James H. White

90 year old James H. White of Dowelltown died Saturday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was born in Dowelltown to his parents, the late Robert J. and Bessie Allen White. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a Daughter, Patricia Ann White; 2 Sisters, Geraldine Wilson and Mildren Judish. He was a lifelong member of the Dowelltown United Methodist Church, 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of DeKalb Lodge #358, Scottish Rite, Al Menah Temple Shriners in Nashville, Smithville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He served in the 320th Infantry 35th Division in Europe serving in the U.S. Army in WW II. White taught Agriculture at Liberty High School after the War and then went to work for Kraft Foods in Alexandria before being appointed Postmaster in Dowelltown. He formerly served as the City Recorder for Dowelltown. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Thompson White of Dowelltown; 2 Sons, Robert J. "Bobby" and wife Sarah White of Alexandria, Stephen A. and wife Vicky White of Murfreesboro; 5 Grandchildren, Elizabeth and her husband Bryan Kleparek of Murfreesboro, James H. White of Dowelltown, Stephanie and her husband Aaron Lawrence of Murfreesboro, John R. White of Dowelltown, Daniel B. White of Murfreesboro; 5 Great-Grandchildren, Kyra Kleparek, Logan Lawrence, Keva Kleparek, Taylor White, Carly Lawrence; 1 Sister, Lorraine and her husband, Richard "Dick" Engel of Oak Ridge; Brother-in-law, Robert Michael Thompson of Odessa, Texas; Adoptive Family, Rob and Nora Harvey; Special Friends, Matilda Earl and Caeleb Grey and Several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:AM Tuesday at the Dowelltown United Methodist Church with Terry Little and David Lunsford officiating. Burial will be in the Whorton Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Dowelltown United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the charity of your choice. Visitation will be Monday 2:PM until 8:PM at the Funeral Home and Tuesday 9:AM until the time of the service at 11 at the Church. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Comer Bratcher

76 year old Comer Bratcher of Smithville died Friday night at his residence. He was born to his parents, the late Euyl and Lela Lawson Bratcher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Brother, Danny Bratcher and Mother-in-law, Louise Winchester and Father-in-law, James Ernest Winchester, Sr. Bratcher was a Farmer. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janice Bratcher of Smithville; 2 Daughters, Sherry Bowling and Stephanie (Robert) Myers both of Murfreesboro; 3 Grandchildren, Zachary Bowling, Ashley Bowling and Fiance Jon Slager, Brinlee Myers; 2 Step-Granddaughters, Thressa Myers and Maddie Myers; 1 Great-Grandson, Malachi Bowling; 3 Sisters, Edith (Willus) Roberts of McMinnville, Earlene (R.L.) Redmon of Smithville, Frances (Kenneth) Waggoner of Smithville; 1 Brother, Harold (Dorothy) Bratcher of Smithville; Several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 1:PM Monday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Donnie Kelly officiating and burial to follow in Banks Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Saturday 6:PM until 9:PM, Sunday 11:AM until 9:PM and Monday 9:AM until the time of the service at 1:PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Lou Ada Neal

78 year old Lou Ada Neal of Smithville died Thursday at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 7, 1935 to Herbert and Sarah Elizabeth Poss Colwell. Many years ago she was involved with Cub Scouts where she served as a den mother. She worked several years in various factories. She truly enjoyed meeting people and visiting in their homes, as she sold Avon products for over 45 years, as well as Mary Kay products, Tupperware and Home Interior. She was known by everyone as a beautiful and poised lady, with great respect for others. She will be remembered for being a very kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a member of the Bright Hill United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by brother Auvil Colwell and sister Audrey Colwell Moore. She is survived by her Loving and Devoted husband of 62 years and faithful caregiver, Paul Y. Neal, 2 daughters: Kathy and husband Ronnie Hendrixson of Smithville, Rhonda and husband Robert Jarvis of Alexandria; 1 Son: Marty Neal of Smithville; 3 Grandsons: Chris and wife Dianne Crook of Smithville, Brad Crook and Shauna Stringer of Liberty, Matthew and wife Christy Hendrixson of Smithville; Granddaughter Angela and husband Gary Phelps of Auburntown; 10 Great Grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be 2:PM Sunday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. David Tramel and John Carpenter officiating and burial in Whorton Springs Cemtery. Visitation with the Neal family will be Saturday 10:AM until 8:PM and Sunday 9:AM until time of service at 2:PM. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Avalon Hospice, St. Jude's Hospital or charity of your choice. DeKalb Funeral Chapel in Smithville is in charge of the arrangements.

Reed August Hacker

45 year old Reed August Hacker of Smithville died Wednesday at his residence. He was the son of David & Virgie Reed Hacker. He was a welder at Star Manufacturing and a member of First Christian Church in Sparta. Mr. Hacker's request was to be cremated. A Memorial visitation with the family will be held Saturday from 2:PM until 4:PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. In addition to his parents he is survived by Daughter: Ashley Crystal Bastion of San Antonio, TX; 2 Brothers: Bruce Michael Hacker of Greenville, MI and David Hacker of Columbia, SC; 1 Sister: Vanessa June Wolverton of Smithville. In lieu of flowers family has asked that donations be made to First Christian Church in Sparta. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements

Roberta T. Ellis

91 year old Roberta T. Ellis of Dowelltown died Sunday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker, retired factory worker, and a long time member of the Snow Hill Baptist Church. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Lee Ellis; parents, William Charlie and Emma Florence Robinson Turner; four sisters, Ola Walls, Lucille Paschal, Charlie Mai Young, and Sula Turner; and five brothers, Lemmie, Frank, Clyde, Erby, and Carl Turner. Survivors include a daughter, Dora Fay Turner of Dowelltown. Three grandchildren, Jonathan Turner of Nashville, Jennifer and husband Rich Wisthuff of Hermitage, and Jamie Turner of Dowelltown. One great grandchild, Emma Catherine Wisthuff of Hermitage. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Odell Bly

37 year old Michael Odell Bly of Murfreesboro, died Monday at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Born in Smithville, he was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Ann Thompson Bly. Michael is survived by a daughter, Ashley Bly of Murfreesboro; father and stepmother, Ricky and Marlene Bly of Liberty; sisters, Mary (Justin) Lohorn and Stephanie (Kenny Murphy) Bly both of Smithville; brothers, Brian (Kayla) Bly and Steven (Cristy Reeder) Bly both of Smithville; grandmother, Willa Dean Turner of Smithville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown. Visitation will be on Sunday from 10 a.m. till service time. Interment will be at Hillview cemetery in Alexandria.

Sarah Ruth Vandergriff

97 year old Sarah Ruth Vandergriff of Liberty passed away Thursday morning June 19, 2014 at NHC Healthcare in Smithville. She was born July 5, 1916 in Liberty to her parents, the late John Robert and Janetta Mai Ferrell Smithson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Vandergriff and a sister, Vinny Leal New. Mrs. Ruth was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church having joined the McMinnville First United Methodist Church on December 25, 1926 and then later became a member of the Dowelltown United Methodist Church and was President Emeritus of the United Methodist Women. She was a graduate of the Liberty High School in 1933, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Caney Fork Chapter, United Sates Daughters of 1812 Upper Cumberland Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy Murfreesboro #91. She is survived by daughter, Annette Floyd of Liberty; 2 grandsons John Clark (Krista) Floyd of Oakland, TN, James Bradley (Lee) Floyd of Olive Branch, MS; 2 great-grandsons, Braxton and Bryson Floyd of Olive Branch, MS; Nieces and Nephews, Harriett New of Chattanooga, Bill (Mary Beth) New of Lenoir City, TN, Burnace (Barbara) Vandergriff and Margaret (Cantrell) Jones both of Smithville, Ann Vandergriff of Salt Lake City, Utah, Douglas (Marlene) Snyder and Sandy (Ken) Delker both of Washington, MI. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00PM Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Dowelltown United Methodist Church with Bros. David Lunsford, Terry Little and Michael Hale officiating and burial to follow in Salem Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Friday 3:PM until 8:PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel and on Saturday 10:AM until the time of the service at 1:PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.

Mitzi Ann Lawson

45 year old Mitzi Ann Lawson of Woodbury died Sunday at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. She was a homemaker and a Pentecostal. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Ararat Cemetery. Robert Presley will officiate. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jewell and Willette Estes Lawson. Survivors include her boyfriend, John Helms of Woodbury. One son, Ryan Lawson of Readyville. Three daughters, Kendra Lawson of Alabama, Chelsey Lawson of Macon County, and Sarah Anne Barrett of Murfreesboro. One brother, Larry Parker of McMinnville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. No visitation will be held at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the funeral home to help with burial expenses.

95 year old Lottie Cook of Alexandria, died Monday evening at Dekalb Community Hospital in Smithville. Born in Dekalb County, she was the daughter of the late William and Matilda Hale Crook and was preceded in death by her husband, Yank Cook; son-in-law, Carroll "John" Clemons; grandson, Christopher Clemons; great granddaughter, Heather Thompson; stepsons, Robert, Roy and Carl Cook; 4 brothers and 6 sisters. Lottie was retired from the Auburntown Shirt Factory and was a member of Prosperity Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Betty Jane (Ricky) Barrett and Linda Clemons both of Alexandria; sisters, Bertie Barrett and Lucille Laythe; step-daughter-in-law, Hazel Cook; grandchildren, Charlotte (Mark) Webster of Brush Creek, Julie (Shannon) Malone of Alexandria, Junior (Laura) Ashford of Smithville, Joyce (Ronald) Kelly of Brush Creek and Stephanie McGhee; great grandchildren, Larissa Thompson, Reilly, MaKenna and Ryan Kelly, Caleb and Brady McGhee, Tanner Malone; great great grandchildren, Zoei and Zayne Thompson, Zayden Everette, Baylor and Bryce Thompson, Lyren Clark; step-grandchildren; Dorothy George, Puggy Cook, Joe Cook, Ronnie Cook, Pam Young, Lisa Rhody, Robbie Joan Fraizer, Susie Hights, Carol Hale, Joann Jones, David Cook, Bre'l Ashford. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Hunter Funeral Home with Rev. Don Rigsby and Rev. Thurman Seber officiating. Visitation 11 a.m. till 8 p.m. Wednesday and prior to services on Thursday. Pallbearers, Mark Webster, Shannon Malone, Ronald Kelly, Wayne Driver, Ted Ray, Hoyte Barrett. Interment at Salem Cemetery, Liberty, TN.

Mr. Ray Doyle "Tiny" Barnes age 59 of Smithville, passed away Monday morning at his residence. He was the son of the late Luther and Nelda Poss Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 brother, Vernon Barnes and 2 sisters, Denise Wenger and Zelda Barnes. He was a construction worker. Tiny is survived by his wife of 36 yrs., Shirl Barnes of Smithville; 3 sons, Doug (Kelly) Barnes of Smithville, Kevin (Christina) Barnes of Centertown and Josh Gunter of Smithville; Nieces and Nephew that where just like children: Lori Myrick, April Barnes and Donnie Barnes; Grandchildren, Brooklyn Barnes, Jacklyn Reed, Maggie Myrick, Rick and Zack Gunter, Jennifer and Hunter Barnes; 3 brothers, Kenny Barnes, Jeff Barnes and Thomas Rose; nieces, Jennifer Strickland, Peggy Redmon, Carla Barnes, Jessica Cantrell, Jennifer Flatt, Kayla Rose, Misty Sharp and Renee Barnes; nephews, Steven Barnes and Joshua Barnes; Several other nieces and nephews also survive; Close Friend, Cat Martin. Funeral services will be conducted 2:PM Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Lori Myrick and Bro. Michael Hale officiating and interment to follow in the Barnes Family cemetery in the Short Mountain Community. Visitation will be Tuesday 1:PM until 8:PM and Wednesday 9:AM until the time of the service at 2:PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses.
