Wilma Dean Dillard
Died: 06/17/1999
Wilma Dean Dillard, of Hixson, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Memorial Northpark Hospital in Chattanooga. She was 59.
A former resident of Rhea County, Mrs. Dillard lived in Hixson the last six years of her life. She was a graduate of Rhea Central High School and was employed by Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Mich., for many years. She was also a member of United Auto Workers. Mrs. Dillard was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
Survivors include her son, Tony Dillard of Detroit, Mich.; daughters, Rhonda Boscaring and Jan Stanley, both of Detroit, Mich., and Karen and Vanessa Dillard, both of Chattanooga; parents, Rolland and Margaret Nelson of Chattanooga; brothers, Bobby (Ralph) and Elzie (Outys) Nelson, both of Chattanooga; and six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 21, at Hixson Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Robert Fancher officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Mildred King Hickson
Died: 06/20/1999
Mildred King (Me-Maw) Hickson, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Community Care of Rutherford County in Murfreesboro. She was 78.
Mrs. Hickson was a native of Lincoln County, Tenn., and a daughter of the late Perry Judson and Sarah Rutledge King. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon W. Hickson; son, Michael K. Hickson; and granddaughter, Robin Hickson.
Mrs. Hickson was of the Church of God faith and a homemaker by trade.
Survivors include her daughters, Sue Henley of Murfreesboro, Sarah Mathis of Lascassas, Tenn., and Juanita Harkins of Evensville; sons, Stephen W. Hickson of Murfreesboro, and Patrick J. Hickson of South Carolina; and 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, June 23, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro, with Rev. Darrel Whaley officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of local arrangements.
Edna Frances Coulter Smith
Died: 06/23/1999
Edna Frances Coulter Smith, of Harriman, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at Royal Care of Harriman. She was 88.
Born in Rhea County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Hugh M. and Eliza Hill Coulter. She was a homemaker by trade and of the Methodist faith.
She was preceded in death by her son, Glenn (Pete) T. Smith Sr.; three sisters, Ruby Barger, Nora Adams and Blanche Holder; and three brothers, Wallace, Blaine and John Coulter. Survivors include her son, E.L. Smith Jr.; daughters, Joann Tharpe of Cleveland, Ohio, and Frances Johnson of Brunswick, Ohio; brother, H.M. Coulter of Rockwood; 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, June 20, in Porter Cemetery in Spring City with Rev. David Harmon officiating. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.
Cory Lee Conaway
Died: 06/24/1999
Cory Lee Conaway, of Dayton, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. He was two months old.
Born April 19, 1999, at East Ridge Hospital, Conaway lived in Dayton all of his life.
Survivors include his parents, Albert and Teresa Wilson Conaway of Dayton; brother, Blake Darrell Conaway of Dayton; grandparents, Lyle and Cathy Owen of Evensville, Jeff Wilson of Lakeview, Mich., and David and Sue Hallengren of Kansas City, Mo.; great-grandparents, Louise Clausius of Dayton, Dorcus Vanlhern of Howard City, Mich., and Dave and Judy Wilson of Stanton, Mich.; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 26, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. David Crabtree officiating. Burial was in Babyland in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Michael Dean Edwards

Michael Dean Edwards, of Spring City, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Watts Bar Dam in Meigs County where he drowned. He was 37.
Mr. Edwards was a truck driver and construction worker for Hampton’s Construction & Trucking in Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Belinda Edwards of Spring City; mother, Helen LaPorte of New Iberia, La.; father, Dudley Edwards of Spring City; daughter, Brandy Edwards of Spring City; son, Michael Edwards of Spring City; sister, Michelle Edwards of New Iberia, La.; and neice, Crystal Edwards of New Iberia, La.
Private funeral services will be conducted for family only. Bowers Funeral Home in Decatur was in charge of the arrangements.
Maggie Lee Henderson Barnes

Maggie Lee Henderson Barnes, of Rockwood, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Rockwood Health Care Center. She was 90.
Mrs. Barnes was a member of North Rockwood Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sophronia Waller Henderson, and her husband, Lum Barnes.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-laws, John and Linda Barnes of Rockwood, Jim and Dian Barnes of Dayton; sister, Johnnie Ferguson of Rockwood; brother, Frank Henderson of Jasper; four grandhcildren, William and Bubba Barnes, Gaye Dotson and Kimberly Wattenbarger; five great-grandchildren; and one special niece, Elizabeth Johnson of Rockwood.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 1, in the chapel of Evans Mortuary with Rev. Wayne Burnette and Rev. Ben Whittenbarger officiating. Interment followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood. Evans Mortuary in Rockwood was in charge of the arranagments.
Lena Patton Travis

Lena Patton Travis, of Dayton, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 92.
Born Oct. 15, 1906, in Rhea County, Mrs. Travis lived in Dayton all of her life. She retired from Kayser Roth Hosiery Company in Dayton, after many years. She was a member of Rhea Richland Seniors and First Baptist Church in Dayton.
Mrs. Travis was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Melinda Bell Patton; her husband, Lester Travis in 1968; and her daughter, Imogene Powell.
Survivors include her sons, Joe Travis of Cleveland, and Bobby Travis of Dayton; daughters, Helen Travis, Lennie Alice Sneed, Maxine White, Anne Roddy and Bennie Aikman, all of Dayton, and Shirley Barnett of Spring City; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 2, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. J. Milton Knox officiating. Burial was Saturday in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Linda Lee Hicks Brown

Linda Lee Hicks Brown, of Dayton, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at her residence. She was 32.
The daughter of Larry Kendall Hicks and Sara Russell Johnson, Ms. Brown was a Rhea County resident her entire life. She was a 1985 graduate of Rhea County High School.
She worked as a produce manager for IGA Grocery in Pikeville. Also, she was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her grandmother, Mary Lee Russell of Hixson; her mother, Sara Johnson of Coalmont, Tenn.; two sons, Cody and Dylan Brown of Dayton; one daughter, Kendra Brown of Dayton; one step-son, Michael Allen Brown of Pikeville; two brothers, Larry “Chip” Hicks and R.V. McClure, both of Dayton; one sister, Lanette Williams of Evensville; and one step-brother, Talion Johnson of Soddy-Daisy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 8, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Wilkey officiating. Interment will follow in Rhea Memory Gardens of Dayton. Family will receive visitors after 5 p.m., today, July 7.
Frieda Grace Dreas

Frieda Grace Dreas, of Graysville, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Chattanooga. She was 80.
Born in Brayton, Tenn., Mrs. Dreas lived in Takoma Park, Md., for many years. Then, she returned to Brayton where she had been for the last 25 years.
Mrs. Dreas was a taxi driver and a private duty nurse. She also attended Brayton Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and May (Cunningham) Gadd.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin Richard Dreas of Graysville; one son, Richard Dreas of Graysville; three brothers, John, Clifford and Donald Gadd, all of Graysville; four sisters, Margaret Shadwick, Clara Sincavage and Bertha Moore, all of Graysville, and Martha Donak of New Market, Va; one grandson, Richard Dreas II of Graysville; one granddaughter, Kelly Dreas of Graysville; and one great-grandson, Trey Dreas of Graysville.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 6, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Pastor David Jones and Elder Everett Brown officiating. Interment followed in Brayton Cemetery on Graysville Mountain. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Bob Gates

Bob Gates, of Athens, Tenn., died Sunday, July 4, 1999. He was 56.
A native of Ten Mile, Tenn., Mr. Gates was a resident of McMinn County for 35 years. He was also a member of Valley View Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Bessie Walden Gates, one sister, Juanita Johnson, and one brother, Rev. J.L. Gates.
Survivors include his wife, Gale Dewitt Gates of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Beth Gates and Chuck and Coleen Gates, all of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Andy Bredwell of Athens; one grandson, Haven Bredwell of Athens; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Karen Gates, Sam and Martha McCullough, and Ben and Geneva Gates, all of Niota, Tenn., and Lester and Kelly Gates of Dayton; several nieces and nephews; and his mother- and father-in-law, Earl and Louella Dewitt of Athens.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 6, in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with Minister Andy Dredwell officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m., today, July 7, at the Niota Cemetery. Bordwine Funeral Home in Etowah, Tenn., was in charge of arrangements.
