Angela Swafford Wilkie

Angela Swafford Wilkie, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at her home. She was 25.
Born March 9, 1975, in Rhea County, Mrs. Wilkie lived in Rhea County all of her life. A homemaker, she enjoyed horseback riding and softball and was a member of Vine Grove Methodist Church in Dayton.
Survivors include her husband, Brad Wilkie of Dayton; son, Dillon Creasman of Dayton; mother and step-father, Mary and Bill White of Dayton; father and step-mother, David and Karen Swafford of Spring City; grandparents, Coval and Lucille Swafford of Spring City; and sister, Melissa Travis of Evensville.
Funeral services were conducted Friday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Lynn Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Herbert Donald Barry Sr.
Died: 12/07/2000
Herbert Donald Barry Sr., of Bastrop, Texas, died Thurday, Dec. 7, 2000, at South Austin Hospital. He was 82.
A veteran of World War II who served in Panama guarding the Panama Canal, Mr. Barry retired from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in 1980 and moved to Spring City in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Frances Barry.
Survivors include his daughter, Roseanne E. Pryor of Brenham, Texas; sons, Herbert D. Barry Jr. of Ridgecrest, Ca., John D. Barry of Baltimore, Md., Peter D. Barry of Shrewsbury, Pa., Stephan D. Barry of Yoe, Pa., Charles D. Barry of Bastrop, Texas, and Joseph D. Barry of Shrewsbury, Pa.; brothers, Fred Barry of Baltimore, Md., and Leo V. Barry of Capitol Heights, Md.; sisters, Marian Bush of Frederick, Md., and Eleanor Strum of Meriman, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church in Harriman, Tenn. Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home with a Rosary service immediately following. Burial will be in Spring City Memorial Gardens.

Russell Johnson Sharp

Russell Johnson Sharp, of Dayton, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at his home. He was 72.
Mr. Sharp moved to Rhea County in 1978 from Hixson and was a member of Dayton First Baptist Church. A former teacher of Crusaders and Sunday school class, he was chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Mr. Sharp was a retired maintenance and welding supervisor with Dupont, having served 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, W.H. and Clara Hutson Sharp; grandson, Brian Noel Arp; four brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Patterson Sharp of Dayton; son, Russell M. Sharp of Harrison, Tenn.; daughters, Billie Jo Arp of Cumming, Ga., Cheryl Vandergriff of Middle Valley, Tenn., and Terri Pelfrey of Dayton; sisters, Velma Wright and Hazel Edwards, both of Flintville, Tenn., Irene Simmons of Elora, Tenn., Gertrude Ogle of Red Bank and Louise Barnes of Dayton; brother, Leon Sharp of McMinnville, Tenn., R.A. Sharp of Hixson, and Joe Sharp of Dayton; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Hanna officiating. Burial followed in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Earl D. Ladd

Earl D. Ladd, of Grandview, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 74.
A native and lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Ladd had been employed by the Rhea County Highway Department for 16 years and was a former member of the Rhea County Commission.
A member of Grandview Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rolly Burton and Nancy Alice Osborne Ladd; and brother, Chester Ladd.
Survivors include his wife, Ava Lee Reed Ladd of Grandview; daughter, Fran Manning of Spring City; sons, Phillip and Eddie Ladd, both of Spring City; brother, Burton Ladd of Spring City; sisters, Leona Loden of Grandview, Ollie Ladd of Spring City, and Rita Thornberry of Detroit, Mich.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Grandview Baptist Church with Dr. Hollis Greene and Rev. Mart Olsen officiating. Burial followed in Spring City Memorial Gardens. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of the arrangements.
Euel (Robert) Tate Sr.
Died: 12/11/2000
Euel (Robert) Tate Sr., of Evensville, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at his residence. He was 60.
Born June 14, 1940, in Georgia, to the late Clyde and Avie Cordelia (Pate) Tate, Mr. Tate lived in Rhea County most of his life.
Retired from Tennessee Valley Authority where he worked as a carpenter and locksmith, Mr. Tate was a member of Carpenter Local # 74. He loved hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine (Helton) Tate of Churchill, Tenn.; son, Euel (Robert) Tate Jr. of Evensville; daughters, Roberta Tate Janow of Dayton, and Summer Tate of Churchill, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and brother, Johnny Tate of Spring City.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Russell officiating. Burial followed in Spivey Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Bernice (Housley) Arnold

Bernice (Housley) Arnold, of Dayton, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at her home. She was 90.
A lifelong resident of Dayton, Mrs. Arnold was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Emmit Arnold; sisters, Flora Arnold and Allie Shaver; and brothers, James and Earl Housley.
Survivors include her son, William R. Arnold of Dayton; sisters, Mary Housley and Alma Pearl Suttles, both of North Carolina; brothers, Jessie, Cecil, Broyles and Johnny Housley, all of Dayton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Bailey Hawk

Bailey Hawk, of Evensville, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at his home. He was 83.
Born June 16, 1917, in Rhea County, Mr. Hawk lived in Rhea County all of his life. A lumberman and farmer by trade, he was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Ida Pearl (Pelfrey) Hawk; one brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Robbie Jane (Roberts) Hawk of Evensville; sisters, Blanche Swafford of Dayton, and Emma Davis of Evensville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Revs. Roger Rothwell and Elige Dunn officiating. Burial followed in Smyrna Cemetery in Evensville. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
Ruby Mae Miller

Ruby Mae Miller, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at Rhea County Nursing Home in Dayton. She was 82.
Mrs. Miller was retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery Company and a charter member of Maple Springs Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Jackson Miller; parents, Monroe and Lillie Dunn Thomas; brothers, Ernest, James, Jesse and Junior Thomas; and sister, Effie Ingle.
Survivors include her son, Lester (Dick) Miller of Dayton; daughter, Viola (Tootsie) Gravett of Dayton; sisters, Erma Thurman, Ima Jean Suttles and Ivadell Conley, all of Dayton; brother, Arthur Thomas of Evensville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Margie Ellen Stephens

Margie Ellen Stephens, of Dayton, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at her daughter’s home in Seneca, S.C. She was 76.
A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mrs. Stephens was a member of Watts Bar Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Virgil (Steve) Stephens; daughter, Ellen Carney; and sons, Mitchell and Wayne Stephens.
Survivors include her daughters, Liz Tipton of Evensville, Jo McCarver of Dayton, Hazel Aviles of Seneca, S.C., and Sandra Davis of Smyrna, Tenn.; son, Leo Stephens of Dayton; step-daughters, Pearl Minnis of Harrison, Tenn., Bernadine Agnew of Ooltewah, Tenn., Frankie Morgan of Harrison, Tenn., and Betty Ann Dawson of Harrison, Tenn.; step-sons, Virgil Stephens of Soddy-Daisy, and Millard Stephens of Chattanooga; sister, Pauline Johnson of Evensville; half-sister, Irene Amos of Lenoir City, Tenn.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
