Robert Edward Fields Sr., 70, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Services for Robert Edward Fields, Sr. 70, of Gate City, who went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2006), will be held at 6 p.m. today at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.

Music will be by Durham's Quartet.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the funeral home chapel or you may call anytime at the residence, Rt. 2 Box 455H, Gate City.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is serving the Fields family.

Ethel M. Fletcher, 91, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Ethel M. Fletcher, 91, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006) at the Indian Path Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport is serving the Fletcher family.

Arlie D. Hartley, 73, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Arlie D. Hartley, 73, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 24, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was retired from AFG Industries, was a Free and Accepted Mason belonging to a Lodge in Virginia, and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force. He loved playing his guitar and guitar music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stirl and Edith Hartley; brother, J.K. Hartley; and stepson, Thomas Meade.

He is survived by his daughter, Edye Dunn and husband, Mike of Mount Carmel; son, Joe Hartley and wife, Angie of Kingston; grandchildren, Nicholas Sampson, Michaela Dunn, Blake Hartley, Alex Hartley and Meg Hartley; stepgrandchildren, Shawne, Heather and Jordan Meade of Kingsport; niece, Kristie Hardin and husband, John of Summerville, S.C.; special cousin, Elaine Greene and husband, Earl.

The family will receive friends anytime at the residence of Jeane Hartley, 313 Grandview Street, Church Hill.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Lawson Cemetery.

Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon Hutson, 48, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Sharon Hutson, 48 passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was the wife of Dr. Les Hutson, Director of Music Ministries at First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by ther mother, Sarah Fletcher and father, Donald W. Schalk.

Sharon is survived by her husband Les Hutson; her children, Tessa, Conner, Elena, Christian, Katy Norman, Holly Norman; and stepson, Mark Hutson.

A musical celebration of Sharon's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Church Circle, Kingsport.

Sharon's love for contemporary music and exuberant personality inspired everyone who came in contact with her. She will be missed by everyone.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorial contributions to M.D. Anderson Brain and Spine research, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston Tex. 77030.

Interment was held on Jan. 22, 2006 at the Maple Hill cemetery in Huntsville, Ala.

Ralph Lane, 49, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Ralph Lane, 49, entered into rest Thursday (Jan. 26, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Gate City Funeral Home.

Linda R. Purkey, 58, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Linda R. Purkey, 58, went to be with the Lord Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mrs. Purkey was a member of Freedom Independent Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Purkey; and one son, Bobby Purkey both of Church Hill; one grandson, Matthew R. Purkey of Kingsport; three sisters, Pat Francis and husband, Robert of Columbus, Ga., Kay Land and husband, Harley, Judy Swanson and husband, Stacy both of Lenoir, N.C.; two brothers, John Flaningan and wife, Cindy, and Tim Flaningan and wife, Evelene both of Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Andy Sensabaugh officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Church Hill Memory Gardens.

John Harvey Roberts, 83, Bristol, Va.
BRISTOL, Va. - John Harvey Roberts (Ret. USAF), 83, died Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006) at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.

He was born in Saltville, Va., and was the son of the late John A. and Cleo French Roberts, and moved to Bristol in 1966. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of service and worked 12 years as an inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was an avid reader, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Emory and Henry football fan.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by sisters, Virginia Ratcliff, Mary Lester and Evelyn Eller; brothers, James and Marvin Roberts.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joyce Roberts; a daughter, Karen Corbett and her husband Lea of Johnson City; two sons, Gary Roberts and his wife, Linda, of Bristol, Tenn., and Commander John W. Roberts, (Ret. USN) and his wife, Brenda, of Hilliard, Ohio; four grandchildren, Matt, Megan, April and Jason Roberts and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of the Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Rev. Amy Holmes officiating.

The committal service and interment will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in the National cemetery at Mountain Home. Military rites will be presented by the V.F.W. Post 6975 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Trinity United Methodist Church, 320 Carter Street, Bristol, Va. 24201.

Mr. Roberts and his family are in the care of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory, Bristol, Tenn.

John "Pap" Self, 92, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - John Melven Self (Pap), 92, of Rogersville, died Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2006) peacefully with heart failure.

He was born August 12, 1913. Melvin was a member of Persia United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and carpenter like our Lord Jesus Christ. Pap, a third generation carpenter, helped build or remodel some of the historic buildings in Rogersville and the local area. He was a special friend to the many children and young people who grew up in the Persia Community. They spent many hours working on the farm with Pap.

Pap was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Virginia; parents, William Franklin and Mollie; sister, Ruth; brother, Charles; a son, Delbert (Doc); and granddaughter, Toni Ann Self.

Survivors are sons, Robert (Bob) Self and Ron W. Self and wife, Aleda; grandchildren, Kay Self and Joe Williams, Bobby Self and James Ronald (J.R.) Self, all of Rogersville, Ricky and Kathy Self of Morristown; several great-grandchildren; brother, Sam of Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Colboch-Price Funeral Home.

Services will be held at Persia United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday with the body lying in state one hour before the services. Rev. Fred Dimond and Carl Jones will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Persia United Methodist Church.

Colboch-Price Funeral Home in Rogersville is in charge of the arrangements.

Omega Jean Smith, 78, of Duffield, Va.
Committal services for Omega Jean Smith, 78, of Duffield, Va., who went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Fraley cemetery in Pattonsville. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. for procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Arwood, Bill Lane, Mike Payne, Roger Evans, Lloyd Love, and Jimmy Bishop.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Timothy Smith, Billy Minton, Dennis Stanley, and area ministers.

The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph K. "Joey" Taylor, 30, Hiltons, Va.
Graveside services for Joseph Keith "Joey" Taylor, 30, Hiltons, Va., who passed away Monday (Jan. 23, 2006), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the family cemetery in Hiltons. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Trevor Keller, Joey Dean, Harrison Pippin, Adam Gardner, Bo Miller, Dewayne Cox.

Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Thrower, 87, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Hazel Virginia Wolfe Thrower, 87, died Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2006) at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Thrower was born January 21, 1919 in Lebanon, Va., and was the daughter of the late Joseph Ezra Wolfe and Virginia Lindamood Purnell Meade Godsey.

She attended Sullins College. During World War II she worked for the Department of the Navy.

Mrs. Thrower was a member of Norton Presbyterian Church and the Boone Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was known for her great passion for gardening and received honors for her work with the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and the VFGC Nature Camp. Mrs. Thrower served as president of VFGC and was presented with The Governor's Award as State Conservationist of the Year on behalf of the Virginia Wildlife Federation. She was a charter member of the Green Thumb Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her only sister, Jean Elizabeth Wolfe Fields, of Chattanooga, Tenn. On August 31, 1941 she married Monroe Bardin Thrower, Sr., who preceded her in death January 24, 2000.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter, Monroe Bardin Thrower, Jr., and his wife, Eleanor House Thrower of Norton, Va., John Meade Thrower and his wife, Kimberly Clark Thrower of Austin, Tex., Susan Virginia Thrower Cale and her husband, William F. Cale of Harrisonburg, Va.; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Alison Thrower Coberly and her husband, Noah Blaine Coberly, Monroe Bardin Thrower, III and his wife Lisa Dewberry Thrower, Patrick Meade Thrower, Katherine Marie Thrower, John Franklin Cale, Mary Virginia Cale, Monroe Blake Thrower, and Kaitlyn Meade Thrower; three great-grandsons, William Ross Coberly, Hume Patrick Coberly, and James Duncan Coberly.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home.

Services will be 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mike Porter Dr. Miller Liston officiating.

Graveside committal services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends may meet 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home to travel in procession to the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Norma Lea Toni, 74, Church Hill.
Graveside services for Norma Lea Longworth Toni, 74, of Church Hill, who went to be with the Lord on Monday evening (Jan. 23, 2006), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Church Hill Memory Gardens with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Rev. James T. Adcox, 70, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Rev. James T. Adcox, 70, died at 8:15 p.m. Monday at his home.

Rev. Adcox was a minister for 37 years in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, most of which was served in the Tri-Cities area.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Adcox; two brothers, Clarence Adcox and John Adcox; and three sisters, Thelma Mowen, Myrtle Scott and Josie Wilson.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Adcox, Kingsport; three children, James Mark Adcox, Gray, Sherry L. Cross, Fond Du Lac, Wis., and John Matthew Adcox and wife, Diane, Gray; three grandchildren, Donald Jason Carter, John Mark Carter, and Emma Grace Adcox; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Nicole Carter, Donald Christopher Carter, and Angela Lynn Carter; one sister, Pauline Anderson, Knoxville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the church with Aaron Pierce, Gale Flanary, Paul Marchbanks and Maurice Lay officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Stamper, Stanley Hite, Paul Chapman, Lynn Musick, John Weaver, Danny Scott, Jason Carter, and Brent Davis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of one's choice.

William "Kinley" Bowlin, 70, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - William McKinley "Kinley" Bowlin, 70, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (Jan. 24, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital following an extended illness.

He was a member of Sulfur Springs Baptist Church and was retired from Hawkins County Farmers Co-Op after 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Williams and Susan Bowlin; brothers, Arthur Bowlin, Hugh Bowlin, and Kyle Bowlin; and sisters, Kitty Alvis and Eula Bowlin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Alma Bowlin of the home; daughter, Dinah Burns of Rogersville; sons, Jessie Bowlin of the home, Jimmy Bowlin of Rogersville, and Randall Bowlin of Greeneville; two grandchildren, Heather Burns and Sarah Bloomer; brother, Clay Bowlin of Rogersville; sister, Lula Combs of Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Colboch-Price Funeral Home.

Services will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Winstead officiating.

Interment will follow in the Burdine Cemetery.
