Juanita L. Tennyson
Died: 09/16/1999
Juanita L. Tennyson, of Dayton, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. She was 84.
Mrs. Tennyson was of the Protestant faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Tennyson; sister, Dorothy Lillard; and brothers, Bo and Dean Corvin.
Survivors include her nephews, Paul Corvin of Robertsville, Ala., and Ava Lillard of Dallas, Texas; nieces, Lenora Barber of Chattanooga, and Margaret Corvin of Dayton; two grandnieces; and two grandnephews.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday, Sept. 19, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Les Fauntleroy officiating. Burial will be in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton at a later date. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy May Haag
Died: 09/23/1999
Dorothy May Haag, of Dayton, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Spring City Care Center. She was 90.
Born March 1, 1909, in Myerstown, Pa., Mrs. Haag lived in Myerstown most of her life and in Dayton since 1988. She was a homemaker by trade and was a Goldwing Touring Association ambassador. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Myerstown and of its Women’s Fellowship.
Mrs. Haag was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Haag; and parents, Jeremiah and Stella (Klick) Risser.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Robert Bitler of Dayton; Betty Zohn of Myerstown; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m., at the Church of the Brethren in Myerstown with Rev. Glenn Hassinger officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral services at the church. Burial will be in Zion United Methodist Cemetery in Myerstown. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.
Ruby E. Meadows
Died: 09/18/1999
Ruby E. Meadows, of Spring City, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. She was 82.
Mrs. Meadows was a former resident of Hurricane, W.V., and a member of Peakland Baptist Church in Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Bryant Meadows; parents, Joseph and Laura Eskew Epling; son, Marco E. Meadows; five sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include her sons, Adrian Meadows of Ooltewah, Tenn., and Doyle Meadows of Decatur; daughter, Nada Smith of Spring City; brother, Arnold Epling of Hurricane, W.V.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 20, in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home in Decatur, with Rev. Taylor Colbaugh officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Cemetery in Decatur. Bowers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Carroll A. Wampler
Died: 09/22/1999
Carroll A. Wampler, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at his residence. He was 57.
Mr. Wampler was a member of South Dayton Church of God and was a lifelong resident of Rhea County. He was a Licensed Practical Nurse for several area hospitals.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Earl Wampler.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Mae Wampler of Dayton; mother, Morene Wampler of Dayton; sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Alan Wampler and Mathew Christopher and Dawn Wampler, all of Dayton; step-sons, Ricky, Mickey, Bobby and Tommy Gothard and Homer, Johnny and Billy Godsey, all of Dayton; step-daughter, Dianna Gothard of Dayton; sisters, Sherry Wampler Keith and Barbara Wampler Shipley, both of Dayton; three grandchildren including Cody and Brandi Wampler, all of Dayton; 11 step-grandchildren, all of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews, all of Dayton.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 18, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. David Crabtree, Rev. Don Fox and Rev. Donald Ray Arnold officiating. Burial was in Garrison Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Billie June Austin

Billie June Austin, of Dayton, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 71.
Mrs. Austin was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church in Evensville.
She was preceded in death by her father, Obie Austin; mother, Haggie Whitfield Austin; and brother, Gene Austin. Survivors included her sister, Helen Jewell of Dayton; brother, Wallace Jewell of Harriman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 25, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Burial followed in Smryna Cemetery in Evensville. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
George Ed Reed
Died: 09/27/1999
George Ed Reed, of Grandview, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was 63.
A native of Grandview, Mr. Reed was the son of the late Lonas and Mildred Jane McFalls Reed. He retired from Dayton Products after 25 years of service and was a member of Johnson Chapel Baptist Church in Grandview.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Jones and Mary Lou Ollinger.
Survivors include his wife, Donna N. Reed of Grandview; three sons, Rusty Reed of Stockbridge, Ga., Steve Curtain of Dayton and Rick Reed of Dayton; two daughters, Violet Graves of Grandview and Rose Marie Robinson of Chattanooga; one brother, Arthur Reed of Grandview; one sister, Jessie Tallent of Spring City; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 25, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. John Pair officiating. Interment followed in Stebbins Cemetery in Grandview. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.
Berta May Reed
Died: 03/23/2001
Berta May Reed, of Spring City, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at her residence. She was 80.
Born in Stratford, New Zealand, Mrs. Reed and her husband moved to Spring City in 1983 from Pittsburgh, Pa.
The daughter of the late Albert and Martha Moir Walker, she was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spring City where she served as an elder. Mrs. Reed was also a member of GFWC’s Spring City chapter and was elected as the International Woman of the Year.
Survivors include her husband, Franklyn L. Reed Sr. of Spring City; sons, Franklyn L. Reed Jr. of Spring City, and Allen W. Reed of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Molly Kay of Inglewood, New Zealand; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Spring City with Rev. Gary Aven officiating. Burial was held Monday in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made tot the American Cancer Society. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.
John William Beene

John William (J.W.) Beene, of Graysville, died Sept. 25, 1999, at his home. He was 79.
Born Sept. 26, 1919, Mr. Beene was a native and lifelong resident of Rhea County. A graduate of Rhea Central High School, Mr. Beene retired as an operating engineer. He then became supervisor of the Rhea County Road Commission and retired after 12 years.
Mr. Beene was a member of the International Operating Engineers Local 324. He loved horses and buggies, trucks and gardening. Mr. Beene was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Anderson and Loucretia (Teeters) Beene; and his wife, Lillian (Lucille) McBroom Beene.
Survivors include his sons, John Richard Beene of Graysville, and Mark S. Beene of Dayton; daughters, Sharon Wilkey of Dayton, and Johnnie Long of Graysville; sister, Velma Crawley of Chattanooga; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 27, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home, with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald and Rev. Marion Brock officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Malcolm Emmett Shelton
Died: 09/26/1999
Malcolm Emmett Shelton, of Dayton, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Memorial North Park Hospital in Chattanooga. He was 87.
Born Aug. 22, 1912, in Dayton, Mr. Shelton lived in Dayton most of his life. A retired truck driver for Suburban Manufacturing Company, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Shelton was a member of Faith Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lillie Mae (Doren) Shelton; and his wife, Thelma (Arnold) Shelton who died March 1, 1999.
Survivors include his sons, Neil Shelton of Hixson, and Jackie Shelton of Soddy-Daisy; sister, Leona Thurman of Hixson; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Faith Independent Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Wilburn Hartaman and Rev. Ken Fugate officiating. Burial was in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Hattie Mae Whitehead

Hattie Mae Whitehead, of Harriman, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, at her home. She was 77.
Mrs. Whitehead was a member of Marks Chapel in Harriman. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl McKenzie; son, Noah Lee Roberts; grandson, Michael Eugene Roberts; brother, Robert McKenzie; and sisters, Ruth Rucker and Irene Williams.
Survivors include her husband, William Clarence Whitehead Sr. of Harriman; sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Doris Roberts of Hephzibah, Ga., Jackie and Felicia Roberts of Spring City, James and Carol Roberts of Knoxville, Clarence Whitehead Jr. and wife, Lorene, of Kingston, Tenn., Tommy and Geneva Whitehead of Harriman, Samuel and Mary Whitehead of Harrodburg, Ky., and George and Lucy Whitehead of Danville, Ky.; daughters and son-in-law, Edna Upton of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Carolyn Roddy of Harriman, and Peggy and Eugene Cozart of Rockwood; 48 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Nannie Mae Flemmings of Harriman, and Mae Dale Mayott of Sweetwater; brothers-in-law, Nathaniel Roberts and wife, Dolenem of Andersonville, S.C., Charlie Roberts and wife, Letha, of Athens, and James Bailey of Sweetwater; aunts, Julie McKenzie of Dayton, and Henrietta Smith and husband, Herbert, of Dayton.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 2, in the chapel of Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, Tenn., with Rev. James Guthrie officiating. Interment followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood. Evans Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
