Claude Reed
Died: 12/26/1998

Claude Reed, of Grandview, died at his home Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998. He was 75.

Mr. Reed was a lifelong resident of Grandview and was of the Baptist Faith. He was the son of the late Mark Taylor and Bessie Reed, and was preceded in death by his sister, Clara Cunningham, and grandson, Kelvin Reed.

Survivors include his wife, Lora R. Reed of Grandview; daughter, Rachel Honoshofsky of Grafton, Ohio; son, Charles D. Reed of Tennessee; two sisters, Vadie Garrison and Ruth Brady, both of Grandview; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Durham officiating. Interment followed in Johnson Stand Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.

Luther Jackson Bishop
Died: 12/30/1998

Luther “Luke” Jackson Bishop, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga. He was 78.

Born April 28, 1920, in Rhea County, Mr. Bishop was a lifelong resident and local businessman, operating Luke’s Body Shop in Morgantown for 50 years until his retirement. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy in the North Atlantic. He was a member of American Legion Post 100 and attended Cove Chapel Church of God. He was the son of Dave Finley Bishop and Gladys Amanda “Brady” Bishop.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, five brothers, Austin Bishop, Edmond Bishop, Finley Bishop, Richard Bishop (infant), and Anthony Lee Bishop (infant), and a sister, Montie Mickel.

Survivors include his wife, Virgie Lee Bishop of Dayton; son, Rick Bishop of Dayton; daughters, Sandra Rogers and Michelle Bishop, both of Dayton; brothers, Brady Bishop, Bernard Bishop, C.H. Bishop and Felix Bishop, all of Dayton; sister, Anna Mae Kelley of Dayton; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Interment followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Barger Gothard
Died: 12/28/1998

Ruby Marie Barger Gothard, of Kingsport, Tenn., died at her home Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, following a lengthy illness. She was 91.

Born June 18, 1907, in Graysville, she moved to Kingsport in 1941. She was a charter member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church and was retired from the Kingsport City School System.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Roland and Minerva Harris Barger; step-mother, Mattie Marler Barger; husband, Harry M. Gothard; daughters, Jimmie Land and Minerva Sexton; grandsons, Barry and Larry Hobbs; sisters, Jewell Beene, Pearl Alexander, Joy Hicks; brothers, Pat, Posey, Paul, Perry, Cyrus and W.T. Barger.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Shirley Gothard, Charles “Buddy” and Ramona Gothard, all of Kingsport, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Martha Lynn and Hoyt Howard of Flintstone, Ga.; brothers, Jim Barger of Pensacola, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at East Lawn Funeral Home in Kingsport, Tenn. Interment followed the services in East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Daniel Gothard, Joel Gothard, Mike Howard, Bill Hopkins, Dan Stacey, Jeremy Stacey, Dennis Thurman, Joel Jones, Jeff Richardson, Kurt Stevenson, Brian Cavin and Kenneth Warner. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, Colonial Heights Road, Kingsport, TN 37663. East Lawn Funeral Home in Kingsport, Tenn., was in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Horne
Died: 12/30/1998

Robert E. Horne Jr., of Kingston, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was 63.

Survivors include his wife, of 44 years, Margie Horne of Kingston, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and William Scheib of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Cynthia and John Mark Stroud of Wayneville, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Karen Horne of Ft. Worth, Texas; sister, Marilyn Horne of Indiana; brothers, John Horne of Illinois and Bruce Horne of Indiana; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Kyker Funeral Home in Kingston, Tenn. The family wishes to express appreciation for the love and support received during Robert’s illness and especially to the square dance community in Rhea County. Kyker Funeral Home in Kingston, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Montgomery Dennison
Died: 12/30/1998

Edna (Ted) Montgomery Dennison, of Tiftonia, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in a local nursing home. She was of the Church of God Faith. She was 77.

Survivors include three sons, Paul Dean Carr of Wildwood, Ga., Tommy Lee Montgomery and Eddie Ray Montgomery, both of Dayton; three sisters, Irene Lawson of Knoxville, Neva Phillips of Ohio and Nell Crabtree of Indiana; brother, Ebb Acres of Kentucky; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Wilkey officiating. Interment followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Pearl Lewis
Died: 12/19/1998

Carrie Pearl (Wilkey) Lewis, of Dayton, died in a local hospital Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998. She was 91.

She was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and a member of the Foursquare Gospel Church of Dayton. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Emmitt Lewis; sister, Altia Bell Dunn; and brothers, James Wilkey and Claud Wilkey.

Survivors include her daughter, Eleatha (Lewis) Kennedy of Austin, Ark.; son, James (Buddy) Lewis of Dayton; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Foursquare Gospel Church of Dayton with Rev. Bart Slikker and Rev. Mike Breeden officiating. Interment followed the services in Buttram Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Truman Hyder
Died: 12/18/1998

Paul Truman Hyder Sr., of Gibsonton, Fla., formerly of Graysville, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Gibsonton, Fla. He was 73.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Doyle and Hooper H. Hyder.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Hyder of Gilisanton, Fla., Johnny Hyder of Battle Creek, Mich., and Juddy Hyder of Battle Creek, Mich.; two daughters, Kim Hyder of Battle Creek, Mich., and Pam Cline of Nashville; brother, Leo Hyder of Sale Creek; two sisters, Willia Swallous and Cleo Pendergrass, both of Sale Creek; several grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Emory Layne officiating. Interment followed the services in Welch Rogers Cemetery in Sale Creek. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Rose R. Hallett
Died: 12/20/1998

Rose R. Hallett, of Grandview, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn. She was 88.

A resident of Grandview, she was formerly of Auburn Hill, Mich. She was a 20-year member of the First General Baptist Church in Auburn Hill, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hallett and was the daughter of the late William Oliver and Martha Rachael Collins Harris.

Survivors include her daughter, Jimi Sanchez of Tacoma, Wash.; sister, Julia Reed of Grandview; brother, Dudley Harris of Spring City; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. John Powers and Rev. Doyle Bowen officiating. Interment followed the services in Harris Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Irene Capps
Died: 12/21/1998

Mary Irene Capps, of Milton, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. She was 83.

Born March 14, 1915, in Sewanne, Tenn., Mrs. Capps was the daughter of Luther Garner and Florence Kirk Farner. She previously lived in East Ridge, Tenn., then Milton, Fla., for the past 15 years.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn Capps of Milton, Fla.; five sons, Paul P. Link of South Carolina, James E. Link of Miner Hill, Tenn., Lee R. Link and Robert R. Link, both of Milton, Fla., and Larry Link of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Flora Mae Mason of Smyrna, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, in Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Chattanooga with Rev. Barry Purser officiating. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Lucille Bell
Died: 11/18/1998

Hazel Lucille Bell, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, in a local hospital. She was 71.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Bell of Pikeville, Tenn., and daughter, Lois Brewer of Winchester, Tenn.

Survivors include three sisters, Syble Purdy of Winchester, Tenn., Mary Elizabeth Champion of Scottsboro, Ala., and Bernice Whitfield of Dayton; three brothers, W.D. Stubblefield of Sherwood, Tenn., Charles Stubblefield of Winchester, Tenn., Tommy Byrd of Scottsboro, Ala.; five children, Donna McCuiston of Dayton, David Hamilton of Chattanooga, Tenn., Ronnie Hamilton of Chattanooga, Rhonda Roberts of Spring City, Michael Bell of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Breeden officiating. Interment will follow the services at Winnie Cemetery in Bledsoe County. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Nola Mickel Daniel
Died: 11/23/1998

Nola Mickel Daniel, of Dayton, died at her home Monday, Nov. 23, 1998.

She was a lifelong Dayton resident and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Jess Mickel and Newell C. “Pete” Daniel; daughter, Maxine Mickel; three sons, Jess Mickel Jr., Melvin Mickel and Johnny Mickel; and sister, Lona Cunningham.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Yearwood, Naomi Tipton and Rosalee Hawkins, all of Dayton; sister, Dixie Jones of Baltimore, Md.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald and Rev. Jim Hillian officiating. Interment will follow the services in Buttram Cemetery in Dayton. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.
