LAURA TOLLEY CULBERT Laura Tolley Culbert, age 65, 101 Franklin Place, Unit #3, Elizabethton, died Monday, November 10, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Denny and Letta Canter Wagner. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Faith. She was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and two grandchildren, Polly Patterson and Johnny Constant Patterson. Survivors include her husband, Charles Culbert, Elizabethton, three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Cecil Huff, Wanda and Jimmy Clawson, Elizabeth and Rick Smith all of Elizabethton, one son, David Tolley, Elizabethton, three sisters, Loeva Booth, Elizabethton, Alice Johnson, Johnson City, Louise Johnson, Bristol, TN, one brother, Dennis Wagner, Nashville, TN, 11 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and loved one, Marvin Clawson, Jr., Elizabethton. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Gordon Wagner and Rev. Russell Potter officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Ben Johnson, Johnny Patterson and Howard Edwards Waters. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a..m. Friday, at Lyons Chapel Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Paul Tolley, Cecil Huff, Jimmy Clawson, Ronnie Kent, Marvin Clawson and Tim Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be George Booth, John Williams, Charlie Phillips, Edward Waters, Moose Mann, Gregg Mann, Danny Williams II, Jonathan Williams, Rick Smith and Tim Cole. Special thanks to a special person, Paul Tolley. Special Gratitude to the ICU Unit at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Steve, Dana, Dr. Brian Donovan and Dr. Vince Shaw. Horace A. Buckles, age 77, 110 Laura Bowers Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Lee & Callie Williams Buckles. Mr. Buckles was a member of Blue Springs Christian Church and retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 44 years of service. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Loretta Bowers, Wanda Bowers, & Lexie Lawson; two brothers, Lee Buckles & Cleveland Buckles; five half-sisters & three half-brothers. Survivors include: his wife, Roxie L. Buckles, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, James & Wanda Buckles, Elizabethton; two grandsons, Jason Buckles & Justin Buckles, both of Elizabethton; one brother, Floyd Buckles, Elizabethton; several nieces & nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M., Sunday, December 7th in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Richard Thomason, minister officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Blue Springs Men’s Quartet & Kathy Thomason, organist. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Monday in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Wade Woods, Roger Brown, Churchill Winston Hill, Fane Bowers, Mark Garrison & Ray Heaton. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Rominger, U.G. Luther J. Fair, age 85, formerly of 2300 Stateline Road, Elizabethton, and a resident of Ivy Hall for the past 8 years, died Friday, February 20, 2004, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Bristol, TN following a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Dave and Annie Hampton Fair. Mr. Fair was a Minister of the Church of Christ, and has served the following churches; Mountain View Church of Christ, Cherokee Church of Christ, in Johnson City, Rock Springs Church of Christ, and Stout Hill Church of Christ. He was a charter member of Centerview Church of Christ, and was the last living Trustee. Mr. Fair was a member of the Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM;, Elizabethton. He worked for 30 years at North American Rayon Corporation, and retired from the State of Tennessee, having worked at Herman Robinson Vocational Center. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Jarvis Fair and Clarence “Feeder” Fair; one sister, Mrs. Edith Pierce. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Rick Barr, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Margaret Fair, Rainsville, AL and Dick and Shelly Fair, Butler, TN; Five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Greene of Johnson City, Eulee Carden of Tampa, FL, and Helen James of Johnson City; four brothers, Hubert Fair of Elizabethton, Winfred Fair of Hampton, VA, L.D. Fair, and Milt Fair, both of Elizabethton. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, February 22, 2004 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, with Mr. David Irick, Minister, and Mr. Jim Palmer, Minister, officiating. Music will be provided by Centerview Church of Christ. The graveside service and interment will follow the service at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. Honorary pallbearers will be the owners and management of Ivy Hall Nursing Home. SHIRLEY JEAN DUGGER Shirley Jean Dugger, age 65, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Elk Park, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Enoch and Emma Rose Oakes Potter. She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.J. “Bob” Dugger, November 10, 1999, one daughter, Cynthia Dugger and two brothers, Jay Potter and Bill Potter. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jean and Sam Benfield, Newland, NC, Sandy and Ray Blair, Roan Mountain, Lisa Dugger, Roan Mountain, two sons and daughters-in-law, Lester and Julie Dugger, Roan Mountain, Bobby and Terri Dugger, Roan Mountain, eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Nyoka Bowers Reed Johnson, age 56, of 409 Old Highway 143, Roan Mountain, TN, died unexpectedly Saturday, December 27, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Mable Lewis Bowers. She was a member of Watauga Valley Freewill Baptist Church, and attended Sugar Hollow Freewill Baptist Church. She was employed by Life Care Center of Banner Elk, NC. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband Carrick Johnson, and sister Vada Overman. Survivors include: Three sons and one daughter-in-law, Tracy Reed, Casey Reed, and Robert and Esther Reed, all of Roan Mountain; seven grandchildren, Daniel Reed, Elizabethton, Caleb Reed, Elizabethton, Ella Reed, Roan Mountain, Kelsey Reed, Roan Mountain, Zachary Hughes, Elizabethton, Johnny Guy, Roan Mountain, and Leon Guy, Roan Mountain; two sisters, Lena Scalf, Elizabethton, Frances Guerry, Robstown, TX; three brothers, Millard Bowers, Elizabethton, Charles Stophel, Elizabethton, Sidney Bowers, Mobile, AL; special friend, Roger Morgan, Roan Mountain. DR. JAMES K. UMHOLTZ, JR. Dr. James K. Umholtz, Jr. age 81, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003. A native of Bristol, TN, he was raised in Elizabethton, TN. He was the son of the late J.Karl and Esther Gibson Umholtz. He was a Army veteran having served in World War II. During his career he worked as an Administrator in Overseas Dependent Schools, he was a professor at the University of Tampa and retired from the Florida Department of Education. Dr. Umholtz was a member of Tallahassee Heights United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, and was a member of Cookeville Masonic Lodge #266 F & A.M. Egypt Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies. Survivors include his wife, Betsey Gibson-Umholtz, a daughter, Margaret Susan Deprez, Sanford, FL, a granddaughter, Samantha Deprez and a cousin, Edith F. Smith, Charlotte, NC. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 15, at Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, TN, with Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. A native of Long Acre, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Bernie Cicero and Christina Abbott Gwaltney. She was a housewife and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Johnson City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Gwaltney, Franklin Gwaltney, and one sister, Bernice Preston. Jerry L. Stout, age 49, 143 Howard Lipford Dr., Elizabethton died Friday, April 2, 2004 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he is the son Marvella Johnson Williams, Elizabethton, and the late Robert Eugene Stout. He was a carpenter. Mr. Stout was a 1972 graduate of Elizabethton High School. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Stephanie Leann Stout, several aunts and uncles and step-father, Burt Johnson. Survivors in addition to his mother include his step-father, Jasper Williams, Elizabethton, two brothers, Ronnie Stout, Elizabethton, Michael Johnson, Bristol, TN, two aunts, Jan Kinzalow, Oxford, GA, Judy Ford, Elizabethton, two nieces and three nephews also survive. A special friend, Joe Shell, Elizabethton, a dear friend, Joan Avery, Elizabethton also survive. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Mark Grubb officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dale Williams. BERNICE DAVIS PRENDERGAST Bernice Davis Prendergast, age 95, 2003 Waters Edge Drive, Johnson City, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, in Wellington Place, Johnson City. A native of Niagara Falls, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Harry Benjamin and Bertha Pace Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Prendergast and a son, William D. Prendergast. Mrs. Prendergast was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and an educator, teaching school at T.A. Dugger Jr. High. She was also a member of DAR and Elizabethton Garden Club. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: James and Doris Prendergast, Hilton Head Island, SC; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry J. Davis, Oswego, NY; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Prendergast, Elizabethton. A Memorial service for Mrs. Prendergast will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 14, 2004, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, with Rev. Harold Bahlow officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M., Saturday, prior to the service at the church. Survivors include two brothers, Walter Roark, William E. Roark, both of Roan Mountain, two sisters, Emma Shell, Elizabethton, Ethel Heaton, Farmington, MI, special friends, Frank and Trish Presnell, Roan Mountain, several nieces and nephews also survive.
