Charles Edgar Cannon
Charles Edgar Cannon, 56, died April 13, in a Bedford hospital after a courageous battle with a long-term illness, surrounded by family and friends who loved him. Funeral services were held April 18, at St. Paul Methodist Church in Abilene with the Reverend Bill Libby, the Reverend Archie Echols and the Reverend Paul Bauernfeind officiating. Interment was in the Seymour Masonic Cemetery.
Charles was born January 9, 1945, in Wichita Falls. He grew up in Abilene, graduated from Cooper High School and Texas Tech University. While at Cooper, he played varsity football and baseball. He lived briefly in Ruidoso, NM, and then returned to Abilene where he was co-owner of Lawrence-Cannon Drilling, Inc. He subsequently sold farms and ranches for Nelson-Scoggins Real Estate and was a real estate broker for Cannon Real Estate in San Angelo. He will be remembered with love by his friends and family for the lessons he taught us in compassion, caring, faith, and hope.

Cannon II of Abilene; sister and brother-in-law, Gina and Jerry Kinnaird of Bedford; nephew and niece-in-law Trey and Kim Kinnaird; nephew, Caleb Kinnaird; aunt, Elizabeth Johnson Davis of Wichita Falls; cousin, Elisa Davis Faye of Dallas; uncle and aunt, Edgar and Elaine Johnson of Abilene; cousins Ed, Larry, Cedric Johnson; and a multitude of caring friends who nurtured him till the end.

Linn Porter Harkrider
Linn Porter Harkrider, 55, died Sunday, May 13, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Linn was an educational consultant for Region 2 education service center. She had also lived and taught in the Seymour area.
Survivors include her father and mother, Charlie and Mary K. Porter, and two brothers Tom and Carl all of Seymour.
For those desiring, in liew of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
In the words of a friend:
Linn put such an energy into living that just seemed to make life want to work for her - to the point that no day was ever ordinary for her or for anyone around her. I can never listen to Neil Young singing “Long May You Run” without thinking of Linn “with her chrome heart shinning in the sun”. She seemed to make things happen just by her being there. For instance Santa Elena Canyon on the Rio Grande is not a place where one would expect to hear bag pipe music echoing, but one fall day some wondering Scottish piper found himself a pefect place to play and the canyon found Linn there to hear. And when midnight found Linn high in the rigging of the tall ship Elissa taking in sail under gale force winds, her reaction was “at the very worst, I would be the first Porter to die at sea!”. She waded the watery passageways and crawled through the bat guano of River Styx Cave and years later slipped into the burial caves in Hawaii’s lava tubes to reflect on the skeletons of the old ones in their Koa weed burial canoes. Gathering cattle with Paniola crew on the slopes of Mauna Kea is something few ever experience, but Linn did. And she would take herself miles from towns and light pollution and lie there on a cold night under the stars waiting for the meteor showers to begin. One exceptional Easter Sunday found Linn on the Big Island at almost 14,000 ft. having a snowball fight with friends, followed by a hike to a snowmelt lake and a cheese and cracker super while waiting for darkness and the appearance of the comet Hale-Bobb, of course, it did appear.
Everytime I see a sailboat or a shooting star I will think of her, and every slim graceful form going down a seawall on rollerblades will for a moment be her. “with her chrome heart shinning in the sun”. Comets like Hale-Bobb and people like Linn are in a way, a lot alike. They are very special, very rare, and they don’t come along very often.
Written for the friends & family by Joel Nelson.

Gladys Howe
Gladys Ethel Barby, the second daughter born to Otto N. Barby and May Beebe Barby, was born on July 24, 1906, at the ranch home southwest of Knowles.
Gladys died on April 23, 2001, after a lengthy stay in the Beaver County Hospital in respite care, at the age of 94 years and nine months.
Gladys attended grade school at the Sunnyside School, District 26, starting at five years of age. She attended high school at Panhandle Agricultural Institute at Goodwell, graduating in May 1924. She attended high school there because at that time the Beaver High School was not an accredited school. All three of her brothers and two sisters also graduated from that school. She was active in music events while attending school.
In the fall of 1924 she enrolled at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. attended for a year and a half, having to leave due to emergency appendectomy surgery Her major was music and the highlight of her stay in Lindsborg was singing with the Messiah Choir.
While in school her former boyfriend, Beryl, called her from Texas. They had met while attending school at Goodwell. Gladys was sitting in the window of a dormitory practicing her flute and he passed by on his way to eat lunch A lasting friendship developed.
Gladys and Beryl Howe were married at the ranch home near Knowles on November 25, 1926. To this union were born Roy Loo, Lena May and Barby Maurice.
Except for two and a half years right after they were married when they lived in Seymour, TX, she lived her life on the ranch east of Beaver. They moved back to the ranch in 1929 when Beryl started working for the ranch. Gladys taught school at home for two years for the youngest children living on the ranch.
In November 1997 she bought a home in Beaver, where she lived until it was necessary for her to go into respite care.
Gladys was a very hard working person. After returning to the ranch she cooked for the hired men that bunked at their place. She raised a large garden and many jars of food were canned every year to feed the family and men. She also raised chickens for eating and for the eggs they would produce.
Gladys, along with Beryl, were 4-H leaders for several years. They were State Honorary Lifetime members. She was a 50 year member of the Riverside Extension Club. Other organizations she actively participated in were the New Hope Club, Order of Eastern Star, Beaver Historical Society, Beaver County Nursing Home Auxiliary, and the Mary Martha Circle at the Christian Church.
Gladys received Christ into her life while she was in school at Goodwell, and began her membership in the First Christian Church here in Beaver in 1953. The greatest joys in life were her family and her Church, of which she was a very devoted and working member. She taught Sunday School, assisted and organized many clothing drives, women’s auxiliary and in many other ways where she felt she was needed. Her Church family was very special to her.
Gladys was one to always be busy. She has made quilts for each of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and for many others. Earlier she made countless needlepoint pictures and pillows and later she completed many counted cross-stitch projects. Her crafts have won many top ribbons at the fair. When they had the auctions during family reunions her donated items were desired and treasured by many. She volunteered her talents with many clubs and church activities including cooking, baking, quilting, and her time.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Beryl, son of Loo Howe; their son Barby; a son-in-law, Dearl Evans, and daughter-in-law, Louise Howe; her parents and stepmother; her three brothers and three sisters; and a half brother and half sister.

From Gladys Memoirs she stated, “I am grateful to the Lord for the 90 (some) years that He has given me and the many blessings in my life. I have a loving and concerned family and an extended family who affectionately call me “Aunt Gladys.” I was blessed with a wonderful husband and three precious children. I have six grandchildren who love me dearly, 11 great-grandchildren (...and one great-great-grandson) who bring me great JOY. My nieces’ and nephews’ children bring me great joy also.” The most important legacy I can leave is this: “To live for what is right, to maintain a strong faith in God, and to love one another. I would close with this scripture: “Beloved, if God so loved us we ought also to love one another. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfect in us. 1 John 4:11-12.”
Funeral services were Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Beaver First Christian Church with Paul Sisson and Bob Blazek officiating. Interment was in Pioneer Cemetery.
