GRATZ, JAMES DAVID (JIMMY), age 41, passed away at his home in Jackson, Michigan, Feb. 3, 1999. He was preceded in death by his father, David Gratz, also of Jackson, Mich.; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gratz of Morristown; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hodge of Morristown. Survivors: mother, Mary Alice Hodge Gratz; brother, Jeff Gratz, and nephew, Casey Gratz, all of Jackson, Mich. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends. Everyone who knew Jimmy loved him. Arrangements at this time are incomplete.

HOWARD, WESLEY C., age 66, of Clowers Drive, Knoxville, passed away suddenly at 7:10 p.m. Thursday evening, February 4, 1999, at Saint Mary’s Medical Center in Knoxville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Farrar Funeral Home, 411 W. Broadway Blvd., Jefferson City, Tennessee, 37760 Phone (423) 475-3892.

LAWSON, FRANCES M., 62, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a member of Holston Memorial Baptist Church. Funeral service 8 p.m. Friday at Fielden Chapel. Interment 2 p.m. Saturday at Eastview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, 6-8 p.m. at Fielden Funeral Home, New Market. Fielden Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

MURPHY, MR. HOWARD L. age 50, of 138 Montrose Ave., Morristown, passed away Monday, Feb. 1 at his home. He was employed by Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare in the Dietary Dept. He was preceded in death by father, Prince Theodore Murphy. Survivors: mother, Elizabeth Murphy of Pinehurst, N.C.; (son) Jefferey of Morristown; other relatives and friends in North Carolina and Morristown. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Morristown. He was a former drummer for the Sensational Stans Gospel Singers. Funeral arrangements will be held in N.C., on Saturday. The body is at Percell Funeral Home, 953 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Southern Pines, N.C. Telephone 1-910-693-1147. Local arrangements by Dockery Funeral Home.

SIMPSON, CHARLES FOSTER, 72, passed away February 4, 1999 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was a member of Thorn Hill Baptist Church and a retired veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps after serving for 22 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Starlight 16; V.F.W. Post No. 5266; D.A.V. Chapter 59, the Elks Lodge; founded the local chapter of the NAACP of Morristown in 1967; and a past Deputy Sheriff. Mr. Simpson was owner and operator of Simpson Mortuary for many years in Morristown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stella Foster Simpson and Herbert Simpson. Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Charles of Rogersville, Virginia Smith, and Gaynell Scott of Morristown; one son, Charles “Bo” Simpson of Morristown; two brothers, James Lee Simpson of Middleton, Ohio and Kenneth Simpson of Cleveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a devoted companion, Joyce Snapp and a best friend, Hazel Simpson; and devoted son-in-law, Eddie Charles Jr. Funeral services will be 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Allen Funeral Home with the Reverend Pete Ford and Pastor Fred Oliver officiating. Military graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning at the City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. prior to the services. The family will also receive friends at 2256 Crown Circle or 1320 Virginia Avenue in Morristown. Allen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

STAMEY, ROBERT E., age 62, of 1121 Sunset Drive, Talbott, TN., passed away Thursday afternoon, February 4, 1999 at his home following a brief illness. He was a member of the Victory Baptist Church of Morristown and was a self employed post steel contractor. Son of the late Ervin and Mary Brown Stamey. Survivors: wife, Ann Carpenter Stamey of Talbott; daughter, Treva Woodward of Morganton, N.C.; sons, Kenneth Stamey of Morganton, N.C., Roger Stamey of Mocksville, N.C.; step-daughter, Denise Jones of Newland, N.C.; step-sons, Randall Loveless of Valdosta, Ga., Verlin Loveless of Talbott, TN.; sisters, Betty Stamey of Trexel, N.C., and Virginia Hayes of Valdese, N.C., 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services, Saturday, February 6, 1999, 8:00 p.m. at the Victory Baptist Church, Dearing Rd., Morristown, TN., with Dr. David Sumner officiating. Interment graveside services, Sunday, 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery, Dandridge, TN. Family will receive friends, Saturday evening 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Victory Baptist Church prior to services. Arrangements by Farrar Funeral Home, 162 E. Meeting St., Dandridge, TN., (423) 397-2711.

THOMAS, GLENN PRESTON, age 85, of Lynchburg, Virginia, formerly of Knox County, Tennessee, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Friday, February 5, 1999, at Carrington Nursing Home in Virginia following an extended illness. He was a member of the Marbledale Baptist Church in Knoxville, and was a retired truck driver with 20 years of service. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Otha and Annie Thomas; a sister, Mary Sue Thomas Mowery; and two brothers, Herbert and Lloyd Thomas. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Solomon Thomas of Virginia; sons, Clark M. Thomas of Port Deposit, Maryland and Robert C. Thomas of Rustburg, Virginia; granddaughter, M. Anne Thomas Doyle of Boulder, Colorado; grandson, R.O. Bickington Thomas of Richmond, Virginia; sisters, Maude T. Smith of Seymour, Pauline Branch of Knoxville, Edith Hancock of Strawberry Plains, Evelyn Branson of Strawberry Plains, Margaret Ann Bennett of Knoxville, and Ruby Lane of Powell; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Thomas of Knoxville; brothers, George Thomas of Arizona, Frank Thomas of Strawberry Plains, and Charles Thomas of Jefferson City; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 1999, in the Asbury Cemetery with Reverend Alfred Smith officiating. BROOKS, UNA V., age 78, of Morristown, passed away Thursday, January 28, 1999 at Lakeway Regional Hospital. She was the mother of Mrs. (Terry) Delores Stout. Funeral services will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m. at Westside Chapel. Interment will be in the Hamblen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Westside Chapel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

CRAWFORD, THERESA M., age 88, of Morristown, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare Center. She was a member of Jehovah’s Witness. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Tony Watson of Morristown; son, Ronald Crawford of Japan; granddaughters, Shanna Crawford of Morristown, Angela Davis and fiancee Charles Stubblefield of Jefferson City; grandson, Anthony Watson of Morristown and James Burton; several great-grandchildren; dear friends, Lora and Mark Williams of Morristown, Mark and Mitzi Callis of Morristown. Mayes Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

DEBORD, KENNETH H., Highway 31, Mooresburg, died Monday, January 25, 1999 at his residence. At the time of his death Mr. DeBord was retired, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mooresburg. Mr. DeBord was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Hugh and Pearl Richardson DeBord; one infant sister and two infant brothers. Survivors include one son, Brant DeBord of Milwaukee, WI.; three sisters, Mrs. George (Norma Lochiel) Livesay of Kingsport, Mrs. Gordon (Pauline) Hopson of Greeneville and Mrs. Ronald (Lillie) Dickensen of Kingsport; five brothers, Elmer DeBord, Clyde DeBord and Larry DeBord, all of Kingsport, Dwight DeBord of Church Hill and Hugh Kyle DeBord of Morristown; a number of nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 1999 at the Broome Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 1999 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ronald L. McGee and Rev. Richard Cassidy officiating. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 1999 in the Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. FREEMAN, SERETTA M., of Heritage Center, born April 7, 1916, passed away January 29, 1999 at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. She was retired. Arrangements incomplete and will be announced later by Dockery Funeral Home.

HAGANS, MATTIE ELEANOR HOPKINS LORINO, age 90, passed away early Wednesday morning, January 27, 1999, at her home on 314 East Second North Street, Morristown. Mrs. Hagans was born on October 17, 1908, in Hopkins, North Carolina to George Alexander Hopkins and Frances Maranda Colvard Hopkins, the fifth of ten children. She is preceded in death by husband, Frank Norman Lorino. He and Mattie were married in August 1929 and settled in Morristown. Together they opened the Franklin Cafe, the Tennessean and the Little Dutch Restaurant. Mr. Lorino passed away on January 28, 1970. On November 16, 1975 Mattie married Mr. Frank Maywood Hayes Hagans, formerly of Ohio. Mr. Hagans passed away January 11, 1997. Mrs. Hagans was a member of the First Baptist Church, Morristown where she first became a member in 1930. She was a member of the Eastern Star for over fifty-five years, a member Emeritus of the Pilot Club and a member of the Methodist Hill Garden Club. Mrs. Hagans leaves her children, Mrs. Rita Lorino Smith of Morristown, Mrs. Deloris Lorino Smith and husband, Robert of Knoxville, Mr. William John Lorino and his wife Bette B. of Arlington, Virginia, and Mrs. Frankie Lorino Moyers and her husband, Charles of Morristown. In addition Mrs. Hagans leaves eleven adoring grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Viola Reece of Mountain City, Mrs. Jean Hart of Bristol; and brother, Mr. George Hopkins of Wyoming, Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews; and devoted caregivers, Gereldine Rice and Mary Thomas. Stetzer Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Friday evening, January 29 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The funeral services will follow the visitation. Rev. Randy Davis will be officiating. Graveside services will be Saturday morning, January 30, at 11:00 a.m. at Jarnagin Cemetery. Friends wishing to express sympathy may do so through memorial donations to the First Baptist Church, Morristown, Television Ministry. Stetzer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
