ABEL, Frances Larson,
age 84, of Concord, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Parkwest Medical Center. Mrs. Abel was an active member of Concord Presbyterian Church for 60 years, serving whenever needed. She graduated from old Knoxville High School in the class of 39B and then from The University of Tennessee. After a 25-year career as an engineering associate at Tennessee Valley Authority, she retired in 1979, and spent the last 28 years in numerous volunteer capacities. Her activities included serving at FISH, KARM and Hope Resource Center; recording for the blind; and volunteering for 12 years at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. In 1991, Mrs. Abel demonstrated her passion for preserving the history of the Concord/Farragut community by managing the Farragut Folklife Museum gift shop, which supports the museum. Mrs. Abel’s love of Concord is also evident in her illustration of her husband Mac Abel’s book, “Concord: Where Time Stood Still.” Many have enjoyed her hospitality and the rich history of her town and family home, built in 1866, and lovingly restored by the couple. She will be remembered for her creative talents, from her hand-painted Christmas trees to quilts to knitted and crocheted items. Her legacy of love, strength and perseverance lives on in her family. Preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. B.M. Larson, she is survived by her husband of 63 years, Mac Abel; son, Bob Abel and wife, Linda, of Franklin, N.C.; daughter, Carol Russell and husband, Dave, of Concord; five grandchildren including Barbara Abel of Franklin, and Jonathan Abel of Palmyra, Va.; Sarah Mathis and husband, Jackie, Erin McCarty and husband, Chris, and Laura Russell of Knoxville; five great-grandchildren including Emily, Isaac, Daniel, Esther and Luke Abel; and three international students who became special members of the family: Fred Wickert, Clara Parker and Fan Zhang; brothers, Bert Larson of New Jersey and the Rev. Robert Larson and wife, Mary, of Knoxville; sisters, Margaret Angel of Knoxville and Alice Schroeder and husband, Charlie, of Lancaster, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. A Celebration of Life followed with Dr. Kenneth Gates, Dr. Bob Abel and the Rev Larson officiating. DAVIS, Margaret Elizabeth Wyatt,
age 87, of Knoxville, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Parkwest Medical Center. Mrs. Davis was a long-time past member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, and more recently a proud member of Knoxville First Church of God. She was a resident of Brakebill Nursing Home for 8 1/2 years. A committed Christian wife, mother and friend, she was a joy to all who knew her. She was employed for more than 30 years at Standard Knitting Mills, leaving there to partner with good friend, Minnie Lee Cureton, as owners of Evangel Christian Book Store. Preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William V. “Bill” Davis; parents, Joseph Leonard and Lecloy Wyatt; brothers and sisters, Frank M. Wyatt, Mary C. Davis, Lois L. Franklin, Joe Lee Wyatt, W. Loy Wyatt, Elma M. Ramsey and Clyde Albert Wyatt. She is survived by daughter, Judy Guy; grandchildren and their spouses, Barry and Kim Guy of Knoxville, Barry and Jill Steelman of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Ansley and Austin Guy, Bryce, Erin and Rebecca Steelman; several nieces and nephews; and special family friend, Lorine Graves. A special appreciation is extended to the owners and staff of Brakebill Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion in caring for this precious lady. Funeral service was Monday at First Church of God, Dr. Lee Wallace officiating. The family received friends following the service at the church. KALTHOFF, LaRue Pratt,
age 57, of Knoxville passed away suddenly Friday evening, Jan. 26, 2007, at her home. LaRue was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She was a member of the MENSA International. LaRue loved the water and sunshine. LaRue was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas and Margie Pratt. Survivors: husband of 37 years, Tim Kalthoff; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Clay Carver; sons, Matthew, Jeffrey and Judson Kalthoff; grandchildren, Camilla LaRue Kalthoff and Marghee Claire Carver; sister, Pam Lewis; nephews, Andrew, Craig and Blake Lewis; mother-in-law, Wanda Kalthoff; brother-in-law, Jeff Kalthoff; aunt, Katherine Bell, all of Knoxville. GREER, Lisa Burgin,
age 42, of Knoxville, died Friday morning, Jan. 26, 2007, after an extended illness. She was a member of Gallaher Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Randall; son, Scott; father and stepmother, Bob and Jean Burgin, all of Knoxville; sister, Mary; and brothers, Jerry, John and Tony. Funeral service was Monday at Gallaher Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Bright officiating. Interment followed in Edgewood Cemetery. The family received friends Monday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.
MASSEY Jr., Chester Americus,
age 84, of Knoxville, passed away Jan. 16, 2007, after an extended illness. He was a member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church. He will be forever remembered as a wonderful friend, spouse, father, sportsman, businessman, patriot and naturalist. Chester grew up in Alcoa and Maryville. He attended public schools, until his junior year in which he enrolled at The McCallie School in Chattanooga. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated and concluded a post graduate year at McCallie, where he was an exceptional student and athlete, earning All Chattanooga and All Mid-South recognition in football, basketball and golf. He was the president of his class of 1941. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Georgia Tech, but transferred to The University of Tennessee, where he played basketball and golf. He was a forward on the UT basketball team that won the 1943 Southeastern Conference crown. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, serving as the president of his pledge class and later president of the chapter. He served as president of the Interfraternity Council. He was a student representative to the UT Athletics Board. He was a member of the Scarabbean Society and was a Torchbearer. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in business management in 1947. His college education was interrupted by his service with the U.S. Air Force, beginning in 1943. He was trained as a B-24 bomber pilot and was awarded best graduating pilot and was named a flight instructor. Chester began his successful business career in the insurance business. He formed his own independent agency in 1950. Chester Massey and Company became one of the area’s most successful independent insurance agencies during his business career. Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Americus Massey Sr. and Clara Elizabeth Long Massey; and his sister, Francis Massey Gorman. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Eleanor McNeil Massey; his daughter, Lynn Massey Vogel and husband, Howard H. Vogel, of Knoxville; his son, Morton Massey and wife, Becky Duncan Massey, of Knoxville; his daughter, Deborah Massey Blackburn and husband, Richard Blackburn, of Gallatin Gateway, Mont.; grandchildren, Caroline Carothers Vogel and her husband, Chris Brown, of Knoxville, Alex Vogel, Anna Kathryn Vogel, Courtney Massey Kohlhepp and her husband, Rick Kohlhepp, all of Knoxville, and Kristen Massey of Asheville, N.C.; great-grandchild, Aidan Howard Brown of Knoxville. Following a private interment, there was a service Friday at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William R. Barron officiating. The family received friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. ELLISON Jr., Hugh Breckinridge,
age 55, a loving husband, dedicated father and faithful friend, died Friday morning, Jan. 19, 2007, as the result of complications from cancer. Breck, a fifth generation Knoxvillian, was wellknown in East Tennessee not only for his work with his father, Breck Ellison Sr. in land development and home building, but also for his nationally recognized work in cattle embryo transplant as the president of Breck Ellison Farms in Loudon. Breck was a graduate of The Webb School of Knoxville and attended Carson-Newman College. Breck led numerous ministry trips worldwide and was an active member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church. He created and sponsored the Pray for Righteous Government campaign conducted before citywide elections. He was a past president of the American Simmental Association and an award-winning outdoorsmen who was passionate about Jesus, his family, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Gail Hickam Ellison; two sons, Breck Ellison III and Bradley Ellison; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Karen Ellison; nephews, Chad Ellison and Michael Ellison; niece, Catherine Ellison; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Randy Gilreath; and mother-in-law, Vina Hickam, all of Knoxville. The family expresses their deepest appreciation to Dr. David Rankin and his medical staff for their loving care over the years. Funeral service was Sunday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Dr. Hollie Miller, the Rev. Eric Leake and the Rev. Charlie McNutt officiating.
