STANFILL, MAZIE, age 91, of 508 Sulphur Springs, Rd., passed away early this morning at her home. Arrangements are incomplete, to be announced later by Westside Chapel Funeral Home.

TURK, IVA FAIN, age 104, of New Market, passed away Monday, May 31, 1999 at Jefferson City Health and Rehab Center. She was a member of Youngs Memorial AME Zion Church. Funeral service will be announced by Fielden Funeral Home, New Market.

COURTNEY, MRS. LORRAINE P., age 76, of Johnson City, died Thursday, June 3, 1999 in NHC Healthcare following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Courtney was born in Russellville, Tenn., and spent her early life until marriage in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was a resident of Greenville, S. C. for 28 years. She was a daughter of the late Robert W. and Dessie Estes Parrish. Mrs. Courtney had served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, where she attended the Christian Homemakers Sunday School class. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Courtney was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include her husband, George Lloyd Courtney; three sons, Robert J. Courtney, Clover, S.C., Ralph E. Courtney, Aiken, S.C. and Ronald L. Courtney, Dallas, N.C.; one daughter, Janet Elaine Canaday, Johnson City, Tenn.; two sisters, Marilyn P. Shellenberg, Corning, Iowa and Barbara P. Paez, Council Bluffs, Iowa; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Russellville, Tenn. Rev. R. Willard Warfield will officiate. Pallbearers will be selected from family members and friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and other hours at the residence. Morris-Baker, Johnson City is in charge of arrangements.

HELTON, MARY ELIZABETH, 86, passed away early Thursday morning, June 3, 1999. She was a member of Buffalo Trail Baptist Church. Mrs. Helton was a native of Morristown, the daughter of the late Clarence and Jessie Rippetoe. Preceded in death by her husband, William H. Helton; brothers, Herbert, Charles, Wayland and John Rippetoe; sisters, Mildred Graves and Emily Rippetoe. Survivors: son, William H. Helton, Jr.; daughters, Mrs. Frank (Doris) Keister, Mrs. Leonard (Wanda) Diamond and Mrs. Coy Lynn (Helen) Trent; grandchildren, Sharon Guinn, Bobby and Perry Helton, Traci Martin and Brian Trent, all of Morristown, and Laura Fitzgerald of Gray, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Emily Johnson and Sidney Helton; two sisters, Louise Marsh, Morristown and Margaret Floyd, Rogersville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 10 a.m. Saturday at Stetzer’s Chapel with Dr. Kenyn Cureton and Rev. Ron Jones officiating. Interment in Jarnagin Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Stetzer Funeral Home in Morristown. Stetzer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PINKNEY, MARIE B., age 82, of Heritage Nursing Home, passed away early Wednesday morning at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lucille Ray Bowditch; husband, Rev. James Pinkney and daughter, Joyce Pinkney. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Survivors: grandchildren, James Edward Pinkney, Atlanta, Ga., Chotal Nicole Pinkney, Morristown, Maria Alicia Pinkney, Jefferson City; sister, Savannah Wilson, Heritage Nursing Home; 5 great-grandchildren, Jordan Tyler Pinkney, Christopher Charles Pinkney, Aretha Nicole Pinkney, Caitlin Joy Pinkney and Kaley Lachia Neal; 7 nieces; 6 nephews; 11 great-nieces; 3 great-nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Rev. Carl Bragg, Rev. Thomas Phillips and Elder Ventrus Norfolk officiating. Interment will follow in City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of services at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. The family will also receive friends at the home of Chotal Pinkney, 300 Lincoln Ave., B-3. Westside Chapel Funeral Home, Morristown, is in charge of arrangements.

RHYNE, MAUDE J., age 82, of Clinton, passed away June 2, 1999 at Little Creek Sanitarium in Knoxville. She was a longtime member of Zion Baptist Church and an honorary member of Gospel Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lester Rhyne; sisters, Ruth Overton and Dora Herrell and parents, James F. and Flora Johnson Jennings. Survivors: daughters, Linda Cook, Morristown, Louise and husband Larry Jones, Kingston; sons, Carl E. and wife Jean Rhyne, Powell and Jerry L. and wife Sherry Rhyne, Hendersonville; sisters, Alberta Amerine, Clinton, Pearl Foust, Claxton and Mable Vandergriff, Birmingham, Ala.; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Deborah Shrader, Duane Rhyne, Donna Inners, Tammy Belcher, De Anna Cook, Laura Scheffer, Lloyd Jones, Jonathan and Joey Rhyne and Brandon and Brittney Haston; great-grandchildren, Kristin Shrader, Colin Rhyne, Jared Belcher, Rebekah Belcher, Leah Belcher, Benjamin Inners, Jeremiah Haston and Regan Haston; special friend and care giver, Mary Lou Wiese of Clinton. Funeral services 3 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Holley Gamble Chapel with Rev. Bill Roop officiating. Interment following funeral at Zion Cemetery in Claxton Community. Family will receive friends 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Holley Gamble Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Gideon International or Alzheimer’s Association. Family will be at the home of Carl Rhyne, 8200 Ewing Rd., Powell. Holley Gamble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SMITH, MARTHA POWELL, age 91, of Jefferson City, formerly of Harlan, Ky., passed away 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at Jefferson County Nursing Home following an extended illness. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Jefferson County, and a member of LesAmies of Carson-Newman College. Preceded in death by husbands, William I. Powell Jr., and Alfred W. Smith; sisters, Kate Parman, Margaret Ferguson and Mary Jane Ingold; brothers, Lindsey Ferguson and Asa Ferguson; great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Marie Howard. Martha attended Sue Bennett College in London, Ky., a two year college. She later went back to University of Kentucky, graduating with a teaching degree in 1962. She taught many years in the Harlan City Schools, mostly teaching third and fourth grades; fourth was always her favorite grade. She had a love of traveling, sharing this love with her students through the plays that her class would present each year. Family was very important to her and she worked hard to keep in touch with all. Throughout her lifetime, church and her faith were part of all she did. Survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Joy Powell of Jefferson City; daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Leslie Peek of Macon, Ga. and Jane and Charles Howard of Hudson, Ohio; grandchildren and spouses, Bill and Amy Powell of Chapel Hill, N.C., Lynn and Dan Stinebring of Berlin, Ohio, Chuck and Kathy Howard of Duluith, Ga., Robert and Leslie Howard of Bala Cynwyd, Pa. and Joan Howard of San Francisco, Ca.; great-grandchildren, Anna Clair and Jesse Stinebring, Ida Joy, Will and Stew Powell, Eryn Michelle, Kassie Anne and Clayton William Howard. Funeral services 6 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at Farrar’s Chapel with Dr. William Johnson officiating. Family and friends will gather at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Resthaven Cemetery in Harlan, Ky., for a 1 p.m. graveside interment service. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 5-6 p.m. prior to the funeral services. Memorial donations may be made to the Music Program of First Baptist Church, 1610 Russell Ave., Jefferson City, TN. 37760. Farrar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THORNTON, MARJORIE W., of Parrottsville, Tenn., passed away June 3, 1999 at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. She was a retired employee of Morristown-Hamblen Hospital, a member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church and a member of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. She was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Hazel Williamson; sister, Joyce McGaha; brothers, Robert Williamson, Jr. and Conrad Williamson. Survivors: husband, C. Baxter Thornton; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Emma Lee Balch of Parrottsville; step-son, Bartley Thornton of Newport; step-daughter, Bonnie Thornton of Newport; sisters, Frances Cooper, Barabra Heatherly and Carolyn Snapp, all of Newport; brothers, Jack Williamson and Donnie L. Williamson of Newport; granddaughter, Julie Balch of Parrottsville; step-grandchildren, Amy Click, Scott Thornton and Brandi Burgess, all of Newport; several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at Costner-Maloy Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 5, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel. Pastor Claude Villemaire will officiate. Entombment at Resthaven Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. CARROLL, WILLIAM O., 61, of Rutledge, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fielden Funeral Home, New Market.

DANNENHOLD, CYRIL ROGER “CY,“ age 55, of Knoxville, formerly of JeffersonCity, passed away Sunday morning, May 30, 1999, at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. Cy was a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Tennessee Law School and served in the United States Army in Vietnam. He was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church and was with the Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company. An avid tennis player, he was a member of the Bally Health Club. He is survived by a son, Michael Dannenhold of Anaheim, Cali-fornia; parents, Jean and Cyril Dannenhold of Jefferson City; and sister, Kathy Dannenhold of Nashville. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, 1999, at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City with Dr. W.I. Jones and Dr. Vern Holstad officiating with a eulogy by Susan Howell and music by Douglas Manley. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday evening, June 3, 1999, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Can-cer Society, 1423 Leon Drive, Jefferson City, Tennessee 37760 or to Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, 9132 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37923. HAWORTH, ESTHER HAYNES, 90, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fielden Funeral Home, New Market.

HODGE, JAMES C. SR., age 79, of 2315 Buffalo Trail, Tenn., passed away May 31, 1999 at Life Care Center of Morristown. He was a Shriner and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Sherrill Hodge, Lewis Hodge, Thurman Hodge and Everett Hodge. Survivors, son, James C. Hodge Jr., and Donna, Morristown; daughter, Connie Hodge Jones, Morristown; grandchildren, Shannon Stout, Michael Jones, Joe Hodge and James Allen Hodge, all of Morristown; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Shull of California, Margaret Chandler, Erma Bledsoe and Bertie Kennedy, all of Morristown; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Bowers Funeral Home, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, VA. Military services will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Shiloh, VA. Mayes Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
