PINEVILLE, Ky. - Mable Ethlane Fink Hoskins, 68, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Arrangements will be announced by Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown.

Vonda M. Jones, 73, Gate City, Va.
Graveside services for Vonda M. Jones, 73, Gate City, Va., who passed away Monday evening (Jan. 31, 2005), will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today at Holston View Cemetery. The family will meet at 2 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Carroll Hurd, Joe Fleming, Hal Livergood, Russell Martin, Gerald Compton, Tom Taylor, Deano Francis, Jack Hobbs, Jimmy Maness, John Luethke, Larry Luethke.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry McClellan, Roger Parton, Joe Newland, Kenneth Miller, Buck Arnold, Fred Luethke Jr., Tom Brooks Sr., and Ross Bright.

Gary Lane, 51, Fall Branch.
FALL BRANCH - Gary Wayne Lane, 51, entered into rest Thursday (Feb. 3, 2005) in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Gate City Funeral Home.

J. T. Martin, 55, Rose Hill, Va.
ROSE HILL, Va. - J.T. Martin, 55, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va.

He was a lifelong resident of Lee County and of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Laura Dash Martin; one brother, Elmer Martin; and one sister, Rosebud Martin Mustard.

He is survived by three sisters, Wanda Wilder of Louisburg, Tenn., Lucille Ensley of Cleveland, Tenn., Irene Melvin of Doublin, Va.; and a special cousin and caretaker, Harry Crider and wife, Sue of Jonesville, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Cedar Hill cemetery in Jonesville, Va.

Mary McCroskey, 87, Blountville.
Services for Mary Whiteman McCroskey, 87, Blountville, who passed away at 5 p.m. Monday (Jan. 31, 2005), will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. today in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Katye Fox and the Rev. John Anderson will officiate.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Entombment will follow in East Lawn Mausoleum II.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Rodefer, Randy Rodefer, David Shields, Billy Shields, Tommy Ramey, Ronald Ramey and Phil Ramey.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Y.A.H. group of Blountville United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Blountville United Methodist Church building fund, P.O. Box 686, Blountville, Tenn. 37617.

Sam C. Moffitt, 90, Johnson City.
JOHNSON CITY - Sam Moffitt, 90, North Hills Drive, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 3, 2005.

Mr. Moffitt was a long-time native of Mitchell County, N.C. prior to moving to Johnson City in 1964. He was owner and operator of Buladean Exxon and served on the Mitchell County Board of Education and was also a Mitchell County Commissioner.

He was a kind and loving father. He loved his family, friends, neighbors, Snoopy his dog and also the Atlanta Braves. Sam loved his church, Spring Creek Baptist, where he served and was still serving as a deacon. The highlight of his week was the Sunday morning drive from Johnson City to North Carolina for church and Sunday school.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Helen of 68 years; and one son, Ralph Moffitt.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and David Ingram of Johnson City; three grandchildren, Dawn Hicks of Jonesborough, Sammy Moffitt of Elizabethton and Jonathan David Ingram M.D., of Belden, Miss.; a great-granddaughter, Margaret Hicks.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Spring Creek Baptist Church.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church with Bob McCourry and D.C. Byrd officiating. The Bakersville Masonic Lodge #357 AF&AM, of which Mr. Moffitt was a member for 50 years will conduct services.

Interment will be at Garland Parker cemetery in Buladean, N.C.

Active pallbearers will be Willard Moffitt, Howard Butler, Scotty Butler, Jerry Jenkins, Terry Moffitt and Johnny Moffitt.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Hill, Denny Francis, Ricky Butler, Clyde Brinkley, Earl Street, Alvin Ollis, John Culver and the men of the Adult Sunday school class.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Harold Alison and his nurse Connie, Dr. Stanley Vermillion, Dr. Bryan Nerren and Jim Templin RN. His special neighbors, Pete and Phylis Hawlsee; to his kind and loving caregiver, Elizabeth Miller; one very special niece, Ruby Parker; and brother-in-law, Tommy Hill.

Henline-Hughes Funeral Home, Bakersville, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

Brandon Owens, 23, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Brandon Owens, 23, a lifelong resident of Norton, went to be an angel with the Lord on the morning of Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va., with his family at his side.

He was born Dec. 26, 1981 and was a 2000 graduate of John I. Burton High School. His paternal grandfather, James Owens, preceded him in death. He enjoyed his family and friends. Brandon's favorite hobbies were customizing his car, drawing and fishing.

Surviving are his parents, Robert and Roberta Owens, Norton, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Krztena and Jeffrey Davis, Virginia Beach, Va.; his dog, Kane; maternal grandmother, Imogene Calhoun, Norton, Va.; paternal grandmother, Effie Owens, Norton, Va.; maternal grandfather, David Emershaw, Norton, Va.; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, Norton, Va.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Gwen Owens and Rev. Shawn Easterling officiating.

Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the R. Owens Special Account, c/o Wachovia Bank, 701 Park Avenue, Norton, Va. 24273.

Glenn Peterson, 45, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Glenn Peterson, 45, died at his home Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005).

Born in Wyandotte, Mich., he had resided in Kingsport since 1992. Glenn enjoyed cooking and baking. He was a Protestant.

His father, Duane Peterson; and brother, Gordon Peterson preceded him in death.

Surviving are his daughter, Erika Phillips and husband, George, Cedar Lake, Ind.; two grandchildren, Steven and Brittany Phillips; mother, Edie Herron, Kingsport; two brothers, Garry Peterson and wife, Debbie, Gary, Ind. and Greg Peterson, Kingsport; maternal grandmother, Margarete Regenberg, Berlin, Germany; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Fall Branch.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Fall Branch Chapel with Rev. J.W. Depew officiating.

Mr. Peterson's wishes were to be cremated.

Leota Russell, 72, Jonesville, Va.
JONESVILLE, Va. - Leota Russell, 72, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Va., she was a member of Russell Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Va. She retired from Lee Regional Medical Center after 19 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence (Red) Russell; her parents, Earnest and Mossie Johnson; and one brother, Lee Roy (Buddy) Johnson.

Surviving are one granddaughter, Billie Fleenor and two great-granddaughters, Eden Benfield and Katie Fleenor, all of her home; three daughters, Teresa Williams, Gail Mullins and Tamara Anderson, all of Jonesville, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Marcum Carroll of Jonesville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Marshall officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Russell cemetery in Jonesville, Va.

Those wishing to attend graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Sunday to proceed to the cemetery.

Billy Conrad Salyer, 77, Castlewood, Va.
CASTLEWOOD, Va. - Billy Conrad Salyer, 77, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born in Coeburn, Va., and was the son of the late Willie B. and Lona Dingus Salyer. He graduated from Coeburn High School in 1946, Emory and Henry College, Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1951, and Wayne State University, Detroit Mich., with a degree in accounting in 1962. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He retired from General Motors in 1993. He taught at Castlewood High School in 1954-1955.

He was a member of Coeburn Baptist Church, Past Master and Life Member of the Northwood-Ancient Craft Masonic Lodge #551 in Michigan.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Preston G. Salyer and James R. Salyer.

He is survived by his wife, Iva Castle Salyer; one stepson, Kerry Simpson and wife, Darcy of Buford, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Salyer of Coeburn, Va. and Elizabeth G. Dorris and husband, Edward of Hendersonville, Tenn.; one brother-in-law, Bernard Castle and wife, Deborah of Castlewood, Va.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Va. A masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel by St. Paul Masonic Lodge #343 A.F.&A.M.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Ferguson officiating.

Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Lebanon V.F.W. Post #9864.

The family will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Kerry Simpson, Tom Dougherty, Jeffery Castle, Kevin Castle, Arthur Helbert, Larry Salyer, Preston Salyer, and Joe Sanders.

Ronald L. Smith, 59, Candler, N.C.
CANDLER, N.C. - Ronald Lee "Ronnie" Smith, 59, of Indian Trail, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Duke University Medical Center after a long battle with heart disease.

He was a native of Kingsport and lived in Buncombe County most of his life. He was a son of Etta Aesque Smith and the late Charlie Joseph Smith. He was employed by Lowes and was a retired theater manager.

Ronnie was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church and was in the National Guard.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 22 years, Cheryl Moore Smith of Candler; one sister, Susan Frost of Kingsport; one brother, Carl Joseph Smith of Kingsport; his mother in-law and father in-law T.C. and Mary E. Moore of Candler; and several nieces and a nephew.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wells Funeral Homes Inc. & Cremation Services, Canton, N.C.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ridgeway Baptist Church with Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating.

Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Enka.

Betty Jean Wiles, 75, Royal Oak, Mich.
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Betty Jean Wiles, 75, a long time resident of Royal Oak, Mich., died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2005) at Medilodge of Rochester Hills. She was born Nov. 10, 1929 in Kingsport.

Mrs. Wiles was a customer service representative at Wayne Oakland Bank for 20 years, retiring in 1997, and a long time member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Hazel Park.

Surviving are her children, Diane (Michael) Hurd of Royal Oak, Mich., James Wiles of Lake Orion, Darrell (Sara) Wiles of Columbia, Tenn. and Nancy (Kelvin) Underhill of Ortonville; and grandchildren, Michael (Kristen), Michelle, Adam, Kyle, Joshua and Holly.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kinsey-Garrett Funeral Home, 420 S. Lafayette, Royal Oak, Mich.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home in Royal Oak, Mich. with Pastor Richard Yokel of Tabernacle Baptist Church officiating.

Burial will take place at Oakview cemetery in Royal Oak, Mich.

Thomas Woods, 90, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Thomas Franklin Woods, 90, passed away on Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) in Lakeland, Fla., after a brief illness.

Mr. Woods was born in Dawson, Ga. on Sept. 27, 1914. He attended North Georgia College and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He lived most of his life in the Knoxville area and moved to Kingsport in 1996.

Mr. Woods retired from Ironworkers Local Union 384, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Alice Reeca Hyatt Woods; and his daughter Adelene (Sandi) Smith.

He is survived by two sons, Hank Woods and wife Linda of Kingsport and Franklin Woods and wife Angelina of Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter, Reeca Anne Woods Vance and husband Truitt of Crossnore, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Annie Beth McBride of Leesburg, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel, Knoxville.

Services will be held on Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Keith Shown officiating.

Interment will follow in the Lynnhurst Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as the pallbearers.
