LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEATH NOTICES FROM 2004

Dr. Elmer L. Parrott, 98, retired captain U.S. Army, WWII veteran and US Army Reserve officer, passed away May 23 in Oak Ridge. A physician, he returned to Tennessee in 1955 and worked for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge and TVA in Knoxville in occupational medicine. Member of Fountain City United Methodist Church and former member of Masters Lodge No. 244 F&AM and Pearl Chapter #24 of the Royal Arch Masons. President of Norris AARP and TVA Retirees Association. preceded in death by wife, Gussie Sawyer Parrott. Survivors include wife, Mildred Parrott; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Judy Parrott. Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

Rodney “Rocky” Ryder, 48, of Halls, passed away May 14 at his home. Member Texas Valley Baptist Church. Survivors include wife, Vickie Ryder; sons, Rodney Ryder Jr. and fiancee Jennifer Leven, Darrell and Melissa Rutherford; daughter, Melissa Rutherford; four grandchildren. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Eva “Jeanette” Petree Smith, 77, passed away May 23. Member of Fountain City United Methodist Church and several organizations at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church. Survivors include children and spouses: Teresa Gail Smith, David Allen Smith, Charles Everett and Kimberly Smith; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. preceded in death by husband of 48 years, Everett Smith. Jeanette worked as an accounting clerk at Y-12 for many years, and then worked at the former Tennessee Valley Bank. Travis L. Sandefur, 22, of Halls, passed away May 21. He was a student and standout football player from Halls High and Anderson County High. preceded in death by mother, Patsy Hawkins Sandefur, and stepbrother, Clint Harmon. Survivors include father and stepmother, Brian and Stacey Sandefur; grandmother, Barbara Sandefur; grandfather, Leroy Hawkins. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Charles Robert Thurman, 73, of Corryton, passed away May 17. Member of Union Baptist Church on Washington Pike. Survivors include wife, Valerie H. Thurman; children and spouses: Valerie Gayle and Larry Davis, Robert Dale and Tammy Thurman; three grandchildren. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Louis T. Walker, 74, passed away May 17 at St. Mary’s. Member of Powell Church of God and veteran of U.S. Navy. Newton E. Bull Jr., 83, of Halls, passed away April 6 at Hillcrest Healthcare North. Member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church and Woodard Lodge # 737 F&AM and Scottish Rite. Retired service representative from Frigidaire Division of General Motors. Veteran of U.S. Army in WWII. Survivors include wife, Betty Bull; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Bonnie Bull; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Keith Bissell; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Kincel Bull; sister, Margaret Kent. Betty L. Brown, of Corryton, passed away April 8 at Hillcrest Northe of Palm Beach Coat Shop. She was preceded in death by ex-husband and lifelong friend, Bob Brown. Mynatt Funeral Home.

E. Al Curtis, 72, of Knoxville, passed away April 9 at Brakebill Nursing Home. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lola Thacker Cur-tis; daughters and sons-in-law, Dedie and Randy Stansberry, Tina and Kevin Hemry; granddaughter Margaret Ellen Stansberry; grandsons, Tanner Curtis Hemry and Ty Curtis Hemry; brother and sister-in-law, John R. and Anne G. Curtis; sister and brother-in-law, Janice C. and Louis Woolfmanager for 30 years. He also was lovingly known as birthday dog for many years on Channel 10. He was the leader of the Al Curtis Orchestra and worked for many years for the Tennessee Valley Fair. Served as past master Fountain City Lodge #757 F&AM, 32 degree Scottish Rite, past potentate Kerbela Shrine Temple, York Rite Bodies, Royal Order of Scotland, past worthy patron Beaver Ridge Chapter 320 OES, past director Royal Order of Jesters; vice president for 20 years Knoxville Musician Association. Kathleen Frei, 82, of Knoxville, died April 6 at St. Mary’snry Frei; son, James Steven Frei. Survivors include daughter-in-law, Pat Frei Wylie; special friends, John and Betty Cooper. Stevens Chapel.

Weltha Sams Clevenger Haynes, 84, of Knoxville, passed away April 4 at her home. She was preceded in death by parents: Berry and Margaret Sams; husbands: Wallace Clevenger and Clint Haynes; five sisters and two brotherser and son-in-law, Brenda and Larry Arnwine; sons and daughters-in-law: Les and Sue Clevenger, Ron and Pat Clevenger, Gerald and Paulette Clevenger, and Lyn and Diana Clevenger; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Marilyn Hines, 62, of Powell, passed away April 9 at UT Medical Center. She was a native of Madison, Tenn. Member of First Baptist Church of Madison. She was an educator at the UT Medical Center. Leotha Hooper, 75, of Maynardville, passed away April 7. A member of Milan Baptist Church. preceded in death by grandson, James Dalton Hooper. Josie Bell “Pat” Eubanks Horner, 90, of Knoxville passed away April 4 at her home. Member of Marbledale Baptist Church. preceded in death by husband, Samuel E. “Red” Horner; grandchild, Sonya Hill. Harry Clifford Huskisson, 91, former Knoxville Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety, passed away April 4 at Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital. He was a lifetime member of Second United Methodist Church, a member of Rotary International and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Keaton Huskisson; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Al Walls. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Plato Rhyne Jr. of Atlanta; daughter, Susan Huskisson of Marbella, Spain; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren. Mary Alice Lawson, 66, of Corryton, died April 6 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. Rebecca “Ms. Becky” Branch Nichols, 57, of Powell, passed away April 6 at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. She was a member of First Baptist Powell and worked for 18 years at Powell Day Care Center. Roger Wayne Overton, 44, of Corryton, passed away April 7 at his home. He served in the U.S. Navy. preceded in death by brother, John Overton; wife, Holly. Mary “Bib” Wolfenbarger, 68, of Heiskell, passed away April 8 at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was retired from Bike Athletic. James Marshall Belew, 87, of Knoxville, passed away April 2. He was a member of Luttrell Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Wolfenbarger Belew, and son, Artis Lee Belew.
