Velma Corneilia Atkinson
Died: 08/20/1999

Velma Cornelia Atkinson, of Evensville, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Laurelbrook Nursing Home on Dayton Mountain. She was 93.

Born July 13, 1906, in Rainbow City, Ala., Mrs. Atkinson lived in the Clear Creek community in Evensville since 1928. She was a homemaker by trade and attended Clear Creek Baptist Church in Evensville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeff and Melissa Burns Brady; husband, Elvia R. Atkinson who died Nov. 3, 1973; and son, James E. Atkinson.

Survivors include her son, John C. Atkinson of Evensville; daughter, Lila C. Hughes of Jasper; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 21, at Smyrna Cemetery in Evensville with Rev. Everett Powers officiating. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernon Burnette
Died: 08/23/1999

Vernon Burnette, of Dayton, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 71.

A former resident of Soddy-Daisy, Mr. Burnette was of the Church of God faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Barber Burnette.

Survivors include his son, Herbert Burnette of Ball Ground, Ga.; daughters, Barbara Joyce Morris, Lynda Sneed and Wilma Benton, all of Soddy-Daisy, Carolyn White of Jasper, Tenn., Janet Sherman of Niota, Tenn.; brothers, John J. Burnette of Soddy-Daisy, and Jack Burnette of Linden, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Bice and Rev. John Butler officiating. Visitation will be Thursday after 12 noon. Burial will be in Smyrna Cemetery in Evensville. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

William Benjamin Pryor
Died: 08/20/1999

William Benjamin Pryor, of Evensville, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville. He was 29.

Born Dec. 22, 1969, in Indiana, Penn., Mr. Pryor lived in the Spring City/Evensville area. He served in the U.S. Army during Desert Storm and was a laborer by trade.

Mr. Pryor was preceded in death by his father, Frank B. Pryor.

Survivors include his mother, Ann Pryor of Evensville; and son, William P. Pryor of Spring City.

Graveside services were conducted Monday, Aug. 23, in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Clyde Callaway Runyan
Died: 08/21/1999

Clyde Callaway Runyan, of Dayton, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at his home on Black Oak Ridge Road. He was 75.

Born April 11, 1924, Mr. Runyan was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army with foreign service and combat in the Northern Solomons, Southern Philippines, and South West and Asiatic Pacific. He received Citations and Awards, an Oak Leaf Cluster, a Purple Heart, an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct and Liberation Medal with one star.

Retired from the Tennessee Department of Transportation with 16 years of service, he was a member of the Tennessee State Employees Association.

A member of the Church of God in Dayton, he was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Lee Runyan; mother, Mary Houston Runyan; father, Charlie F. Runyan; and son-in-law, Randell Hoyt Thurman.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Pogue Runyan; daughter, Patricia (Patti) Thurman of Dayton; sons, Edward (Fly) and Daryl Runyan of Dayton, and Charles Runyan of Austell, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Gerald (Pete) Thurman, Stacia Williamson, Derrick Hale, Kyle, Brooklynn, Annika and Dustin Runyan, Ben Bell and Ciera Bennett; great-grandson, Randy Thurman; sister, Audeau Carden Burdett; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 23, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Darrell Simpson of Rossville, Ga., and Dennis Elliott and Rick Brenizer of Cleveland officiating. Pallbearers were Chuck Keller, Troy Byrd, Mitchell Sherrill, Leroy Calfee, Leonard Caraway, Steve Abraham, Ralph Everett and Tim Gossett. Memorial Home Health Care was the honorary pallbearer. Singing was by Tommy Burdett and Margaret Harvey. Burial was in Smyrna Cemetery in Evensville. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Addie Mae Holden
Died: 09/12/1999

Addie Mae Holden, of Graysville, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her residence. She was 71.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda White; two sisters; two brothers; her mother and father; and her husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Wanda Vincent of Spring City; son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Peggy Clark of Graysville; adopted son, Greg Roddy Holden; step-son, Jim Holden; step-dautghter, Jo Craig; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 11, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clay Moreland officiating. Pallbearers were Scott Vincent, Clyde Clark Jr., Kevin James, Ray Miles Jr., Bill Hickman and Grady Reel. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles F. Mullins
Died: 09/14/1999

Charles F. Mullis, of Graysville, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at his residence. He was 58.

Mr. Mullis was an army veteran and the former owner of Chattanooga Chimney Sweep. He was a member of Creeks Bend Golf Club and a former coach of Little League baseball and football for Lakeside Elementary Eagles. In 1973, he was Little League Coach of the Year. He was employed by Hamilton County at Tennessee River Park.

Mr. Mullis was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Allie Reynolds Mullis.

Survivors include his wife, Billie R. Mullis of Graysville; son, Cole Mullis of Salem, Ore.; daughter, Cathy Mullis of Georgia; step-daughter, Lisli Carter of Dayton; step-son, Chris Pittman of Chattanooga; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Les Fauntleroy officiating. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, Sept. 15, after 2 p.m. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Olen Underwood
Died: 09/11/1999

Robert Olen “Bobby” Underwood, of Sweetwater, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999. He was 56.

Mr. Underwood was a retired builder and a member of Lee’s Chapel Baptist Church in Sweetwater. He was preceded in death by his father, Olen F. Underwood.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Teresa J. Underwood of Sweetwater; sons and daughter-in-law, Troy Anthony and Shelly Iles of Chattanooga, Max Edward Iles of Sweetwater, Mark Gregory Iles of Madisonville, and Robert Scott Underwood of Sweetwater; mother, Agnes Underwood of Sweetwater; step-father, L.E. Passmore of Sweetwater; grandchildren, Morelan Alyssa Underwood and Ashley and Jessica Iles.; sisters, Alice Faye Randolph of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Carol Harris of Sweetwater; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Kyker Funeral Home in Sweetwater, with Rev. Lester Gunn officiating. Internment will be today, Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m., in West View Cemetery in Sweetwater. Kyker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Roy Edgar Williams Jr.
Died: 09/12/1999

Roy Edgar Williams Jr., of Dayton, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his residence. He was 29.

Survivors include his mother, Vergie Webb Williams of Groveland, Fla.; sisters, Teresa Douglas of Dayton, Elizabeth Crumpton of Gotha, Fla., and Bonita and Patricia Williams, both of Groveland; several nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Ewing officiating. Pallbearers will be Allen Daniels, James Douglas, David Whitaker, James Wilson, Ronnie Douglas and Eddie Kerley. Burial will be in Spivey Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert (Bobby Gene) Thomas Milligan
Died: 09/17/1999

Robert (Bobby Gene) Thomas Milligan, of Dayton, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at his home. He was 72.

Born April 7, 1927, Mr. Milligan was a lifelong resident of Rhea County. He retired from Dayton Products as a sheet metal worker. A sports and auto racing enthusiast, Mr. Milligan served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Kitty) Milligan of Dayton; daughter, Audrey Luann Milligan of Dayton; brother, Roy Milligan of South Carolina; sisters, Ruth Sharpe of South Carolina, and Mary Davis of Spring City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Herrell officiating. Burial will be in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Alvis McDonald Smith
Died: 09/14/1999

Alvis McDonald (Don) Smith, of Clarksville, Tenn., died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He was 76.

Born Dec. 9, 1922, in Rhea County, Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was of the Baptist faith and graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 1948. He was a member of Queen City Masonic Lodge #761 and the retired owner of Don’s Tires in Clarksville.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest H. and Lillie Maude (Denton) Smith; wife, Shelia Ann Blair Smith; and brother, Denton (Prof) Smith.

Survivors include his son, Darrell Smith of Clarksville; daughter, Vicki McCowan of Gainsville, Va.; grandchildren, Dylan and Shellie Smith, both of Clarksville, and Stacie and J.R. McCowan, both of Gainsville; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, Sept. 17, at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Clarksville with Rev. Jeff Burris officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Toon and Aubrey Flagg. Pallbearers were Pete Borris, Spencer and Billy Toon, Kim Smith, Larry Carter and Johnny Martelli. McReynolds—Nave & Larson Funeral Home in Clarksville, Tenn., was in charge of the arrangements.
