James Clarence Neal
Died: 11/12/1998
James Clarence Neal, of Dayton, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at Rhea Medical Center. He was 86.
A lifelong resident of Rhea County, Mr. Neal was the son of the late Fred and Adeline McDaniels Neal.
He retired in 1977 from Tennessee Valley Authority as a carpenter. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Rhea Springs Lodge #310 F&AM, American Legion Post 100. Mr. Neal was also a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Dayton where he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Malcolm Neal.
Survivors include his wife, Mettie Reed Neal of Dayton; daughter, Beatrice Harvill of Harrison, Tenn.; son, Elbert Roy Neal of Dayton; three brothers, John Neal and Roy Neal, both of Gruetli, Tenn., and Mike Neal of Hixson, Tenn.; sister, Fannie Swafford of Florida; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Fugate and Rev. Wilburn Hardyman officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the services in Spring City Memorial Gardens. Vaughn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Hilda Crow Fleishel
Died: 11/11/1998
Hilda Crow Fleishel, of Shreveport, La., died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at the Guest Care Center where she was a resident for 11 years. She was 86.
Prior to moving to Shreveport, Mrs. Fleishel lived in Rhea County for 48 years. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Spring City, a charter member and secretary of the Spring City Women’s Club and a past president of the Spring City PTA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frederick Fleishel Jr., and her parents, John William and Mary Pickel Crow.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Charles F. Fleishel III and Helen Claiborne Fleishel of Shreveport, La.; grandsons, Charles and Allen Fleishel of Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Spring City Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. until time of the service in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, W. Jackson Ave., Spring City, TN 37381. Local arrangements are provided by Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City.
George John Schurter
Died: 11/07/1998
George John Schurter, of Nashville, formerly of Dayton, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998. He was 86.
Mr. Schurter was retired from La-Z-Boy Chair Co. He was a former member of Grace Bible Church and was currently a member at First Baptist Church in Donelson, Tenn. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Detroit, Mich., where he was former commander of Fairview Post #393 and also served as Quarter Master. Mr. Schurter also held various positions with The Gideons International in both Tennessee and Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth F. Schurter.

Mary Moore Geer
Died: 10/21/1998
Mary Elizabeth Moore Geer, of Atlanta, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Dayton to the late Ernest W. Moore and Nancy Kessler Moore, she attended local schools and graduated from Bryan College.
Survivors include her sister, Frances Jackson of Chattanooga; husband, Earl Geer of Atlanta; two sons, Dan Geer of Massachusetts and Michael Geer of Colorado and two granddaughters.
Funeral services were held Oct. 23, with Rev. Albert Levengood officiating. Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Wiggins
Died: 11/02/1998
Frank Wiggins, of Frankfort, Ky., a native of Spring City, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at his home after an extended illness.
Mr. Wiggins was a native of Spring City and worked as a manager with the American Utilities Corporation in Lawrenceburg. He was the son of the late Condon and Sallee Mae (Robbins) Wiggins and was preceded in death by his brother, Berlin Wiggins and his sister, Betty Holloway. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Wiggins of Frankfort, Ky.; son, Artie Culbertson of Frankfort, Ky.; five daughters, Brenda Hayes, Shelia Bryant, Tina Harlow, Sharon Wooldridge, all of Frankfort, Ky., and Debbie Odom of Sun Valley, Nev.; four brothers, Arthur Wiggins of Mason, Ohio, Charles Wiggins of Rossville, Ga., Tommy Wiggins of Mason, Ohio, and Jimmy Wiggins of Indiana; two sisters, Katie Claunch of Ferguson, Ky., and Opal Couch of McDonald, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in the chapel of LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home in Frankfort, Ky. His brother, Tony D. Stinnett officiated the services.
Pallbearers included Ellis Shouse, Kenny Smith, Stan Lantz, Arlon Perkins, Jerry Parton and Wesley Peyton. Honorary pallbearers included Jake Hayes, Kenny Harlow, and Mr. Wiggins’ grandchildren, Richie Cheatham, Abby Cheatham, Leon Harlow Jr., Frankie Harlow, Johnathan Wooldridge, Ann Culbertson, Wesley Culbertson, Gary Culbertson and Justin Fischer.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass. LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home in Frankfort, Ky., was in charge of arrangements.
Conley Franklin Miller

Conley “Con” Franklin Miller, of Dayton, died at his home Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998. He was 86.
Born in Evensville July 26, 1912, Mr. Miller was a Rhea County resident all his life. He was retired from Kayser-Roth where he worked for many years. He was an active member of the Rhea County Republican Party and a member of the First Baptist Church in Dayton. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Thurman Miller of Dayton; daughter, Adena Miller Williamson of Marietta, Ga.; grandson, Joseph Chatt Williamson of Marietta, Ga.; brother, Eugene Bill Miller of Clearwater, Fla.; one niece and several nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Minister Steve Brown and Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment followed the services in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
Sidney Marler

Sidney Marler, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. He was 69.
Mr. Marler was a retired switchman with South Central Bell and a member of Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of the Appalachian Trail Conference.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Marler of Red Bank; son, Van Marler of Evensville; two daughters, Vickie Ellen Marler of Atlanta, Ga., and Vivian Richie of Chattanooga; sister, JoAnn Beene of Evensville; brother, Cosby Marler of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Hooper Harrison Hyder
Died: 11/27/1998
Hooper Harrison Hyder, of Sale Creek, died Nov. 27, 1998, in a local nursing home. He was 80.
Mr. Hyder was a business owner for over 50 years before retiring and also worked as a Hamilton County Schools bus driver for many years. He was a decorated veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Pendergrass Hyder of Sale Creek; two daughters, Stephanie A. (Hyder) Blockley of Sale Creek, Tammy L. Smith of Dayton; son, Christopher Harrison Hyder of Sale Creek; two brothers, Leo Hyder of Sale Creek and Paul Hyder of Florida; two sisters, Willie Swallows and Cleo Pendergrass, both of Sale Creek; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Nunley officiating. Burial followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
Otis Dean Smith
Died: 11/21/1998
Otis Dean Smith, of Detroit, Mich., died there recently at his home. He was 55.
Mr. Smith was the son of the late Clyde O. and Jeraldine Ruffner Smith. He was a member of Spring City High School class of 1963 and was manager for the Town of Spring City in 1980. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Tennessee and Chrysler Corp. in Michigan. He also served four years in the U.S. Navy. He grew up at the home of Otis and Belle Williams on New Lake Road in Spring City.
Survivors include a daughter, Amy M. Smith of Detroit, Mich.; two sons, Lynn M. Smith of Detroit, Mich., and Dean A. Smith of Virginia; brother, Gary P. Smith; and one grandson.

Arlan Lloyd Smith
Died: 12/10/1998
Arlan Lloyd Smith, of Dayton, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Northpark Hospital in Chattanooga. He was 63.
Mr. Smith was born June 26, 1935, in Ringgold, Ga., and was the son of Neely and Ollie (Harvey) Smith. He was a Dayton resident most of his life and was retired from W.R. Grace Chemical Co. in South Pittsburgh, Tenn. He was a member of the Friendship Full Gospel Church. He loved to draw animals and weenie dogs.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Vivan Smith of Dayton; daughter, Linda Stinnett of Dayton; son, Dwight Smith of Spring City; sister, Sue Hoback of Texas; three grandchildren and a special great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. James Sandell and Rev. Audie May officiating. Interment will follow the services in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. The family will receive visitors all day Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the funeral home. Vanderwall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Irene E. Trew
Died: 11/30/1998
Irene E. “Jean” Trew, of Spring City, died at her home Monday, Nov. 30, 1998. She was 75.
A lifelong resident of Spring City, Mrs. Trew was the daughter of the late Estill and Alice Gilliam Elrod. A homemaker, she worked with Rhea Rural Fair Association, held several offices in the Rhea County Crewettes and taught cake decorating classes. She was a graduate of Spring City High School and a member of the Spring City United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by a brother, J.A. Elrod, and a sister, Bernice Ezell.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Trew of Spring City; two daughters, Ardoth Martin and Judith Barger, both of Spring City; brother, Herbert Elrod of Boise, Idaho; sister, Ina Ford of Spring City; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Don Allison officiating. Burial will be in Spring City Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, from 2 until 3:30 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City is in charge of arrangements.
