Mrs. Dora Ezella Williams Whitaker

Mrs. Dora Ezella Williams Whitaker, age 90, died Monday, October 18, 1999. Mrs. Whitaker was a resident of Petersburg, married to the late J.D. Whitaker who died in 1986 and was the daughter of the late Mary Ellen and Bob Williams. She was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Petersburg. Funeral services were held Friday, October 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Eastside Church of Christ in Petersburg with Brother Roy Holman officiating. Interment was in Mulberry Cemetery in Mulberry. Grandsons served as pallbearers. She is survived by three children, Mary Evelyn Love of Lewisburg; William Claude Whitaker of Detroit, Michigan; and Bobby Whitaker of Southfield, Michigan; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Howard Funeral Home of Fayetteville was in charge of arrangements.

Don Rayburn Brown

Don Rayburn Brown, age 57, owner of Don Brown Trucking Company and driver for Mercer Transportation, died Saturday, November 6, at his residence on Highway 99 in Lewisburg. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Brother Bobby Sampson officiating. Burial followed in the Jones Cemetery. The family visited with friends Sunday and Monday from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of the late Buford W. and Mildred Norman Brown. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Matlock Brown of Lewisburg; three daughters, Mrs. Daphanne Tankersley of New Albany, Indiana; Mrs. Lori Barcheers and Mrs. Tabatha Lamb, both of Lewisburg; a step-son, Ricky Brown of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Sylvia Ring of Chapel Hill; a brother, Ralph E. Brown of Lewisburg; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Douglas Cooper, III, Richie Pruitt, Tracy Tankersley, Chris Tankersley, Billy Edwards, Terry Dodson. Honorary pallbearers include truck drivers and employees of Mercer Transportation.

William Boyd Conner

William Boyd Conner, age 77, died Sunday morning at his home on Lambert Street, Lewisburg. Mr. Conner was a native of Hickman County. The son of Elton and Bessie Cates Conner and a retired farmer. He is survived by his wife, Ozenia Head Conner of Ashland City; four daughters, Judy Faulkner of Columbia; Ann Spicer of Millersville; Sandra Brewer of Joelton; and Carolyn Morris of Nashville; five sons, Bill Conner of Nashville; Joe Conner of Franklin; Paul Conner of Ashland City; Jerry Conner of Charlotte; Johnny Conner of Nashville; and Andrew Conner of Pleasant View; one brother, George Conner of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Gladys Thompson of Columbia; and Georgia Moore of Mt. Pleasant; 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Graveside services and burial were conducted Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. in Ring Cemetery in Pottsville. Mark Horton officiated the service. The family was at the funeral home for visitation on Monday after 3:00 p.m. Pallbearers were Raymond Conner, Raymond Conner, Jr., Dick Conner, George Conner, Jr., Willie Brown and David Harwell. London Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Janie Mae Darnell

Miss Janie Mae Darnell, age 89, of Shelbyville died Thursday at Bedford County Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was a native of Bedford County, a homemaker and attended the Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late George and Nancy Ann Noblitt Darnell. She is survived by a brother, Virgil Darnell of Lewisburg, three sisters, Flora Harber of Lewisburg, Grace Morgan of Madison and Ethel Neill of Lewisburg. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home with Rev. Donald G. Cox officiating. Burial followed in Wheel Cemetery. Visitation was held on Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home.

William Clark Duncan
November 5, 1999
William Clark Duncan, age 85, businessman and resident of Country Club Lane, Columbia, died Friday, November 5, at Maury Regional Hospital following a short illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Ward, Rev. Mike Williams, and Rev. Carleton Thackston officiating. Burial followed in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family visited with friends Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Martin College. The Marshall County native was the son of the late William Ernest Duncan and Etta Bills Duncan. He attended elementary school at Mars Hill and was a graduate of Spring Hill High School and a graduate of Hoffman Institute in Overland Park, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the 139th Battalion. Following the war, Mr. Duncan was in the trucking business in Columbia. He was a member of the operating Engineers 369 and helped build the Cordell Hull Dam. He was also involved in the reactiviation of the Tennessee Army Engineers Depot in Chattanooga during the Vietnam War. He worked as an engineer on the TVA-Columbia Dam until its closing. He was a Shriner, Mason and Scottish-Rite. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he had served as usher, board member of the finance committee and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School and Young at Heart. He was also a member of the Maury County Historical Society, Maury County Shrine Club, Nashville Bodies of Scottish Rites, Al Menah Temple, and Maury County Hospital Volunteers. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mae Ledbetter Duncan of Columbia; one daughter, Carol of Nashville; three grandsons; one brother, Bill Duncan of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Marjorie Duncan Jones of Everman, Texas. Pallbearers were Harold Ledbetter, Powell Ledbetter, Browder Ledbetter, Marshall Ledbetter, Gary Ledbetter, Gene Barr, James Barr, Randall Scott and Reed Buckner. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, James Boyd, Columbia Police Department, Enoch George, Ashley Brown, Ron & Cathy Ratliff, Dr. Linda P. Mrs. Becky Hunter

Mrs. Becky Hunter, age 56, of 274 Carole Anne Drive, Woodbury died Sunday, November 7, at her home after an extended illness. A native of Rutherford County she was the daughter of Agnes Ferrell Tucker of Murfreesboro and the late Mason Tucker. She was an antique and interior designer and a member of the Woodbury First Baptist Church. She was also a graduate of O'More School of Design and MTSU. In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband, Richie Hunter of Woodbury formerly of Lewisburg; four sons, Bryce Blocker of Woodbury; Chad Hunter of Murfreesboro; and Scott and Blake Hunter both of Woodbury; two sisters, Fay Johns of Tampa, Florida; and Bonnie Baugh of Chevy Chase, Maryland; one grandson, and one niece and two nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Woodbury First Baptist Church in Woodbury. Dr. Tom Madden, Brother Bobby Zumbro and Brother Herb Alsup officiated the service. Burial followed in Maple View Cemetery in Smyrna. Visitation with the family was held Monday after 4:00 p.m. at the Woodbury Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Donnie Odom, Fred Schwartz, Wayne Reed, James Jennings, Bill Jennings, Jim Thomas, David Odom, and Johnny Parkhurst. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Gayle Tate, Joe Prince, Martin Davis, Carey Dills, Dr. J. Howard Young, Bill Gilliam, Mike Jordan, David Duggin, Dr. Leon Reuhlar and Monty Young. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Woodbury First Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Murfreesboro.

Mrs. Madgie Ann Hitt Reed, of Lewisburg, died Thursday, November 4, at Marshall Medical Center. She was a native of Morgan County, Alabama. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur, Alabama with the Rev. Rickey Hughes officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Cemetery. The family visited with friends from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Roselawn Funeral Home. She is survived by her husband, Stephen Reed of Lewisburg; four sons, Harvey Lee Hitt of Hartselle, Alabama; Jeffery Ken Hitt of Nashville; Jackie Lee Hitt of Priceville, Alabama; and Anthony Scott Hitt of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Sheila Diann Hammon of Decatur, Alabama; one step-son, Jeffery Stephen Reed of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two step-daughters, Vickie Marlene Reed of Red Lyon, Pennsylvania; and Lorie Seamons of Decatur, Alabama; two sisters, Virginia Holbert and Nettie Cole both of Decatur, Alabama; three brothers, Jackie Cole, Dwain Cole and James Cole all of Decatur, Alabama; 19 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. William (Bill) Nathaniel Sanders

William (Bill) Nathaniel Sanders, age 95 of Cornersville, died Thursday in NHC (Merihil) Healthcare. Mr. Sanders was a native of Giles County, son of the late Issac Thomas and Lou Kate Bradford Sanders, retired farmer and member of the Diana Church of Christ. He is survived by one son, Billy Mac Sanders of Lewisburg; two daughters, Betty Joy Sanders of Cornersville and Mary Ann Parker of Smyrna; one sister, Louetta Pyles of Nashville; one brother, Buford Sanders of Manchester and four grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Cornersville Funeral Home with interment in Diana Cemetery. Tom Holland and Jack Dunn officiated the services. The family visited with friends at the funeral home after 4:00 p.m. Friday for visitation. Pallbearers were Buddy Doggett, Ken Lee, Calvin Tucker, John Williamson, Wayne Pagle and Ronnie Holley.

Nathan C. Sands

Nathan Coffee Sands, age 85, retired farmer, school bus driver and truck driver and resident of Fry Branch Road in Lynnville, died Saturday, November 6, at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Captain Lovell and Rev. Leon Reed officiating. Burial followed in the Lynnwood Cemetery in Giles County. The family visited with friends Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Giles County native was the son of the late Jim and Lorena Wright Sands. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Lynnville. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Shirley Lovell Sands of Lynnville; a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Ann Center of Montgomery, Alabama; two sons, Winford Sands of DeRidder, Louisiana and Bryan Sands of Lynnville; and seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Ritchie Sands, Keith Sands, Jeff Sands, Hayden Darwin Center, Nathan Carlton Center, Mark Center, Todd Rose and John Osborne.

Lloyd M. Staggs, age 85, of Donelson, died Sunday in Summit Hospital in Hermitage. Mr. Staggs was the son of the late Rosa Lee and Rev. B.J. Staggs. He is survived by his wife, Articeil Hobbs Staggs of Donelson, two sisters, Louise Crowe of Columbia; and Ruth Doss of Lewisburg; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services and burial were conducted Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in Mars Hill Cemetery. Frankie McMeen officiated the service. Visitation with the family was held Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Hibbett-Hailey Funeral Home, Donelson Pike, Donelson.

Mrs. Betty Ann Twitty

Mrs. Betty Ann Twitty, age 65 of Lewisburg, died Thursday in St. Thomas Hospital. Mrs. Twitty was a native of Giles County, daughter of the late Howard and Irene Jett Pinkston, homemaker and member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Jo Allen Sharp of Hazel Green, Alabama; one son, Landon Pinkston Allen of Indianapolis, Indiana; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of London Funeral Home with interment in Mars Hill Cemetery. Vinton Morgan officiated the service. The family was at the funeral home after 3:00 p.m. Friday for visitation. Pallbearers were John Murray, Jimmy Pinkston, Jerry Hodge, Keith Hodge, Shannon Gentry and Billy Collins.
