Rev. Vance T. Jones, 72, of Hampton, Va., died there Saturday, February 20, 1999, following an extended illness. Rev. Jones was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a son of the late Clyde and Jane Jones. Rev. Jones had lived in Virginia since 1952. He formerly had been employed by the Newport News Ship Yard and also had been a Baptist Minister for a number of years, serving in several churches in the Hampton, Virginia area. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Charlcie Hardin Jones; four sons, Norman and Kenneth Jones, both of the home, Bobby and Terry Jones, both of Hampton, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Shook, Banner Elk, N.C., Mrs. Myrtle Gobble and Mrs. Faye Bradshaw, both of Hampton, Tenn.; a brother, Ford Jones, Elk Park, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Roxeann Jones. Dorothy Estep Morley, 84, 210 Allen Avenue, Elizabethton, died Friday, February 19, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Ms. Morley was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Crit T. and Eliza Ellis Estep. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde W. Morley, November 15, 1996; four sisters, Gladys Morrell, Nell Greenlee, Kathyleen Roberts and Tulva Estep; and two brothers, Robert Leslie Estep and Glenn Jobe Estep. Ms. Morley was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church, where she was active in the circles of the church. She was also a member of the Sycamore Chapter No. 163 Order of the Eastern Star and the Elizabethton Women's Club. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Keith Sr. and Becky Morley, Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Keith Morley II, Kingsport, Rachel Morley, Murfreesboro, and Michelle Morley, Knoxville; a great-granddaughter, Lexis Kay Morley, Kingsport; a great-grandson, Keith Morley III, Kingsport; a sister, Maggie Howard, Elizabethton; a brother, Tipton Estep, Cocoa, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Simerly and Margaret Morley Dye, both of Elizabethton; and two brothers-in-law, Strauss Morley, Johnson City, and Kay Morley, Jonesborough. Allen Grant Pierce, 87, Largo Vista Blvd., Casselberry, Fla., died Wednesday, February 10, 1999. Mr. Pierce was a retired owner and operator of Orlando Sewing Center. Born in Tennessee, he moved to Central Florida in 1946. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Winter Park and was a member of Christian Business Men's Committee International. Survivors include his wife, Gustava Pierce; a son, Frank Pierce, Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Ann Gilliam, Wheaton, Ill.; and three brothers, Roy Pierce, Dayton Pierce and Ted Pierce, all of Johnson City, Tenn. Mr. Smith was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Art and Callie Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Clara Tolbert Smith; three daughters, Marie Miller, Mary Ann Cullers and Betty Lou Morton; and several brothers and sisters. Mr. Smith was a member of Pearce's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. Survivors include four daughters and a son-in-law, Mable Hitechew, Roan Mountain, Pauline Ramsey and Nancy and Donald Roberts, all of Hampton, and Sandra Range, Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bart Jr. and Sue Smith, Butler, and Steve Smith, Hampton; and a special friend, Maxine Whaley, Butler. Mr. Tolley was a native of Carter County but had lived his entire life in Unicoi County. Mr. Tolley was self-employed in landscaping. He was a member of the Buffalo Valley Free Will Baptist. He was a coach for Jerry's Market Little League Baseball Team. Survivors include his wife, Mellissa Cantrell Tolley, of the home; a son, Holden Blake Tolley, Unicoi; three daughters, Chandera Shea Tolley and Cassidy Leigh Tolley, both of Unicoi, and Chelsea Lenee Adkins, Erwin; his father, Mike Hunter, Erwin; his mother and step-father, Phyllis Tolley and John Yarber, Unicoi; two sisters, Stacy Michelle Yarber and Lutoria Christine Tolley, both of Unicoi; his maternal grandparents, Blake and Elsie Tolley, Unicoi; and his step-grandparents, Harry and Inis Yarber, Unicoi. Mrs. Belle Troutman, 94, of National Health Care Nursing Home, Johnson City, died Saturday, February 20, 1999. Mrs. Troutman was a native of Unicoi County and the daughter of the late Henry and Emma Baker Laws. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Laws and Allison Laws. Mrs. Troutman had previously been employed by the Unicoi County Post Office, had been employed as a clerical worker at the Unicoi County Courthouse and was a former writer for the Erwin Record. She was a member of the Buffalo Valley Christian Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Elnora and Robert Whitson, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Charlie E. Whitehead, 84, Rt. 2, Dennis Cove Road, Hampton, died Friday, February 19, 1999, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following a short illness. Mr. Whitehead was a native of Hampton and a son of the late Cleve and Annie Holly Whitehead. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Martine Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead returned to Carter County following his military career. He was a retired Sergeant with the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, with more than 20 years of service. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. Survivors include three brothers, Dave Whitehead, San Diego, Calif., Joe Whitehead, Roan Mountain, and Martin Whitehead, Whitesburg, Ga., and five sisters, Orpha Norris, Watauga, Hazel Oliver and Mary Hollaway, both of Elizabethton, Ethel Childers, Hampton, and Geneva Smalling, Watauga. Diggs; his mother, Maude Andrews Cummins; his stepfather, Wilfred "Hop" Cummins; an uncle, Paul H. Diggs; an aunt, Anna Lorraine Thompson; and his grandparents, Amanda Lou Cable Boyd and Joseph Cable, and Elizabeth and Wheeler Andrews. Survivors include his wife, Rubie D. McKenney Diggs; his children, Lloyd S. Diggs III, Woodbridge, Va., Christina M. Diggs and Wesley R. Tommy Louis Luttrell, 55, 1250 Woodcrest Drive, Daytona Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, January 20, 1999, at his residence of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Luttrell was a native of Bristol, Va., and a son of the late Pearly L. and Dixie Smithson Luttrell. He was also preceded in death by two brothers. Mr. Luttrell had lived in Daytona Beach since 1982. He was a graduate of Tennessee High School and East Tennessee State University. He was employed by the National Distributing Company of Daytona Beach and was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Bill Crow, Elizabethton. Jimmy Dwayne "Chick" Humphrey, 38, 235 H. Heaton Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, February 15, 1999, at his residence. Mr. Humphrey was a native of Carter County and had lived in this area all of his life. He was a son of Lena Baird Humphrey, Watauga, and the late James Edward Humphrey. He was also preceded in death by a sister. Mr. Humphrey had worked in construction with Davis Electrical and more recently was employed by Alcoa. He had served as a fireman with the Watauga Fire Department where he also was Chief for two years. He was a member of Watauga Christian Church and also attended Fellowship Community Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Angela Church Humphrey; two sons, Andrew Charles Humphrey, of the home, and Israel James Colby Humphrey, Jonesborough; two daughters, Megan Rachelle Humphrey, of the home, and Felicia Renee Humphrey, Carter County; two brothers, Stephen Humphrey, Jackson, Ohio, and Tracy Humphrey, Watauga; and a sister, Delisa LaFleur, Elizabethton. Mack C. Tolley, 71, 214 Simerly Creek Road, Hampton, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Tolley was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Charlie M. and Lockie Hilmon Tolley. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Julius Tolley. Mr. Tolley was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He attended the Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include six sisters and three brothers-in-law, Geneva and Howard Roberts, Leafie Payne and Sherlene Davis, all of Hampton, Mahala and M.B. Hampton, Melvery, Ga., Alpha and Bill Tipton, Roan Mountain, and Darlie Hyder, Johnson City; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Jack and Sammie Tolley, Herman and Shonette Tolley and Wade Tolley, all of Hampton; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins; a special cousin, Thelma Hite, Elizabethton; and his special friends, Patricia Collins and Jack and Arnold Street. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
TOLLEY -- Funeral services for Mack C. Tolley, 71, 214 Simerly Creek Road, Hampton, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charles Houston Higgins, 66, Hillview Nursing Home, formerly of 671 Shell Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Monday, February 15, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Higgins was a native of Unicoi County and had lived in Carter County most of his life. He was the son of Edith Mattingly Higgins, Erwin, and the late Charlie Higgins. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger Higgins. Mr. Higgins was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. He was retired from TVA as a carpenter and also worked as an auto mechanic. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Arlys Shell Higgins, Roan Mountain; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Connie and Albert Harrald, Elizabethton, Kathie and John Marshall, Johnson City, Donna Roberson, Albemarle, N.C., and Janet and Jim Adams, Rockwell, N.C.; twin sons and two daughters-in-law, Darrell and Irma Higgins and Douglas and Stephanie Higgins, all of Lenoir, N.C.; three brothers, Doyle Higgins, Erwin, Carroll Higgins, Jonesborough, and Richard Higgins, Austin, Texas; and five sisters, Lucille Price, Ada Sanders and Judy Sparks, all of Erwin, Saundra Starnes and Linda Waddle, both of Jonesborough. Virginia Turbyfill McKinney, 72, 113 McKinney Lane, Roan Mountain, died Monday, February 15, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. McKinney was a native of Avery County, N.C., and the daughter of the late Dave and Daisy Moody Turbyfill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dulaney McKinney, in 1981, and by three sisters and a brother. Mrs. McKinney was a homemaker and a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church, where she taught the Married Ladies Class. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Roselyn and Tom Ashley, Roan Mountain; a granddaughter, Tonya Ashley, Roan Mountain; and a grandson, Michael Ashley, Roan Mountain. Nidiffer, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Robert Stills Sr., Hampton; two granddaughters, Michelle Nelson and Julie Nelson, both of Hampton; a great-grandson, Dylan Nelson, Hampton; two brothers, C.E. Edith Lovelace Scott, 609 North Main Street, Elizabethton, died Monday, February 15, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Scott was a Virginia native, whose immediate family moved to Elizabethton soon after the turn of the century. Except for a brief period when she resided in Nashville, she was a lifelong resident of Elizabethton. Mrs. Scott had been a volunteer employee of the Emergency Relief, as well as having served and assisted in most all facets of the First Baptist Church. She was a member of the John Carter Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution, a member of the National Society of Southern Dames and a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. As long as she was physically able, she was an active member of the Johnson City Country Club. Mrs. Scott was the daughter of Mr. William and Mrs. Nora Lovelace. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, her sister, Grace, and her two brothers, Roy and Ray. Survivors include several cousins. Mrs. Velma A. Estep Fortner, 79, Hermitage Health Center, formerly of 202 West Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, died Sunday, February 14, 1999, at the Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Fortner was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Bruce and Eliza Carden Estep. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dan Fortner, March 6, 1987, two brothers and a sister. Mrs. Fortner was a member of the First Church of God. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Ken (Hazel) Rader, Mrs. Robert (Georgia) Moore and Mrs. Dennie (Ruby) Ensor, all of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Conrad (Charlotte) Ward, Morristown; a son and daughter-in-law, George and Lucy Fortner, Elizabethton; a sister and brother-in-law, Iva Lee and Vester Grindstaff, Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Patsy Estep, Elizabethton; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Conley (Hattie) Estep of Florida. Ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Iva M. Hinkle, 83, of Life Care Center, formerly of 211 Daytona Place, Elizabethton, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in Life Care Center following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hinkle was a lifelong resident of Carter County and a daughter of the late Sabin Lafayette and Julia Berry Mottern. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Hinkle, Jr. in 1970. Mrs. Hinkle was a homemaker. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons: John W. Hinkle, III, Atlanta, Ga.; and Barry P. Hinkle, Elizabethton; two granddaughters, Shannon Hinkle Woodby, Jonesborough; and Beth Hiles, Elizabethton; three great-great grandchildren: Mikalena Jade Woodby, Jonesborough; Hannah Alexis Hiles, Elizabethton; and Johnny Ray "Gunner" Woodby, III, Jonesborough. Virginia Lee Vance Holtsclaw, 68, 3706 Lake Victoria Drive, North Las Vegas, Nev., died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Odyssey Health Care, Inc., in Las Vegas. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of Bessie Vance, Roan Mountain, and the late William Henry Vance. Mrs. Holtsclaw resided in Shreveport, La., most of her life. She was a teacher of Sunday school classes and women's devotional classes. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include two daughters and sons-in-law: Sherry Elaine Holtsclaw and J.D. Lowe, Shreveport, La.; and Jill Holtsclaw and Tom Hesterman, Las Vegas, Nev.; two granddaughters: Christy Laine Lowe, Shreveport, La.; and Hailey Lynn Hesterman, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters: Elwanda Nave, Elizabethton; and Yvonne Birchfield, Roseville, Calif.; four brothers: Bob by Vance, Baltimore, Md.; Jimmy Vance, Citrus Heights, Calif.; Kelly Vance, Roan Mountain; and Roger Vance, Kingsport. Mrs. McKinney was a native of Johnson County and had lived in Carter County since 1941. She was a daughter of the late Milton and Pearl Loveless Snyder. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Dale Snyder and Jake Snyder. Mrs. McKinney was a retired supervisor of North American Rayon Corp. with 52 years of service. She was a member of the Auxiliary of Capt. Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband, Ralph McKinney, of the home; one son, Malcolm L. McKinney, Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Jim Snyder, Kennewick, Wash.; four sisters: Mary Hamilton, Johnson City; Sue Rowe, Delaware; Nancy Eliston and Debbie Buchterkirchen, both of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren: Rick McKinney, Elizabethton; and Tessa Kirk, Chattanooga; and one great-granddaughter, Madison McKinney, Elizabethton. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Overton and Elizabeth Pierce Peeks. Mr. Peeks was preceded in death by one brother. He was a member of East River Park Christian Church and a former employee of Fawn Grove Manufacturing Co. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Victoria and Robert Anderson, Highland, Calif.; two uncles: Claude Peeks, Rogersville; Tommy Peeks, Elizabethton; three aunts: Maude Simerly and Ollie Wilson, both of Elizabethton; and Martha Pearl Walsh, Ariz.; one nephew, Trey Anderson, Highland, Calif.
