Roy Thompson

Roy Thompson, of Spring City, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Roane Medical Center in Harriman. He was 72.
Born in Crab Orchard, Tenn., Mr. Thompson was the son of the late Oscar and Parthenia Cox Thompson. He was the owner and operator of a logging business and attended Spring City Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl C. Thompson of Spring City; sons, Roy Glen, Donnie and Billy Joe Thompson of Spring City; daughters, Linda Sue Whitted of Decatur and Debra Jean Thompson of Dayton; sisters, Hazel Smith of Alloway, Tenn., and Rhodia Turner of Crossville; brothers, Gene, Kermit, James, Junior and Franklin Thompson of Spring City; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Sunday, July 18, at 3:30 p.m., in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home, with Rev. Allen Godsey and Rev. Lawrence Waller officiating. Burial will be in Spring City Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.
Neil H. Ray

Neil H. Ray, of Evensville, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 72.
A member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Evensville, Mr. Ray served on the Rhea County Election Commission. He was a retired farmer and livestock dealer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Nannie Ray.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Ray of Evensville; son, Rusty Ray of Evensville; daughter, Sue Moyers of Evensville, Myrna Ray of Soddy-Daisy; sisters, Blanche Starring of Hixson, Betty McCarter of Evensville, and Wanda Pittman of Dayton; brother, Arthur (Ott) Ray of Spring City; and grandchildren, Jill and Collin Moyers and Westin Ray, all of Evensville.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 16, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Rothwell and Rev. Felix Harris officiating. Burial was in Pierce Cemetery in Evensville. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smyrna Food Pantry.
Gertrude Morgan Johnson

Gertrude Morgan Johnson, of Dayton, died Thursday afternoon, July 8, 1999, at NHC of Oak Ridge. She was 93.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church in Dayton and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary 100. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and visiting with her family.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her son, Master Sgt. Bill J. Johnson, who died in Germany while serving in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeanne Johnson McCoy of Oak Ridge; sons, Johnny R. Johnson, and wife Noni, of Oak Ridge, and Robert M. Johnson of Chattanooga; daughter-in-law, Clara Johnson, widow of Bill J. Johnson; grandchildren, Robert E. McCoy, Patricia J. Carroll, Kathy J. Stewart, Teresa J. Galyon of Oak Ridge, Sandra J. Jones of Knoxville, Dr. David M. McCoy, George Johnson, Jacqueline J. Ring of Nashville, Steven A. McCoy of Sevierville, Darren M. Johnson of Dallas, Texas, and Ryan Johnson of Chattanooga; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 11, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. J. B. Morris officiating. Burial was in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton, with grandsons serving as pallbearers. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Miller Junior Vaughn

Miller Junior Vaughn, 62, of Dayton died at his home Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998. He was the son of the late Markless and Clarsie (Forster) Vaughn; brother, Claude Marshall Vaughn; three sister, Tennie Murphy, Clearie Bowman and Erlene Phillips.
Survivors include his wife, Civileen Vaughn of Dayton; two daughters, Linda K. Brown of Dayton and Shirley R. Meadows of Decatur, Tenn.; nine sons, David, J.C., Gary, Dewey, Clifford and Johnny Vaughn, all of Dayton, Paul Vaughn of Spring city, Claude Vaughn of Pikeville, Tenn., and M.J. Vaughn of Mobile, Ala.; three brothers, Robert, Ralph and James Vaughn, all of Overton County, Tenn.; 24 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, six daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at the Vaughn residence with Rev. Junior Bowman officiating. Interment followed the services in Cove Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
Maurice Clinton Smith

Maurice Clinton Smith, 39, of Soddy-Daisy, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Smith, and sister, Sandra Smith.
Survivors include two sons, Maurice Willis and Norris Willis, both of Bakewell; daughter, Shanetta Willis of Batesville, Miss.; father, Richard C. Smith of Bakewell; two brothers, Bruce and Julius Smith, both of Bakewell; and sister Tracy Garrett of Bakewell.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Pleasant Hill AME Zion Church in Bakewell with Revs. Ronald and Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow the services in Pleasant Hill AME Zion Church Cemetery in Bakewell. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
Grace Trotter

Grace Trotter, of Dayton, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at a local nursing home. She was 96.
Mrs. Trotter was the oldest member of Salem Baptist Church in Dayton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart Trotter; two brothers, L.B. (Funny) and Bruce Thomas; and two sisters, Bertha Watts and Aileen Collier.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 15, at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald and Dr. Mike Young officiating. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in Spence Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.
Etheleen W. Dover

Etheleen W. Dover, 88, of Spring City, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at Spring City Health Care Center.
A resident of the Spring City area since 1992, Mrs. Dover moved to Rhea County from Cherryville, N.C., where she taught school for the McDowell County Department of Education for 44 years and was a supervisor of instruction. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was a member of the O.E.S. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cherryville, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd A. Dover, and son, Charles Dover.
Survivors include a daughter, Eleanor D. Allison of Spring City; brother, John W. Webb of Cherryville, N.C.; sister, Nell Webb Mohney of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Spring City United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Allison and Dr. Ralph Mohney officiating. Burial took place in Cleveland Memorial Park, Boiling Springs, N.C., Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. Gertrude Morgan Johnson

Gertrude Morgan Johnson, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at a local nursing home. She was 93.
A member of First Baptist Church in Dayton, she was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, and a son, Bill J. Johnson, who died while serving in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include her daughter Jeanne McCoy of Oak Ridge; two sons, Johnny R. Johnson of Oak Ridge, and Robert M. Johnson of Chattanooga; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

S.D. Hillian

S.D. Hillian, of Dayton, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Soddy-Daisy Healthcare Center. He was 77.
Mr. Hillian retired from self-employment and attended St. Clair United Methodist Church in Spring City. He was a World War II veteran, having served three years with General George Patton’s unit of the European command—Medical Corps Unit. He received an honorable discharge from that service.
Survivors include his sisters, Norma H. Cooper and Sue H. Wilson, both of Chattanooga; brother, Rev. Jim Hillian of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 13, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. John Neese and Rev. Jim Hillian officiating. Kenneth O’Brian Suttles

Kenneth O’Brian Suttles, of Hixson, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 24.
Mr. Suttles worked as a mason and an electrician. He was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include his daughter, Ashley Renee Suttles of Hixson; son, Austin Chad Suttles of Hixson; mother and step-father, Janet and Curtis Hall of Hixson; father and step-mother, Ronnie and Donna Suttles of Dayton; brother, Chad Suttles of Hixson; step-brothers, Brian and Chris Hall, both of Dayton; step-sister, Tiffany Roddy of Dayton; grandparents, Peggy Jo Cummings of Hixson and Margie and Jennings Suttles of Dayton.

Ludd S. King

Ludd S. King, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in Lake City, Fla. He was 78.
Born Oct. 11, 1920, in Rhea County, Mr. King lived in Rhea County most of his life.
Mr. King retired from the U.S. Army as a World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rissie Taylor King on Nov. 20, 1997; and his parents John S. and Laura Pelfrey King.
Survivors include his daughters, Rose Cushman of Chattanooga and Mary Sue Wells of Soddy-Daisy; sons, Larry and Danny King, both of Rhea County; brothers, Forrest King of Chattanooga and Bundy King of Rhea County; sister, Iva Bunch of Hamilton County; and eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 9, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home, with Dr. Clankston Freeman officiating. Burial was in Hurst Cemetery in Rhea County. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
