Wallace C. Vaughn
Died: 09/23/1998

Wallace C. “Dub” Vaughn, of Dayton, died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998. He was the son of the late William “Tack” and Katherine Anne Barton Vaughn.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Vaughn retired in 1977 as a boilermaker with the Tennessee Valley Authority and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Bishop Vaughn of Dayton; daughter, Naomi J. Hamilton of Kingsport, Tenn.; three sisters, Lucille Richardson of Chattanooga, Alma Benson of Dayton and Ruth Beene of Dayton; grandson, Mike Neal of Sale Creek; granddaughter, Angela Armetta of Birmingham, Ala.; great-grandsons, Michael Neal of Chattanooga and Luke Armetta of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton with Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating. Interment followed the services in Rhea memory Gardens. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements in Dayton.

Douglas F. Kelly
Died: 10/12/1998

Douglas F. Kelly, of Spring City, formerly of Dayton, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in a local hospital. He was the son of late Thomas C. and Estelle Boyd Kelly. He was 78.

Mr. Kelly was a member of the Rockwood Church of Christ. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Brady Williams Post 100 in Dayton. He was also a member of the Rockwood Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Survivors include his wife, Jesse Kelly of Spring City; daughter, Mary Anne Best of Dayton; son, Jack Kelly of Dayton; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Minister Steve Brown officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. before the service. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the building fund for the Dayton Church of Christ or to the American Heart Association. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of arrangements.

Juanita Z. Harrison
Died: 10/14/1998

Juanita Z. Harrison, of Spring City, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at Hamilton County Nursing Home in Chattanooga. She was 80.

She was a member of the Yellow Creek Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her daughter, Ilene Lasley, brother, Condra Dyer and sister, Alma Dyer.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Tate Harrison of Spring City; son, Tate Harrison of Dayton; sister, Beulah Thurman of Chattanooga; brother Everett Dyer of Paducah, Ky.; six grandchidren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Lasley, Rev. Don Lasley and Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow the services in Spring City Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of arrangements.

Flossie Ewton
Died: 10/07/1998

Flossie Ewton, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Green and Lillie Dillard. She was 81. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ethel boles and Mossie Hawkins, and brother, Lloyd Dillard.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil A. Ewton of Dayton; son, Cebrion Angel of Evensville; sister, Mammie Rice of Dayton; brother, Albert Dillard of Dayton; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday Oct. 9, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Minister Steve Brown officiating. Interment followed the services in Dayton City Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Leffew
Died: 10/12/1998

Ralph Leffew, of Evensville, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 76.

He was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and a member of Evensville Church of the Living God. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Emma (Martin) Leffew, and son, Marion Leffew.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth D. Leffew of Evensville; four sons, Jennings and Paul Leffew, both of Grandview, Jerry Leffew of Soddy-Daisy and Melvin Leffew of Evensville; three daughters, Emmaline Watson of Spring City, Lois Burton of Evensville and Judy Couch of Dayton; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at the Evensville Church of the Living God with Rev. Rick Davis and Rev. Charles Sneed. Interment followed the services at Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Patsy Moore
Died: 10/12/1998

Patsy Moore, of Chattanooga, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga. She was 64.

She was a lifelong resident of Tennessee and was of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Moore, daughter, Debbra Lynn Secrest, and sister Brenda Wiggins.

Survivors include four sons, Terry Lee Springfield of Spokane, Wash., Ricky Dean Springfield of San Diego, Calif., Charles Christopher Springfield of Panama City, Fla., and Jeffrey Blair Thomas of Chattanooga; two daughters, Kathy Ann Currie of Rossville, Ga., and Rhonda Renee Jones of Crossville, Tenn.; sister, Donna Smith of Evensville; two brothers, Charles Miles of Dayton and Larry Miles of Spring City; 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at noon Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Saylors. Interment followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Willis Dewayne Crabtree
Died: 10/18/1998

Willis Dewayne Crabtree, of Winfield, Tenn., formerly of Spring City, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, in Oneida, Tenn. He was the son of Elsie Stanley and the late Hoyle P. Crabtree. He was 50.

Willis was a Vietnam Veteran and a member of VFW Post 5669 of Oneida, and a member of the Second Bethlehem Church of Winfield (Tenn.).

Survivors include two daughters, Tabitha Sauls and Melinda Crabtree, both of Winfield, Tenn.; son, Dwayne Crabtree II of Winfield, Tenn.; two brothers, Steve Crabtree of Winfield, Tenn., and Charles Gordon Crabtree of Long Island, N.Y.; sister, Angeletta Adkins of Winfield, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, in the chapel of Jones and Sons Funeral Home in Oneida, Tenn., with Rev. Guy Ainsworth and Rev. Jack Chitwood officiating. Interment will follow the services in Walker Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 136 of Oneida, Tenn. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at Jones and Sons Funeral Home in Oneida. This announcement courtesy of Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City.

Robbie Simpson
Died: 10/16/1998

Robbie Simpson, of Dunlap, Tenn., died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in a Chattanooga hospital. She was of the Baptist Faith and was preceded in death by her father, Elmer W. Purser, grandson, Dylan Bates, and her grandparents. She was 57.

Survivors include her husband, Homer Simpson of Dunlap; three daughters, Carolyn Waters of Chattanooga, Susan Bates of Dayton and Laura Barker of Dunlap; two sons, Marty Simpson of Chattanooga and Clay Simpson of Dalton, Ga.; mother, Melbra A. Purser of Florence, Ala.; three sisters, Shirley Sliger of Chattanooga, Phyllis Purser of Florence, Ala., and Dale Smith of Chattanooga; nine grandchildren, and several nieces nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Simpson were held Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Putnam-Standefer-Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Tim McCulley officiating. Burial followed the services in Chapel Hill Cemetery. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. Putnam-Standefer-Reed Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Conner Spence
Died: 10/19/1998

Ruth Conner Spence, a resident of the Golden Years Retirement Resort in Spring City, formerly of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 81.

Mrs. Spence was born Jan. 12, 1917, in Irving, Texas, and was the daughter of Ira A. Hicks and Gertie Weir Hicks. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. She enjoyed gardening and walking, and reaching out to anyone who might need help.

Survivors include her husband, A.C. Spence of Spring City; daughters, Marilyn Case and husband, Lawrence, of Knoxville and Carolyn Shamaya of Santa Fe, N.M.; four grandchildren, Brooke Turner and husband, Tom, of Los Alamos, N.M., Spence Dowlen of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Stacey Case of Detroit, Mich., and Blake Case of Oak Ridge; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Turner and Brandon Turner of Los Alamos, N.M.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge with Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Spence Cemetery in Dayton. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38173-0704; to the Alzheimer’s Association, East Tennessee Chapter, 1924 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920; or to the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Louise McSpadden
Died: 10/21/1998

Wilma Louise McSpadden, of Spring City, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, in Knoxville. She was 69.

Mrs. McSpadden was a lifelong resdient of Rhea County and a member of New Union Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Nelson and Lela (Massengale) Cochran; three sisters, Mary Dillard, Doris Pope and Mildred Matthews; and two brothers, J.C. Cochran and Harold Cochran. Survivors include her husband, Frank McSpadden of Dayton; daughter, Nancy McSpadden Dees of Cleveland, Tenn.; son, David McSpadden of Dayton; three sisters, Thelma Benton of Paducah, Ky., Lillie Sweet of Cleveland, Tenn., and Shirley Normon of Cleveland, Tenn.; three brothers, Bill Cochran of Cleveland, Tenn., Delano Cochran of Dayton and Paul Cochran of Dayton; three grandchildren, one step-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at New Union Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Burns and Rev. Danny Ruehling officiating. Interment will follow the services in Smith Wilkey Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Leona H. Tyson
Died: 10/21/1998

Leona H. Tyson, of Detroit, Mich., died there Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Tyson. She was 85.

Survivors include her son, Charlie Ether Baggett of Ringgold, Ga.; three daughters, Geraldine Burton of Graysville, Cecile Ruby Bart of Detroit, Mich., and Shirley J. Hinson of Detroit, Mich.; eight grandsons, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow the services in Cove Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie Roddy Watson
Died: 10/21/1998

Bobbie (Roddy) Watson, of Spring City, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, in Knoxville. She was preceded in death her husband, Guthrie Watson; two brothers, Bill and Jimmy Roddy. She was 72.

Survivors include her daughters, Beverly Cagle of Crossville, Tenn., and Kathy Daniel of Chattanooga; two sisters, Dixie Morton of Evensville and Learlean Powers of Dayton; three brothers, Johnny Roddy of Dayton, Kenneth Roddy of Chattanooga and Leonard Roddy of Battle Creek, Mich.; two grandchildren and several nieces nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City with Rev. Danny Ruehling officiating. Interment followed the services in Spring City Memeorial Gardens. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
