Virgil H. Tunnell
Died: 12/13/2000
KINGSPORT -- Virgil H. Tunnell, age 78, Kingsport, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in the Indian Path Medical Center following a period of declining health.

He was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Van Hill. He attended the Glenwood Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, entering the serving May 19, 1943. He served with the U.S. Navy on D-day during the invasion of Normandy. He was a life-long member of the VFW and retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company as an electrician. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Byrd and Mae Luster Tunnell; a sister, Opal Jones; and a great-grandson, James (RC) Hurd.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Nancy Tunnell of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Robert Blevins and Margaret and Ben Larkin, all of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Beverly Fricke, David Bowles, Rick Hurd and Michelle Morin; and seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 6 - 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, with the funeral service following visitation at 7:30 p.m. in East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Jim Lindsey and Carl Kelleher officiating. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Garden of Apostle’s in the East Lawn Memorial Park with military honors by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post 3382.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Center of Upper East Tennessee, PO Box 3301, Kingsport, TN 37664.

Irene Byington
Died: 12/15/2000
IRENE BYINGTON CHURCH HILL -- Irene Byington, age 77, Church Hill, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000.

She gad lived all her life in Hawkins County and was a member of Christians Bend Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kelly and Suzie Christian; a brother, Kelly Christian Jr.; three sisters, Dallas Christian, Oma Henry and Dollie Christian.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Johnny Byington of the home; a daughter, Joana Byington, Church Hill; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Mary Byington, Rogersville, Kelly and Maryland Byington, Surgoinsville, and Ricky Byington, Church Hill; two grandchildren, Chris Byington and Crystal Cookenour; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Byington and Adam Cookenour; three sisters, Elsie Amyx, Kingsport, Geneva Sloan, Church Hill, and Helen Russell, Rogersville; a brother, William Christian, Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 6 - 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill, and any time at the residence, 1695 Christians Bend Road.

Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. William Truman officiating.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the Christians Bend Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Travis Christian, Keith Christian, Brian Cookenour, Randy Henry, Jack Amyx and Timmy Russell.

Pearl M. Bell
Died: 12/16/2000
CHURCH HILL -- Pearl Maxine Bell, age 73, Church Hill, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at her residence.

She was a member of Grassy Springs Baptist Church and was employed at Our House Restaurant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Mattie Lawson; grandchild, Timothy Sabin McPeek; three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by a son, Michael Bell, Church Hill; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Linda) Phillippie, Bluff City, and Mrs. David (Patsy) McPeek Clark, Blountville; three grandchildren, Anthony McPeek, Church Hill, Robbie Phillippie, Fall Branch, and Rebecca Perry, Piney Flatts; two great-grandchildren, Melody Phillippie and Matthew Phillippie, both of Fall Branch; a sister, June Lawson Mabe, Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with Rev. Glen Bradley officiating. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Highland Cemetery.

Hallie M. Barner Sr.
Died: 12/15/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Hallie Millard Barner Sr., age 71, Rogersville, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Wellmont Hawkins County Hospital, following an extended illness.

He currently resided at Heritage Manor of Rogersville where he was loved and cared for. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. and served in the Korean War. He was a devoted husband, dad, papaw and friend. Most importantly, he was a born again Christian. He was saved at the age of 10 and had devoted many years of his life to serving the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Georgia Lawson Barner; and a grandson, Dennis Carl Barner.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Margaret Ferrell Barner; a son and daughter-in-law, Hallie (Jr.) and Lois Barner, Rogersville; and two loving grandchildren, Samantha Barner and Travis Barner; three sisters, Lois Slater, Louella Alvis and Jean Alvis, all of Rogersville; and four brothers, M.C. Barner, Elmo Barner, Lincoln Barner, all of Rogersville, and Harold Barner, Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, and any time at his son’s residence, 179 Austin Mill Road, Rogersville. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. with Revs. Robert Weems and Jerry Manis officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Travis Barner, grandson, will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Gladson Cemetery, with Hawkins County Color Guard conducting full military honors.

Arrangements are under direction of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.

James H. Long
Died: 12/17/2000
MORRISTOWN -- James Henry (Jim) Long, age 77, Morristown, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at his residence.

He was a life-long carpenter and a member of West View Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Amanda Pearl Long; and two infant sisters.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, James and Virginia Long, Morristown, Jerry Dale and Sharon Long, Bulls Gap, David C. and Brenda Long, Mike and Barbara Long, all of Morristown; grandchildren, Lisa and James Morgan, Jody Long, Angie Long, Traci Long and Stacie Long; great-grandchildren, Veactoria Winstead, Mickaela Rose Whitt, Matthew Aaron Long Morgan and Nicholas James Long Morgan; sisters, Clara Young, Wichita Falls, TX, and Daisy Grammar, Carbondale, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Westview Baptist Church with Revs. Hubert Bunch, Elmer Lampkin and Rick Dodson officiating.

The family will receive friends 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Westside Chapel Funeral Home.

Crochie S. Sells
Died: 12/19/2000
MORRISTOWN -- Crochie Sliger Sells, age 70, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Heritage Center, Morristown.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Morristown.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Glover and John Sells; parents, Edward Sliger and Amanda Carpenter Sliger; brothers, Eddie and Arthur Sliger; and a sister, Fannie Collins.

She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Glover, Rockwood; sisters, Mary Hankle, Johnson City, Lucy Lewis, Morristown, Bessie Mae Livesay, Bean Station; a special niece, Margaret Jack Sliger; and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Mayes Mortuary with Revs. Tom Dodge and Mark Burford officiating. Interment will be in Big Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at the mortuary.

Mildred K. McKenzie
Died: 12/20/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Mildred Kinkead McKenzie, age 84, Rogersville, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Church Hill Healthcare and Rehab Center.

She was a member of the Rogersville United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Tyler McKenzie in 1974; and parents, Edward and Lyda Seaver Kinkead.

She is survived by two sons, Phillip R. McKenzie, Lilburn, GA, and Morris "Eddie" and wife Corine McKenzie, Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Phillip Ray McKenzie Jr., Tucker, GA, Susan Jeanette Stebbins, Lawrenceville, GA, Mary Tyler Casey, Austin, TX, and Mark McKenzie, Houston, TX; a great-grandson, Jack Casey, Austin, TX; two sisters, Val Doris Kinkead and Christine Anderson, both of Church Hill.

Calling hours will be 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at McKinney Cemetery, Rogersville, with Rev. Charles C. Harrison officiating.

A. J. Richards
Died: 12/19/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- A.J. Richards, age 79, Rogersville, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Wellmont Hawkins County Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was a member of the Latter Day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jearline Richards; father John Henry Richards; mother, Ethel Leroy Richards; step-mother, Reddie Richards; two granddaughters, Mary Louise Richards and Kathey Jearline Lawson; three sisters, Lennie Marie Richards, Jinnie Richards and Mattie Mae Gilliam; and a brother, Sgt. James Paul Richards.

He is survived by ten children, Junior Wayne Hamonds, Mosheim, Coy Douglas Richards, Dekalb, IL, Glen Henry Richards, Surgoinsville, Linda Kay Lawson, Rogersville, Fred Monroe Richards, Morgantown, KY, Nina Jean Carnine, Henderson, KY, Gary Zane Richards, Rogersville, Dana Sue Cutshaw, Henderson, KY, Connie Pearson, Rogersville, and Wanda Faye Embry, Rogersville; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Johnny Richards, Kingsport, Bob Richards of Indiana, Lynnburg Richards, Doug Richards and George Richards, all of Rogersville; seven sisters, Elizabeth Collier, Nell Fawbush, Mollie Albright and Mary Gilliam, all of Rogersville, Dorothy Gorbea, St. Clair, Alice Mayes and Carolyn Ball, both of Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home and any time at the residence of Gary Richards, 218 Kinley Lane, Rogersville. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Colboch-Price Chapel with Revs. Jim Trent, J.W. Richards, Tom Lawson, and Brother Glen Richards officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
