Richard J. Marek

Richard J. Marek, 81, of Yorktown, died Monday, September 16, 2002.
He was born Sept. 7, 1921, in Granger, to the late Charles and Ludmila Muzny Marek. He was a Parts manager for John Deere and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He served during World War II and in Korea and was a member of Knights of Columbus.
Survivors: wife, Florence Brysch Marek; daughter, Mary Baker of Fort Worth; sons, Rick Marek of Greenville; sisters, Martha Malek of Robstown, Ann Lalla of Taylor and Bernadette Tiana of Massachusetts; brothers, Adolph Marek of Corpus Christi; Bill Marek of Robstown and Raymond Marek of Texarkana; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Agnes Marek, Lillian Ermis and Anastaisa Brunner; and brother, Charlie Marek.
Visitation was Wednesday, September 18 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel. A rosary was recited Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Services were Thursday at the church, Rev. Peter Kaplinski officiated. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Robert Anzualda Jr.

Robert "Bob-O" Anzualda Jr., 21, of Cuero, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002.
He was born July 17, 1981, in Cuero, to Robert Anzualda Sr. of Yoakum and Terrie Mutschler of Rockport. He was a carpenter and a Pentecostal.
Survivors: son, Antwuan Moreno of Victoria; parents; step-mother, Glynis Anzualda of Yoakum; step-father, Mark Mutschler of Rockport; sister, Brandy Anzualda of Cuero; brother, Jessie Anzualda of Three Rivers; step-brothers, Todd Mutschler and Kerry Mutschler, both of Winnie, Aaron Talamantez and Caleb Fischer, both of Yoakum; and grandparents, Mary Conas Anzualda, Manuel Jr. and Dee Cervantes Gonzales, all of Cuero.
Preceded in death by: grandfather, Albert Anzualda Sr.
A prayer service was held Thursday, September 19 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Friday at the funeral home chapel, Rev. Tony Gonzales officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Alice G. Beckham

Alice G. Beckham, 69, of Cuero, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002.
She was born April 7, 1933, in Towanda, Kansas, to the late David Nathan and Ethel Geneva Hutchison McBeth. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Westhoff.
Survivors: husband, John H. Beckham; daughters, Carol Beckham of Cuero; son, Johnny Lee Beckham of Tennessee Colony; sister, Norma Marie Massey of Seguin; and brother, Harry McBeth of Kansas.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Bessie Irene Ingalls, Nellie Sanders, Eva Sanders, Bertha Honeycutt and Gladys Newman; and brothers, Donald McBeth, Wilber McBeth, and Morris McBeth.
Visitation was Friday, September 20 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Saturday at the funeral home chapel, Rev. Glenn Robertson officiated. Burial was at Clinton Cemetery in DeWitt County. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Ruby Mae Whittington

Ruby Mae Whittington, 87, of Cuero, died Thursday, September 19, 2002.
She was born March 28, 1915, in Hochheim, to the late Frank Henderson and Cornelia Moseley Henderson Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Cuero.
Survivors: daughters, Summie Thomas and Dorothy Cunningham, both of Victoria, Pennie Ellison of San Antonio, Katie Washington of Houston, Josephine Thompson of Cuero and Linda D'Aguilar of Altadena, California.; sons, Alfred Whittington Jr. and Henry Whittington, both of Houston, Quincey Whittington and Anthony Whittington, both of Cuero, Larry Whittington of Dallas and Arthur Whittington of Los Angeles; sisters, Ruth Johnson and Vera Lee Johnson, both of Victoria; 52 grandchildren; and 61 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Alfred Whittington Sr.; and parents.
Visitation was held from 11-3 p.m. Sunday, September 22 at Tracy's M.J. Santellana Funeral Home Chapel and from 5-9 p.m. at L.E. Meador Encampment Ground, 210 Nash St., Cuero. Carlton Stubbs

Carlton Stubbs, 81, of Cuero, died Friday, September 20, 2002.
He was born February 18, 1921, in DeWitt County, to the late Culberson and Willie Mae Timm Stubbs. He worked for 30 years for Texas Eastern and a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Cuero Fire Department, Travelers Protective Association and First Presbyterian Church, serving as trustee and deacon.
Survivors: wife, Dorothy Jean Casal Stubbs of Cuero; sons, Finnley Timm Stubbs of Cordova and Randy Carl Stubbs of Sugar Land; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by: parents.
Services were Sunday, September 22 at Freund Funeral Home chapel, Revs. Will Paul Menn and Andrew Gullick officiated. Graveside services were Monday at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Dr. W. Lamar Fly

Dr. W. Lamar Fly, 89, of Cuero, formerly of Victoria, died December 3, 2002 in Austin after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dr. Fly was born on September 1, 1913 in Gonzales to Frank Merriman Fly and Stella Miller Fly. He attended public schools in Gonzales and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from North Texas State Teachers College (now the University of North Texas) in 1933. In 1958, he received a Master of Education degree from the University of Texas, and in 1964 earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree, also from the University of Texas.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Fly helped found two community colleges. He served as the first president of Hill Junior College in Hillsboro from 1962 to 1967 and as the first president of Kishwaukee College in Malta, Illinois from 1967 to 1979. Before that he was a public school teacher in Gonzales, Seguin, and Cuero, and an administrator with The Victoria College in Victoria from 1958 to 1960.
He was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church, U. S. A. and past president of Rotary Clubs in Hillsboro; Rochelle, Illinois; and Cuero. He served as president of the Cuero Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the DeWitt County Historical Commission. He was a member of the University of Houston-Victoria President's Advisory Council.
Dr. Fly's community service was recognized and reflected by several awards he received. Twice he received the George Washington Honor Medal for public address. In 1964, he was named Hill County's Man of the Year. The DeKalb, Illinois Daily Chronicle named him its Outstanding Newsmaker in 1971. He received an award for distinguished community service from the Hillsboro Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1963 a Humanitarian Award for Service to Higher Education in 1978 from the Northern Illinois University Foundation.
He was a man of many talents and interests. During the 1930's and 1940's he was a banker and bank examiner. During the 1950's he assisted in cattle ranch operations in DeWitt and Gonzales Counties. He was a private airplane pilot, a writer, a thoughtful public speaker, and an accomplished bridge player. He collected antique books and entertained children of all ages with magic tricks and stories. He exuded a spirit of playfulness, innocence, and humor, so that children called him "Boy."
Dr. Fly is survived by his wife of 64 years, Melba Morgan Fly of Cuero; a son, William Lamar Fly of San Marcos; a daughter, D'Ette Fly Cowan (and her husband, Kyle Cowan), of Hillsboro; five grandchildren, Dr. Robert Kyle Cowan, Jr. (and his wife, Julie Cowan), Claiborne Lamar Cowan, Susan Inez Buie (and her husband, Jed Buie) of Austin, Benjamin Miller Cowan of Arlington, and Kelly Elizabeth Fly of San Marcos; three great-grand children; brother, William Madden Fly of Houston; and two sisters, Callie Fly Hamon of Houston and Frances Fly Otts of Silver Springs, Maryland.
Pallbearers are Robert Kyle Cowan, Jr., Claiborne Lamar Cowan, Benjamin Miller Cowan, Phil Schaefer, Fred M. Hansen, Richard Steele, Michael Steele, William Wesley, Frank B. Sheppard, E. T. Summers Jr., and Wayne Hartman.
Family and friends will celebrated Dr. Fly's life at a service at the First Presbyterian Church in Cuero on Saturday, December 7. Interment followed at Gonzales Masonic Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to Cuero's First Presbyterian Church, Hospice Austin, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Otha Hoefling

Otha Hoefling, 87, of Cuero, formerly of Yorktown, died Sunday, December 1, 2002.
She was born January 9, 1915, in Smiley, to the late Oscar and Martha Addison Bingham. She was a homemaker and manager of the Luling & Seguin Auction Barn Restaurant. She was a Sunday School teacher and member of First Baptist Church of Yorktown.
Survivors: daughters, Carlyn Semper and Joann Wendel, both of Cuero, and Linda Tampke of Utopia; sons, Carlton Hoefling of Port Lavaca, Phillip Hoefling of Meyersville and Roy Hoefling of Cuero; sisters, Marjorie Shock of Victoria and Aleene Gohlke and Letha Novak, both of Runge; brothers, Bill Bingham of Poteet and Robert Bingham of Kenedy; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Carl Hoefling; son, Norman Hoefling; parents; sisters, Lila Merritt, Ethel Atkins, Bertha Gisler, Jessie Novak, and Thelma Rodgers; and brothers, James Bingham, Alvin Bingham and Leonard Bingham.
Visitation was Wednesday, December 4 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home chapel. Services were Thursday at the funeral home chapel, Rev. Billy Koinm officiated. Burial was at Runge Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Lydia Champion

Lydia Champion, 86, of Yorktown, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002.
She was born October 7, 1916, in Yorktown, to the late Victor and Lydia Amador Arizpe. She was owner of Champion Beauty Salon. She was a member of the Disabled American Veteran Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters and Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors: daughters, Yolanda Moreno of Houston and Yvonne Champion-Baylor of Santa Barbara, Calif.; brother, Ray Arizpe of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Jerry Champion; parents; and brother, Richard Arizpe.

Elfrieda Ida Metting

Elfrieda Ida Metting, 89, of Yorktown, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002.
She was born September 4, 1913, in Heinzeville Community, to the late Gus and Mary Sinast Henze. She was a member of Hermann Sons Lodge No. 36, W.E.L.C.A. and St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors: daughters, Joan Wendel of Meyersville and Sherry Metting of Nixon; son, Dalton Metting of Yorktown; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Werner E. Metting; parents; sister, Lillia Karnei; and brothers, Alfred Henze and Gerhardt Henze.

Henry Vela, 61, of Yorktown, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002.

Norman L. Henneke Sr.

Norman Lloyd Henneke Sr., 85, of Cuero, died Thursday, December 5, 2002.
He was born March 9, 1917, in Cuero, to the late Herman N. and Calliehill McGhee Henneke. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II (April 1, 1941 - September 3, 1945) and worked as a lineman and assistant to the engineer at DeWitt County Electric Coop. He was a life-member of the VFW Post 3972 and American Legion Dinter Post 3. He was past commander of the VFW and former scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 245 (which was sponsored by St. Mark’s Lutheran Church). He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Survivors: sons, Norman L. Henneke Jr. of Austin and Mark S. Henneke of Cuero; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: wife, Allie Gannon Henneke; parents; and sisters, Leola Eaves and Beverly Henneke.
Visitation was Saturday, December 7 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Sunday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Rev. Steve Byrne and intern Gene Weymar officiated. Burial was at Memory Gardens in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Josephine H. Quintanilla, 82, of Cuero, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002.
She was born December 6, 1919, in Eagle Lake, to the late Jose Huerta. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Survivors: son, Ray A. Quintanilla of Victoria.
Preceded in death by: husband, Refugio Quintanilla; and father.
