Albert H. Sager

Albert H. Sager, 87, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2003.
He was born October 28, 1915 in Arneckeville to the late Otto Henry and Anna Nagel Sager. He married Norma Thieme Sager who passed away September 11, 1994 and then married the Rev. Carolyn Self Sager of Cuero in 1999. He served a short stint in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
Albert was a Master Electrician (founder of Sager Electric Co.) and a farmer and past dairyman. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family dearly and gave generously of his time, talents and treasures to his family, his church and his community. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where he was a charter member and past treasurer of the Lutheran Men in Mission. He served as treasurer of the ELCA Victoria Deanery, on the Development Board of Texas Lutheran University, the Mid-Coast Board #8449 of Lutheran Brotherhood and the DeWitt County Appraisal Review Board from 1995 to 2000. He was a member of the American Legion Dinter Post 3, the Arneckeville Community Club, the Young Farmers of America, and the DeWitt County Taxpayers League. He also belonged to the Cuero Chapter of AARP where he served as past president and treasurer, the Golden Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council where he served for over 10 years, the DeWitt County Senior Citizens Association where he was a past chairman and as a Voluntary Advocate for Nursing Home Residents. He was a staunch supporter of the Cuero Livestock Show and was honored with a Honorary Chapter FFA degree in 1996. Also in 1996, he was honored by the Cuero Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his daughter, Barbara Flessner of Cuero; his son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Pat Sager of Cuero; his brother and sister-in-law, Edmund G. and Lorene Sager of Cuero and his sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Charles McWhorter of Cuero and The Woodlands. He is also survived by grandchildren, Melanie and Chris Molnoskey, Rodney Flessner, Randall and Melissa Kaiser Flessner, and Vicki Comeaux. Also his great-grandchildren, Aaron Molnoskey, Kelly Molnoskey, Chad Flessner and Cody Flessner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; a granddaughter, Debbie Sager; and a son-in-law, Harlan Flessner.
Visitation was held Thursday, September 11 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Friday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Rev. Stephen Byrne officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home (361) 275-2343.
Pallbearers: Chris Molnoskey, Philip House, Garland Pakebusch, Alton Goebel, Jimmy Bulgerin, and Erwin Schulle.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Cuero, the Debbie Sager Lucas Scholarship Fund at Texas Lutheran University, or Hospice of South Texas.

Ardean K. Heil

Ardean K. Heil, 55, was called to reside in the Lord's House on September 8, 2003.
Born in Cuero on October 18, 1947 to Alton (Shorty) and Stella Buesing, she had resided in Corpus Christi since 1994.
Ardean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister; never meeting a person who wasn't a friend. Always willing to share time or talents with others, she enjoyed her cats, arts and crafts, beachcombing and shelling, was active in women's groups, New Neighbors League and Padre Island Enrichment, and served on the Board of Directors of the Art Center for the Island, Port Aransas.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Val Heil, Corpus Christi; son and daughter-in law, Russ and Shauna Heil of Corpus Christi; daughter and son-in law, Stacie and Malcolm Rude of Temple; grandchildren, Emily and James Rude of Temple; her father, Alton (Shorty) Buesing of Yorktown; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Amy Buesing of La Mesa, New Mexico, and Hal and Jenci Buesing of Knippa.
A memorial service was held Saturday, September 13 at Island Presbyterian Church, 14030 Fortuna Bay Drive, Corpus Christi. Flour Bluff-Padre Isles Funeral Home, Corpus Christi, 361-937-1336.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Center for Cancer Prevention and Care; Scott & White Hospital; 2401 South 31st Street; Temple, TX 76508.

Rev. Abram Carmona

Services for Rev. Abram Carmona, 48, were held Friday, September 12 at the Templo Getsemani in Brownfield. Visitation was also Friday at the church.
Services were held in Cuero on Sunday, September 14 at El Buen Pastor Christian Church. Visitation was also Sunday at the church.
He passed away Thursday, September 11, 2003 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
Mr. Carmona was born to Miguel and San Juanita Carmona on January 12, 1955 in Cuero. He moved to the Brownfield area in 1991 from Victoria where he had lived since a child. He married Josie Lopez on August 21, 1976 in Cuero.
He had served as pastor of the Templo Getsemani since 1991 and was currently serving as Presbyter of the West Texas District of the U.P.L.C.I.I.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert, and one sister, Rachel.
Mr. Carmona is survived by his wife, Josie; daughter, Jessica Carmona; brothers, Rev. John and Jesse, both of Victoria, and Mike and Manuel, both of Cuero; sisters, Martha Sanchez and Marine Munoz, both of Cuero; and mother-in-law, Ofilia Lopez of San Angelo.
Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero under the direction of Mark A. Jones Funeral Directors of Brownfield, 806-637-8993.

Maxine A. Williams

Maxine A. Williams, 83, of Cuero, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003.
She was born December 21, 1919, in DeWitt County, to the late Thomas and Donna May Enoch Lucas. She was a custodian for Cuero Independent School District.
Survivors: daughters, Barbara Ann Williams and Kathy Green, both of Cuero; sons, Maurice Williams of Waco, Thomas R. Williams of Cuero, and Earl Williams of California; sister, Erma Gray of San Antonio; brother, Joseph Lucas of Big Lake; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Friday, September 12 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Saturday at L. E. Meador Encampment Grounds, the Rev. Chester Polk officiated. Burial was at Pleasantville Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Bettie Ables Kennedy

Bettie Ables Kennedy, 60, of Rockdale, and formerly of Alvin, died Saturday, September 13, 2003.
She was born August 29, 1943 on Benton, Mississippi, to the late Wade and Thelma Ables. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a Catholic.
Survivors: husband, Thomas Rex Kennedy of Rockdale; sons, Richard Alan Kennedy of Rockdale and William Wade of Alvin; daughter, Michelle Walls of Marshall; and five grandchildren.
Preceded in death by parents, four sister, and one brother.
Graveside services were Monday, September 15 at Hillside Cemetery, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Josephine Teresa Atwell

Josephine Teresa Atwell, 89, of Yorktown, died Thursday, September 11, 2003.
She was born on December 15, 1913 in Lampasas to the late Thomas and Mary Louise Dankworth McElroy. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Jerline Frenzel of Edna and Virgie Mae McCuiston of Victoria; 7 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Atwell; parents; sisters, Annie Leissner and Lola Tucker; and brothers, Wick McElroy, Jim McElroy, George McElroy; Louis McElroy; and Rufus McElroy.
A rosary was recited Sunday, September 14 at Freund Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. The funeral Mass was held Monday at Memory Gardens of Corpus Christi Mausoleum Chapel, the Rev. Dennis Zerr officiated. Interment was at Memory Gardens of Corpus Christi. John Robert Bitterly

John Robert Bitterly, 75, of Cuero, passed away Thursday, September 11.
He was born March 7, 1928 in DeWitt County to the late Robert J. and Leona Arnold Bitterly. He married Janet Ohrt on July 10, 1949 in Meyersville. He served in the U.S. Navy.
John Robert was a farmer and rancher and also worked for the Cuero Livestock Commission. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Meyersville.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Bitterly; his daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Cecil Rickman and Patty and Rodney Vassett; his sons and daughter in law, John M. Bitterly and Robert and Tammy Bitterly; his brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Kathleen Bitterly; his sisters and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Arthur Bluntzer and Sandra Bitterly; grandchildren, Teresa and Wylee Clifton, Clayton Rickman, Robby Bitterly, Reed Bitterly, Ryan Bitterly, and Amy and Cassie Lane; and great-grandchild, Courtney Clifton.
A rosary was recited Saturday, September 13 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in mEyersville. Funeral mass followed, the Rev. Michael Petering officiated. Burial was in the Meyersville Catholic Cemetery, under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers were Robert Bitterly, Paul Bluntzer, Dean Ohrt, Michael Rath, Stephen Rath, Clayton Rickman, Kyle Salziger, and Carl West.
Memorials may be made to the Meyersville Catholic Cemetery or a charity of donor’s choice.

Norman Louis McPherson

Longtime educator and businessman Norman Louis McPherson died February 7, 2004 in San Antonio at the age of 78.
He was born in Claremore, OK to Rev. Guy Emerson and Edith Foster McPherson. Mr. McPherson met his wife, Jean Ziegler McPherson when they were both students at Phillips University, Enid, OK. They married in Enid on June 16, 1946.
Mr. McPherson's career in business began in 1944 with J. C. Penny, culminating in serving as manager of the J. C. Penny store in Cuero from 1956 until his retirement in 1964. He then turned to a career in education, serving as a Distributive Education teacher at Yoakum High School, Yoakum, from 1964-1970, and as a Distributive Education teacher at Roosevelt High School, San Antonio, from 1970 until his retirement in June 1990. Mr. McPherson then worked summers as a cashier for the YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park, Co from 1990-99. Mr. McPherson was a member of North San Antonio Retired Teachers Association and the choir of St. Matthew's Methodist Church.
While in Cuero, he served as president of the Rotary Club and choir director of the First Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra in 1967.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; sons, Bill McPherson of Honolulu, HI, Dr. Robert McPherson and wife, Shelby of Tifton, GA; and Daniel McPherson of San Antonio; grandchildren, Michael McPherson and Matthew McPherson of Atlanta, GA., Patrick McPherson of Athens, GA; and Emily Hall and Joseph Hall of Tifton, GA.
Other survivors include his sister, Patricia McPherson Williams and husband, Ted of Indio, CA; brother, James McPherson and wife, Rudina of Muskogee, OK; sister, Katherine McPherson Mitchell and husband, Maurice of Turpin, OK; sister-in-law, Joan Ziegler Ferguson of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 10, in St. Matthew's Methodist Church. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons, Matthew McPherson, Michael McPherson and Patrick McPherson and his nephews, Greg Ferguson, Chuck Dougherty and Derek Ferguson.

Jesus Vasquez Sr.

Jesus Vasquez Sr., 63, of Yorktown, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004.
He was born June 25, 1940, in Yorktown, to Jose Vasquez of Yorktown and to the late Maria Moreno Vasquez. He was a carpenter and a member of San Luis Catholic Church.
Survivors: daughter, Anna Gonzales of Charlotte, N.C.; sons, Mike Vasquez of Yorktown, Joe Vasquez and Jesse Vasquez, both of Charlotte, N.C., Patrick Vasquez of Pflugerville and Paul Vasquez of Austin; sisters, Delores Vasquez, Susan Villarreal, Ortencia Serrano and Carmen Garcia, all of Yorktown; brother, Frank Vasquez of Yorktown; and 10 grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: sister, Alejandra Vasquez; and brother, Ricardo Vasquez.
A rosary was recited Tuesday at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at San Luis Catholic Church.
Burial will be at San Luis Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Olivia S. Liendo

Olivia "Neva" S. Liendo, 72, of Cuero, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004.
She was born May 18, 1931, in Westhoff, to the late Marcus V. and Eusebia Serna Sertuche. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and HIJA De Maria. She was a homemaker.
Survivors: daughters, Rosie Mary Perez, Palmira Olivia Anzaldua, Irma Mejia, Corolina Liendo, Maria Theresa Liendo Garcia, Elva Reyes and Sylvia Liendo, all of Cuero; sons, Adolph Liendo Jr., Reuben Liendo Sr., John Rudy Liendo Sr. and Guadalupe Perez Jr., all of Cuero, and Felix Liendo of Yoakum; 26 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Adolph Liendo Sr.; and sisters, Maria Hernandez and Isabel Sertuche.
A rosary was recited Monday at Freund Funeral Home chapel.
Funeral Mass was Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiating.
Burial was at San Isidro Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt County. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Olga F. Peterek

A rosary for Olga Filip Peterek, 90, of Cuero, who died Friday, were recited Monday at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Cuero.
She was born November 23, 1913 in Moulton. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ignac E. Peterek; father and mother, William and Mary Filip; a sister, Ella Jahn; brothers, Emil Filip, William Filip, and August Filip.
Surviving are daughters, Lorene and Billie Martin of Stockdale, Evelyn and Edmond Moeller of Uvalde, Doris and Douglas Miles of Rocksprings, Laurie Jean and Dennis Janak of Corpus Christi; son, Al and Doris Peterek of Kingsville.
Also surviving are sister, Gladys Sonsel of Gonzales, and brother Oscar and Mary Filip of Shiner. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at the church, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiating.
Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, 361-594-3352.

Esther K. Champion

Esther K. Champion, 89, of Cuero, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004.
She was born July 3, 1914, in Moulton, to the late Otto "Fred" and Carrie Harcin Krause. She was a retail merchant and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors: sister, Gladys Skinner of Apopka, Fla., two nieces, Fritzie Cox of New Braunfels and Tina Jobes of Holland; two nephews, Will Skinner and Richard Skinner of Apopka, Fla.
Preceded in death by: husband, Albert L. Champion.
Graveside services were at Hillside Cemetery, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiating.
