BALES, EDWARD C. (TOBY), age 56, of Morristown, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 1998, at his residence. He was an electrician with Massey Electric Co. of Kingsport and a member of Central Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his father, Tobe Bales, and daughter, Karen Bales. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Jackie) Bales; mother, Laura Bales of Morristown; daughter, Jan Bales Sweet and husband, Randall, of Jefferson City; sons, Doug Bales and wife, Nicole of Jefferson City, Jeff Bales and wife, Misty of Morristown; six grandchildren; sister, Patricia Haag of Rockwood; brother, Greg Bales of Talbott; step-daughter, Carrie Parvin of Morristown; step-son, Mike Steel of Hartford; two step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday, 8 p.m., at Westside Chapel with Rev. Hubert Bunch and Rev. Donnie Sizemore officiating. Graveside services will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. in the Pleasant View Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. before the services. Westside Chapel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

COLLINS, CARRIE MAE PATE, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:6. Her favorite scripture which she lived by as she faced each day, went home to rejoice throughout eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 30, 1998, at the age of 89. Ms. Collins was a member of Mouth of Richland Baptist Church in Blaine, where she taught Sunday School for over 60 years. She was a retired school teacher and had worked at the Grainger County office on aging for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Dora Pate; brothers, Paul and Roy Pate; son-in-law, James Walker. Survivors are, daughter, Jane Walker; grandchildren, Darrall and Edie Walker, David and Angie Walker, and Deanna and Tony Wiser; great-grandchildren, Mandi, Carrie, and Whitney Walker and Jacob and Alex Wiser; sisters-in-law, Hazel Pate and Hattie Mae Pate; special nieces, Mary Varnell, Billie Pate, Anna Lynn Walker and Nancy Hood; special nephew, Kenneth Pate. Special thanks to Dr. Robert Fehr, whom she loved dearly, and his staff. To nurse Donna Slagle and other Housecall Home Healthcare employees. Funeral services will be Friday, January 1, 1999, at 8 p.m. at The Mouth of Richland Baptist Church with Rev. Darrall Walker officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be Saturday, January 2 at 11 a.m. at the Mouth of Richland Cemetery. BELCHER, DORA, age 80, of Sneedville, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 1998 at the Hancock Manor Nursing Home in Sneedville. She was a member of Fox Branch Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laymon Belcher; son, Junior Belcher; parents, Joe and Flora Livesay; brothers, Lewis and Fred Livesay. Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Clarence and Ola Jean Belcher of Sneedville; daughters, Phyllis Marie Brooks of Pigeon Forge, TN., Bonnie Wilson of Greenville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Pat Wilson, Tracy Wilson and Michael Belcher; six great-grandchildren; brother, Dan Livesay of Kingsport, TN. DAVIS, REV. DR. ERNEST JR., a twenty-three year, Poughkeepsie resident, died Monday, December 28, 1998 at Vassar Hospital. At the time of his death he was both the Pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Dover Plains, New York and the Senior Chaplain at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, New York. He previously worked for the City of Poughkeepsie as the E.M.O/M.B.E. Officer. He was born in Morristown, Tennessee on September 16, 1937 to the Rev. Ernest W. Davis and Freedie Davis who predeceased him. He received his early education in Morristown schools, under graduate degrees from Newark State College and Andover Newton Theological School, and his Doctor of Divinity from Drew University. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a participant in the annual Dutchess Interfaith Council music festival, member of the Dutchess County African American Clergy Association, the Dutchess County Clergy Association, the Gospel Music Workshop of America, the Drew University Theological School Executive Board, and Past Moderator and member of the American Baptist Association. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Riley Davis, at home; three sons, Mr. E. Scott Davis of Laurel, Maryland, Mr. Jason Davis of Morristown, New Jersey, Mr. Christopher Davis of Poughkeepsie; two daughters, Mrs. Gay Williams of Laurel, Maryland, and Mrs. Joy Williams of Oxon Hill, Maryland; two step-sons, Mr. David Riley of Richmond, Virginia and Mr. Stephen Riley of Bronxville, New York; and one step-daughter, Mrs. Monica Riley Harris of Lewisville, Texas. Other survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Isabelle Treece, Mrs. Flora Ann Nance, Mrs. Barbara Treece, Rev. Linda Treece and Mrs. Cleo Harris and four brothers, Rev. Albert Davis, Mr. David Davis, and Mr. George Davis of Morristown, Tennessee and Rev. Billy Ray Davis of Newport, Tennessee; twelve grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, daughters and sons-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. One aunt, Mrs. Henrietta Fanney, of Thorn Hill, Tennessee, Two brothers, Clarence and John, died previously. Arrangements are being handled by the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains, New York. Calling hours are from 10:30 to 12 on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Beulah Baptist Church, Catharine St., Poughkeepsie with the service immediately following. Rev. Jesse V. Bottoms will be officiating with Rev. Albert Davis delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in the Mausoleum at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery following the service. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Association or the Vassar Hospital Building Fund. Hufcut Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Local arrangements by Dockery Funeral Home.

OVERHOLT, BILL S., age 79, of Mohawk, passed way December 31, 1998 at Takoma Adventist Hospital .He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Margaret Overholt. Survivors: wife, Jean Overholt of Mohawk; children, Kenny (Dorothy) Overholt of Mohawk, Jerry (Linda) Overholt of Mosheim, Susan Overholt of Mohawk; brother, Dale (Bettye) Overholt of Morristown; special friend Glen Cutshaw of Greeneville; grandchildren, Vince (Merry) Overholt of Hendersonville, N.C., Vanessa (Richie) Green of White Pine, Jon Overholt of Mosheim, Russell Overholt of Mosheim, Jeff (Jody) Melton of Mohawk; great-grandchildren, Shannon and Erin Overholt, Adam and Hannah Green, Kirsten and Will Melton; several nieces and nephews. Services will be 8 p.m. Friday at Mayes Mortuary with Rev. Joe Frazier officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hamblen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Mayes Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

LONG, VADA IRENE, age 69, of Route 2, Rutledge, passed away Dec. 30. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Smith Funeral Home in Rutledge.

MALLICOAT, CLARENCE, age 58, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998. The Mooresburg Chapel of Stubblefield Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MOTTE, CHARLES ALTON, age 60, of Talbott, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 1998. A member of New Bethel Baptist Church of Warrior, Alabama. A member of the Home Builders Association of Morristown. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survived by wife, Lucy Hicks Motte, Talbott; son, Steven Motte, Talbott; and daughter, Patricia Huffman, Jonesborough, Tenn.; brothers, Elmer and Douglass Motte, Birmingham, Ala.; sisters, Irene Sloan and Eulalia Weaver, Birmingham, Ala., and Vizella Barnette. Funeral services Friday, 8:00 p.m., Jan. 1, 1999 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jerry Colbert officiating. Family and friends will meet 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Jefferson Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. interment service. Family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday prior to the funeral service. SLOAN, MRS. VIOLA MAE SMILEY, age 75, of White Pine, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Jefferson County Nursing Home after a long illness. Widow of the late Rev. Burl H. Smiley and William (Bill) Sloan. Member of Leadvale Baptist Church. Survived by son, Eugene Smiley of Bybee. Grandsons and wives Tim and Judy Smiley of White Pine, Mike and LeAnne Smiley of Cleveland. Four great grandsons, Jake Smiley, Noah Smiley, Brandon Smiley and Zack Foster Smiley. Sisters, Elvie Wilburn of Madisonville and Lorena Moser of Sweetwater. Several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Friday evening, Jan. 1, 1999 at Farrars White Pine Chapel with Rev. Bud Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Jan. 2, 1999 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Jefferson City. Farrars of White Pine in charge of arrangements.

COLLINS, HALL, age 71, of Bean Station, passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 1998. He was a member of Rock Haven Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Lou; parents, Blue and Leary Collins and step-son, James Hayes. Survivors: sons, Larry, Terry and Buddy Collins, all of Bean Station; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda Wolfe Cope and Johnny, Bean Station, Penny Morgan and Mike, Rutledge; eight grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; sister, Ivy Collins, Morristown. Funeral services 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Mooresburg Chapel of Stubblefield Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Stubblefield and Rev. Gary Morgan officiating. Family and friends will meet for interment 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Bean Station Baptist Church Cemetery. FARMER, VIRGINIA OPAL, 74, of Morristown, died Tuesday, December 22, 1998, at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare. She was preceded in death by her parents, McKinley and Leona Carpenter; and brothers, Lloyd and Grant Carpenter. Mrs. Farmer was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Linda Farmer, and Wade and Dianne Farmer, all of Morristown; brothers, Ben Carpenter of Bean Station, Allen Carpenter of Morristown, and Kyle Carpenter of Ohio; sisters, Sue Houston of Ohio, and Maude Trent of Morristown; one grandson, Jeffrey Farmer. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Allen Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jeffrey Nave officiating. Interment will follow in Bethesda Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KEY, BETTY ANN, of Bibles Chapel Road, Midway, TN. 37809, born July 23, 1935, in Greeneville, TN., passed away Monday evening, Dec. 21, 1998 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Knoxville. She was a retired employee of BASF. The family received friends 6-9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Kiser Funeral Home and will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Wednesday evening at Bibles Chapel Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at Bibles Chapel Baptist Church, Midway, TN. Thursday, December 24, 1998, 11:00 a.m. Entombment at GreeneLawn Mausoleum. Kiser Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
