Tuesday, July 23, 2002

Henry Aden, 87, of Dyersburg, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at Dyersburg Manor Nursing Home. He was a farmer and a Baptist.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. today in Ripley Memorial Gardens with Brother Tim Nichols officiating. J.W. Curry & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Henry Van Aden of Memphis; and a brother, George Aden of Dyersburg.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Evra Williams; and two brothers, Sammy Aden and Grady Aden.

Helen Moseley Whiteway
Wednesday, July 24, 2002

Helen M. Whiteway, 82, formerly of Newbern, died at her daughter's home in Phoenix, Ariz., earlier this month.
She was born in Newbern. After completing her education just prior to WWII, she moved to Philadelphia and served in the Red Cross during most of the term of the war. She dedicated 30-plus years to Swarthmore College and Friends' Central School. She was honored by Friends' Central School in 1987 for her many years of dedicated service with the Merrill E. Bush Award, given in recognition to "an outstanding Friends' Central member who champions the spirit of Dr. Bush in the fields of peace, education and service."

A private family service will held on Aug. 16. Burial will be in Yorkville.

Survivors include a daughter, Hilary Whiteway Cummings; two sons, Stanley E. Whiteway Jr. of Bartlett and Eric C. Whiteway of New Canaan, Conn.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Whiteway; her parents Hubert and Bell Moseley and a sister, Francis House.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made "in memory of Helen M. Whiteway" to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., Suite 1100; New York, NY 10016

Ann S. Clicque

Ann S. Clicque, 88, of Union City, died Sunday, July 21, 2002 at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
She was a retired secretary/bookkeeper for Landscape Nursery and Morning Star Nursery, a member of Union City Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Cumberland Presbyterian Women and Sinder Sunday school class and Reelfoot Chapter of D.A.R.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at White Ranson Funeral Home in Union City with the Rev. James Westbrook and the Rev. Alfred C. Stone officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg.

The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Clicque of Memphis; a son, Jon Nash of Bellingham, Wash.; four grandchildren, Jeff Nash of Coppell, Texas, Chris Nash of Newbury, Ore., Kimberly Nash of Seattle, Wash. and Kerstin Nash of Oreas Island, Wash.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Forrest Clicque and Willie Frank Nash; her parents, Martin Luther and Mary Lou Shoffner; two sisters, Sarajohn Pittman and Matlida Holloman; and two brothers, Felix Shoffner and Martin Luther Shoffner Jr.

Pallbearers will be Greg Dunn, Jerry Paschall, Brian Pope, Jeff Nash, Chris Nash and Bryce Pope. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Cultra, John Bradley, F.C. Shoffner and Clint S. Holloman.

Andrew Wardell 'Dell' Robinson

Andrew Wardell "Dell" Robinson, 89, of Jackson, formerly of Dyersburg, died Sunday, July 21, 2002 at Gibson County General Hospital in Trenton.
Services will be at noon Friday at Salter's Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Cecil Madoxx Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Robert Chapel Cemetery in Linden.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. today at H.H. Hudson Funeral Home in Dyersburg.

Survivors include two nieces, Marye Robinson and Gwendolyn Cleveland, both of Toledo, Ohio; and three nephews, Ronnie Duke of Jackson, Robert Robinson of Toledo, Ohio and Emmitt Robertson of Newbern.

Christine Freeman Smith

Christine Freeman Smith, of Memphis, formerly of Finley, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at Methodist Hospital-Central in Memphis.
She was owner and operator of  Jackson Avenue Beauty Salon and a member of Greer's Pentecostal Church in Memphis.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Germantown Parkway Chapel of Memphis Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memory Hill Gardens in Memphis.

Survivors include her husband, William Ancel Smith; and two sons, Edgar A. Smith and William Gerald Smith, both of Lakeland; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James "Pete" and Vora Freeman; and a brother, James Lloyd "Son" Freeman.

Betty "June" Van Domburg

Betty "June" Van Domburg, 71, of Carbondale, Ill., died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Memorial Hospital.
She was a homemaker.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Center First United Methodist church with the Rev. Dan Tilley officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Newbern.

The family will receive visitors at 5-8 p.m. Saturday at  Johnson Funeral Home in Newbern.

Survivors include her husband Piet Van Domburg of Maastricht, Holland two daughters, Agnes Blanche Blance Delaney of Carbondale, Ill. and Catherine Louise Hoffman of Queen Creek, Ariz.; two sons, Gaston Marie Pechholt of Tempe, Ariz. And Mathieu Douglas Pechholt of Carbondale, Ill.; her mother, Evie Hulme of Newbern; a brother, Larry Tillman of Gleason; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gaston Marie Pechholt.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Tillman, Jesse Clay Tillman, Benson Hulme, Dan Edwards, Mike Delaney and James L. Ashcraft.

Lydie B. Tidwell, 85, of Finley, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 at Methodist Healthcare-Dyersburg Hospital.
She was a homemaker and a member of Finley Pentecostal Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of J.W. Curry & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Ellingsworth officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg.

The family will receive visitors today from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The widow of Elmer Tidwell, survivors include five daughters, Bobbie Sawyers and Joyce Patterson, both of Finley, Patsy Perry of Millington and Brenda Childress and Judy Hutcheson, both of Dyersburg; three sons, Harold Tidwell and Rickie Tidwell, both of Dyersburg and Wayne Tidwell of Memphis; a sister, Hazel Mitchell of Dyersburg; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Richie Tidwell, Robby Tidwell, Lanny Tidwell, Scotty Childress, Danny Childress, Terry Tidwell and Donnie Hutcheson.

Louis F. 'Buck' Sewell
Monday, July 29, 2002

Louis F. "Buck" Sewell, 79, of Dyersburg, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was a retired salesman for Clark Distributing Company, an Army veteran of World War II, a Purple Heart recipient, a member of Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. James Branscum officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Sewell of Dyersburg; a daughter, Patricia Sewell Owen and husband, Ken, of Dyersburg; a son, Robert Sewell and wife, Madonna, of Dyersburg; a brother, Billy Sewell of Memphis; three grandchildren, Scottie Sewell, Krissy Lee and Kenneth K. Owen II; two step-grandchildren, Shannon Pleasant and Angie Antwine; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Fredia Joyce Sewell; and a brother, Winford Sewell.

Pallbearers will be Bill Davis, James Taylor, Chris Thurmond, Hank Thurmond, Jim Crews and Steve Williams.

Joshua Alexander Hanks

Joshua Alexander Hanks, 5-year-old son of Billy Joe and Erin Hanks of Friendship, died Monday, July 29, 2002 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Calvin Smith officiating. Burial will be in Dyer County Memorial Gardens.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Stephanie Via of Friendship; three brothers, Christian Hanks and Tyler Hanks, both of Dyersburg and Matthew Clayton of Friendship; his grandparents, Johnny and Margaret Milligan and Rick and Roxanne Baker, all of Dyersburg; his great-grandparents, Fred and Dorothy Hanks, Fay Milligan, Jim and Marilyn Crowell and Billy and Shirley Baker, all of Dyersburg; his great-great-grandmother, Margaret Colvett of Newbern; and his godparents, Keith and Rebecca Walls of Newbern.

Pallbearers will be Fred Hanks Jr., Derrick Hanks, Rick Mounce and Keith Walls. The family requests that any memorials be directed to the American Asthma Association.

Flora H. Smyth, 88, of Texas City, Texas, formerly of Dyersburg, died Friday, July 26, 2002 in Texas.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cottonwood Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hurt Cemetery in Martin with the Rev. Barry Fowler officiating.

The family will receive visitors from 5-9 p.m. today at J.W. Curry & Son Funeral Home.

Survivors include two daughters, Florene Quinton and husband, James Eddie Quinton of Texas City, Texas and Donna Sykes and husband, James of Ridgely; a son, Dalton P. Smyth of Union City; a sister, Grace Braswell of Paris; four grandchildren, Kathy Ruff, Gregory Stone, Jennifer Gray and David Quinton; six great-grandchildren, John Johnston, Martha Johnston, Ryan Stone, Alex Stone, Dustin Gray and Daltyn Gray; and a great-great-grandchild, Keegun Patrick Johnston; numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dalton Smyth; and a son, Jerry Smyth.

Pallbearers will be Steve Smyth, Terry Mack Smyth, Gene David Smyth, John Johnston, Jerry Robert Smyth and Dalton Smyth. Honorary pallbearers will be James David Quinton, Howard Stoneburner and Thomas Stoneburner.

Jalen D. Crawford, infant son of Dawana  Taylor of Ridgely and Robert Crawford of Tiptonville, died Saturday, July 27, 2002 at Methodist Healthcare-Dyersburg Hospital.
Graveside services were at 11 a.m. today in Citizen Cemetery in Tiptonville. H.H. Hudson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, Jemarri Crawford of Ridgely and Justin Crawford of Pine Bluff, Ark. Jerell Wayne Fisher

Jerell Wayne Fisher, 61, of Ridgely, died Saturday, July 27, 2002 at Lexing Manor Nursing Center in Orland Park, Ill.

He was a retired truck driver for Cape Air Freight and a member of Minonk, Ill. Pentecostal Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Ridgely chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. David Gray officiating. Burial will be in New Haven Cemetery in Ridgely.

The family will receive visitors from 5:30-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include four sons, David Jerome Fisher of Tupelo, Miss., Jerell Daniel Fisher of Crestwood, Ill., Michael Dwayne Fisher of Minonk, Ill. and Darrin Ray Fisher of Flanagan, Ill.; a sister, Shelby Hall of Ridgely; two brothers, Michael Fisher of Dyersburg and Joe Fisher of Knoxville; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Mollie Fisher; a sister, Jeanette Flincham; and a brother, Lloyd "Junior" Fisher.

Pallbearers will be Billy Earl Gray, Michael Fisher and James Rickman.

The family requests that any memorials be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Paula Jo Brown, 62, formerly of Dyersburg, died July 9, 2002 at Veteran Medical Center in Phoenix, Ark.
She was an owner/operator of PJ's Barber Shop in Duarte, Calif.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. July 15 at Brown's Colonial Mortuary in Phoenix, Ariz. Burial was in National Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Blackmore of Chandler, Ariz.; a son, Kevin Blackmore and wife, Monica of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters Mae W. Gaylor and husband Charles W. Gaylor of Detroit, Mich. and Delores Brown of Dyersburg; a brother, Ollie Brown Jr. and wife Rosemary of Dyersburg; and a brother-in-law, W.T. Harris.
