CHARLES EUGENE PIFER, RET. U.S. NAVY COMMANDER Charles Eugene Pifer, Ret. U.S. Navy Commander, age 75, 502 First Ave., Hampton, died Friday, May 9, 2003 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Fairmont, WVA, he was the son of the late Charles and Ruth Kepner Brown Pifer. He was of the Presbyterian Faith. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran having proudly served 33 years, he also served on the USS Enterprise as a aviator. He was a graduate of Royal Military Academy, Front Royal, VA, a graduate of West Virginia University and a graduate of Naval Post-Graduate School, Monterey, CA. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Norah Simpson Pifer, of the home, a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Dr. Charles Hughes, Pensacola, FL, 4 grandchildren, Will Hughes, Sam Hughes, Amanda Hughes and Rachel Hughes all of Pensacola, FL, 1 uncle, Duwane Kepner, Hambledon, WVA also survive. The gravside service for Charles Eugene Pifer, Ret. U.S. Navy Commander, age 75, 502 First Ave., Hampton who died Friday, May 9, 2003 will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Mountain Home National cemetery with a U.S. Navy Chaplin officiating. Music will be under the direction of Bryan Combs, Bagpiper. Full military honors to be accorded by U.S. Naval Honor Guard. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery. WILLIAM E. “BILL” DAVIS WILLIAM E. “BILL” DAVIS, age 88, 400 N. Boone Street, Asbury Center, Johnson City, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in the Northside Hospital, following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, TN, he was the son of the late Ruben B. and Cora Conley Davis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Mae Davis; three sisters: Leida Nidiffer, Maggie Davis and Mamie Davis; two brothers, Charles Davis and Lonnie Davis. Mr. Davis was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ. He was a former employer of Hart Industrial Supply and PPG. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in World War II. Survivors include a brother, Ralph Davis, Johnson City; six sisters: Lucille Bales, Bernice Davis, Hildred Davis, Lola Ensor, Jean Carpenter and Ruby Hughes, all of Elizabethton. RALPH PERRY, JR. Ralph Perry, Jr., age 81, 424 East “H” Street, Elizabethton died Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Ralph Perry, Sr., and the late Phoebe Crosswhite Perry Derthick. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton, and former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Elizabethton. He was a retired Transportation Coordinator from First Tennessee Human Resource Agency, he was also a retired employee of Magnavox of Morristown. Mr. Perry was co-founder of Ivy Hall Nursing Home and was a former Captain of Elizabethton Police Department. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post #49, and a member of Capt. Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166. He was preceded in death by a sister Charlotte Beaver. Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hunt Perry, of the home, 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Lee Perry and his finance’ Cindy Martin, both of Elizabethton, Robert and Beth Perry, Elizabethton, John Michael and Sherri Perry, Charlottesville, VA, 4 granddaughters, Kelly Toncray and spouse, Chip, Elizabethton, Katie Sheets and spouse, Jason, Johnson City, Jennifer Perry, Charlottesville, VA, Autumn Perry, Elizabethton, 2 grandsons, Camron Perry, Charlottesville, VA, Wolfgang Perry, Elizabethton, 1 great granddaughter, Aubrey Chase Toncray, Elizabethton, several nieces and nephews also survive. STANLEY RAY ROBERSON Stanley Ray Roberson, age 54, 138 Howard Lipford Drive, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital following a battle with cancer. A native of Carter County, he was the son of Irene Ayers Roberson, of the home, and the late Walter Paul Roberson. Mr. Roberson was of the Baptist faith and was a retired employee of J.A. Street Construction Company. He was a 1967 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Mr. Lipford was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam. Survivors in addition to his mother include a son, Neil “Tommy” Roberson, Gray, 1 sister, Roseanna Lowe, Elizabethton, 1 brother, Gary P. Roberson, Elizabethton, a niece, Donna Kaye Gobble, Elizabethton, several cousins, special friends, Don Deas, Ed and Tina Hadden, and Lonnie Lowe also survive. HAZEL C. WILLIAMS, age 85, 229 Blue Springs Road, Elizabethton, TN, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the home of a son, Estel F. Williams, 238 Allison Road, Piney Flats, TN following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Percy and Lula Smith Campbell. Mrs. Williams was a member of Hunter United Methodist Church and attended Valley Forge United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estel Fonce Williams, October 13, 2001, two infant sons and five brothers. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry P. and Carol Williams of Elizabethton and Estel F. and Patty Williams of Piney Flats; six grandchildren and their spouses, Deborah and Mark Allen of Smithville, VA, Jeffrey and Julie Williams of Houston, TX, Benjamin and Heather Williams of Monticello, AR, Estel Williams III, Mallorie Williams and Haley Williams all of Piney Flats; three great-grandchildren, Nickolas and Christopher Allen of Smithville, VA and Abigail Williams of Monticello, AR; and a brother, Leonard Campbell of Elizabethton. JOSEPH DANIEL “FROG” CAMPBELL Joseph Daniel “Frog” Campbell, age 19, 166 Flora Dugger Road, Elizabethton died Saturday, March 8, 2003. He was a native of Carter County, and was the son of Sherry Bowers Campbell, Elizabethton and Joe Campbell, Elizabethton. He was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church and former employee of Simpson Construction. He was a 2001 graduate of Unaka High School, where he was a member of the Unaka High School Football team for four years. He was also a #1 fan of Dale Earnhart, Jr. He was preceded in death by two very special friends, Matt Bullard and Brandon Asher. A native of Bristol, VA, she was the daughter of the late Abe and Mildred Mabe Bolling. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church and was retired after 20 years of service from K-Mart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip C. Jones, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, and 1 granddaughter. Survivors include, 2 sons, Philip A. Jones, Bluff City, James E. Jones, Fort Bragg, NC, 5 grandchildren, 1 brother, Jerry Bolling, Raleigh, NC, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Marie B. EVA MAE MOORE Eva Mae Moore, age 88, formerly of 1101 East State Street, Geneva, IL, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness. A native of Iron River, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of the late John and Hannah Rasmussen Athey. Mrs. Moore was a member of Rockford First Church of the Nazarene where she was a teenage and adult Sunday School teacher and served on the Missionary Committee. She was a retired punch press operator with National Lock Co. in Rockford, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Moore; three brothers, Harold Athey, Neil Athey, and James Athey; and two sisters, Flora Rehm and Roberta Wendlund. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Mary Moore of Elizabethton; two daughters, Gloria McClain of Bryan, TX and Shirley Rouse of Ocala, FL; several grandchildren, including two grandsons and their spouses, David and Stephanie Moore of Highland, WI and Dan and Melanie Moore of Elizabethton; several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Athey of Harper Woods, MI. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be conducted at Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Rockford, IL. Tetrick Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

A native of Roda, VA, he was the son of the late Oscar and Bessie Cooper Sturgill. He was a retired brick mason. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Sturgill. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Jean Rutherford Sturgill, of the home, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Cindy Sturgill, Elizabethton, Mark and Jenni Sturgill, Elizabethton, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Mike Grindstaff, Elizabethton, Sandi and Paul Waters, Elizabethton, 5 sisters, 3 brothers, 9 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Richard Collins, Elizabethton, also survive. BEECHER HOLTSCLAW BEECHER HOLTSCLAW, age 95, 136 Holtsclaw Road, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in the Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late James and Polly Julian Holtsclaw. Mr. Holtsclaw spent most of his life working in the timber industry. He was a member of the Free Holiness Movement, preaching the message of Christ most of his adult life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-three years, Edith Barnett Holtsclaw, in 2000; a son, Cecil E. Holtsclaw; three brothers, Will Holtsclaw, Frank Holtsclaw and Brown Holtsclaw; three sisters, Bunie Campbell, Sarah Williams and Bessie Gouge. Survivors include two sons, J.L. Holtsclaw, Quinlan, TX, Dennis Holtsclaw, Wesley Chapel, FL; three daughters: Delores Jarrett and Lori Benfield, both of Roan Mountain, and Claire Malito, Lake Worth, FL; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
