Robert W. Fortner, age 57, 377 Nave Hollow Loop, Elizabethton, died Saturday, February 14, 2004 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Elbert M. and Ada Belle Smith Fortner. Mr. Fortner was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret June Hicks and one half-brother Charles Edward Taylor. Survivors include three brothers: Bill Fortner, Jack Fortner and Dennis Fortner, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Jean Webb, Akron, OH; several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M., Monday, February 16th in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton with Rev. Darrell Holly officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:00 P.M. on Monday prior to the funeral service in the chapel. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday at the Caldwell Springs Cemetery. SARA S. CARLSON Sara S. Carlson, age 91, 1838 Woodhaven Drive, Elizabethton, former resident of Colonial Hill Retirement Center, Johnson City, died Friday, March 19, 2004 at Hermitage Health Care Center, Elizabethton following an extended illness. A native of Middlesex, PA, she was the daughter of the late Irwin and Lydia Buckwalter Sampson. She attended Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Carlson, two brothers, Irwin “Bud” Sampson and Logan Sampson. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Sally and Rod Stipe, Elizabethton, two grandchildren, Sada Stipe, Elizabethton, Zach Stipe, Elizabethton, four sisters, Leona McConnel, PA, Betty Jones, PA, Marge Szabo, PA, Jane Randazzo, FL, one brother-in-law, Edward Carlson, MS, several nieces and nephews also survive. Mary L. Lewis, age 83, formerly of 140 Central Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at Life Care Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late, David and Minnie Hamby Jones. She was a homemaker and member of King Springs Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by Clarence Lewis in 1991, a daughter Patsy Adams-Hollifield, four sisters and two brothers. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Max Irick, Charleston, SC, Karen and Tim Robey, Johnson City, three sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence R. and Phyllis Lewis, Johnson City, John D. and Claudette Lewis, Millington, TN, Eddie and Alethia Lewis, Hampton, one sister and brother-in-law, Ola and Carl Hicks, Elizabethton, fifteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. KATE RANGE SAMS Kate Range Sams, age 93, 1591 Southside Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, January 9, 2004 at Hermitage Health Center, Elizabethton. She was a native of Carter County, (Gap Creek Community), and was the daughter of the late William Abraham and Etta Pierce Range. Mrs. Sams was a member of Zion Baptist Church and a homemaker.. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Sams, she was one of ten children, all girls: Myrtle Collins, Maude Morton, Sallie Hyder, Celia Hyder, Ossie Meredith, Hattie Vanover, and Haskle Range. Mrs. Fair was a native of West Jefferson, NC, and had lived most of her life in Carter County. She is the daughter of the late John & Maude Miller Bare. Mrs. Fair was a member of Roan Street Freewill Baptist Church and was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. She is preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Phyllis Lee Calloway, age 63, 324 Berry Hill Road, Elizabethton died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at her residence unexpectedly. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John Levi and Dorothy Basil Ball Lee. She attended Stoney Creek Baptist Church and was a retired store clerk. Mrs. Calloway was a 1959 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family and friends very much. She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Harold S. Fair and a niece, Vicki Lee Petty. Nora I. Malone, age 93, 3443 Hickerson Dr., San Jose, CA, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at Mt. Pleasant Convalescent Hospital, San Jose, CA following a brief illness. A native of North Carolina, she had been a former resident of Elizabethton. Mrs. Malone was the daughter of the late J.W. and Elminer Morrow Phillips. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Elizabethton. Mrs. Malone was a retired employee of San Jose Hospital, San Jose, CA from the Housekeeping Department and was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation. She loved gardening, reading, sewing and watching soap operas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Webb H. Malone, daughter Clara Elizabeth Batten, 1992. Charles Robinson, age 48, of 2315 Eagle Drive, Elizabethton, passed away at 12:30 AM Wednesday in the Johnson City Medical Center. He died as a result of an apparent heart attack while jogging with his co-workers shortly before 5:00 PM Tuesday. Charles was born in Bristol, Tennessee and had lived most of his life in Elizabethton. He was the publisher of the Elizabethton Star. He was a 1973 graduate of Elizabethton High School and had attended East Tennessee State University. Charles was a member of the Grace Fellowship Church in Johnson City. Charles was an very active member of the Elizabethton community. He was a member of the Carter County Chamber of Commerce, the Executive Board of the United Way, the Elizabethton Rotary Club, had coached numerous T-Ball, Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball teams in the community, and was a former member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and uncle to his family. He is survived by his wife Angie Odom Robinson of the home, a daughter, Jessica Robinson of the home, two sons, Josh and Jeremy Robinson both of the home, his parents, Frank and Ann Childress Robinson of 700 Fairway Drive, Elizabethton, a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Fred Goodwin of 654 Woodland Drive, Elizabethton, two nieces, Angela Willocks of Quail Ridge Road, Johnson City and Amy Laney of 422 Bonnie Kate Drive, Elizabethton, one nephew, Nathan Goodwin of 654 Woodland Drive, Elizabethton, one great niece, Savannah Laney of Elizabethton, two great nephews, Christian Laney of Elizabethton, William Willocks of Johnson City, and a very special family member Harvey Pritchard. A native of Ashe County, NC, Mrs. Davis had lived in Elizabethton since 1927. She was a daughter of the late Martin and Minnie Taylor Greer. Mrs. Davis was of the Baptist faith and was a housewife. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence R. Davis, Sr. in 1967, 2 infant grandchildren, one infant great-grandchild, one special grandson, Raymond Nidiffer, May 8, 2004, one special great-grandson, Jamie Lee Pate, December 8, 2002 and one son-in-law, Gene Austin.
