Alfred A. Cagle
Died: 03/25/2001

Alfred A. Cagle, of Lorain, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his home following a long illness. He was 71.

Born Dec. 20, 1929, in Rhea County, Mr. Cagle lived in Elyria, Ohio for most of his life and worked as a loader at York International for 43 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Elyria Moose Club and Midway Baptist Church in Elyria.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Jerry Lynn and Kenneth Cagle; father, John Cagle; and sister, Wanda Cunningham.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Janis (Jones) Cagle of Lorain; sons, Sam and Kevin Cagle, both of Elyria, and David Cagle of Crossville, Tenn.; daughter, Theresa Lee of Crossville; step-son, Richard Griffith of Maryland; step-daughter, Kathy Browning of Lorain; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; mother, Artie (Jolley) Cagle of Spring City; brother, James Cagle of Spring City; sisters, Margie Cunningham and Wilma Jean Allen, both of Spring City; half-sisters, Jean Weaver of Huron, Ohio, and Debbie Vargo of Northfield, Ohio.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Midway Baptist Church in Elyria with Rev. Charles Keesee officiating. Burial followed in Brookdale Cemetery in Elria. Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home in Elyria was in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur Thomas Gillespie
Died: 03/17/2001

Arthur Thomas Gillespie, of Spring City, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at his residence. He was 77.

Mr. Gillespie was a member of Euchee Chapel AME Zion Church where he served as a trustee and deacon. A retired employee of Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston Steam Plant, Mr. Gillespie served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 294th Port Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lucille Gillespie.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Beulah E. Smith Gillespie of Spring City; daughters, Rosemary (Norman) Chester of Streetsboro, Ohio, Pamela Slater of Columbus, Ohio, and Bonita G. McCowan of Spring City; two grandsons; three granddaughters, one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at Euchee Chapel AME Zion Church with Revs. L.B. Tate and Dr. J.D. Howell officiating. Burial followed in Euchee-Gillespie Cemetery in Spring City.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Euchee Chapel AME Zion Church, 473 Gillespie Rd., Spring City, TN 37381. M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home in Athens was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian P. Brown
Died: 03/22/2001

Lillian P. Brown, of Dayton, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at her daughter’s home. She was 89.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mrs. Brown was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, P.B. Woodward and McClure Brown; son, Stanley Woodward; parents, John and Margaret Jordan Phillips; sister, Dora Phillips; brother, Charlie Phillips; half-sister, Alice P. Simmons and Lou Whittaker; and half-brothers, Andy, Lon and Walter Phillips and Robert Byrd.

Survivors include her daughter, Sue Luce of Dayton; granddaughters, Gail Shipley of Sale Creek, and Heather Woody of Dayton; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Steven Shipley and David Woody; special grandson, Doug Shipley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private memorial service was conducted in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton with Brother Henry Noland officiating. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Alma Yother Carney
Died: 03/23/2001

Alma Yother Carney, of Dayton, died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Chandler, Ind. She was 86.

Born July 26, 1914, Mrs. Carney lived in Dayton for most of her life where she was a homemaker and a member of Vine Grove Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Long Carney; and parents, Benjamin and Lena (Good) Yother.

Survivors include her son, George F. Carney Sr. of Radcliff, Ky.; sister, Mary Ruth Cox of Georgia; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton. Burial followed next to her husband in Dayton City Cemetery. Vanderwall Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Billy W. Marler
Died: 03/23/2001

Billy W. Marler, of Graysville, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. He was 75.

A retired boiler maker with Tennessee Valley Authority, Mr. Marler was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Graysville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Roddy Marler of Graysville; mother, Cora Marler of Graysville; daughters and son-in-law, Billie Ruth and Mike Queen of Hixson, and Teresa Marler of Graysville; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Deb Sue Marler of Graysville; sister, Sue Bean of Manchester, Tenn..; grandchildren, Kimberly Caraway of Graysville, Chris Smith of Chattanooga, Jenna Queen of Epworth, Ga., and Bradley Skiles of Graysville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Glen Moseley officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael (Mike) John Harris
Died: 03/26/2001

Michael (Mike) John Harris, of Chicago, Ill., died Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home. He was 42.

A former employee of La-Z-Boy Tennessee in Dayton for 15 years, Mr. Harris was a member of New Union Baptist Church of Dayton.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Harris.

Survivors include his sons, Anthony and Andrew Harris of Dayton; mother, Betty Parker of Alloway, Tenn.; sisters, Lois Lenard of Crossville, Tenn., and Sue Loyd of Rochelle, Ill.; brother, Ron Harris of Rochelle; and step-brother, Robert Parker of Crossville.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Bilbrey Funeral Home in Crossville with Dr. Danny Ruehling and Bro. Howard Scroggins officiating. Burial followed in Harris Cemetery in Alloway, Tenn. Bilbrey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Scottie C. Sneed
Died: 04/01/2001

Scottie C. Sneed, of Dayton, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at his home. He was 40.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Sneed was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. A former investigator and DARE officer for the Rhea County Sheriff’s Department for 12 years, Mr. Sneed was formerly employed by Robinson Manufacturing Company, self-employed by Bowater and a farmer for several years.

A member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the National Sheriff’’s Association, Mr. Sneed had an AS degree in forestry and was one month short of a degree in criminal justice.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Carroll Sneed.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Hays Sneed of Dayton; son, Daniel Carroll Sneed of Dayton; parents, R.C. and Clara Sneed of Dayton; sister, Brenda Sneed Brooks of Dayton; brothers, Chris and Tony Sneed, both of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Mullins officiating. Rhea County Sheriff’s Department officers will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow in Sneed Family Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Violet Worthington
Died: 04/03/2001

Ruby Violet Worthington, of Dayton, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Sunbridge of Decatur. She was 89.

A homemaker, Mrs. Worthington was a member of Old Washington Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Worthington; parents, Samuel Burt and Harriet Kennedy Roddy; brothers, Russell and J.B. Roddy; and sisters, Hazel Sharp, Gertie Collins and Bea Masengale.

Survivors include her sister, Mildred Powers of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at Old Washington Baptist Church with Rev. Felix Harris officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of the arrangements.
