her home. Member of Solway Missionary Baptist Church. Preceded in death by:
an infant son; and a special sister, Helen Lee. Survived by: husband, Philip
Earl Roberts, Oak Ridge; son, Don Roberts and wife, Linda of Oak Ridge;
brothers, Earl Franklin Newby and Ralph Newby of Spring City, Tenn.; three
grandchildren, Kimberly Roberts, Amy Roberts and Joseph Roberts of Oak Ridge;
special niece and nephew, Beverly Farmer and George Lee of Oak Ridge. Funeral
services are Saturday, April 24, 1999, at 8:30 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary

WILLIAMS, LOLA HERNDON - age 91, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday evening at
Fort Sanders Parkwest Hospital. She was the widow of Riley Williams. Member
of First Christian Church of Butler, Mo. Mrs. Williams taught in a one room
school in rural Missouri. Later she was a classroom teacher and a certified
speech and hearing therapist. Charter member of Butler Chapter Alpha Delta
Kappa Teacher Sorority. She was a graduate of Central Missouri State
University at the age of 49 and did graduate work at the University of
Wyoming. She was preceded in death by: grandson, Mark Williams; and brothers,
Omar, Clyde and Donald Herndon. She is the mother of Bill Williams of WBIR
Channel 10, and mother-in-law of Wanda Shaver Williams of Tellico Village;
grandchildren, Angelique and Wesley Thomas, Michael and Crystal Williams of
Knoxville, Marcelene and David Edwards of Phoenix, Ariz.; great-grandson,
Riley James Thomas; sisters, Meredith Sanazaro, Riverside, Calif.; sister and
brother-in-law, Gladean and Percy Medlock of Houston, Texas; brother and
sister-in-law, Dell and Hildred Herndon, Whittier, Calif.; brother, Eldon
Herndon of Auburn, Calif.; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Williams will be
flown to Butler, Mo., to Underwood-Steinbeck Funeral Home, where services
will be held 2 p.m. Monday with interment to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. A
local memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist
Church of Fountain City, Dr. Marvin Cameron, Rev. Ron Mouser and Dr. Calvin
Metcalf officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East
Tennessee Children's Hospital, 2018 Clinch Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916, or to
the Mission of Hope, PO Box 22312, Knoxville, TN 37933. The family will

CROWDER, JERRY C. - age 48, of N. Patton Ave., Rockwood, passed away Friday
in the Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge. He is survived by: wife, Karen
Crowder; parents, Raymond and Louise Crowder, all of Rockwood; sisters, Donna
E. Hard, Spring City, Judith M. McElroy, Morristown; grandmother, Reba Croft,
Madisonville; step-sons, Herbie Ward and Judy, Brad Noah and Sher;
mother-in-law, Mary Lee Williams, all of Maryville; step-grandchild, Kirbi
Ward. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 8 p.m. from the chapel of
Evans Mortuary with Rev. Ben Whittenbarger and Wayne Roddy officiating.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery
with full military honors by Roane Volunteer Honor Guard. The family will

HENDERSON, JUANITA ELIZABETH - age 96, of Clinton, Tenn., passed away April
24, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville. She lived in Rhea Co. most of
her life. She attended Mountainview United Methodist Church in Dayton, Tenn.
Survivors: daughter, Nancy Alley of Clinton; three grandchildren, Janet
Rutherford of Knoxville, Harold George Hightower of Rainbow City, Ala.,
Yvonne Ownby of Chattanooga; four great-grandchildren and one great,
great-grandson. Services will be Monday at 8 p.m. at Vanderwall Funeral Home
chapel, Dayton, Tenn. Burial in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Visiting hours

SHARP, BETTY JEAN - age 62, of Foust Carney Rd., Claxton community, Clinton,
Tenn., passed away Friday at her residence. Member of South Clinton Baptist
Church. Preceded in death by her parents, George and Irene Jones. Survivors:
husband, to whom she was married for 47 years, James Lloyd Sharp of Claxton;

TIDWELL, CHINA EDNA McNEELY - age 86, of Rt. 2, LaFollette, passed away
Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center. She was
a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her:
husband, Ancil Adam Tidwell; son and daughter, Jimmy Ray and Lucille Tidwell;
parents, John Verllin and Nancy Ann Harvey McNeely. She is survived by: sons
and daughters-in-law, Verlin and Deloris Tidwell of Powell, and William
"Bill" and Carol Tidwell of LaFollette; daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline
Jones of LaFollette, Bobbie Jean and Earl Chapman and Donna and Wayne McGhee,

Church and had sung with the Wright Family for 34 years. Member of Caryville
Masonic Lodge #665 F&AM, retired coal miner. Preceded in death by parents,
Abe and Susie Bryge McKamey. Survivors: wife of 52 years, Lizzie McGhee
McKamey; sons and daughters-in-law, Glen Ray and Mary Ann McKamey, Caryville,
Robert Lee and Brenda McKamey, Coalfield, Kenneth E. and Marcia McKamey,

away Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Rose Manor Health Care in Durham, N.C. She
had worked at Magnet Mills in Clinton and Anderson Co. Health Care Center.
She was preceded in death by husband, William T. Baker and parents, Steve and
Lou Sharp. She is survived by daughter, Judy Denny of Durham, N.C.;
granddaughter, Lorie and husband, Fred Fabian of Richmond, Va.; grandson,
Marc and wife, Clari Denny of Durham, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Brooke

HATMAKER, ELLA - passed away Tuesday, April 27th, at the LaFollette Medical
Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey H. Hatmaker; son,

Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include daughter, Mary Broyles of
LaFollette; three grandchildren, Diana Johnson of LaFollette, Erma Hatmaker

SCOTT, M.H. (HUDDY) - age 81, of Longwood, Fla., formerly of LaFollette,
passed away Tuesday, April 27, 1999. He was a member and elder of LaFollette
First Presbyterian Church, and former member of LaFollette City Council. He
was also a member of LaFollette Masonic Lodge #623 F.& A.M. and a Shriner.
Mr. Scott was a retired life insurance agent. Survivors: son and
daughter-in-law, Gary Wayne and Nancy (Murray) Scott of Longwood, Fla.;
sister, Maurine Heaberlin, Wartburg, Ky.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral
service 8 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Cross Chapel, Rev. James Hall

TEAGUE, MARION - age 78, of Jacksboro, Tenn., formerly of Eagan, Tenn.,
passed away Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at LaFollette Medical Center. He was the
son of the late Craig and Martha Davis Teague and a retired coal miner.

LONG, MRS. MARY SHAVER - age 76, of Lancing, passed away Wednesday evening,
April 28, 1999. Mrs. Long was retired as a supervisor for the Tennessee
Welfare Dept. and also taught school a number of years in Morgan Co. She
enjoyed working with flowers at her home west of Lancing on Hwy. 62. She was
preceded in death by parents, Horatio and Myrtle Owens Shaver. Surviving are
her husband of 51 years, Arthur Festus Long of Lancing; daughter, Janice Long
Hughes of Austin, Texas; sons, James R. Long of Lewisburg, Tenn. and Charles
Henry Long of Lancing, Tenn.; grandchildren, Holly Hughes of Austin, Texas,
Jake and Joe Long of Lincoln, Neb., Matthew and Amber Long of Lancing, Tenn.

VENABLE, MR. BENJAMIN ARTHUR - of Oakdale, passed away Tuesday, March 11,
1999. He was completing study for a master's degree in German language and
literature at the University of Tennessee. He received a bachelor's degree in
archeology at UT in 1992 and did graduate study at the University of Florida.
He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. He was
preceded in death by his father, Bill Arthur Venable; and his grandparents,
Ben Zemra and Cassie Venable and Arthur and Bertie Venable. Surviving are his
mother, Mrs. Wanda M. Venable of Harriman; uncle, Ben Z. Meers, Jr. of
Augusta, Ga. and several cousins. Memorial service will be held Saturday, May
1, 1999, at 11 a.m. Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg with Rev. Charles Kelly

Walter and Mary Lawson Kendrick; husband, Shirley W. Zumstein. Survived by
daughter, Julia Ann Zumstein, Rockwood; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and
Richard Devine, Pascagoula, Miss.; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Judy
Zumstein, Oakdale; three grandchildren, Richard Devine, Beth Broom, Carol
Burnett; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Funeral service will be

COWARD, ELSIE BELL - age 74, of Claxton Community, passed away Wednesday,
April 28, 1999, at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. Mrs. Coward was of the
Baptist faith. Retired from Park West Hospital. Mrs. Coward was born November
23, 1925, in Knox County to the late Marion and Minnie McFarland Childress.
Preceded in death by her husband, Amos Coward. Survivors: daughter, Betty and
husband, Richard Thurman; son, Wayne and wife, Brenda Coward; sister, Polly
Hayes; brothers, Clifton and wife, Diane Childress, Earl and wife, Gladys
Childress; grandchildren, Julie and Chuck Williams, David and Carla Thurman,
Larry and Cheri Coward, Melissa and David Bunch, Kenneth Coward;
great-grandchildren, Josh Turner, Autumn and Serena Williams, Allen, Laura,

Windwood Health Center. She was a member of Clinton Church of God. She was
born in Friendsville, Tenn., September 25, 1923. She was preceded in death by
son, Carlos Jack Byrd, Jr.; and parents, Uless and Cindi Crisp Pass.
Survivors: husband, Carlos Byrd, Clinton; son, Kenny and wife, Susan Byrd,
Clinton; granddaughter, Mariah Ann Byrd, Clinton; several nieces and nephews;

THORESEN, FRANCES "PAT" - of Norris, Tenn., died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at
the St. Clair Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa., following a brief illness. Mrs.
Thoresen was Unicoi Co., Tenn., native but had lived in Norris, Tenn. most of
her life. She was a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Etta Moore O'Brien.
Mrs. Thoresen was a graduate from the North Carolina Women's College in
Greensboro, N.C. She was a retired school teacher having taught at Norris
High School. Mrs. Thoresen was a member of the Norris St. Francis Episcopal
Church. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Carl T. Thoresen in April 24, 1959. Survivors include two sons, Joe Thoresen,
Pittsburgh, Pa., Doug Thoresen, Franklin, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Carl,
Eric, Elizabeth, Erin and Lauren; one great-granddaughter, Rain. Memorial

Baptist Church in Bellevue, Ohio. She was preceded in death by parents, John
and Harriett (Meyers) Goin; husbands, Arlie T. Neely, Sylus Walker, Sr.;

PARKS, RALPH - age 70, Ridgewood Dr., Clinton, Tenn., passed away Friday at
Methodist Medical Center. Former manager for the White Stores in Clinton for
approximately 44 years. Member of Gloryway Baptist Church in Clinton. Son of
the late Charles M. and Pearl H. Parks. Preceded in death also by brothers,
Othal, Owen, Arthur, and Lawrence Parks; and sisters, Helen Cole and
Ernestine Leach. Survivors: wife, Martha "Bobbie" Henegar Parks of Clinton;
daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and David McGill of Goldsboro, N.C., Lynda
and Billy Lowe of Clinton; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary K. and Teresa
Parks of Clinton, Tony and Shelia Parks of Clinton; nine grandchldren; two
great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Trammell of Lenoir City, Tenn., Edna

GABLE, WILLIE (RED) - age 80, a former resident of Harriman Gardens Apt.,
Harriman, Tenn., entered into eternal rest May 1, 1999, Marshall Doss Health
Care Center. Preceded in death by parents, John and Mary Burns Gable; three
brothers and four sisters. Survivors: sons, Robert T. Love, Harriman;
daughter, Karen McDowell, California; four grandchildren; and a host of
nieces and nephews and many devoted friends to include former wife, Alyadan
Gable. Funeral service to be held Tuesday, 12 noon, St. Mary's Baptist
Church, Harriman, Tenn., Rev. Jesse L. Williams officiating. Interment Roane
Memorial Gardens. The body will lie in state form 10 until time of services.
The body may be viewed Monday from 4-7 p.m. in Harriman. Jarnigan & Son

SELLARS, BARBARA KAY - age 43, a resident of Harriman, passed away Sunday,
May 2, 1999, at the Ft. Sanders Park West Hospital of Knoxville. Mrs. Sellars
was preceded in death by her parents, Conley and Bonnie Loy; by a son, Bryson
Phillips; by a brother, H.L. Loy; and by two brothers-in-law, Greg Blank and
Steve O. Underwood. Survivors: husband, Roger Sellars of Harriman; daughters,
Stacy Arthur and husband, David of Lenoir City, Lisa Green and husband, Scott
of Oliver Springs; sons, Scott Kennedy and wife, Kristy of Sylvia, N.C.,
Bryan Sellars of Knoxville; grandchildren, Gage C. Kennedy, Alex Arthur, Sam
Kennedy, Trish Kennedy, and her little angel Haley C. Arthur; brothers, Butch
Loy of Harriman, Gene Loy and wife, Ruth of Harriman, Clifford Loy of
Harriman, J.D. Loy and wife, Becky of Harriman; sisters, Carolyn Blank of
Oliver Springs, Ima Jean Everett and husband, Albert of Harriman, Brenda

cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sellars was born July 11, 1955, in Olivers
Springs. She had lived in this area all of her life. She worked as a
self-employed dispatcher of the SMT Transportation System. She was a member
of the Clax Gap Baptist Church. Funeral service will be held Monday, May 3,
at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Hensley, Rev.
Lee Wayne Grubb, Rev. Sam Loy and Pastor Garvan Walls officiating. Friends
may call Monday, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The
family will also receive friends at the Clax Gap Baptist Church, Tuesday,
between 1 and 2 p.m. Burial and graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2
p.m. at the Clax Gap Cemetery. In addition to flowers, the family asks that

TODD, REV. JOHN LESTER, SR. - age 87, of the Marshall C. Voss Health Care
Center, formerly of Harriman, passed away Sunday, May 2nd, in the health care
center. He was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church, retired butcher in
Harriman and a Baptist minister for 57 years. He was preceded in death by
parents, Bruner and Verna Key Todd; wife, Dovie Todd; son, John Lester Todd,
Jr.; grandson, Clarence Ray McCullough; brothers, Earl, Willie, Claude Todd;
sister, Levine Todd. Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Wilma and Howard
Cofer, Peggy and James (Junior) McCullough, all of Rockwood, Glenda and Ken
Barnes, Sweetwater, Donna Cunningham, Harriman; daughter-in-law, Pauline
Todd, Nashville; sons and daughters-in-law, Hobert and Barbara Todd,
Rockwood, Gary and Linda Todd, Tucson, Ariz., Steve and Rosemary Todd,
Harriman; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; three

QUILLEN, PATRICK HOWARD - of Middletown, Ohio, died Friday, April 30, 1999,
at Middletown Regional Hospital. A native of LaFollette, Tenn., he was
formerly employed by the US Postal Service in Springboro, where he resided in
1998, a Vietnam Veteran, he was a graduate of Springboro High School and a
member of the Springboro Eagles. He is survived by his parents, Robert and
Mildred Quillen of Jacksboro, Tenn.; a brother, Stuart "Sandy" Quillen of
Miamisburg; a sister, Roberta "Charles" Miller of Springboro; and a nephew,
Michael "Shannon" Ferguson of Warren, Mich. Funeral services will be Tuesday
at 8 p.m. at the Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. 2nd St., Rev.
Delbert Dawes will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the
funeral home. Burial will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Bakers Forge Cemetery in
