Thomas Irick, age 40, of 127 Dan Cole Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on 19-E Roan Mountain. He was a native of Eugene, Oregon, but has lived in Elizabethton since 1969. Mr. Irick was the son of Merle Church Irick, Elizabethton, and the late Jack Irick. He was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Irick was a Brick and Stone Mason. Survivors in addition to his mother include: his wife, Nadine Fitch Irick, of the home; son, Josh Irick, Elizabethton; step-son, Jason Hobbs, Elizabethton; step- daughter, Jennifer Hobbs, Johnson City; four grandchildren; 2 Brothers, Jeff Irick, Knoxville, TN and Larry Irick, Virginia; Sister, Lynn Shryock, Elizabethton; Several Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces, and Nephews also survive. REV. CLARENCE F. “DICK” STANFIELD Rev. Clarence F. “Dick” Stanfield, age 82, of Chinquapin Grove, Bluff City went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at his home after a brief illness. A Sullivan County native, he was the son of the late Fletcher and Mattie Lyons Stanfield and was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Rev. Stanfield had been a Baptist minister for 39 years and had pastored churches in North Carolina and Tennessee. He had been the pastor of Harbor Light Baptist Church of Johnson City for almost 29 years. Rev. Stanfield was the speaker on a local radio broadcst, “Bible Time” on WJCW for more that 20 years. He was also employed by Jellico Grocery Company as a salesman for 30 years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. Rev. Stanfield is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Alice Stanfield, of the home, a son, Stephen Stanfield, and wife, Judy of Bluff City, a daughter, Janet Overbay of Bluff City and two grandchildren, Joshua Overbay and Jessica Overbay both of Bluff City, and a host of church family and friends also survive. The funeral service for Rev. Clarence F. “Dick” Stanfield, age 82, of Chinquapin Grove, Bluff City who went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 22, 2003 will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at Harbor Light Baptist Church, Johnson City with Rev. Jeff Griffith and Rev. Roger Henson officiating. Music will be under the direction of The Roger Henson Family and David Montgomery. Interment will follow the funeral service at Sunrise Cemetery, Bluff City. Active pallbearers will be Larry Miller, Tom Orton, George Cole, Patrick Mink, Gary Deloach and David Montgomery. ANITA TAYLOR ANITA TAYLOR, 88, formerly of 502 West Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, in the Life Care Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness. She was a native of Carter County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Taylor and a son, Dallas Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a retired LPN from Carter County Memorial Hospital. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Nell Taylor, Mt. RICKY WHITEHEAD II Ricky Whitehead II, age 18, 1028 Old Railroad Grade Road, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native of Roan Mountain, he is the son of Rick and Robin Whitehead, Roan Mountain. He attended Sunset Free Will Baptist Church and Little Mountain Baptist Church. He was an employee of Starr Building System of Elizabethton. He was a 2002 graduate of Cloudland High School, where he was an all-star basketball player. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Robert (Bud) Mosley, great grandparents, Joe Whitehead, Wayne Goodwin, Arthur and Lena Markland, Jess and Ruth Mosley. OPHELIA BURLESON Ophelia Burleson, age 95, 725 Watauga Ave., Elizabethton, died Friday, May 16, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Maggie Taylor Bowers. She was a member of Brown’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Mrs. Burleson was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Burleson, 2 sisters, Hazel Horton, Aliene McQueen, 2 brothers, George Bowers, Claude Raymond Bowers, and one sister-in-law, Josephine Bowers. Survivors include 1 brother, Harold Bowers, Rogersville, 2 sisters-in-law, Norma Jean Bowers, Rogersville, Mary Bell Bowers, Rogersville, several nieces and nephews also survive. A native of Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Worley & Buena Scott Snodgrass. Mrs. Williams was a member of East River Park Christian Church and a member of the Rainbow Sunday School Class and the Love Circle. She retired from Food Lion. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by several brothers & a sister. Survivors include two sons & daughters-in-law, Paul A. & Debra Williams, Jr., Hampton; Wayne & Sherry Williams, Piney Flats; one daughter & son-in-law, Lois Carrier & David Maurice, Greeneville; one brother, Harry O. He was a retired employee of Mapes Piano String Company after thirty-eight years of service as a Quality Control Inspector. DEBORAH KEYLON PALAGYI Deborah Keylon Palagyi, age 43, 409 Brandon Street, Apt. D, Elizabethton died Saturday, March 15, 2003 unexpectedly at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Randall Keylon, Elizabethton, and the late Gary Willis Keylon. She was a member of Rowland Springs Baptist Church, Cartersville, GA. She was a 1978 graduate of Elizabethton High School and a 1981 graduate from Steed College in Fashion Merchandising. She also held a real estate license in Tennessee and Florida. Mrs. Palagyi was a published poet and a former member of the Cumberland County Playhouse. Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Brian J. Palagyi, of the home, a step-daughter, Jeanna Palagyi, Cold Springs, KY, two brothers, Mark Jason Keylon, and David Wayne Keylon both of Elizabethton, maternal grandmother, Trudie Vera Randall of Elizabethton, two special aunts, Ruth Cooper, Elizabethton, Karen Randall, Crossville, TN, two uncles, Charlie Randall, Crossville, TN, Dan Wesley Kyelon, Greenville, SC, several nieces and nephews also survive. She was a native of Washington County and a former resident of Central Community & Buck Mountain. Mrs. Owens had lived in Hermitage since 1990. She was the daughter of the late James & Sarah Cole Woody. Mrs. Owens was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her husband, Troy T. DeFort Owens (1979); a daughter, Gwen Breeze; a brother, James Albert Woody.
