James E. Renfro
Died: 10/25/1998

James E. Renfro, of Dayton, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 69.

Survivors include his sister, Jessee Lou Renfro, and niece, Wilma Johnson of Dayton.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment followed the services in Spring City Memorial Gardens. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Teddy Carlos Hickman
Died: 10/30/1998

Teddy Carlos Hickman, of Dayton, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was 47.

Born April 15, 1951, in Rhea County, Mr. Hickman was a resident of Rhea County all his life. He worked as a sheet matal mechanic for Goins Heat and Air for many years. He was the son of Frank and Adessa (Johnson) Hickman. He was a very social person who loved to “cut up.” He was a member of Sale Creek Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Barnes Hickman of Dayton; daughter, Carla Fisher of Dayton; three sons, Stacy Hickman, Chris Hickman and Brad Hickman, all of Dayton; five sisters, Bessie McCloud, Frances Long, Sissy Byrd, Irene Killough, all of Dayton, and Sheila Phillips of Spring City; five brothers, George Hickman, Harold Hickman, Lonnie Hickman, Roy Hickman and William “Boot” Hickman, all of Dayton; and two grandchildren, Caleb Hickman and Paige Hickman, both of Dayton.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Bolton officiating. Interment followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Walter Ray Houston
Died: 11/01/1998

Walter Ray (Sam) Houston, of Dayton, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in a Chattanooga area hospital. He was 83.

Mr. Houston was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and of the Baptist Faith. He was a member of Rhea Springs F&AM Lodge 310, lifelong member of American Legion Post 100 Brady Williams in Dayton. He is the retired owner and operator of Sam’s Manufacturing Company in Dayton. He was a World War II veteran serving in England and was retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Ernstes.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl (Blevins) Houston of Dayton; daughter, Helen Arnold of Dayton; three sons, Jack Houston of Park City, Utah, William Ray Houston of Dayton and Jonathan Houston stationed at Incirlik Air Base in Seuerial, Turkey; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A Masonic service was held 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at Coulter Garrison Funeral Home. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Jewell officiating. Interment followed the services in Pierce Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Opal Brooks Schupolsky
Died: 10/31/1998

Opal Brooks Schupolsky, of Knoxville, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Knoxville. She was 78.

Born in Rhea County May 7, 1920, she lived most of her life in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and most recently in Tennessee where she was a homemaker. Many years ago she worked at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and was a contestant in several beauty pageants as a young woman. She was of the Church of God Faith and was the daughter of Charlie Brooks and Sallie (Turner) Brooks.

Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Chapman and Madge Cross, both of Knoxville; two brothers, Lewis Brooks of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Lloyd Brooks of Soddy-Daisy; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Jewell Travis officiating. Interment followed the services in Garrison Cemetery. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Billy Lenoir Jones
Died: 11/14/1998

Rev. Billy Lenoir Jones, of Spring City, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was 67.

Born in Loudon County, Tenn., Mr. Jones was the son of the late James Harvey and Abbey Hughes Jones. He was a Korean Conflict veteran having served in the U.S. Army as a paramedic. He was a graduate of Clear Creek Theological Seminary in Pineville, Ky., and received a master’s degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in Rossville, Ga. He was pastor of Wolf Creek Baptist Church from 1978 to 1997 and was serving as interim pastor. He pastored various churches in East Tennessee from 1961 until coming to Spring City. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen, Clarence and Tom Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Moore Jones of Spring City; two sons, Timothy Keith Jones of Evensville and Jeffrey Dean Jones of Grandview; daughter, Deborah Ann Jones Kelly of Spring City; two brothers, Roy Jones of Sweetwater, Tenn., and Kenneth Jones of Rossville, Ga.; four sisters, Nell Blount and Blanche Randolph, both of Loudon, Tenn., Mary Blevins and Edith McCollister, both of Sweetwater, Tenn.; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Wolf Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Danny Ruehling, Rev. Omar Painter, Rev. Ira Frazier and Rev. Jeff Elliot officiating. Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, in Spring City Memorial Gardens. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of arrangements.

Teresa Lopez
Died: 11/13/1998

Teresa Lopez, of Spring City, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. She was 57.

Mrs. Lopez was a Spring City resident since 1990 after moving from Los Angeles, Calif., where she lived for many years. She was a graduate from high school in Mexico, and was the daughter of Jose Maria Sandoval and Maria Trinidad (Sanchez) Sandoval. She was a homemaker and a assistant teacher and interpreter for Migrant Head Start Program in Rhea County. While in Los Angeles, she worked as a machine operator for Gillette Co., Papermate Division. She became an American citizen last year.

She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Dayton. Mrs. Lopez was a former volunteer fireman for Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department. She was an accomplished cake decorator. She thoroughly enjoyed being the “lead” cheerleader for the Senior Games in Chattanooga and was also an avid fisherman.

Survivors include her husband, Charles A. Lopez of Spring City; three sons, Pedro Sandoval of New York, N.Y., Dean Lopez of Nevada and Charles Lopez Jr., of Hawaii; four sisters, Guadalupe Buck of Oceanside, Calif., Esperanza Rodriguez of Santa Maria, Calif., Elena Chavez of Long Beach, Calif., and Maria Paz Sandoval of Chattanooga; six brothers, Roberto Sandoval of Guadalajara, Mex., Jose Sandoval of Riverside, Calif., Carlos Sandoval of Guadalajara, Mex., Luis Sandoval of Santa Monica, Calif., Nicholas Sandoval of Guadalajara, Mex., and Alfonso Sandoval of Guadalajara, Mex.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Fr. John Milewski and Fr. Michael Roark officiating. A scripture service was held Monday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home. Interment was conducted in Spring City Memorial Gardens following the services. Memorial donations may be made to the Bethel Bible Village Children’s Home, 3001 Hamill Rd., Hixson, TN. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Lee Hall
Died: 12/11/1998

Bobby Lee “Bunchie” Hall, of Dayton, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 59.

Born in Rhea County Oct. 30, 1939, Mr. Hall was a lifelong resident. He was a retired commercial and residential painter and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his son, John G. Hall of Chicago, Ill.; three daughters, Cindy Manning of Port Orange, Fla., Dana Faler of Memphis, Tenn., and Tracy Yeargan of Dayton; brother, Donnie Hall of Dayton; two sisters, Betty Curtin of Soddy-Daisy and Debra Bevins of Sale Creek; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderall Funeral Home with Rev. Clankston Freeman and Rev. Kenneth Fugate officiating. Interment followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Frank B. McSpadden
Died: 12/11/1998

Frank B. McSpadden, of Dayton, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in a local nursing home. He was 74.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. McSpadden was a retired machinist from TVA, a veteran of World War II and a member of Masonic Lodge #512 F&AM. He was a deacon at New Union Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Cochran McSpadden; brothers, Tom McSpadden and Clarence McSpadden; sisters, Elizabeth McSpadden and Bess Hutcheson.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy McSpadden Dees of Cleveland, Tenn.; son, David McSpadden of Dayton; brothers, John McSpadden of Dunlap, Tenn.; Fred McSpadden of Sweetwater, Tenn., Bill McSpadden of Dayton, Ed McSpadden of Dayton, Jim McSpadden of Chattanooga; sisters, Helen McSpadden of Durham, N.C., and Margaret Cochran of Spring City.

Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at New Union Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Burns and Rev. Danny Ruehling officiating. Interment followed the services in Smith-Wilkey Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Horace Higgins
Died: 11/15/1998

Rev. Horace Higgins, of Spring City, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at his home. He was 84.

Born in Flag Pond, Tenn., Rev. Higgins came to the Rhea County area from Erwin, Tenn., and was the son of the late John Lovejoy and Rheuhamie Runyan Higgins. He worked as a car-man for the Clinchfield Railroad and had pastored churches since 1952. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was member of Rhea Springs Lodge #310, Rhea Springs Chapter #83, Drummond Council #865 and Plateau Commandary #38. He was a member of Wolf Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Hensley Higgins of Spring City; daughter, Delores Ray Radford of Hixson; two sons, James Douglas Higgins of Chattanooga and Roger D. Higgins of Flag Pond, Tenn.; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Denzel Brown and Rev. Jeff Elliott officiating. Masonic services followed the funeral services. Interment will be conducted in Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin, Tenn., Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Erwin Memorial Funeral Home in Erwin, Tenn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rhea Springs Lodge #310, Spring City. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.

Otto W. Everett
Died: 11/13/1998

Otto W. Everett, of Graysville, died at his home Friday, Nov. 13, 1998. He was 76.

Born Oct. 22, 1922, in Bledsoe County, Mr. Everett was the son of Robert W. and Annie (Hancock) Everett. He lived in Battle Creek, Mich., for 40 years until moving to Graysville in 1979. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in road construction in Michigan. Mr. Everett was a World War II veteran having served in the European Theatre. He was a member of the VFW in Athens, Mich., and American Legion Post #100 in Dayton. He attended Graysville United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by 16 brothers and sisters and one granddaughter. Otto was an avid fisherman and an avid coon, fox and rabbit hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia (Kline) Everett of Graysville; three sons, Mack Everett of Graysville, Cecil Everett of Colon, Mich., Philip Everett of Graysville; daughter, Beverly Everett of Graysville; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Norman and Rev. Jim Hillian officiating. Interment followed in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

John R. Boetker
Died: 11/13/1998

John R. Boetker Sr., of Spring City, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at Parkridge Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was 89.

Born in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Boetker moved to the Rhea County area six months ago from Culpepper, Va. He worked for the City of Takoma, Md., as street supervisor in the public works department. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was of the Lutheran Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie N. Boetker of Spring City; son, Roland Boetker of Clearville, Pa.; six daughters, Marie Nolde of Clarksburg, Md., Catherine Hansen of North Carolina, Mary Agnes Law of Spring City, Lorraine Byars of Spring City, Gloria Woods of Haywood, Va., and Patricia Payne of Spring City; brother, Chrissy Boetker of Odenton, Md.; 29 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, in the chapel of Clore-Geest Funeral Home in Culpepper, Va., and burial followed in Culpepper National Cemetery. Local arrangements were provided by Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City.
