Margaret Elaine Hughes
Died: 05/28/1999
Margaret Elaine Hughes, of Sale Creek, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 47.
Mrs. Hughes was the local newspaper carrier for The Chattanooga Times/Chattanooga Free Press.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Big Man and Laverne Rogers, three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Hughes of Sale Creek; one daughter, Christina Hughes of Sale Creek; three brothers, Richard Corbitt of Pisgah, Ala., Earnest Corbitt of Rainsville, Ala., and Donald Corbitt of Pisgah, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 31, at Friendship Baptist Church at Pisgah, Ala., with Rev. Mike Young officiating. Interment followed at Friendship Cemetery in Pisgah, Ala., with Rev. Earnest Corbitt and Rev. Jim Bernard adjoining. Rainsville Funeral Home in Rainsville, Ala., was in charge of the arrangements.
Clarence A. Waldo
Died: 05/25/1999
Clarence A. Waldo, of Spring City, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 74.
Mr. Waldo was a retired cutter from Robinson Manufacturing Company in Dayton, a World War II Veteran, a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Spring City and a member of Disabled American Veterans for 28 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Vennie Kerns Waldo; and wife, Elsie Waldo.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Wallace (Andy) and Jane Waldo of Spring City; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and James Smith of Vallejo, Calif.; three grandchildren, William and Wayne Waldo and Ashley Smith; sisters, Faye Hickey of Spring City and Hazel Clifton of Oak Ridge; brothers, George Waldo of Spring City, James Waldo of Gainesville, Fla., and Eugene Waldo of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 28, in the chapel of Evans Mortuary with Rev. Clint Miller officiating. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery in Spring City with full military honors by Roane Volunteer Honor Guard. Evans Mortuary in Rockwood was in charge of the arrangements.
Samuel Ray Barley
Died: 05/26/1999
Samuel Ray Barley, of Englewood, Tenn., died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah Tenn. He was 64.
Mr. Barley was a member of Old Washington Baptist Church, a Veteran of the U.S. Army and a maintenance employee for Sunbeam-Oster in Dayton for 18 years where he was president of his union. He was also an avid antique collector.
Mr. Barley was preceded in death by his father, Robert Barley; son, Michael Wayne Barley; and brother, Junior Barley.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda McConkey Barley of Englewood; mother, Delia Barley of Dayton; sons, Samuel Ray Barley Jr. of Dayton and Billy Ray Barley of Maryville; daughter, Teresa Ann Barley of Dayton; step-daughter, Chan Risner of Pinckney, Minn.; brother, Phillip Barley of Douglas, Ga.; sisters, Myrtle Hackler of Spring City, Joetta Gravett of Dayton, Carolyn Morris of Kingston, Ga., and Billie Mayberry of Dayton; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 28, in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with Charles Carney officiating. Burial was in Spence Cemetery in Dayton. Bowers Funeral Home in Decatur was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert G. Monday
Died: 05/23/1999
Robert G. Monday, of Elyria, Ohio, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria, after a heart attack. He was 48.
Born in Rockwood, he attended Spring City High School where he played football, baseball and basketball. Mr. Monday graduated from Keystone High School, in Elyria in 1969, where he played football and baseball. He also attended Lorain County Community College in Ohio. He was employed by Barth Industries in Parma, Ohio for 20 years.
Mr. Monday enjoyed golf, fishing, paintball and working in his yard.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Susan E. Sorrell Monday of Elyria; daughters, Molly A. Monday and Adrianne M. Monday, both of Elyria; son, Andrew R. Monday of Elyria; parents, George and Vida Monday of Spring City; sisters, Jacqulyn Bias and Beverly Monday, both of Spring City, and Michelle Gurley of Dayton; and brothers, Anthony Monday of Elyria and Jason Monday of Trenton, Ga.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 26, at Dicken Funeral Home in Elyria, with Rev. Bill Seith, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church in Elyria, officiating. Burial was in Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of local arrangements.

Catherine Marie Bates
Died: 05/27/1999
Catherine Marie Bates, of Spring City, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at her residence in Spring City. She was 87.
Born in Lansing, Mich., she moved to Spring City in 1996 from Port Ritchie, Fla. She was a homemaker and attended St. Bridget Catholic Church in Dayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas S. Bates, her parents, Charles and Alice Kerrigan O’Neil, her daughter, Patricia Ann Bates, her son, Joseph Bates and her sister, Margaret Caudill.
Survivors include one daughter, Alice Bates Butler of Elizabethtown, Ky.; two sons, Thomas Bates of Athens, Ala., and Raymond Bates of Ridgeland, S.C.; three sisters, Elizabeth Caudill of Spring City, Alice Fisher of Tampa, Fla., and Ester Kerrigan of Athens, Ala.; one brother, Christy O’Neil of Spring City; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 31, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Father John Milewski officiating. Interment followed in the Spring City Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home of Spring City was in charge of arrangements.
Pheba F. Lyles
Died: 05/31/1999
Pheba F. Lyles, of Covington, La., died Monday, May 31, 1999, in Mandeville, La. She was 88.
Ms. Lyles was a former resident of Spring City and Crossville.
Survivors include one son, Charley Hugh Lyles and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of Covington, La.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 1, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Rothwell officiating. Interment followed in Spring City Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home of Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Carmella Margueriet Ruitenberg
Died: 05/29/1999
Carmella Marguerite Ruitenberg, of Dayton, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Vencor Hospital at Chattanooga. She was 77.
Born to Sebastian and Consuello Beninato in Hartford, Conn., Ms. Ruitenberg worked as a cook in different restaurants in Connecticut.
After living in Wisconsin, she moved to Dayton in 1997 where she was involved with the Dayton Arts Council. She was also of the Catholic faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Ruitenberg.
Survivors include two sons, Edmund Leete of Lebanon, Conn., and Lucian Leete of Spring City; two brothers, Lucian Beninato of Georgia and Concetto Beninato of Conn.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No services were conducted. Vanderwall Funeral Home of Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
James W. Sutton
Died: 5/18/99
James W. Sutton, of Spring City, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at Baptist Hospital of Knoxville. He was 52.
A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Sutton was the son of the late James Virgil and Una Mae Hill Sutton. He was a mechanic by trade and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his sons, Justin and Brandon Sutton, both of Spring City, Eric Sutton of Nashville and Jeff Sutton of Rockwood; daughters, Sabrina Sutton of Decatur, Ark., and Lisa Sutton of Rockwood; brother, Jerry Sutton of Evensville; special friend, Wanda Zunk of Spring City; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Thursday, May 20, at Porter Cemetery in Spring City with Rev. Jake Fisher officiating. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.
Junnie Lee Brandon Maynor
Died: 5/24/99
Junnie Lee Brandon Maynor, of Dayton, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at Rhea County Nursing Home. She was 92.
A lifetime resident of Dayton, Ms. Maynor was the daughter of the late Taylor and Maggie Breedlove Brandon. She was a member of the Garrison Baptist Church, and a member and Gold Star Mother of American Legion Auxiliary, Post 100, Dayton, Tenn. She was also a member of Woodmen of the World.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Thomas D. Maynor, and her son, Master Sergeant Roy Lee Maynor of the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include her two sons, John “Sonny” Maynor and Raymond “Tad” Maynor, both of Dayton; one daughter, Betty McDonald of Red Bank; five granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; seven great-grandsons; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews including Armeda Cooley Cochran of Dayton.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in Rhea Memory Gardens with Rev. Barry Purser officiating. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
