James “Jim” H. Henson
This section lost another one of it “pioneers” citizens last week, when J.H. Henson of Vera passed away at the Baylor County Hospital, at the age of 87 years. He had been in failing health for the past few years and after getting a fall not long ago and fracturing his hip, the doctors told the family that the end was a matter of only a short time. He died on October 4, 1943.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Vera Baptist Church, with Pastor A.A. Farley in charge. He was also assisted by Rev. J.R. Balch of Seymour. Interment was in the Henson Cemetery, north of Red Springs with the following pall bearers: D.A. Holman, S.H. Shipman, A.K. McGaughery, J.J. Collier, Rube F. Richards, C.M. Randal. Flower girls were granddaughter of the deceased, the Richard twins, Mrs. Doss and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Henson was born April 3, 1856, at London, Tennessee. He came to Texas in 1880, in the company of his brother, the late John R. Henson of this place, and they settled for a while in Ellis county, before coming on here. They came to Texas from Illinois. At first Mr. Henson worked on a ranch in the Round Timber Community and it was there, on February 22, 1885, that he was married to Miss Florence Dudley.
Later on Mr. and Mrs. Henson resided two or three years in Oregon and then went to California, moving back to this country in 1907. At that time, they bought a farm northeast of Vera, where they have lived ever since. In 1928, they built a nice home there.
Deceased is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Sallie Austin of Decatur, Mrs. Bessie Brooks of Seymour, John Henson and Roy Henson of Vera, Jimmie Henson of Dallas, and Mrs. Jewel Cheek of Stamford. All were here for the funeral, together with members of their families.
Mr. Henson was converted in a meeting last spring at the Baptist Church in Vera, and was baptized in the baptistry of the church at Seymour. He has always lived a splendid moral life, and had carried out most of the principles of Christianity in his daily life. He was an example for morality and good citizenship for those about him, and his influence will continue for good among his family and friends.
The familiar figure of “Uncle Jimmie” will be sadly missed by his family and by his other associates. He was of a day and generation that has almost become a thing of the past, and his kind will not be seen here whenever the old pioneers are all gone. The family has the sympathy of the community of their loss, and at the same time there can be comfort in the long life he lived and the good influence he had in the world. In the eternal life that is to follow Mr. Henson will reap the eternal rewards for a life that was well lived.
