Carmel Guy Holtsclaw, age 78, 7290 Hwy 19-E, Roan Mountain died Tuesday, May 25 2004 at Stockton Residential Home for the Elderly. He was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Weaber and Ethel Johnson Holtsclaw. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-mother, the one that raised him, Nettie Edney Holtsclaw, four brothers, Arville, Boyd, Conley, Danny Holtsclaw, two sisters, Vernie Hughes and Norma Birchfield. Survivors include three sisters and one brother-in-law, Onza Johnson, Beulah Hughes, Renolee and J.D. Whitehead, all of Roan Mountain, one sister-in-law, Blanche Holtsclaw, Roan Mountain, thirteen nephews and 13 nieces, several great nieces and great nephews also survive. Also surviving are special friends, Leroy and Louella Stockton, Diane Tolley, Tammy Blevins, Mitt Tonnson, all employees of Stockton’s Residential Home for the Elderly. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 27, at the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home Roan Mountain, with Rev. Barry Shepherd and Pastor Jerry McCoury officiating. Music will be under the direction of Burbank Quartet. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, prior to the funeral service or friends may call at the residence of Onza Johnson, 179 Hampton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, anytime. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 28 at Johnson Cemetery, Crabtree Community. Active pallbearers will be all nephews, Vernon, Roman, Gary, Johnny, Kenneth, Eddie, Ricky Holtsclaw, Enith Rhymer, Wade and Gary Dale Hughes, Junior and Rondal, and Scotty Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers will be Ivy Height Baptist Church Men’s Class, Burbank Baptist Church Men’s Class, Morgan Branch Baptist Church Men’s Class and Joe Berry. BLANNIE CARDEN Blannie Livingston Carden, age 92, Life Care Center of Elizabethton, formerly of 539 Hwy. 91, Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 14, 2004 following an extended illness. Mrs. Carden was a native of Carter County and a member of Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late George P. and Susan Estep Livingston. She was formerly employed by Magnavox and Bemberg Corporation. Mrs. Carden was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy A. Carden, in 2000, three brothers, Erwin, Alfred and Luther Livingston, two sisters, Bernice White and Clara Richardson. Survivors include one sister Nancy Caroline Madden and one sister-in-law, Mary Evelyn Arnold both of Elizabethton and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 16, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton with Rev. Clate Briggs and Rev. Elmer Carter officiating. Music will be under the direction of Marie Parlier and Sherry Richardson. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel prior to the funeral service or friends may call at the residence, 539 Hwy 91, Elizabethton anytime. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 17 at Garland Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be L.D. Walter Earl Lane, of Wichita Falls, TX, formerly of Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 13, 2004. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2004 in the chapel of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home, Wichita Falls with Tom Rodgers of Grace Church and Isaac Butterworth of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home, Wichita Falls, TX. The family will receive friends from 8:00 until 9:00 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004 at the Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton. A graveside service will be held at Happy Valley Memorial Park Elizabethton, TN at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2004 with Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Monday for the graveside service. Arrangements are under the direction of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Earl was born on May 28, 1915 in McRoberts, Kentucky to Bluford Murray Lane and Arda Jane Sampson Lane. His family originated in London, England many generations ago. A distant grandfather served as the sheriff of London at one time. His great-great-great-great-grandfather Tidence Lane was the first Baptist minister in the state of Tennessee. Earl was the third of five brothers. He spent his childhood in Middlesboro, Kentucky and his family later moved to Elizabethton, Tennessee. He married Lola Mae Dancy in August, 1938. She died in 1972. He married Gertrude Banner in January, 1975 and she died in 2003. Earl proudly served his country in the Marines during World War II. He was stationed in China, the Philippines, and the Aleutian Islands. Following the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to Tennessee. After returning from the war, he worked for many years as a knitting mechanic at Beaunit Fibers in Elizabethton and was an excellent mechanic on most any equipment. While still working, and after his retirement, he raised Tennessee Walking horses. He showed his horses in many horse shows throughout Tennessee. After suffering a heart attack, Mr. Lane moved to Wichita Falls, TX to be near his family. He loved to walk and visit with the other residents at Lakeridge Place. He celebrated his 89th birthday on May 28, 2004 with a party there. He enjoyed his new home very much and his new cowboy hat showed he had become a genuine Texan. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. Mr. Lane was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Authur Lane and Earnest Lane, one son, Bill Lane and one granddaughter, Susan Lane. Survivors include one son, Ron Lane and wife Annis, Wichita Falls, TX, one daughter, Esther Herd and her husband Dennis, College Station, TX, two granddaughters, Linda Pace, The Woodland, TX and Sharon Brock, College Station, TX, four grandsons, Larry Herd, College Station, TX, Steve Lane, Wasilla, AK, John Lane, Wichita Falls, TX and David Lane, Streetman, TX, two brothers, Bill Lane, CA and Paul Lane, FL. He is also survived by four great-granddaughters, eight great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Foundation, 3601 Taft Blvd., Wichita Falls, TX 76308 or Grace Church Building Fund, 4301 Cedar Elm, Wichita Falls, TX 76308. Paul Kenneth Miller, age 50, of 230 Apple Tree Lane, Elizabethton, died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness. A native of Johnson City, TN, he is a son of Loretta Rakes Miller of Johnson City, TN and the late John Hurley Miller. Mr. Miller was of the Baptist faith and was retired from American Water Heater. Survivors in addition to his mother are his wife, Alma Miller of the home, two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Christy Miller of Jonesboro, and Chris and Candy Miller of Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Summer Miller of Elizabethton; one grandson, Christopher Miller of Elizabethton; two brothers, John R. Miller of Johnson City and Larry E. Miller of Gray; three sisters and one son-in-law, Hurleah and Wayne Jones of Elizabethton, Jewel Williamson of Johnson City, and Laura Hathaway of Jonesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Monte Vista Burial Park, Johnson City, TN. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Whetsell and Gene Sparks. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. for the service. Richard James Shanahan, age 69, Pine Ridge Care Center, Elizabethton died Monday, July 5, 2004 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a native of East Syracuse, NY and was the son of the late Maurice and Alice Fitzgerald Shanahan. Mr. Shanahan was a graduate of Marshall High School in Rochester, NY. He was of the Catholic faith and a retired machinist and retired bartender and a cook. He was a member of American Legion and a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Shanahan. Survivors include five sons and four daughters-in-law, Mike and Mary Shanahan, Watertown, NY, John and Melody Shanahan, Sackets Harbor, NY, Danny and Roxanne Shanahan, Rolesville, NC, Timothy and Michelle Shanahan, Syracuse, NY, Ricky Shanahan, Hickory, NC, three daughters and one son-in-law, Karen Bartholomew and finance’, John Bowman, both of Elizabethton, Suzanne Hammond, Mexico, NY, Mary Shanahan and Troy, Syracuse, NY, 20 grandchildren, one great grandson, three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Eileen Casey, Rochester, NY, Maureen and Ronald Schoeneberger, Rochester, NY, Patricia and Harold Leader, Niverville, NY. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Allen and Bernice Smith Bowers. She was a member of Elizabethton Bible Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Parlier, four sons, Randy, David, Arthur and Burl Parlier, three brothers, Elmer Bowers, Floyd Bowers, Ernest Bowers and one sister, Dorothy Parlier. CLINTON H. COWAN Clinton H. Cowan, age 77, Burgettstown, PA, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 in Weirton Medical Center, Weirton, WV. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Rondo and Winnie Bunton Cowan. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Maples Texaco. He is preceded in death by a brother Vestal Cowan and a sister, Rosa Conway. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Campbell Cowan; two sons and one daughter-in-law: Clinton R. Cowan and Bruce E. and Patricia Cowan; one granddaughter, Katie Cowan. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. - Wednesday, May 12th at the Meadowview Baptist Church with Rev. Dale G. Smith, age 79, 412 Ferguson Ave., Elizabethton, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness. A native of Blue Mountain, MS, he was the son of the late Jim and Carrie Belle Collins Smith. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and attended West Side Christian Church. Mr. Smith was a retired employee of Tri-State/Inland Container, with thirty-two years of service. Survivors include his wife, Joan Honeycutt Smith, of the home, two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Danny and Kathy Smith, David and Joanie Smith, all of Elizabethton, one brother, Charles Smith, Blue Mountain, GA, two sisters, Becky Wilkenson, Pearlene Cobb, both of Southhaven, MS, three grandchildren, Mrs. Lee (Jennifer) Owens of Piney Flats, Justin Smith of Nashville, and Tracey Smith, of Elizabethton. A native of Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late John N. and Susan Elliott Osborne. She was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Johnny Stout and her second husband, Edward Lewis, after 11 years of marriage, two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. A native of Unicoi County, TN, he lived in Carter County for the last 10 years. He is a son of Eston and Janice Tittle Cooper of Erwin. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Cooper was a former employee of N N, Inc., Ball & Roller Division of Erwin, TN. Survivors in addition to his parents are his spouse, Brenda Tester Cooper of the home, one stepson, Andrew Whitehead of Elizabethton, three brothers, Rick Cooper, Steve Cooper and Andrew Cooper, all of Erwin. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Johnny Keith Cooper will be conducted Friday, May 7, at 8:00 p.m. at the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, TN, following an extended illness. A native of Exeter, VA, he had lived in Carter County most of his life. He was the son of the late Earl and Lillie Peters Walker. He was a member of Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Carter County Highway Department. Mr. Walker was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Evelyn Guy Walker, June 26, 1995, a sister, Betty Williams, 1996 and one brother, Eugene Walker, 1944. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Townsend Walker, of the home, daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Malcolm Weathers, Tampa, FL, five step-children, several step-grandchildren, one sister and brother-in-law, Nyoka and Sherrell Perry, Elizabethton, one brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Sharon Walker, Elizabethton, brother-in-law, Lucian Williams, Mt.
