MARIE REECE Marie Reece, age 64, 1700 W. Elk Ave., Elizabethton died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Peach Bottom, PA, she was the daughter of the late Walter Jones and Mary Caldwell Davis. She was a member of Church of God of Prophecy. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Blackwell and one brother, Gene Jones. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Jackie Reece, Elizabethton, one daughter, Lisa Reece, Elizabethton, life long companion, Bobby Reece, Elizabethton, one step-son and spouse, Earl and Norma Johnson, Elizabethton, three brothers and one sister-in-law, Charlie Jones, PA, David Jones, PA, Johnny and Sue Jones, TX, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Pastor Marvin Slagle officiating. Music will be under the direction of Pam Davis, soloist. Interment will follow the funeral service at Reece Cemetery, Butler. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Mrs. Willie Calhoun, age 77, 1266 Highway 143, Roan Mountain, TN, died Monday, November 3, 2003 at the Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Bill & Bessie Honeycutt Hughes. Mrs. Calhoun was a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church, Roan Mountain and was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Reynard Calhoun, of the home; one sister, Mable Troutman, Roan Mountain; one great niece and spouse, Kathy & Johnny Ledford, Roan Mountain; two great great nieces and spouse, Melinda & Dean Fields, Jessica Ledford, all of Roan Mountain; two great great great nieces, Kaylen Fields & Karah Fields, both of Roan Mountain; one nephew, Bill Hughes, Deland FL; four special friends, Nickie Strickland & Joanna Miller, both of Roan Mountain; Clara Heaton, Elizabethton; Helen Guinn, Elk Park, NC; several other nieces & nephews also survive. JAMES MILTON CHANEY James Milton Chaney, age 63, 112 Messimer Lane, Elizabethton died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Clinton, SC, he was the son of the late Samuel Carl and Bernice E. Owenby Chaney. He was a member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the choir and as Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was retired from Federal Aviation Agency as a Air Traffic Control Specialist. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran. He was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Carl Chaney, Jr., several aunts, uncles, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Pierce and Kate Hughes. J.R. “R.J.” SHELL J.R. “R.J.” Shell, age 58, 250 Honeycutt Road, Roan Mountain, died Friday, December 5, 2003, in Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville, TN, following an extended illness. A native of Banner Elk, NC, he was the son of the late Ford and Flossie Twiggs Shell. He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Gladys Shell. Mr. Shell was a member of Crabtree Free Will Baptist Church, and attended Sunset Free Will Baptist church. He was a machinist at the Alemite Company, Johnson City. Survivors include his wife, Mary Carolyn Shell, of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law: Virginia Mae Shell, of the home and Sarah Elizabeth and Johnathan Simerly, Roan Mountain; two brothers: Leon Shell and Dillard Shell, both of Roan Mountain; one sister, Cathy Stevens, Roan Mountain; several nieces and nephews also survive. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Ashe, NC, but attended Pleasant View Christian Church, Neva, TN. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Hughes Davis and Carrie Hughes McLamb, two brothers, Thomas Allen Hughes, Dexter Woodring Hughes and one grandson, Kenneth “Cephy” Davis. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late George Issac and Elizabeth Bowers Morrell. She was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 50 years of service as a inspector. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Love Taylor, a son, Robert Laddie Taylor and 22 brothers and sisters. Survivors include one sister, Marie Senter, Elizabethton, one grandson and spouse, Robert “Corky” and Doanie Taylor, Elizabethton, two great grandchildren, Benjamin Taylor, and Jeremy Taylor, both of Elizabethton, several nieces and nephews also survive. OBITUARY: GEORGE E. HAZELWOOD George E. Hazelwood, age 71, 119 Oscar Johnson Road, Hampton, died Sunday, November 9, 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Rose Ellen Hazelwood. He was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. Mr. Hazelwood was a retired employee of the Tennessee Highway Department as a supervisor in the surveying department. He was also a professional musician, he had preformed at the Grand Ole Opry with Carl Story and the Rambling Mountaineers and with Raymond Fairchild and The Maggie Valley Boys. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Hazelwood, September 2002, and two sisters, Ressie Lewis and Mary Potter. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Jerry Keys, Jonesborough, a son and daughter-in-law, Bud and Sandy Hazelwood, Elizabethton, four grandchildren, Jeramie Keys, Esq., and spouse Christy Keys, Atlanta, GA, Ashley Keys, Jonesborough, Megan Hazelwood, Brody Hazelwood, both of Elizabethton, one sister, Mildred Montgomery, Hampton, several nieces and nephews also survive. Jerry "Paw" Howard Hayes, Sr.

Jerry “Paw” Howard Hayes, Sr., age 61, 138 Crockett Lane, Elizabethton, was called home to be with his Lord on Friday, February 13, 2004, in the University Community Hospital, Tampa, FL. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Johnny Howard and Una Evelyn Stoler Hayes. He was baptized at an early age in the Stoney Creek River near the place that he was born. Mr. Hayes was owner and operator of Hayes Contractors. He served in the U S Army National Guard. Mr. Hayes was an active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon for many years and volunteered on various mission trips. He was treasurer and president of the Jr. Babe Ruth Baseball League and was very active in the Stoney Creek Youth Club where he coached on each of his son’s teams and the Pop Warner Football League. Mr. Hayes gave his all to serve the youth of Carter County, from tee ball to the Jr. Babe Ruth League. He was an avid NASCAR fan and “driver”. He enjoyed camping and running. Mr. Hayes was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He loved his family and loved life. He was always there for everyone who knew him by putting other people’s needs before himself. He witnessed for the Lord through the way he served his family, friends and anyone that needed help. He served his Lord daily through living. No task, no problem, Jerry could always solve what needed to be done and lived by the belief that you do what you have to do and ask for God’s help. He stood up for what he believed to be right. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, J.O. & Cassie Hayes. Survivors include his loving wife of 39 ˝ years, Molly Marie Clark Hayes, of the home; he was the devoted father of two sons : Jerry & Tracy Hayes, Jr., Jimmy Hayes & Heather Smith, one daughter, Joey Marie “Puff” Hayes & special friend, Mickey Hunsinger, a brother & sister-in-law, Wayne & Ann Hayes, two sisters & one brother-in-law, Carol Hayes and Sharon & Robert Blevins, two granddaughters: Savannah and Sydney Hayes, a special sister-in-law, Margie Gouge, sister-in-law, Frances Hixson, all of Elizabethton;a brother-in-law, B. ROGER “KEITH” ADCOCK Roger “Keith” Adcock, age 78, 620 Johnson Ave., Elizabethton died Monday, November 10, 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of McAdenville (Gaston County), NC, he had lived in Elizabethton for the last 15 years. He was the son of the late James Boyd Adcock, Sr. and Pearl Johnston Adcock. Mr. Adcock was a member of Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Dillard Paper Company for 10 years. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, having retired after 20 years of service and served in World War II and Vietnam. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Boyd Adcock, Jr., and a step-son, Rick Colbaugh. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Williams, Adcock, of the home, one son and daughter-in-law, Roger M. and Susie Adcock, Gastonia, NC, one brother and sister-in-law, Donald E. and Edith Adcock, Belmont, NC, one sister and brother-in-law, Gloria Dean and Kenneth Metz, Cramerton, NC, one sister-in-law, Viola Adcock, Charlotte, NC, one granddaughter and spouse, Shelia and Tony Swaney, Pendleton, SC, one stepson, John Colbaugh, Elizabethton, one stepdaughter and spouse, Julie and Matt Thornton, Elizabethton, five step grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. The committal and entombment service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2003 at the Mausoleum Chapel of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ethel Davidson. Full military honors will be accorded by The Honor Guard from Shaw Air Force Base, Charleston, SC. Honorary pallbearers will be Sonny Murray, Bill Young, Earl Dykes, Bud Gobble, Men of Keystone Free Will Baptist Church and Mary Alice and Jack Ketron. Those who plan to attend the committal and entombment service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. on Thursday. 9Friends may call at Tetrick Funeral Home at their convenience between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, or friends may call at the residence 620 Johnson Ave., Elizabethton anytime.
