JEWELL HUGHES Jewell Hughes, age 55, 124 Indian Creek Road, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Meredith and Mary Johnson Morton. Mrs. Hughes was a retired bookkeeper from Edens Carpet. She was a member of Slagles United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a infant son, Roger Hughes. Survivors include her husband, Tony Hughes, of the home, two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Jack and Kelsie Hughes, Elizabethton, Michael and Amanda Hughes, Elizabethton, one sister, Jane Hyder, Elizabethton, one brother and sister-in-law, Robert Jack and Kathy Morton, Elizabethton, sister-in-law, Aricillis and spouse, Ronnie Neil, Elizabethton, one brother-in-law, Jimmy Hughes, Elizabethton, granddaughter, Jasmine Hughes, Elizabethton, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Joseph Manis, minister officiating. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 8, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Matt Springer, Kelly Smith, Richard Oaks, Shawn Shephard, Tony Heaton and Tai Nidiffer. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Mapes Piano String Company and The Honeys Camping Club of Elizabethton. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, to go in procession to the cemetery. L.D. CAMPBELL L.D. Campbell, age 73, 467 Bunker Hill Road, Bluff City, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital unexpectedly. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late, Jerry Emmitt and Mary Lillie Campbell. He was a member of Elizabethton Assembly of God and a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by two step-sons, one brother and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Daisy Sheets Campbell, of the home, two step-daughters, Wanda Hyder, Elizabethton, Janet English, Morganton, NC, one step-son, Junior and spouse, Gloria Sheets, Limestone, five step-grandchildren, Tony Parker, Morristown, Pamela Gasdia, Greenville, NC, Jeffery Sheets, Baltimore, MD, Josh English, Morganton, NC, Sonja Nebow, Spruce Pine, NC, several step great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2004 at Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Pastor Ricky Jones officiating. NORMAN E. JULIAN Norman E. Julian, age 86, Roan Highlands Nursing Center, formerly of 228 Old Siam Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, February 6, 2004 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Rev. Caine and Delia McKinney Julian. He was a retired employee of Bemberg Corporation after 30 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Evelyn Garland Julianand one brother, Nath Julian. He was a U.S. Army-Air Corp veteran having served in World War II. He loved to fish and garden. Survivors include two sons, Jim Julian, Elizabethton, Dan Julian, Unicoi, one sister, Geneva Blevins, Roan Highlands Nursing Center, one nephew, two nieces and one brother-in-law, James Hughes, Roan Mountain also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2004 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Don Julian officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. MILDRED G. POTTER Mildred G. Potter, age 88, 220 Enoch Potter Lane, Elk Park, NC, died Monday, February 2, 2004 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC, following an extended illness. A native of Gardners, PA, Mrs. Potter had lived in Avery County, NC for the last 10 years. She was a member of Palma Sola Presbyterian Church, Bradenton, FL. She was a retired nurses aid and for the last 14 years she was in private nursing. Mrs. Potter was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Jack, and two sisters, Nellie Walters and Virginia Guise. Survivors include her husband, Millard W. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Lola Gentry. She was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Harper, and two brothers. Survivors include four daughters, Alta Harper, Alice Harper Thrift, Mary Harper Miller, Ruby Harper Miller, all of Elizabethton, one son, Gene Harper, Elizabethton, four grandchildren, Joyce Ann Treadway, Patricia Hensley, Johnny Miller, Jerry Miller, all of Elizabethton, three great grandchildren, Angela Stout, Erica Hensley and Johnnie Lou Garland, all of Elizabethton, a special step-granddaughter and spouse, Debbie and David Smith, Apex, NC, special step- grandson, Josh Taylor, Elizabethton. HARRISON SAMUEL BOWERS Harrison Samuel Bowers, age 72, 864 Blue Springs Road, Elizabethton died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at his daughter’s residence, 868 Blue Springs Road, Elizabethton following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Nick and Eliza Jane Williams Bowers. Mr. Bowers became a member of Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church in 1967, where he became an ordained deacon in August 1977. He was a former employee of East Tennessee Chair Company and former employee of Carter County Highway Department and a retired employee of Carter County School System. He was a former member of Carter County Rescue Squad and a life time member of Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Buckles Bowers, May 2, 1983 and one brother, Lloyd Bowers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Bobby Joe Hall, Elizabethton, two step-grandchildren, Toni Gilbert, Del Rio, TN, Joseph Hall, Greeneville, TN, three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Florence Campbell, Elizabethton, Betty June and Millard Bowers, Elizabethton, Hazel and Lawrence Stevens, Elizabethton, three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Jeanette Bowers, Elizabethton, Shirley and Brenda Bowers, Elizabethton, Harold Bowers, Elizabethton, several nieces and nephews, several great nieces and great nephews, two very special friends, Bobby Hall, Elizabethton and Robin Loveless, Elizabethton also survive. Quillen VA Medical Center Nursing Home, Mountain Home, TN, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Dewey and Addie Eggers White. He was a member of East Side Christian Church. He was a former employee of Beaunit Fibers. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served during peacetime. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Greer, and a brother, Norman “Curley” White. She was preceded in death by a son, Jody Marlow, one brother, and two sisters. Survivors include her husband, Willie E. A native of Waterloo, New York, she was the daughter of the late Lelond Knuppenburg and Hazel Smith Knuppenburg Sexton. Mrs. Pollard was a member of Martindale Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Orval Leroy Pollard, of the home; two sons: Lelond Pollard, Summerville, SC and Richard Pollard, Powell, TN; one daughter, Tammy Paxton,Geneva, Florida; four grand-children; Twin-sister, June Price, Elizabethton; five half-sisters; two half-brothers; Several nieces and nephews also survive. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Pollard will be conducted at 6:30 P.M. - Wednesday, January 28th, at Martindale Baptist Church, with Rev. Delbert Storie officiating. She was a homemaker and attended Memorial Presbyterian Church.
