Elva Tucker, 94, Church Hill.
Services for Elva Tucker, 94, of Church Hill, who went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday (March 25, 2005), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Church Hill, with the Rev. Gale Flanary and the Rev. Alvin Skelton officiating.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Goshen Valley Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Charles Howerton, John Scism, Roger Deskin, Jeffrey Arnold, Jommy Rowland, Robert Arnold Danny Love and Darrell Arnold.

Honorary bearers will be Ray Marshall, Samuel Collins, Larry Patterson, Garland Arnold, Ronnie Arnold and Billy Christian.

Carl J. Young, 89, Uvalde, Tex.
UVALDE, Tex. - Carl James Young, 89, died Thursday (March 24, 2005) at Brookhaven Manor in Kingsport.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Germany. Mr. Young was owner of White Auto and Furniture Store in Uvalde, Tex. He was an avid horseman.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Will and Mary Young; and two sisters, Frances McKahan and Barbara Newman.

Surviving are his son, James G. Compton of Florida; two brothers, Robert Young, Blountville, and Morris Young, Quincy, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview cemetery in Bowling Green, Ky., with Pastor James W. Ward officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, is serving the Young family.

Dart Alan Absher, 46, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Dart Alan Absher, 46, passed away in Mesa, Ariz., on Wednesday (Oct. 19, 2005).

No services are planned at this time.

Arrangements entrusted to Falconer Funeral Home, Gilbert, Ariz.

John Barbour, 98, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - John Barbour, 98, went home to be with the Lord Friday (Oct. 21, 2005) at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Barbour was a native of St. Paul, Va., but had lived in Mount Carmel since 1945. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Holston Defense.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Herron Barbour; parents, Amos G. and Verda Hawkins Barbour; and 14 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by six daughters, Nell Hale, Betty Wellmaker and Elizabeth Barbour, all of Mount Carmel, Arletha Newton of Gate City, Va., Ruth Drinnon and Ann Lawson of Church Hill; one son, John C. Barbour of Limestone; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Emma Jean Salyers, Joyce Salyers, Minnie Lou Carey, Barbara Helton and Shirley Barbour; three brothers, Wayne Barbour, Amos Barbour, and George Barbour; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.

Services will be conducted Sunday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James Adams and the Rev. Neal Drinnon officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Church Hill Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and friends.

Johnson Funeral Home is serving the Barbour family.

Essie Blackwell Jr., Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Essie Roosevelt Blackwell, Jr., 77, died Thursday (Oct. 20, 2005) at Norton Community Hospital.

Born to the late Essie and Hazel Gardner Blackwell, Sr., he was a UMWA coal miner and retired over-the-road truck driver.

Mr. Blackwell was a veteran of both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of the First Apostolic Faith Church of God in Norton.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harmon Brickey; and brothers and sisters, Harlan Brickey, Coy Brickey, and Christine Brickey.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Blackwell; his children (and spouses), Rev. Wayne (Kathy) Scott, Norton, Va., Jennifer (Mike) Pendleton, Atlanta, Ga., Douglas (Melinda) O'Neill, Canton, Ga., and Marvin O'Neill, Norton, Va.; grandchildren, Michelle Suttle, Douglas Scott, Jessica Sargent, Travis Smith; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Cameron Suttle, Julie and Elizabeth Sargent, Andrew Smith, and Carly Anne Scott; brothers and sisters, Kathleen (Steve) Crace, Lexington, Ky., Cecil (Martha) Brickey, Big Stone Gap, Va., Bernice (Lloyd) Wilson, and Patricia (Gary) Smith, all of Norton. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev.Clifford Bowman and the Rev.Wayne Scott officiating. VFW Post 4301 of Norton will conduct military rites.

Friends and family will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and travel to the cemetery in procession.

Cecil Carroll, 98, Jonesville, Va.
JONESVILLE, Va. - Cecil Carroll, 98, went to be with the Lord Thursday (Oct. 20, 2005) at Bluefield Regional Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va., after a short illness.

Born January 4, 1907, he was one of 10 children of John D. and Martha Hedrick Carroll. Cecil was a longtime faithful member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Jonesville, Va., and after moving to Bluefield, W.Va., became a member and honorary deacon of Riverside Baptist Church in Bramwell, W.Va. A resident of Lee County, Va., for most of his life, he was a retired coal miner.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lyda Aliff Carroll; his second wife, Nahoma Carroll; his parents, John D. and Martha Carroll; two brothers, Don Carroll and Arden Carroll; and three sisters, Rossilee Noe, Eula Carroll, and Jerusha Grable.

Cecil is the beloved dad of Arnetta (Jim) Davidson of Bluefield, W.Va., Nancy (Dudley) Yatabe of Northfield, Ill., Elizabeth (Charles) Burchett of Mentor, Ohio, John Carroll of Jonesville, Va., and Fred (Sandra) Carroll of Abbeville, S.C. He is the grandad of 17 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two brothers, Lester Carroll and Harry Carroll, both of Jonesville, Va.; and two sisters, Geneva Clifton of Bristol, Va., and Berta Johnson of Jonesville, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James Davidson and the Rev. James Meade officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Monday to proceed to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the church or organization of your choice.

Arney-Mullins Funeral Home of Jonesville, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Click, 90, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Beatrice J. Click, 90, died Friday (Oct. 21, 2005) at Wexford House.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Elsie Frost Dean, 78, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Elsie Beatrice Castle Frost Dean, 78, went to be with the Lord Friday (Oct. 21, 2005) at her residence.

Born in Hancock County, she came to Kingsport in 1944. She was employed at Tennessee Eastman Company, J.P. Stevens Company and retired from Holston Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Dean was a member of Eastern Star Chaper 198.

She was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church but attended Pleasant View Baptist Church for over 45 years.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Odell Frost; and second husband, William "Bill" Dean; her parents, William Castle and Stella Burchette Castle; stepson, Don Dean; and one brother, James "Jim" Robert Castle.

Surviving are three daughters, Gilda Edith Fields, Mount Carmel, Alanne Gaye Ferrell and Scarlot Odette Frost, both of Kingsport; son, Shawn Odell Frost, Kingsport; stepdaughter, Patricia Wadell, Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Nina Stapleton, Dandridge; also several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Shirley Dean, 68, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Shirley Rankin Dean, 68, went to be with the Lord early Friday morning (Oct. 21, 2005) after a short illness.

She was born in Washington County, Va. (Bristol) and moved to Kingsport in 1972. Shirley retired from Kingsport Press with over 14 years of service.

She was of the baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Rankin and Orpha Smith Rankin; one sister and two brothers.

Surviving are her husband Charlie W. Dean, of the home; son, Perry Davidson and wife Amy, Kingsport; stepdaughter, Janet Fields and husband Donnie of Nickelsville, Va.; stepsons, Clifford Dean and wife Faith and Tony Dean, both of Nickelsville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Rankin and wife Ann, Kingsport; also several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. today with Rev. Guy Elam officiating.

Music will be provided by Lee Smith Singers.

Graveside services will be conducted at Holston View cemetery on Sunday at 1 p.m. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12 noon.

Pallbearers will be Clifford Dean, Tony Dean, Timothy Parker, Adam Fields, Donnie Fields, Gary McMurray, Rick McMurray and Mack Edwards serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bristol Hospice House, 280 Steel Road, Bristol, Tenn. 37620.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Mary L. Easterling, 82, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Graveside services for Mary L. (Gillenwater) Easterling, 82, who went to be with the Lord early Thursday morning (Oct. 20, 2005), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Addington Frame Church cemetery in Nickelsville, Va. (Midway community). Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m..

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Nina Rhea Bean Gibbons, 87, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Nina Rhea Bean Gibbons, 87, went to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon (Oct. 20, 2005) at her residence following a brief illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County. She was a member for over 50 years of Mount Zion Union Church where she was very active teaching Sunday school.

She was preceded in death by her parents, DeWitt and Lena Derrick Bean; her sister, Jackie Bentley; a brother, Ben Bean.

She was such a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years on Sept. 20, John R. Gibbons; three sons, Larry Gibbons and his wife, Edna of Church Hill, Bob Gibbons and his wife, Nancy of Corryton, Tenn., Leon Gibbons and his wife, Barbara of Church Hill; four grandchildren, Denise Barrett and her husband Roger, Stacey Gibbons, Salena Torres and husband, Eli, Chris Gibbons and his wife Cassandra; six great-grandchildren; two step-granddaughters, Shannon Scott and Teshia Clapp; a brother, Burel Bean and his wife, Aunette of Pensacola, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill or anytime at the residence, 387 Payne Ridge Road, Church Hill.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Evangelist Pat Hammond, the Rev. Alvin Skelton and the Rev. Lee L. Knowles officiating.

Music will be provided by Headed for Heaven.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elm Springs Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stacey Gibbons, Chris Gibbons, Lowell Bean, Kermit Bentley, Scott Rutledge, Steve Ketron, Jody Newland and Wayne Larkins.

Honorary pallbearers will be children from the community that were influenced by Nina.

Harry R. Hillman, 70, Fall Branch.
FALL BRANCH - Harry R. Hillman, 70, a devoted husband, dad, papper, brother and friend went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Oct. 20, 2005).

He was born March 13, 1935 in Nickelsville, Va., to the late Ezra E. Hillman and Lois Wampler Hillman. Mr. Hillman retired from the USAF National Guard after more than 30 years service.

He worked for Tennessee Eastman Company, retiring in 1995 with more than 39 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Earnest Hillman; great-grandson, Ethan Robert Lay.

He leaves to mourn him, his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy Collins Hillman; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Glen Bledsoe, Greensboro, N.C., Jacqueline and Todd Carver, Partlow, Va., Michelle and Jeff Douglas, Fall Branch; seven grandchildren, Kevin and Kristen Bledsoe, Joshua, Matthew and Hunter Carver, Taylor and Raven Douglas; a brother and his wife, Max and Gladys Hillman, Richmond, Va.; sisters and their husbands, Phyllis and Tommy Cassell, Gate City, Va., Karen and Howard Dockery, Nickelsville, Va., Lyndell and Joe Greear, Weber City, Va.; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Clyde and Ruth Collins, Paul and Ruth Collins, all of Gate City, Va., Howard and Imogene Collins, Fred and Eva Collins, all of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Jack Dixon.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronald Abbott officiating.

Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Holston View cemetery conducted by American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Gate City Post No. 265.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Bledsoe, Joshua Carver, Matthew Carver, Jeff Cassell, Mike Cassell and Duane Collins.

Audrey Howington, 74, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mrs. Audrey Faye Simpson Howington, 74, went to be with the Lord on Friday (Oct. 21, 2005) at Indian Path Medical Center.

Mrs. Howington was born in Sullivan County on Aug. 11, 1931 and was the daughter of the late Elder Elbert K. and Myrtle Spivey Simpson.

She was a member of Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband of 56 years, Elder A.D. Howington, Kingsport; daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Larry Jones, Kingsport; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Tina Howington, Dennis and Maggie Howington and Clayton Howington, all of Kingsport; grandsons, Larry Jones, Jr. and Wes Howington; step-granddaughters, Christy Reynolds, Sheena Vaughn and Josey Smith; step great-grandson, Codie Reynolds; several nieces and nephews, church family and a multitude of friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Elder John Bowling, Elder Paul Strong and Elder Allen Hensley officiating.

The Bowling Singers will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Walnut Chapel cemetery in East Carter's Valley.

The family will be meeting at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m., Monday to go in procession to the graveside service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

The family of Mrs. Howington wishes to say a very special thank you to the staff of the Kingsport Dialysis Center and to the nurses and doctors at Indian Path Medical Center.
