Rev. Morris L. Porter, 77, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Rev. Morris L. Porter, 77, of Kingsport, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday (Nov. 23, 2004) while in the VA Medical Center, Augusta, Ga.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Rev. Porter had served as pastor at several churches in the area.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean (Forbes) Porter; and his son, Richard (Rick) Porter.

He is survived by his son, John M. Porter; daughter-in-law, ChongAye Porter; four grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, John-Morris and Jeanhee Porter; sister, Margaret E. Stockton Holda; and his brother, Robert Porter.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Marshall officiating.

Burial will be at Holston View cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Charles Dewitt Byrd VFW Post #3382 of Kingsport.

Frank Afton Roller, 76, Kingsport.
Graveside services for Frank Afton Roller, 76, of Kingsport, who died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 25, 2004), will conducted at 2 p.m. today in Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

Elwood W. Shackleford, 86, Pennington Gap, Va.
PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Elwood W. "Shack" Shackleford was born in Luray, Va., on Friday, Nov. 15, 1918, and passed away on Friday (Nov. 26, 2004) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap at the age of 86.

He had been living in Pennington Gap for the past 29 years. He retired from General Motors in Dayton, Ohio. He served in the CCCs, last stationed at Cumberland Bowl Park in Jonesville, Va.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Pennington Gap.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Shackleford; mother, Mamie Rickerd; father, Norris Shackleford; sister, Charlotte Meadows; and two brothers, Sylvester and Jessee Shackleford.

Survivors include two sons, James R. Shackleford and wife Diane of Englewood, Ohio, and Gary L. Shackleford and wife Donna of Pennington Gap; two granddaughters, Carla OConnor and husband James of Ohio, and Shannon Shackleford of Pennington Gap; step-granddaughter, Crystal Clinebell and husband, Bryan; two step-great-grandsons, Codie Garrett and Bryan Clinebell Jr., all of Pennington Gap; two brothers, Harold Shackleford and wife Francis of Luray, Va., and Phillip Norris of Culpepper, Va.; two sisters, Janice Baldwin and husband Joe of Rilleyville, Va., and Maxine Seekford of Boonsboro, Md. He is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and a very special friend, Geneva Castellenas.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Va.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary of the funeral home with Dr. Charles Barrier officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go to the cemetery.

Jonathon Clyde Simcox, 86, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Jonathon Clyde Simcox, 86, of Blountville, passed away Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004) at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete.

Akard Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn., is serving the family of Mr. Simcox.

Ollie V. Smith, 85, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Ollie V. (Garrison) Smith, 85, passed away Thursday (Nov. 25, 2004) at her home.

She was born in Lee County, Va., resided in Appalachia, Va., for most of her life, and had lived in Big Stone Gap for the past two years.

She was of Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd C. Smith; two grandsons, Joseph Clay Brooks and Michael Charles Brooks; and a son-in-law, David Brooks.

Surviving are two daughters, Arlee Burton and Carolyn Brooks, both of Big Stone Gap; four grandchildren, Tammy Dillon and Jaclyn Brooks, both of Big Stone Gap, Lelia Baylor of Clinton, Tenn., and Patrick Burton of East Stone Gap, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Melvin Dillon, Wendy Dillon, Michael Barnette and Jimmy Barnette; one brother, Clyde Garrison of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Lonnie Brooks officiating.

Committal services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Glencoe Cemetery, Big Stone Gap. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.

Robert M. Sneed, 69, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Robert M. Sneed, 69, 1817 Oakwood Drive, went to be with the Lord Thursday (Nov. 25, 2004) at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. Robert served in the U.S. Air Force.

His father, T.M. Sneed, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his mother, Alice E. Sneed, Kingsport; a brother, Larry W. Sneed; and one nephew.

Calling hours are any time after 3 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens with military rites by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the VFW.

Friends are asked to meet at the graveside prior to services.

Ruby "Peg" Suiter, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - On Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004) at 5:30 a.m., Ruby "Peg" White Suiter passed through the curtain and into the presence of her Lord to receive her heavenly reward.

She leaves many people to be saddened by their loss of this wonderful, godly friend, but they will rejoice that she is now free of earthly pain.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Sam Suiter in 1971; godly parents, Ezra White and Minnie Holbrook White; brother, Carl B. White; sister, Thelma Bradford.

Those family members and friends left to continue their earthly journey without Ruby "Peg" include her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bill Kilgore of Kingsport; granddaughter, Karen Kilgore; and grandson, Ken Kilgore, and his wife, Debra Street-Kilgore, all of Kingsport; sister, Verna Greear of Kingsport; sister-in-law, Vivian White of Kingsport; several very special nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Suiter was a member of First Christian Church of Kingsport.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Private graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving the Suiter family.

Bertha Swafford, 92, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mrs. Bertha Mae Swafford, 92, 134 East Wanola Ave., departed this life Thursday morning (Nov. 25, 2004) at Hillside Care Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Swafford was born in Dayton, Tenn., and made her home here in Kingsport for the past 70 years. She was retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Eastern Star and was formerly a member of the Elks.

Surviving are one son, Mr. Gerald Benton of Kingsport; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Mrs. Willie Dean Williams of Cleveland, Tenn.; three nephews, Jimmy Blair, Marshall Blair and Vernon Williams, all of Cleveland.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the church with the Rev. Dr. Anthony Daniels officiating.

Interment will follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.

Mrs. Bertha Mae Swafford and family are in the care of Robinson Funeral Services, Kingsport.

Margaret Trent, 69, Rogersville.
Services for Margaret Ozil Trent, 69, Rogersville, who went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Nov. 25, 2004), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Friendly View Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Wolfe and the Rev. R.L. Warren officiating.

Interment will be at the Friendly View Cemetery.

Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Arnold Jr., 77, Bluff City.
Graveside services for Charles Arnold Jr., 77, Bluff City, who went to be with his Lord on Tuesday (Nov. 23, 2004), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Hope.

East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Arnold family.

Peyton L. Broome, seven-day-old, Fall Branch.
FALL BRANCH - Services for Peyton Lawson Broome, son of Jason and Amy Broome, who went to be with Jesus on Monday (Nov. 15, 2004), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with Dr. Phil Hoskins and the Rev. Tom Phillips officiating.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the East Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Garry Eads officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Broome, Brady Lawson and Andrew Broome.

Ruth Ann Browder, 53, Johnson City
Services for Ruth Ann Blevins Browder, 53, who passed away Wednesday (Nov. 24, 2004), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Hamlett Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, with Pastor Kyle Falin and Pastor Eddie L. McAmis officiating.

Burial will be in Eastern Star Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Harold Jobe, Carl "Bubby" Johnson Jr., Sherman Johnson, Nathan Johnson, Norman Johnson, Ronnie Browder, Steve Browder, Mike Browder, Tommy Jobe, and Wayne Blevins.

Ida Carpenter, Morristown.
MORRISTOWN - Ida Lou Harrell Carpenter, born Jan. 25, 1920, passed away Thursday (Nov. 25, 2004) at Morristown Hamblen Healthcare System.

She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, having taught Sunday school and was also a member of the choir for many years. She was active with the Springvale Home Demonstration Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Carpenter, November 1998; two brothers, Martin and Ken Harrell; and a sister, Lena Gray.

She was a loving mother to all being called "Momma Ida."

Surviving are one son, Johnny Carpenter and wife Louise; grandchildren, John Carpenter, Matthew Carpenter and their mother Sherry Carpenter, Kevin Ogle and wife Elizabeth; great-granddaughter, McKenzie Carpenter and great-grandson, Andrew Ogle; three brothers, Charlie Harrell Jr., of Memphis and John and Joe Harrell of Rogersville; sisters, Mable Harrell of Rogersville, Dorothy Dye and Clara Jenkins, both of Kingsport, Opal Winchell and Sue and husband Bob Clowers of Morristown; several friends, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m Sunday at the church with the Rev. Mike Henegar officiating.

Interment will follow in the Hamblen Memory Gardens.

Westside Chapel Funeral Home in Morristown is in charge of arrangements.

Alden Carty, Gray.
GRAY - Alden Bernard Carty, Sr., 142 Bauchman Dr., passed away after a short illness at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday (Nov. 24, 2004).

He was a native of Nickelsville, Va. and had lived in Washington County for 40 years.

He was a son of the late Callie and Jerry Carty.

Mr. Carty was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Carty in April 2003; and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Louella Burchfield of Gray; four sons, Woodrow and wife Phyllis, Alden, Jr. and wife Janet, Tommy and wife Debbie, and Kurt and wife Sandy, all of Gray; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gray Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Clint Andrews and Rev. Truman Ferguson officiating.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Washington County Memory Gardens. The family request to meet at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gray Community Chest, P.O. Box 8952, Gray, Tenn. 37615.
