Harold G. Kite
Died: 09/18/1999

Harold G. Kite, of Dayton, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at a family residence. He was 47.

Mr. Kite was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Kite.

Survivors include his son, Chris Kite of Dayton; brother, David Kite of Dayton; sister, Connie Kite of Dayton; aunts, Sue Brock of Dayton, Bonnie Jones of Soddy-Daisy, and Frances Jones of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 20, in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Wilkey officiating. Burial was in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel Sexton Arnold
Died: 09/21/1999

Ethel Sexton Arnold, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Soddy-Daisy Health Care Center. She was 95.

Born Feb. 11, 1904, in Dayton, Mrs. Arnold lived in Dayton until 1984, when she moved to Chattanooga. She was a homemaker by trade and the oldest living member of First Baptist Church in Dayton. Mrs. Arnold was a former charter member of Garrison Baptist Church in Dayton.

Mrs. Arnold was preceded in death by her parents, James Polk and Ellen (Walker) Sexton; husband, C.L. (Chub) Arnold; brothers, Lee, Patrick, Buck, Clay and Robert (Bob) Sexton; sisters, Delia Norris and Edna Henderson.

Survivors include her sons, James W. Arnold of Hixson, and Morgan B. Arnold of Dayton; daughter, Patricia M. Arnold of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Darrell Arnold of Chattanooga, Lamar Arnold of Nashville, Lynn Wilson of Sarasota, Fla., David Arnold of Smyrna, Ga., and Susan Booker of Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Kimberly Arnold of Statesboro, Ga., and Joshua and Erin Wilson, both of Sarasota.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 23, at noon, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. J.B. Morris and Rev. J. Milton Knox officiating. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, Sept. 22, after 5 p.m. Burial will be in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Lorraine Lesley Gilley
Died: 11/30/2000

Lorraine Lesley Gilley, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in a local hospital. She was 50.

Born in England, Mrs. Gilley became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1968.

A member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge, she was the chief executive officer for River Counties Association of Realtors and served on the Cleveland Utilities Board of Directors.

Survivors include her husband, Michael D. Gilley of Cleveland; sons and daughters-in-law, Eric Wayne and Sherie Gilley of Sulphur, La., Sean M. Gilley of Atlanta, Ga., and M. Ryan and Valerie Gilley of Cleveland, Tenn.; parents, Jean and Duane Newman of Lexington, Ky.; brothers, Stuart Reynolds of England, and Paul and Glen Newman, both of Lexington, Ky.; half-sister, Nicky Eager of Henley-On-Arden, Worcester, England; grandsons, Tanner Reice and James Michael Gilley; and father- and mother-in-law, Paul J. and Wilodean Gilley of Navaree Beach, Fla.

A requiem will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with Revs. Craig Morgan and Rob Gieselmann officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Parish Hall. Internment will be held privately.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 5, Cleveland, TN 37364, or the American Lung Association, 1808 West End Ave., Suite 514, Nashville, TN 37203. Grissom Funeral Home in Cleveland is in charge of the arrangements.

Hedy M. Dayton
Died: 12/04/2000

Hedy M. Dayton, of Dayton, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at her home. She was 76.

Born March 27, 1924, in Rhea County, Mrs. Dayton lived in Rhea County most of her life. A homemaker, she was of the Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar Dayton.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Bowen and Donna Price, both of Dayton; son, Robert Brown of Dayton; grandchildren, Bobby (Ike) Hancock Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Angie Headlee, Gina McPherson and Lisa Price, all of Dayton; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 6 in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Revs. Steve and Tony White officiating. Burial followed in Spivey Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Jimmy (Buddy) Harris Jewell
Died: 12/03/2000

Jimmy (Buddy) Harris Jewell, of Dayton, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at his home. He was 80.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Jewell was a retired dairy farmer and served on the Spence Cemetery Committee for many years. A former Rhea County school bus driver, he was a member of New Union Baptist Church. Mr. Jewell was also an avid fox hunter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Carrie (Roddy) Jewell; brother, Roddy Jewell; and sister, Gladys Barr.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jewell of Dayton; daughter, Judy Mulkey of Dayton; son, Roddy Jewell of Dayton; sisters, Lorene (Tootsie) Lavender and Naomi Majors, both of Dayton; and grandchildren, Jamie and Clint Jewell and Kelly Dotson.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating. Burial will follow in Spence Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Robbie Lee Dixon Jewell
Died: 12/01/2000

Robbie Lee Dixon Jewell, of Dayton, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at her home. She was 83.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mrs. Jewell was a member of Ogden Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank A. and Mary Belle McMillian Dixon; brothers, Bob and Bill Dixon; and sisters, Sally Cate Helton, Ada Matherley and Marie Hendrix.

Survivors include her husband, Alton Jewell of Dayton; sons, Agnew, Stanley and Rev. Jimmy Jewell, all of Dayton; daughter, Mary Frances Farnsworth of Hixson; brother, Woodrow Dixon of Red Bank; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Revs. Alan Winkler, Allen Jewett and Jimmy Jewell officiating. Burial followed in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Jesse Gaston Shields
Died: 11/30/2000

Jesse Gaston Shields, of Spring City, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Rhea Medical Center.

Born in Morton, Miss., Mr. Shields moved to Rhea County in 1971 from Greeneville, Ky. He retired in 1981 after working 30 years as an electrical engineer for Tennessee Valley Authority.

A graduate of Mississippi State University, Mr. Shields worked on the Manhattan Project in Washington state and was a member and past president of the Kiwanis of Spring City. A former Spring City commissioner, he was a member of the Rhea Medical Center Board of Directors and of First Presbyterian Church of Spring City where he served as an elder.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Anslem and Ara Gaston Shields; and sisters, Margaret Liles and Laurie Lovett.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Morehead Shields of Spring City; daughters, Aledia McDonald of Franklin, Tenn., and Jessica Flowers of Fairfax, Va.; sister, Betsy Scivicque of Shreveport, La.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Spring City with Rev. Gary Aven officiating. Burial followed in Spring City Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.

Kathleen D. Kewitz
Died: 12/05/2000

Kathleen D. Kewitz, of Archbold, Ohio, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at her daughter’s home near Archbold. She was 78.

Born Sept. 3, 1922, in Johnstown, Pa., Mrs. Kewitz married Jack Kewitz on Nov. 29, 1948. She lived in Solon, Ohio, retired in Spring City and moved to Archbold in 1997. An office manager and accountant at Town and Country Publishings in Aurora, Ohio, Mrs. Kewitz was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Rosary Altar Society in Archbold and of St. Bridget Catholic Church and Rosary Altar Society in Dayton. A lifelong member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Solon, she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Kewitz; infant son, Joseph Kewitz; parents, Roy and Rachael Withers; brother, Edwin Withers; and sister, Charlotte Taylor.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Bradley Cousino of Archbold, Ohio, and Susan and Robert Murgacz of Johnstown, Ohio; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Callen of Johnstown, Pa.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at Short Funeral Home in Archbold with Father Gary M. Ferguson officiating. A mass will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Dayton with internment following in Spring City Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Williams and Fulton counties. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of local arrangements.

Stephen (Steve) Ray Smith
Died: 11/16/2000

Stephen (Steve) Ray Smith, of Graysville, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was 37.

A roofer by trade, Mr. Smith attended Unity Full Gospel Church in Sale Creek.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Noel Ray and Juanita Suttles Smith; and brother, Ronnie Shipley.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Jo Caraway Smith of Graysville; sons, Stephen R. Smith Jr. of Tenn., and Anthony Shane Potter of Dayton; daughter, Starlena Lents of Chattanooga; step-sons, Michael and Jason Caraway, both of Battle Creek, Mich.; step-dad and mother, Donald and Lola Shipley of Sale Creek; step-mother, Freda Smith of Dayton; sisters, Kathy Smith, Annette Goins and Anita White, all of Dayton; special friends, "Mom" and "Papa"; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Nov. 19 in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Lester Gates officiating. Burial followed in May-Shipley Cemetery in Sale Creek. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
