, of the home, one daughter, Mollie Vess, of the home, one sister, Delia Young, Minneapolis, NC, maternal grandfather, Roy Troutman, Roan Mountain. A memorial service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at Roan Mountain United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Morrison and Allen Hughes officiating. PEARL O. GRINDSTAFF Pearl O. Grindstaff, age 79, 2859 Garland Drive, Valdese, NC, formerly of Opossum Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, in the College Pines Nursing Center in Valdese, NC. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Eli and Lorina Myers Oliver. She attended the Valdese First Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Bowers, Annie Williams and five brothers, Cecil Oliver, Forney Oliver, Jess Oliver, Eugene Oliver, and Dan Oliver. Survivors include one son, Willard Grindstaff of Valdese, NC, three daughters and one son-in-law, Charlotte and Tim Chaney, Sherry Gail Grindstaff, all of Valdese, NC, Barbara Keller of Glen Alpine, NC, Seven grandchildren, Timothy Chaney and spouse, Stephanie of Lenoir, NC, Dennis Paul Hardin and spouse, Amanda, Lisa Gail Beach and spouse, Daniel, all of Morganton, NC, Heather Dawn Keller, Megan Star Keller, both of Glen Alpine, NC, Brandy Ann Chaney and Sibitha Joyce Chaney both of Valdese, NC, four great grandchildren, Nakota Hardin and Devin Connelly both of Morganton, NC, Sierra Diamond Chaney and Blain Chaney both of Lenoir, NC. Doyle E. Treadway, age 68 of 221 Swimming Pool Rd, Hampton, TN, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the VA Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Marshall, NC, Mr. Treadway was a son of the late Earlie and Flora Rogers Treadway. He attended Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Treadway served in the U. S. Army in the Vietnam War and received nine purple hearts, retiring with a rank of Staff Sgt./E6. In addition to his parents, Mr. Treadway was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Jack Treadway. Survivors are his wife, Bettie S. Oliver Treadway of the home, two daughters: Laverne Rush Treadway and Kathleen Treadway, one son: Earl Edward Treadway, two stepdaughters: Mildred Rodriguez, Elizabethton, and Elizabeth Godsey, Hampton, one stepson: Robert Oliver, Hampton, six step-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren, one sister and brother-in-law: Joann Treadway Roberts and Jimmy Roberts, Asheville, NC, two brothers and one sister-in-law: Paul Treadway, Hendersonville, NC and Lawrence and Rose Mary Treadway, Marshall, NC; several nieces and nephews, special friends, Phyllis & Harry Williams & Sally Sparks. NELSON MORGAN Nelson Morgan, age 83, 1893 Roaring Creek Road, Roan Mountain died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Rosencranse and Dovie Morgan. He was a member of Morgan Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Morgan was a retired school bus driver for Carter County School System, after 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reva Hughes Morgan, one sister, Shirley Jean Tipton and one brother, Albert Morgan. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Lloyd Potter, Roan Mountain, one granddaughter, Rebecca and spouse, Gary Wayne Honeycutt, Roan Mountain, one step granddaughter, Kathy and spouse, Dave Brown, Elizabethton, one step grandson, Julius “Peanut” Oaks, Elizabethton, eleven great grandchildren with special mention of Michael, Chris, Brandon and Samantha, four great great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Morgan Chapel Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Whitehead and Rev. Billy Morgan officiating. Music will be under the direction of Minia Street, pianist and ladies of the church. Interment will follow the funeral service at Capt. Nelson cemetery (Ripshin Community), Roan Mountain. She was a native of Carter County. She was a retired cook. Survivors include a daughter, Pat Showalter, Maurertown, VA; friends at Pine Ridge Care Center. Harry W. Hutchins, age 88, Hillview Health Center, formerly of 801 North Sycamore St., departed from his earthly home May 31, 2004. Graveside service of the Celebration of Life will be conducted at Happy Valley Memorial Park at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday June 2, 2004 with Dr. Don Marshall, Minister, officiating. Those wishing to go to the graveside services please meet at Tetrick Funeral Home at 1:30 P.M. to go in procession to Happy Valley Memorial Park. Harry was a native of Bland, VA and was the son of the late John R. and Rebecca Keeling Hutchins. His grandparents were the late William S. and Rhoda Harmon Hutchins and A. J. and Francis Keeling. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Milhorn Hutchins, a daughter, Brenda Hutchins Richardson, and a grandson, Tommy Richardson, five brothers, Ellis, Charles (Boo), William, Garnett and Bascom Hutchins, three sisters, Virginia (Jane) Hutchins, Margery Smith and Myrtle Campbell. Survivors are his wife Polly Morgan Hutchins, two sons and their wives, Randall and Carol Hutchins, Farrell and Sherry Hutchins, seven grandchildren, John Hutchins and wife Pam, Melanie Davis, Tammy Buchanan and husband Tim, Connie Shepard, Karen Barnett and husband Jon, Charlie and Jeff Hutchins; eleven great-grandchildren, Joshua and Michael Hutchins, Taylor and Jacob Davis, Maison and Madisson Barnett, Jordan and Ryan Buchanan, Eric and Gunner Shepard and Megan Hutchins, and two special faithful visitors, Jessica Lee and Leo Justin Yates. Luther W. Birchfield, age 78, of 124 Birchfield Lane, Elizabethton, TN, died Sunday, December 14, 2003 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charlie A. and Dora E. Hayes Birchfield. He was a member of the Elizabethton Church of Christ. Mr. Birchfield is preceded in death by Three sisters, Delia Clawson, Lethia Cable, and Evenell Ward; three brothers, Tom Birchfield, William “Pete” Birchfield, and Bill Birchfield. Survivors include one sister, Locky Gladys Birchfield, Elizabethton; and one brother, Charlie Ray Birchfield, Elizabethton; Several nieces and nephews also survive who were very special; and special friend, Howard Waters, Elizabethton. John A. Elrod, II, Ret. Major, U.S. Air Force, age 54, 807 Quail Ridge Court, Elizabethton died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at his residence unexpectedly. A native of Greenville, TN, he had lived in Elizabethton and Johnson City area for the last 12 years. He was the son of the late John A. Elrod, Sr., and Alice Jean Mauk Elrod. He attended Grace Fellowship Church. He currently served as R.O.T.C. instructor at Unicoi County High School, he also taught (Special Education) for 10 years at Daniel Boone High School, and he had his Tennessee Certification to teach Special Education, Geography, and History. Mr. Elrod was a retired Major from the U.S. Air Force, having served 20 years, during this time he attended Officer Training School, Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, Air War College. He was a U.S. Air Force Helicopter Pilot/Training, U.S. Air Force Fighter Pilot A-10/F-4, Instructor Pilot, Test Pilot, Standardization Officer, Chief Air Crew Training, Air Liaison Officer (Germany/U.S. Army), and Fighter Duty Officer, (Korea/U.S. Army) . He had a B.S. degree and a M.A. degree Education (Special Ed.) from East Tennessee State University, and a M.S. degree in Management from University of Arkansas. He also was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Survivors include his wife, Deborrah Curtis Elrod, of the home, two sons, Lt. JG. Johnathon W. Elrod, U.S. Navy, Oak Harbor, Washington, Jason Elrod, Johnson City, one brother and sister-in-law, David and Laura Elrod, Jonesboro, Ark., two nephews, George and John Elrod, one sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Charles Geiger, Orange, CA, one step-son and spouse, Curtis and Stephanie Armstrong, Elizabethton, one step granddaughter, Reagan Armstrong, Elizabethton. The graveside and interment will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Art Webb officiating. Charles Floyd Harrison Charles Floyd Harrison, age 81, 415 West F Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital, following an extended illness. He was born in Lake City, Florida and grew up in Abingdon, Virginia area. Mr. Harrison was the son of the late Robert Payton and Sidney West Harrison. He was preceded in death by four brothers; Louis, Bob, Nathan and Bruce Harrison and a sister, Carolyne Smith. Mr. Harrison was a member of First United Methodist Church for over fifty years, where he had served as usher for many years. He had also served as the treasurer of the Wesley Bible Sunday School Class. He was a retired sales representative and merchant. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 49 and the Disabled Veterans of America. Mr. Harrison was appointed as a Tennessee Colonel Aide De Camp to Gov. Ned McWherter. His hobbies were woodworking, crossword puzzles and the computer. Charles will be remembered for his big laugh, cheerful spirit and his delight in children. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Survivors include his wife, Eula White Harrison, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela H. Bashor and Dr. David Bashor; Charlotte, NC; one granddaughter and her husband, Melissa W. and Rick Marshall, Arlington, VA; one brother and sister-in-law: Sidney A. “Nick” and Jean Harrison, Cullman, AL; an honorary daughter, Dr. Tina Ram, Biloxi, MS; an honorary grand-daughter, Jennifer Morris, Georgetown, VA; numerous nieces and nephews and a very special friend, John Fields, of Elizabethton. A Funeral service for Mr. Harrison will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. - Saturday, April 24, 2004 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Brenda Pelham. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. CLYDE C. PHILLIPS Clyde C. Phillips, age 86, Asbury Center, Johnson City, formerly of 413 West C. Street, Elizabethton went home to be with Jesus, whom he loved and served for 60 years, on Friday, December 5, 2003 following an extended illness. A native of Yancey County, NC, he was the son of the late William Luther and Hannah Honeycutt Phillips. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church, Elizabethton where he served as Deacon and teacher for 50 years. He was a wonderful provider for his family. He was a retired mechanic from Inland Container. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by one brother, Troy Phillips, two sisters, Mae Matheson and Marjorie Bailey. Survivors include his wife, Viola D. Phillips, Asbury Center, Johnson City, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nancy Collins, Johnson City, Linda and Glen Wright, Memphis, TN, Janet and Norman Jamison, Indianapolis, IN, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one brother, Arville Phillips, Elizabethton, two sisters, Carolyn Brace, Knoxville, Shirley Batchelder, Elizabethton, several nieces and nephews also survive. A celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with the following grandchildren officiating, Tracy Moore, Philip Wright, Nancy Eastridge, Carol Horne, Roc Collins, Hannah Jamison and Jon Jamison. A native of Carter County, he is the son of Jerry Reed, Elizabethton and Irene Parlier Reed, of the home. He was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Reed was a retired construction worker. He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, Clinton Reed. Survivors in addition to his parents include one daughter, Cody Reed, Hampton, three sons, Casey Reed, Hampton, Rob Murphy, Kingsport, Dustin Ford, Johnson City, paternal grandmother, Eva Lee Reed, Jonesborough, two brothers, Michael Reed, Elizabethton, Eddie Reed, Elizabethton, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vickie and Larry Irick, Elizabethton, Penny and Don Livingston, Jonesborough, three nieces and three nephews and one great nephew, several Aunts, Uncles and cousins, a very special friend, Valerie Vines, Elizabethton also survive.
