SELLS, DOROTHEA BARNES, age 77, of Rogersville, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Holston Valley Hospital, following a brief illness, She retired from BellSouth with over 35 years of service. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Hasson Lodge No. 179, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of Telephone Pioneers of America. She was preceded in death by her husband, V.M. Sells; father, William Barnes; mother, Grace Barnes Dickey; sister, Billie Barnes. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Margaret Sells of Rogersville and Frank Eugene and Joyce Martin of Murphy, N.C.; sister, Mrs. James (Sue) Hubbard of Murphy, N.C.,; step-brother, Edward Dickey of Murphy, N.C.,; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Eastern Star services will be held 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Colboch-Price Chapel with Hasson Lodge No. 179, O.E.S. Funeral services will follow. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends anytime at 210 Dobson Drive, Rogersville, and from 6:00-8:00 Wednesday, prior to the services at Colboch-Price Funeral Home in Rogersville. SMELCER, JOHNNIE J., age 80, of 1206A Price Lane, Greeneville, TN. 37743, born February 16, 1919,. Greene County, passed away Monday, March 29, 1999 at Takoma Adventist Hospital, Greeneville, TN. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 2, 1999 at Kiser Funeral Chapel, Interment at New Bethel Cemetery, Greeneville, TN. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home. Kiser Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

ALLMAN, MRS. EVA CAMPBELL, age 92, of Tazewell, passed away Thursday evening at Claiborne Hospital. Funeral arrangements incomplete. Coffey in Tazewell is in charge.

BURTON, MRS. H. VIOLA age 95, of Nashville, TN., died Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Baptist Hospital, Nashville, TN. Mrs. Burton was born on September 10, 1903 in Sneedville, TN., the daughter of the late Origin Morrow Davis and Rufus Catherine Bruce Davis. She was married to Robert Zetty Burton who preceded her in death in 1960. Seven of their children preceded her in death.: Ula Frances Burton, Mary Louise Burton, Robert Lee Burton, Mildred Juanita Grantham, James Albert Burton, Betty Marie Sullins and Ruby Pauline Bennett. Mrs. Burton is survived by three sons: William Chelsey Burton of Nashville, TN., Johnie Edward Burton of Nashville, TN. and Alvin Ray Burton of Smithville, TN.; two daughters, Margaret Gevena Dabbs of Nashville, TN., and Barbara Jean Wooten of Watertown, TN.; 59 grandchildren; 124 great-grandchildren and 62 great-great-grandchildren Funeral service for Mrs. Burton will be held Saturday morning, March 20, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes conducted by Bro. James O. Williams. Interment will follow in Gordonsville Cemetery, Gordonsville, TN. The Burton family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 a.m., to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. Bass Funeral Homes, Gordonsville Chapel Directors in charge.

COLLINS, MRS. VIOLA, 86, of 313 Converse St., Morristown, passed away Monday, March 15, 1999 at Lakeway Regional Hospital, Morristown-Hamblen. Funeral service tonight at 7 p.m. at Rock of Age Baptist Church. Interment 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning in City Cemetery. Family will receive friends tonight. 6:00 p.m. at Rock of Ages Baptist Church. COWAN, JAMES ALVIN, age 87, of 1704 Campbell St., Morristown, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Lakeway Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late Walter and Zelma Cowan of Kingston, TN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Mattison Cowan. He was an employee of the Southern Railroad; was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Survivors: children, son, Michael Cowan (Mary); daughter, Janice Lambert (Kelly), Zelma St. James (Charles) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Carolyn Summers (Tommy) of Morristown, TN.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 20 at Dockery Funeral Home with Rev. E. Cunningham officiating. Interment following the funeral service in City Cemetery. The family will receive friends 12 noon March 20 at Dockery Funeral Home. Dockery Funeral Home in charge.

COX, VELMA SMITH, age 82, passed away Thursday, March 18th in Hickory, N.C. She is preceded in death by her husband, William Samuel (Bill) Cox and parents, Paul and Ella Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Cox resided in Dandridge before Mr. Cox’s death. Survivors: brother, George Smith of Hickory, N.C., with whom she made her home for the past eight years since the death of her husband. Other survivors are stepson, Al Cox of Washburn, TN.,; stepson and daughter-in-law, Franklin and Myrna Cox of Morristown; and step-daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Norman Long of Kodak, TN.; special former daughter-in-law, Evadean Cox Owen; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday 8:00 p.m. at Westside Chapel with Rev. Charles Smith and Rev. J.B. Gulley officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. before services Saturday.. Graveside service will be Sunday 2;00 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Westside Chapel Funeral Home, Morristown, in charge.

ESSARY, CECIL GROVER (DOUGHBELLY), , age 67, of Tazewell, was born August 5, 1931, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 1999 at Claiborne Nursing Home. He was a member of New Tazewell United Methodist Church where he was an usher and served on several committees. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, he served from 1951-1953 and remained in the Reserves from 1953-1958. He also served as a Claiborne County Commissioner for 4 years. Cecil was part owner and manager of Tazewell Auto Parts for over 30 years. He was owner and operator of A-L Radiator Shop in New Tazewell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Cretia (Neely) Essary of Tazewell; brothers, Joe Frank Essary and Hugh Clinton Essary and one sister, Vida Essary Brooks. Survived by his loving wife of 41 years Barbara Harmon Essary of Tazewell; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jeff Rogers of Harrogate; son, Franklin Cecil Essary of Tazewell; step-daughter, Jenna Vannoy of Harrogate; sisters, Pauline Willis of Maryville, Irene Brown of Knoxville, Betty Lou Davis of New Tazewell; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. His family wishes to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses at U.T. Hospital for their loving care and concern, as well as the entire staff of Claiborne County Nursing Home, Tazewell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Tazewell United Methodist Church. Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, New Tazewell United Methodist Church with Rev. John Clark and Rev. Frank Brooks officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before service. Music will be provided by New Tazewell United Methodist Church Choir and soloist, Sandy DeBusk. FRANKENBERG, LOUIS EDWIN., 81 of Morristown, died Wednesday morning, March 17, 1999. Survived by wife, Martha Hoard Frankenberg; two sons, L.E. Frankenberg Jr., and wife Nancy of Bean Station, TN., and Ernest Frankenberg and wife Deborah, of Nashville, TN.; two daughters, Jean Harper of Largo, Fl., and Ginger Mellinger and husband, Pete of Richland, WA.; three grandchildren, Christopher Frankenberg, Scott Mellinger and Staci Mellinger; one great-granddaughter, Devin Mellinger; sister, Elizabeth Frankenberg, Knoxville, TN. Preceded in death by two step-sons, Daryl Lynn Hoard, Long Beach, CA., and Harold Jerry Hoard, Morristown, TN; three brothers, Alfred, Henry, and Charlie; and sister, Emma Lewis. Mr. Frankenberg retired from the Southern Railroad after 44 years. He was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.. Pastor Bruce Jolliff will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church where the body will lie in state for thirty minutes before services.. Interment in Hamblen Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, friends may express sympathy through memorials to Our Savior Lutheran Church or the American Diabetes Association. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 o’clock Friday evening at Stetzer Funeral Home in Morristown. Stetzer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

SEAL, ILENE TRENT, age 81, of Sneedville, born June 14, 1917, departed this life March 19, 1999, after a lingering illness. She was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher at Trent Valley Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lon S. Seal; son, Douglas T. Seal; brothers, Bascum Trent and Vernice Trent. Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Artis M. and Linda Sue (Susie) Seal of Treadway; daughter-in-law, Esther Cannon of Strawberry Plains, TN; granddaughter, Theresa Foister; grandsons, Artis Wayne Seal, Brian Seal and Michael Seal; 4 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Lima T. And Charles Drinnon of Sneedville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 1999 at Trent Valley Baptist Church. Rev. Darrell Ramsey officiating. MYERS, MRS. VIRGINIA GRAHAM, age 74, of Gap Creek Road, Bulls Gap, TN., died early Tuesday morning, March 16, 1999 at her home. She was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Donald Myers; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Darrell Myers, Eldon and Vera Ann Myers, all of Greene County; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters; one brother. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18 at Doughty-Stevens Chapel with interment to follow in Willoughby Cemetery. Rev. Luther Lawson and Rev. Richard Long will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home. Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home in charge.

BANNER, MRS. ALLIE MAE O’BRIEN,. 222 Converse St. Morristown, passed away Thursday, March 4, 1999 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was 93. Preceded in death by husband, Martin Harmon. Banner; sons, Homer, Harold and Martin Jr.; daughter, Kathlene Laws Fredda. Survivors include sons, Ardeal and Kenneth Banner of Morristown, Lemuel of Blairsville, GA.; daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Dorothy) Stepp of Atlanta, Virginia Quarles of North Carolina, Mrs. John W. (Cena) McCaddon of Ada, OK.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be Saturday, March 20, 1999 at the Kingdon Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, Reeds Chapel Road, where she was a member for 42 years. Stetzer Funeral Home in charge.
