Edward Dale Perry, age 76, 177 Bart Green Drive, Gray, formerly of Roan Mountain, died Sunday September 14, 2003 at his residence following a brief illness. He was a native of Carter County, and a son of the late Arthur Mac and Myrtle Lenna Jestes Perry. Mr. Perry was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a retired Vocational Principal and teacher at Happy Valley High School. He taught in the Carter County School System for 42 years. He was a 30 year member and former Sunday school teacher at Grays Chapel Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army/ Air Force having served in WWII. Mr. Perry was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Ruth Perry; four brothers, Roger Perry, Hyder Perry, Linville Perry, and Lane Perry. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Buchanan, Johnson City, and Judy and Drew Hardin, Knoxville, Tn., one granddaughter, Celesta Buchanan, Ann Arbor, Michigan; one grandson, Garth Fine, Johnson City; one brother, Astor Perry, Raleigh, North Carolina, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Edward Dale Perry will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 16, 2003, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home. The Committal and Entombment service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers are Garth Fine, Wayne Decker, F.D. Singleton, Tom Burleson, Ron Anderson, Bob Burleson, Edwin Decker, Bill Watson, Durward Julian, and Ray Greer. Those who plan to attend the committal service are requested to meet at the cemetery at 9:55 A.M. Wednesday. The family will receive friends in the chapel of the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday. Friends may also call at the residence of a daughter, Linda Buchanan at any time.

William C. “Tommy” Hartsook William C. “Tommy” Hartsook, age 72, 340 Lovers Lane, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly Friday, September 19, 2003, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Sullivan County, he was the son of the late John C. and Rowena Hyatt Hartsook. Mr. Hartsook was of the Holiness faith and a former employee of Elizabethton Herb and Metal. Survivors include his wife, Roberta Gentry Hartsook, of the home; one son, William C. Hartsook, Jr., Elizabethton; one sister, Ollie King, Kingsport; one brother, Frank Hartsook, Bluff City; Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. The Memorial Service for Mr. Hartsook will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, September 25, 2003 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, with Rev. Doug Wagner officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M., Thursday, prior to the service. Private disposition will be conducted at a later date. NORA ANN ASHLEY NORA ANN ASHLEY, age 49, 130 Ben Ashley Lane, Roan Mountain, died Friday, July 4, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Edith Hughes McMahan. She was preceded in death by a brother, terry McMahan. Mrs. Ashley was a dietitian at the Roan Highland Nursing Home and a member of Roan Park Baptist Church. SURVIVORS include her husband, Charles Ashley, of the home; two daughters: Kindel Ashley and Shannon Ashley, both of Roan Mountain; two granddaughters: Madison Ashley and Ashley Trammel, both of Roan Mountain; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Lena and Wally Hitechew, Roan Mountain and Connie McMahan, Elizabethton; two brothers and sisters-in-law: C.W. and Ann McMahan, Roan Mountain and Eddie and Penny McMahan, Elizabethton; special niece: Melissa Nicholes, Elizabethton; several other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service for Nora Ann Ashley, age 49, 130 Ben Ashley Lane, Roan Mountain, who died Friday, will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Monday, July 7th, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev. A native of Kansas City, KS, he was the son of the late James Garfield and Georgia Freeman McKinney, and his biological mother, Sue Thompson, Kingsport. Mr. McKinney was a member of Morgan’s Branch Free Will Baptist Church and a LP Service Technician with Freeman Gas Co., Boone, NC. SURVIVORS in addition to his biological mother, are his wife, Susan L. McKinney, of the home; three brothers: Clarence McKinney, Boone, NC, Dale McKinney and Ralph McKinney, both of Roan Mountain; two sisters: Jessie Shell, Fairway, KS and Elizabeth Dailey, Savannah, GA; two special nephews: Timmy Ingram, Roan Mountain and William Lambert, Banner Elk, NC; other nephews and special nieces also survive. MARY FRANCES GILLESPIE Mary Frances Gillespie, age 68, 819 Watauga Ave., Elizabethton died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Life Care Center Elizabethton following an extended illness. A native of Wise County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Shannon Richmond, Sr., and Helen Phillips Richmond. She was a member of Phillippi Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Snap On Tools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Gillespie, 1980 and one brother, Harold “Sonny” Richmond. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Nathaniel Watson Sr., and Tillie Watson, of Elizabethton, one stepson, Alfonzo Gillespie, Johnson City, one stepdaughter, Marcella Pace, Johnson City, 6 sisters, Bernice Myrick, Pauline Neeley, Margaret Hagler, Betty Jean McFarland, Joan Avery all of Elizabethton, Hildred Davis, New Platz, NY, 3 brothers, Shannon Richmond, Jr., Richard Richmond, George Richmond, all of Elizabethton, 8 grandchildren, several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. REBA B. SLAGLE Reba B. Slagle age 87, formerly of 422 West E. Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Hillview Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Washington County and had lived in Carter County most of her life. Mrs. Slagle was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John E. Keys. She was a member of First Baptist Church Elizabethton. She was a homemaker and former President of Elizabethton High School Band Booster’s. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. H.M. Slagle, Jr., March 10, 1989, one brother, John P. Keys and one sister, Elizabeth Lyon. Survivors include, one daughter and son-in-law, Shirlene and Terry Sams, North Augusta, SC, one son, H.M. (Buddy) Slagle, III, Elizabethton, seven grandchildren, Terissa Crites, North Augusta, SC, Terry Sams, Jr., Elizabethton, Patrice Crapps, Elizabethton, Fridie Jackson, Cookeville, TN, Earl Slagle, Elizabethton, Kate Bryant, North Augusta, SC, Becky Hutchins, Erwin, TN, 16 great grandchildren, and one niece, Judy John Jones, Johnson City also survive. The graveside service for Reba B. Slagle, age 87, formerly of 422 West E. Street, Elizabethton, who died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Mausoleum of Peace Chapel at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Elmer Sams, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow the graveside service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Earl Slagle, Terry Sams, Jr., Buddy Crites, Robert Bryant, Kenny Crapps and Anthony Hutchins. VERNIE HOLTSCLAW HUGHES VERNIE HOLTSCLAW HUGHES, age 95, 416 Cove Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at her residence, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Weaver and Ethel Johnson Holtsclaw. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Hughes, a son, Ralph Hughes, several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church. SURVIVORS include four grandchildren: Rocky Hughes, Randall Hughes, both of Elizabethton, Richard Hughes and spouse, Maradell Hughes, Roan Mountain, who were her caregivers, and Ruth Smith, Newland, NC; four great-grandchildren: Corey Hughes, Alex Hughes and Josh Hughes, all of Elizabethton and Desiray Smith, Newland, NC; three sisters: Beulah Hughes, Onzie Johnson and Rena Lee Whitehead, all of Roan Mountain; one brother: Carmel Holsclaw, Roan Mountain; several nieces and nephews also survive. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Maude Elliott Miller. She was a member of One Way Baptist Church, Johnson City. Mrs. Garland was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Garland. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and V.W. Odom, Newland, NC, three grandchildren, Anna Rhea, Johnson City, Michael Smith, Cranberry, NC, Melissa Nelson, Erwin, one special nephew, Tony Shell, Crossnore, NC, one great grandson, Preston Rhea, Johnson City also survives. JOHN HENRY WATERS, SR. John Henry Waters, Sr., age 68, 113 Weaver Hollow Road, Johnson City, died Monday, September 8, 2003 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Washington County, he was the son of the late Clay Howard and Amanda Price Waters. He was of the Holiness faith. Mr. Waters was a master carpenter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jess Waters and James Waters, a sister Alice, a granddaughter, Melinda Sue Bryant. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary Waters, of the home, 5 daughters and 4 sons-in-law, Nancy Waters, Johnson City, Joan Waters Bryant and Marvin, Morristown, TN, Judy Waters Henson and Robert, Rocky Mount, NC, Jesse Margaret Waters Phipps and Calvin, St. Leonard, MD, Tammy Elizabeth Waters Arnold and Donald, Prince Frederick, MD, two sons, John Henry Waters, Jr., Sharpsburg, NC, James Clay Waters, Cleveland, OH, grandchildren, Melissa Ann Pierce and spouse, Wayne, of Rocky Mount, NC, Frances Lissette Kaucher and spouse, Samuel, of Elgin Texas, Mary Amanda Louise Toder and finance, Christopher Willis of Morristown, TN, Donald James Arnold, III, Prince Frederick, MD, Jonathan Curtis Waters of Sharpsburg, NC, Joy and Chole Waters, Cleveland, OH, Tanner Bryant (Buddy) of Morristown, TN, two great grandchildren, Cordell Kaucher, Elgin, TX, Tye Joseph Toder, Morristown, TN, four sisters, Katheryn, Robin, Marty, Leslie, several nieces and nephews , a special nephew, James Simmons, two special nieces, Becky Waters and Sandra Kay, also survive. LEONARD MICHAEL (MIKE) GARRISON Leonard Michael (Mike) Garrison, age 52, 16032 Blyler Road, Jacksonville, FL, died Monday, October 6, 2003 in Jacksonville Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Roan Mountain, he is the son of Leonard and Violet (Bobbie) Garrison, Roan Mountain, TN. He was a member of the Steamfitters Local in Jacksonville, FL and also a former member of Steamfitter Local 538 in Johnson City, TN. He was preceded in death by a son, Brandon Garrison. Survivors in addition to his parents, include his wife, Pamela Garrison, of the home, two step daughters, Jody Marchant, Linsy Adams, three step grandchildren, one brother, Samuel Ray Garrison, Roan Mountain, two special nephews, Denny Garrison, and Samuel Lee Garrison, several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. A graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 11, at Lower Garrison Cemetery, Roan Mountain with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sherry Freeman. Active pallbearers will be selected by the family. Honorary pallbearers will be all his friends and fellow members of the Steamfitters Local and a special friend, Jeremy. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, at Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain.
