Mrs. Jean Kiefer, 73, Kingsport, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Kiefer was an Oceanside, N.Y., native and had lived in the Kingsport area for the past 52 years. She was a daughter of the late William and Jeanette Syrett. Mrs. Kiefer was a member of the Watauga Lake Sailing Club. She was a volunteer for the Girl Scouts, PTA and Band Boosters. Mrs. Kiefer was a graduate of Tusculum College, Greeneville. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Kiefer was preceded in death by one brother, William Syrett Jr. Survivors include her husband, John Kiefer; two daughters, Judy Harris, Kingsport, and Sandra Keebler, Jonesborough; one son, Ed Kiefer, High Point, N.C.; and one sister, Shirley Feuring, Huntington, N.Y. David N. Williams - LIMESTONE
David Newton Williams, 84, John M. Reed Nursing Home, Limestone, formerly of 138 Creasy Creek Road, Jonesborough, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Williams was a lifelong Washington County resident and a son of the late Robert T. and Alma Bashor Williams. He was an active member of Jackson Park Church of the Brethren, Jonesborough, where he had served on the official church board, as Sunday school superintendent and as teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class. Mr. Williams was a 1936 graduate of Jonesborough High School. He retired in 1973 after a long career in the retail hardware business and was also a farmer. Mr. Williams later weighed cattle at the Jonesborough Livestock Market. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Joyce Wilson Williams, in 1989. Survivors include one sister, Louise W. Ferguson, Jonesborough; one niece, Donna Ferguson Boyd, Jonesborough; one nephew, Sheridan E. Ferguson, Jonesborough; two great-nephews; and one great-niece. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Mrs. Elva O.G. Birchfield - ROAN MOUNTAIN
Mrs. Elva G. Oaks Birchfield, 81, Lakebridge Health Care Center, formerly of Rt. 3, Roan Mountain, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Birchfield was a Shell Creek native and a daughter of the late Near and Ethel Greer Oaks. She retired in 1957 from Bemberg, Elizabethton. She was a member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies’ Aide. Mrs. Birchfield was a volunteer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Birchfield; one daughter, Armetta Holly; five sisters, Odie Johnson, Hazel Hayes, Alice Beeler, Lola Church and Lula Oaks; and one brother, Frederick Oaks. Survivors include three sons, Herbert Larry Dean Oaks, Morristown, Henry David Oaks, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Walden Howard Birchfield, Jonesborough; two stepchildren, Martha and Junior; three sisters, Lois Field, Elk Park, N.C., Nola Freeman, Jonesborough, and Mary Ruth Markland, Roan Mountain; two brothers, Tull Oaks, Roan Mountain, and Levi Oaks, Gary, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. ALEXANDRIA, La. — Mrs. Beatrice Buck McIntosh, 2511 Horseshoe Drive, died here Tuesday, June 4, 2002. Mrs. McIntosh was a Johnson City, Tenn., native and a daughter of the late Daniel and Locky Jane Johnson Buck. She was a Lutheran. Mrs. McIntosh was preceded in death by her husband, Verney E. McIntosh; and an infant son, Ronald McIntosh. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Merle R. Vahlkamp, Alexandria; one sister, Lillian C. Beulah Minga - BRISTOL, VA
BRISTOL, Va. — Beulah Minga, 101, NHC Healthcare, 245 North St., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Minga lived in Sullivan County, Tenn., most of her life and was a daughter of the late John H. and E. Lou Rogers Minga. She was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church, where she taught young children’s Sunday school until moving to Bristol in 1949. She was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church, where she taught the four-year-old Kindergarten Sunday School Class, now named the Beulah Minga Class, for more than 40 years. She provided child care for all services and was a member of the Fellowship Class. Ms. Minga was employed as a teacher by Holston Institute for a number of years. She was employed by the H.P. King Co. for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Sullivan County Home Demonstration Club. Ms. Minga was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Survivors include four nephews, Roy Webb and John Webb, both of Jonesborough, Tenn., Richard Webb, Fall Branch, Tenn., and John Minga, Cleveland, Ohio; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Hiram D. McEwen Sr. - BUTLER
Hiram Daniel McEwen Sr., 57, 270 Timothy Branch Road, Butler, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home. Mr. McEwen was a Johnson County native and a son of the late Walsy and Willa Nave McEwen. He was an environmental service employee of the nursing facility at the VA Medical Center. Mr. McEwen was a Vietnam War Army veteran. He was a lapidatist and silversmith. Mr. McMcEwen was a member of the Rock and Mineral Club. He was a member and treasurer of Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jean McEwen; one daughter, April Wilson, Telford; one son, Daniel McEwen, of the home; one sister, Jewell Lewis, Meritt Island, Fla.; two brothers, Loyd McEwen, Mountain City, and Mark McEwen, Butler; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Michelle Freshour Graham, 34, Chuckey, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Graham was a daughter of Glenn and Vickie Franklin Freshour, Greene County. She was employed as a developmental technician by Greene Valley Developmental Center, Greeneville. Mrs. Graham attended Kinsley Avenue Freewill Baptist Church. Dr. George Huges - FALL BRANCH
Dr. Frank George Hughes, Fall Branch, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Dr. Hughes was a son of the late George and Eva Shadden Hughes. He was a member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church. Dr. Hughes was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens, where he received his bachelor’s degree; and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he received his master’s and doctoral degrees in education. He began his teaching career at Niota, where he served as a teacher and principal. Dr. Hughes served as a math and science teacher at Etowah and East Fifth Street Middle School, Chattanooga. He served as a professor at the University of Tennessee; and Tennessee State University and Belmont University, both of Nashville. Dr. Hughes retired in 1996 from Belmont, where he taught for 15 years. He was recognized for his achievements in computer science by Belmont, where a computer lab was named in his honor. Dr. Hughes was preceded in death by one brother, Shuford Hughes. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Layman Hughes; three daughters, Karen Hughes, Christy Cantey and Kathy Hughes; one sister, Helen McKinney; and three grandchildren. Miss Susan R. Cash, 31, 356 Oak Grove Road, Gray, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at North Side Hospital after a lengthy illness. Miss Cash was a lifelong Washington County resident and a daughter of Bobby L. Cash and the late Ella Dean Cash. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Gray. Miss Cash attended Daniel Boone High School, Gray. Mrs. Phipps was a Johnson County native and had lived in Johnson City since the 1920s. She was a daughter of the late Charlie Crowe and Julie Robinson Crowe. She was a homemaker. Mr. Sayers was a Winston-Salem, N.C., native and a son of Velma Lynch Sayers and the late Bowie Crockett Sayers Jr. He was a professor in East Tennessee State University’s Computer Science Department. Mr. Sayers was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he received a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics; and Memphis State University, where he received a master’s degree in mathematics. He was a Vietnam War Army veteran, having served in the infantry. Mr. Sayers received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal V Device and Combat Infantryman Badge Air Medal. He was preceded in death by one brother, Davie Sayers. Mr. Jackson was a Johnson City native and had lived in this area for most of his life. He was a son of Cliner and Martha Walker Jackson, Johnson City. Mr. Jackson was a former brick mason and retired as a custodian from the Johnson City Power Board. He attended Johnson City Church of God. Mr. Sutter was an animal control officer for Sutter County and also had worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Martin later was employed by White’s Fresh Foods, Johnson City. He was a member of Highland Church of Christ. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by one sister, Jessie L. Martin; and one infant brother, Harold Martin. William R. Ford, 84, Liberty Church Road, Gray, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Appalachian Christian Village. Mr. Ford was a Washington County native and a son of the late William Samuel Ford and Evaline Barnes Ford. He was a member of Old Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church. Mr. Ford retired from Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, after 35 years of service on Guard Force. He also was a farmer. Mr. Ford was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Ford Fitzgerald and Lucy Ford Carr. Survivors include three daughters, Gladys Casey, Johnson City, and Melva Harold and Lena Marshall, both of Gray; one son, Samuel Ford, Johnson City; two grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Sidney “Howard” Barnett, 78, 1158 Suncrest Drive, Gray, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Barnett was a Sulphur Springs community native and had lived in this area his entire life. He was a son of the late Henry Thomas and Rebecca Harmon Barnett. He retired from Eastman after 28 years of service. Mr. Barnett was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by one brother, Asia Barnett; two sisters, Mary Cassidy and Martha Susong; and one grandson. She attended Liberty Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Erwin was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Eunice and Justin Dunbar; and one sister, Reba Burgner. Sye Thomas Gambrel, 79, Pine Oaks Assisted Living, Johnson City, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Gambrel was a native of Bailey Switch, Ky., and had lived in Connersville, Ind., and Corbin, Ky. He was a son of the late Jeff and Elsie Lawson Gambrel. He retired from Philco Ford, Connersville. Mr. Gambrel was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, having served in the 3rd Division in the Iwo Jima and Northern Solomon Island campaigns. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Corbin, and Baptist Temple, Connersville, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Gambrel was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mary Shelton Gambrel. Survivors include one son, Van Gambrel, Gray; one daughter, Cheryl Hazelrigg, Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Josh Gambrel and Angel Gambrel, both of Gray; and three nieces, Regina Borden, Brenda Greer and Freda Simpson, all of Corbin. Carlos Phillips, 54, Appalachian Christian Village, Johnson City, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was a Washington County native and a son of the late Ed Phillips Sr. and Ora Fritts Phillips. Mr. Phillips retired from the Washington County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He was a Baptist. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Phillips and Ed Phillips Jr.; and one sister, Julie Phillips. Survivors include one sister, Brenda Blankenship, Joneborough; two brothers, Fred Phillips, Joneborough, and Perry L. Phillips, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Mrs. Frances Story - JONESBOROUGH
Mrs. Frances Story, 72, 3541 Cherokee Road, Jonesborough, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Story was a Washington County native and a daughter of Lowell Ellis, Jonesborough, and the late Laura Angell Ellis. She retired as an orthopedic nurse from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, after more than 20 years of service. Mrs. Story was a member of Union Church of Christ. She was an active member of the Fig Tree Fellowship at Emmanuel School of Religion. Survivors, in addition to her father, include her husband, Ollie Story; three daughters, Louise Mullins, Limestone, and Sylvia Chiu and Freida Lewis, both of Jonesborough; one son, Fred Story, Jonesborough; two sisters, Margaret Sepello, Jonesborough, and Jeanne Bishop, Johnson City; one brother, William Ellis, Jonesborough; one half sister, Lynda Larkin, Port St. John, Fla.; her stepmother, Wilma Ellis, Jonesborough; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Doyle R. Hensley - SUTTER, CALIF.
SUTTER, Calif. — Doyle Rex Hensley, 83, Sutter, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Hensley was a Rogersville, Tenn., native, and had been a Yuba-Sutter resident since 1939. Mr. Hensley was an animal control officer for Sutter County and also had worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Hensley was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Pauline Hensley. Survivors include one daughter, Bianca Endsley, Sutter; one son, Doyle “Buck” Hensley, Sparks, Nev.; five sisters, Peggy Carlin and Jacqueline Helzer, both of Yuba City, Joyce Holding, Reno, Nev., and Waynia Ward and Cuba Carberry, both of Jonesborough, Tenn.; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. Ullrey Memorial Chapel, Sutter, was in charge.

Katherine Louise McCanlies - TELFORD
Katherine Louise McCanlies, daughter of Ted and Dolly Bode, passed away May 15, 2002 at the age of 81 years, 5 months. Born November 26, 1920 and raised in Telford, Tenn., she was the middle daughter of a farming family. She attended Washington College Academy where she met and married a young Texas Naval Trainee, E.L. "Buck" McCanlies. Together they traveled to San Diego where he completed his Naval Service after serving in the Pacific during W.W.II. They settled in Tennessee and later returned to Texas with their two children. She cared for her family and friends with the same love and compassion that carried her through until the end. Her warmth, generosity, and spirit have touched her family and those who knew her. She will be fondly remembered, deeply loved, sorely missed, and forever with us. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and both sisters. She is survived by her son, Emmett L. McCanlies III and wife Sharon, daughter, Judy McCanlies and fiancé Richard Yeats, grandson, Kevin McCanlies and fiancé Christina Dickson, long time friends Casey and Kathleen Jones of Erwin, Tenn., many other family members, and friends. Funeral Services were held Monday, May 20, 2002 at 10 am, in the Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, with interment in the Moran Cemetery, Moran Texas. Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
