Cordia Elizabeth Manies
Died: 08/10/1999

Cordia Elizabeth Manies, of Dayton, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 88.

Born in Rhea County, Mrs. Manies was the daughter of the late William Jesse and Maude Louise McCulley Strader. She was a homemaker by trade and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Manies; sisters, Bessie Rogers and Ellen (Tootsie) Mackie; and brothers, Fred Allen and Oley Strader.

Survivors include a special friend, Cheryl Vaughn Rector of Dayton; sisters, Lucille Rogers of Dallas, N.C., and Ruth Edwards of Spring City; brothers, Charles Strader of Rockwood, and Vines Strader of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m., at the Dayton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the service. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of the arrangments.

Carole Meyer-Webster
Died: 08/11/1999

Carole Meyer-Webster, of Dayton and Lafayette, Ga., died Saturday morning, Aug. 7, 1999. She was 53.

Born January 20, 1946, Mrs. Meyer-Webster was a radiologist at Rhea Medical Center. She loved horses and received a bronze medal for her horse in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 9, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Ray Myron Peavyhouse
Died: 08/08/1999

Ray Myron Peavyhouse, of Spring City, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 64.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Peavyhouse was the son of the late Hugh L. and Lona Webb Peavyhouse. A graduate of Spring City High School with 12 years of perfect attendance, Mr. Peavyhouse attended Tennessee Wesleyan College and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict serving in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years.

He was a teacher with the Rhea County Department of Education, served as Rhea County Clerk and Master for seven years, was former vice mayor of Spring City and served on the Spring City Commission.

Mr. Peavyhouse was a member of Dayton and Spring City Lions Club and of American Legion Post #203, Fleet Reserve Association, Naval Reserve Association and the past East Tennessee vice commander and third district commander of the Tennessee American Legion.

He was also a member of Tennessee State Employment Agency and International Association of Personnel in Employment Security. He worked for the State of Tennessee Department of Employment Security as a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialist and was the 1999 International Disabled Veterans Outreach Program of the year for the first time in Tennessee.

Mr. Peavyhouse was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Spring City. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nila Kay Peavyhouse.

Survivors include his wife, Shelby Jean Armes Peavyhouse of Spring City; daughters, Myra Kay Peavyhouse of Spring City, and Karen P. Lingar of Madison, Ala.; brother, Charles Edwin Peavyhouse of Hixson; sisters, Marguerite Millican of Dalton, Ga., and Chloe Curtain of Soddy-Daisy; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 10, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Burial was in Spring City Memorial Gardens will full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dayton Lions Club. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel J. Davis
Died: 08/12/1999

Hazel J. Davis, of Graysville, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Rhea County Nursing Home. She was 71.

Born June 3, 1928, in Polk County, Mrs. Davis lived in Graysville most of her life. She retired from Robinson Manufacturing Company after 22 years of employment. Mrs. Davis was a member of Graysville Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Nora Burgess Garren; husband, Jim William Davis who did April 25, 1991; daughter, Rachel Morgan; and sisters, Lois Davis and Ruth Long.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Joyce Davis, and Joanne and Tony Rankhorn, all of Graysville; granddaughter, Melissa Morgan of Graysville; God child, Darlene Thomas of Sale Creek; grandson-in-law, Malcolm Morgan of Graysville; step-grandchildren, Kristy Rankhorn of Homersville, Ga., and James Rankhorn of Camp LeJuene, N.C.; brothers, Fred Garren of Eppsworth, Ga., and Warden Garren of Copperhill, Tenn.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Sunday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Pastor David Jones and Elder Tommy Britt officiating. Burial was in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Beatrice Irene Tumlin
Died: 08/11/1999

Beatrice Irene Tumlin, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 78.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mrs. Tumlin was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Stella Maynor; husband, Woodrow Tumlin; and three brothers, James, Dean and Luther Maynor.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty J. Bischof of Dayton; son, James Tumlin of Dayton; sisters, Beulah Crawley of Dayton, and Alice Cravens of Georgia; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Milton Knox and Rev. George Morgan officiating. Burial was in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Glen Whitted
Died: 08/12/1999

Glen Whitted, of Spring City, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 62.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Whitted was the son of the late Kim and Cora Culvahouse Whitted. He was a member of Yellow Creek Baptist Church in Spring City and retired this year from the Manchester Tanks & Equipment Company in Crossville.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Whitted; and grandson, Jonathan Strickland.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Pendergrass Whitted of Spring City; daughters, Katie Smith and Peggy Strickland, both of Spring City, and Wanda Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sons, Charles and Richard Whitted, both of Crossville, and Steve and Tim Whitted, both of Spring City; brothers, Junior Edgar Whitted of Ten Mile, and Jack Whitted of Sacramento, Calif.; sister, Delta Sutton of Rockwood; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted today, Sunday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m., at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Ten Mile, with Rev. Clankston Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Ewing Cemetery in Spring City. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of the arrangements.

Gertrude Z. Holland
Died: 08/15/1999

Gertrude Z. Holland, of Dayton, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at her home. She was 85.

Born Oct. 29, 1914, in North Carolina, Mrs. Holland was a homemaker by trade. She lived in North Carolina until 1930, then in Big Spring, Tenn., from 1930 to 1950. Since 1950, she lived in Dayton.

Mrs. Holland was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Dayton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Belle Davis Wilson; daughters, Francis Lucille Wilson and Barbara Watson Geiger; brothers, Glen and Drew Wilson; and sister, Ethel Runyon.

Survivors include her husband, Carl (Ted) Holland of Dayton; daughters, Betty Simpson of Evensville, Eulah Cunnyngham of Dayton, and Jewel Dean Briggs of Hendersonville, N.C.; sons, Jimmy Holland of Evensville, and J. Loyd Holland of Dayton; brothers, John and Frank Wilson of Dayton, and Verlin Wilson of Dunlap; sister, Wanda Sluder of Cleveland; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Lands, Rev. Wayne Nelson and Rev. Leland Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Spring City Memorial Gardens. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

John Lee Roberts
Died: 08/15/1999

John Lee Roberts, of Graysville, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 72.

Born April 13, 1927, in Mississippi, Mr. Roberts lived in Graysville for the past ten years. Previously he lived in Marshall, Olivet, and Bellevue, Mich. He was a retired machinist from Airway Company in Olivet, and a member of the Moose Lodge for many years.

A member of Graysville United Methodist Church, Mr. Roberts was a Seaman first class in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lee Roberts Sr. and Mildred Hardaway Roberts; daughter, Dolores Dobbertein; sister, Florence Lucille Roberts; and brother, William Edward Roberts.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Roberts of Graysville; sons, Tommy L. Roberts of Burlington, Mich., and John Paul (Jake) Roberts of Tekonsha, Mich.; sisters, Rosie (Harold) Penney of Soddy-Daisy, Sadie Ferguson of Battle Creek, Mich., and Barbara (Donald) Roush of Graysville; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Norman officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Jimmy Eugene Mawby
Died: 08/18/1999

Jimmy Eugene Mawby, of Spring City, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, on the day of his birth.

Survivors include his parents, Robert Mawby and Kelly Forsythe of Spring City; and grandmothers, Phyllis Forsythe of Spring City, and Carol Martin of Glen Rose, Texas.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, Aug. 20, in Babyland in Rhea Memory Gardens with Dr. Roger Rothwell officiating. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Dillon Nunley Robinson
Died: 08/19/1999

Dillon Nunley Robinson, of Athens, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, on the day of his birth.

Survivors include his parents, Jeffery Robinson and Amy Nunley of Athens; brother, Cody Robinson of Athens; grandparents, Jesse and Mary Sue Robinson of Athens, Larry Nunley of Athens, and Kathy Nunley of Englewood; and great-grandparents, Arthur and Ada Nunley of Athens.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, Aug. 20, in Babyland in Rhea Memory Gardens with Dr. Roger Rothwell officiating. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangments.
