Julius Rogers Alexander
Tuesday, May 28, 2002

Julius Rogers Alexander, who was born in Dyersburg on June 24, 1921, will be honored with a memorial service on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery. His funeral services were held at Mount Vernon Mortuary in Fair Oaks, CA, on April 30. Alexander served proudly in the U.S. Air Force and was a decorated veteran of WWII in campaigns in Europe and Africa. After a military career that took him around the world, he settled in Fair Oaks for almost 40 years. He was active in Masonic and Scottish Rites organizations. His greatest personal joys were gardening, fishing and hunting.

Kemp Huffine, 98, of Yorkville, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at Martin Healthcare in Martin. She was a retired school teacher for Gibson County School System and the oldest member of Bethpage Baptist Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethpage Baptist Church near Mason Hall with the Rev. Billy Criswell and the Rev. Tony Michael officiating. Burial will be in Bethpage Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at 5:30 p.m. today at Dyersburg Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The widow of Joe A. Huffine, survivors include a daughter, Mary Alice Higdon of Yorkville; two sons, Andrew Huffine of Paris, Ohio and Joe Mac Huffine of Kenton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Andrew Huffine II, David Huffine, Kenneth Higdon, John Higdon Jr., Lee Higdon and Van Higdon. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

Richard Lee Burpo, 72, of Hornbeak, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at his residence. He was a retired farmer and a Baptist. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cryer Funeral Home in Obion. Burial will be in Elbridge Cemetery in Obion. Survivors include his wife, Oma Elizabeth Burpo of Hornbeak; three daughters, Doris Stockdale and Virginia Stover, both of Hornbeak and Janice Howell of Martin; three sons, Jeff Burpo, Don Burpo and David Burpo, all of Hornbeak; two sisters, Artie Hudgins of Union City and Ruby Erwin of Hornbeak; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Lee "Happy" Burpo and Artie Mae Gammons Burpo; and two brothers, T. Burpo and John L. Burpo.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with Mike Myrick Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Church Grove Cemetery in Newbern. The family will receive visitors at 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Survivors include a daughter, Toni D. Burpo of Dyersburg; a son Donald Lee Crafton of Dyersburg; her mother, Wilma Sue James of Dyersburg; a sister, Frances "Granny" Scott of Dyersburg; two brothers, Sammie James and Danny James, both of Dyersburg; and a grandchild, Lucy Christine Low. Pallbearers will be Wilton McKenzie, Dennis Anderson, Donnie Wilson, Larry Keith Edwards, Eddie Hicks and Dan Hicks.

He was a retired certified public accountant with Dallas & Taylor, a member, deacon and elder of Evergreen Presbyterian Church, served two terms as Clerk of the Session at Evergreen Presbyterian Church, former chairman of the trustees, former president and member of the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurses Association and a U.S. Army veteran. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Memphis and a graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Yorkville Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Stewart and the Rev. Anna Small officiating.
